I've been using night clock and its built-in alarms for so long that I forgot that this isn't a standard android feature. It really should be.
While I'm suggesting alarm features for google to adopt, may I also recommend night clock's increasing-volume option. The alarm starts out very quiet and slowly gets louder over about 30 seconds. This is a much less jarring way to be awakened than instantaneously going from zero to "WAKE THE FUCK UP!!!".
It's constantly plugged in. It's literally a desk phone with a backup battery in case of power outage.
It has one single app installed on it (Night Clock). It doesn't have a SIM and it can't connect to WiFi. It's literally just a clock.
My regular phone does not go in the bedroom.
I've been using a bunch of my old cellphones as security cameras (:
My Nexus One, though, is too old for that. It can't connect to anything any more -- even my WiFi.
It now works as an desk/alarm clock. I built it a stand out of the Lego set Project Fi sent out, it's plugged into a charger and it runs Night Clock.
Also, the PI Zero W is kind of amazing. You can buy the thing for $5. $5!!!
I booted up the Droid X2, first dual core phone, wow Droid X2 booted up it works great as a alarm clock Night Clock (2.52) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.neddashfox.nightclock
A really minimalistic alarm clock app. Completely free, no ads, really simple, giant text that you can change the color of, and the screen can get really dim
Check out Night Clock or Dock Station Digital Clock in the Play Store. Should be able to customize to your liking. You can set the phone (Settings>Display>Screen saver) to load these apps while charging/docked instead of the built in android clock.

I've been running the Night Clock app on my Pixel XL since I got it 11 months ago, every single night, and no burn-in yet. I use auto brightness, so it's quite dim at night, though.
Yeah it's nice for movies. I also found it makes turning your phone into a nightstand-like clock incredibly easy. Useful when traveling or visiting family and you don't have one.
EDIT: I've used this app for that as long as I can remember, and it works pretty good.
I use my old HTC as a bedside clock running Cyanogen with NightClock ==> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.neddashfox.nightclock&hl=en
Its permanently connected to USB charger.
App: Night Clock
I use Night Clock on an old Galaxy S4. I haven't had any burn in. It varies the size/location of the numbers periodically.
I have done this with my older android castoff phones using an app called nightclock ==> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.neddashfox.nightclock&hl=en
For an alarm clock I use an old android phone with the app night clock from the android store ==> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.neddashfox.nightclock&hl=en
