I'm going to recommend Pocket Plays client for Twitch.tv. This is maybe the smoothest app on my phone and the dev is quick to respond and implement suggestions/fixes. Check it out!
Yep they added that when they revamped (aka ruined) the twitch app, and it's complete bullshit. Since then I've been using Pocket Plays to watch Twitch on my mobile devices.
Edit: As an aside, It's no secret that Twitch's corporate structure and management is an absolute mess.
are you on android? I believe Pocket Plays never shows ads I use this on my tablet as the twitch app was shitty for a long time
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.nrask.notifyme&hl=en_GB
I use Pocket Plays. It's not perfect. For example, it seems to have issues playing constantly updating vods of streams that are still live, but I still prefer it to that travesty of a twitch app.
There are some third party twitch apps like Pocket Plays that I've come to like more than the official app. This new version feels even worse. Putting more a focus on the social features I don't give a crap about while making navigation harder and more annoying.
Pocket Plays is better than the official twitch app IMHO. No ads, material design and I think it was made by a reddit user who made this app specifically to fix gripes with the official twitch app.
I switched to Pocket Plays a couple month ago when ads started popping up when switching between streams. The only the I miss is the pop out feature.
For streaming Twitch I'd recommend Pocket Plays. It can actually stream 60fps which I recall the regular app can't. Unless they changed that or I'm misremembering.
Pocket Plays / Twire on f-droid has a sleep timer for twitch built in and works great
If you're on mobile then use Pocket Play to view Twitch. If you're on PC you have to go to the streams Advanced settings and switch off HTML5 player. Only fixes I know. Adblock does not stop the Amazon ads because they are embedded.
If you're on Android there is Pocket Plays for Twitch .
Mind that if a stream is in 1080p60 you won't be able to cast it properly (on source quality, high works) unless you have a Chromecast Ultra.
Have they finally made any improvements to the mobile app yet?
As I found the original app so annoyingly designed, that I switched to an unofficial app that uses the official API instead.

The main thing that I just can't do without is the customizable feed size, cause original twitch feed is so huge as to be useless to me, but this one I can do this
I used to have issues with my 1st gen Chromecast, but the ultra has worked great for me. I am currently using a 1080p TV, but I don't think twitch streams any higher than that. I am also using the ethernet port.
Try using the "Pocket Plays" app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.nrask.notifyme&hl=en)
It lets you select the quality of your twitch streams. When I did this with my 1st gen I could get a constant high quality stream.
Hope this helps!
I believe you can select Audio Only in the official Twitch app - then just tune into the https://www.twitch.tv/nasa stream.
If the official app doesnt do it and you're on android check out pocket plays - that one can definitely do audio only streams.
that's because they both don't give you a selection fo the quality. Try this, you can select the quality manually
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.nrask.notifyme
it is anyway a better app than the own Twitch one
The Android app Pocket Plays for Twitch (Play Store Link) has support for BTTV emotes and best of all, an option to shrink the stream a bit to make room for the chat. I love watching streams on the go, but it's annoying to not get the full chat experience.
well to be fair, not using official twitch. I've never actually gotten that to cast once...
I use a third party android twitch app
Is Pocket Plays and Twire the same? Or what's the difference, because they look the exact same.
You can do this using a combination of the apps Pocket Plays and Web Video Caster. My LG smart TV won't play the Twitch streams directly but Web Video Caster can convert the stream to the TS format and stream it to the TV. Once you're playing a stream in Pocket Plays you can choose Use External Player from the three dots menu and then choose Web Video Caster to do the rest.
You might want to try custom twitch apps like pocket plays. Link is for android not sure if they exist for ios. But yeah, youtube was nice.
It could (depends on whether you mean a windows tablet) but there is an official twitch app which you can get on tablets. If for some reason that doesn't work you could try Pocket Plays.
Ah, when you cast Twitch doesn't actually send the quality you select on the app, it uses auto, up to 720p60 (same with YouTube)
There is an app that allows it though, I use it when casting because I don't like the forced auto quality.
It's the only app that let you you to have control over the cast quality. Open a 1080p60 stream, select source quality, cast and see how it goes.
Neat. I'll try using that one. Twitch's official Android application is quite lacking anyway, in my opinion.
For anyone having difficulty finding the app, it's actually called "Pocket <em>Plays</em> for Twitch", not "Pocket Cast" (like that podcast app, which I recommend highly b.t.w.).

Pocket plays for Twitch
Its a guy's first app and its pretty impressive. It doesn't seem to have the same issue with 60 fps streams that the regular twitch app does.
The only problems I've found with it are:
Pocket Plays has a sleep function. It pauses the stream after x amount of time, after which the normal screen time-out will start.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.nrask.notifyme&hl=en
It's an issue with the Twitch app afaik. Will need updating to continue playing when it loses focus.
Pocket Plays works well if you want an alternative.
By the way, here are ways you as a user can protest

Pocket Plays : Great alternative Twitch client. Looks good, responsive, and feature rich. Vortex is an honorable mention.
Newsfold : Nice Feedly RSS reader. I'm still a diehard Press user (even though it hasn't been updated in forever, the UI is still top notch and has all the features I could want and then some) but this is my go to alternative.
Flow for Reddit : I don't even care if this hasn't been updated in over a year, it still has my favorite UI/UX of any of the Reddit clients. Relay is my go to alternative.
Adguard : Adblocker that doesn't require root and blocks adds across the device, including in apps. Basically routes everything through a VPN to make it work. I pay for the desktop + mobile license and have been quite happy with it for over a year.. Some say that it's a battery drain but it if it is, it's unnoticeable to me. It's 50% for black friday ($5 for a year license on Android, $12.50 for desktop + Android). Has a 60 day money back guarantee for those that are cautious.
Heads up, this is not on the Play Store (for obvious reasons). Adguard does have an app on the store, but it's only a adblock for a couple web browser.
I use pocket plays for twitch which blocks ads and has more features than stock twitch app.
Try This twitch app

If you like Twich, Pocket Plays is awesome

Pocket plays for twitch, has a sleep timer which you can set :)
Try Pocket Plays if you are on Android. It is a pretty good twitch app that can cast in source.

There's Pocket Plays
If you're stuck on mobile, use either Blokada to block all ads served within the Twitch app (or while streaming through Chrome), or download Pocket Plays for Twitch which basically streams Twitch content without the ads.
If you're on Windows and still running in to ads on Twitch, Alternate Player for Twitch is a little inconvenient but will 100% block all Twitch-served ads.
Pocket Plays works flawlessly for me
Any reason why you're not using Pocket Plays?
if you have android use pocket plays https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.nrask.notifyme&hl=fr_CA
no ads and you have bttv + a bunch of other stuff
Mt first impressions if the app are not bad. I have some feedback and suggestions to make based on my experience using your app and some other competing Twitch steaming apps. I'm testing on a Nexus 6P running ver. 7.1.1.
Firstly, I like the name. The rhyme brings a nice ring to it. My first thoughts when I opened the app was that the Games and Channels pages felt really cluttered. Some spacing in between each game/channel tiles would help for clarity. Perhaps also centering the text underneath the tiles, having different font sizes, more spacing and/or allowing the user to customise the grid would be nice to see as well. I would also like to see some theme or general color customisation too; it'll bring some more character to the app. It feels a bit dull having everything in a plain black/white theme.
I haven't got the best network to test the buffering features you have got, so I don't have much feedback on that subject sorry.
When viewing a stream with the chat hidden, the top toolbar disappears way too quickly sometimes. I can hardly press a button before it disappears. I think it would be good to have a night-mode or dark background for when the chat is shown. Would also like to see portrait viewing with stream on top half of the screen and the chat on the lower half.
In my opinion the best Twitch app out there is Pocket Plays for Twitch. I think competing apps, Witch included, should try to implement similar features that Pocket Plays has. I believe the dev(s) have absolutely nailed the Twitch viewing experience on mobile devices with this app. The features it offers has me hooked and make me want to stick to using this app forever.
Overall I like Witch for Twitch and I believe there's clearly some room for improvement and potential for Witch. With some slight customisation to the UI and perhaps some of the suggestions I've made, the app can become even better. Hopefully my criticism wasn't too harsh and you are able to make some improvements from my comments. :)
Ok, here's my summary on this topic and ads in general:

How to get rid of ads in chrome in general:
There are also versions for another browsers like firefox

Twitch ads on desktop:
use the solution above or install Alternate Player for Twitch.

Twitch ads on Android:
Use Pocket Plays (it's better anyway, also supports bttv emotes) or it's fork Twire from F-Droid

Youtube ads on Android:
Install Vanced to get rid of ads and have premium Youtube functions like background playback. Alternative you can also use Newpipe from F-Droid.

If you have trouble installing these apps, message me and I can help.

Ads on iOS:
No reliable solution worked for my iPhone 7 and 11, but you can try the dns method below. Sorry apple users. Maybe someone know a better solution.

Systemwide adblock for Android:
You can use Blokada from F-Droid. Personally after years of testing, I think the best adblocker for android is Adguard (not Adguard vpn!) because it's highly customizable (you don't need root for that) and gets rid of ALL ads on your device. Yes, even in other Apps you'll never see ads again (you can exclude every app of course). The advantage of Adguard is: unlike DNS level blocker, it also removes annoying empty space that an ad would take so the websites and apps look clean, by filtering the traffic and markup (like uBlock) over the app via own local VPN on your device.

I've bought a lifetime license from their website (message me if you want to know how to get it much much cheaper), but you can try the app for free for a month.

Ads on other devices in your home including iOS:
If you have a raspberry pi and some tech skills you can set up Pi-hole and configure your router/devices to use that, but from my testing with that it's not really worth the time.

It's just an DNS level blocker, so it just blocks blacklisted domains which deliver ads.
You can get the same result by using free DNS Adblocking Servers. Some of them you can use to block porn sites for example if you have children. I'm using Adguard DNS servers, but you can use what you prefer. You can enter DNS servers on most devices and routers.
I'm using an Samsung smart tv and can enter the DNS server under network settings. The only ads I get on the tv browser and apps are from youtube.
Twire - https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.perflyst.twire/
It's based on Pocket Plays https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.nrask.notifyme
Both are open source (Pocket plays source) and I have both installed because they're also both pretty buggy and sometimes one works when the other doesn't. Pocket plays works without google play services installed, just complains about it. In some cases I just use twitch desktop site in Firefox when neither one works.
Try to cast with this application
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.nrask.notifyme
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.nrask.notifyme&hl=en_CA
Ads will still be injected into streams
There are three I know of, but all are only for Android
Sorry I mean pocket plays
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.nrask.notifyme
here, great dark mode as well. It's called Pocket Plays.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.nrask.notifyme&hl=en_GB
Have you tried using Pocket Plays? I've never had a problem with it and it has bttv emotes
The Twitch App is with Chromecast very unstable. You can use this App: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.nrask.notifyme works very good and looks clean and beautiful
there is a good alternative
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.nrask.notifyme This Android app supports BTTV emotes.
Pocket Plays for Twitch is pretty fucking sweet. Thanks!
You can also use Pocket Plays for Twitch since it has a built in sleep timer.
Try this new app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.nrask.notifyme
Bud I watch a lot of twitch on phone as well. I don't have any issues. There is 2 ways of doing it. Either downloading third party app like Pocket Plays or getting a dns + VPN adblock like Blokada which completely removes any ads from your device.
Too bad if you're a apple user both of these methods only work on Android
