Ranger / Skymaster Pilot, both by the same dev.
They are both pretty highly customisable, have secondary time and dual/watch-only battery, as well as the usual day/date and weather complications.
The Ranger even has a cool "night mode" which turns the hands and dials into a neon-colour, to mimic a traditional watch glow, which can be turned on/off with a tap, at a specific time, and can even use the sunrise/sunset information from your timezone to do it automatically.
I totally understand, it's fantastic.
Now I have to clear this up as it is a bit weird: as you can see on the store page it shows 24 hour markings, but it doesn't work like a 24 hour watch. Instead it's just a normal 12 hour rotation and the markings are incorrect. There is an option to change those markings with minutes, which I have done because at least those are correct either way. I'd prefer (correct) hour markings but even as it is this is my favorite watchface by far.
Really nice looking. But I wish there were more indicator options. The indicator options are whats keeping me with Ranger.
I really like the outlook watch face, they did an amazing job on it. But I also really like the Ranger ([link]) watch face as well.
Before my Urbane died, I would use a watchface with a nice ambient mode display (Ranger was my go to) and turn off tilt to wake but keep always-on on. Would get an easy 2-2.5 days out of it.
Thought I could do this on my Moto 360 v2 but the ambient mode is so god awful looking :(

I'm a huge fan of Ranger. Looks like an actual watch.
I have mine set to change color when it's night time to which is sweet.
you might want to try them one at a time, as it is possible they may interfere with one another.
Another watch face with a compass is the ranger watch face:
Not a dedicated app, but I like this watchface which has a compass complication built-in.
But I doubt a different app will give you results any different. Like mentioned, it's probably the calibration.
These two have wide notifications
There's quite a few which support step counters so it'll come down to personal choice.
Personally, I went from the Ranger face (which looked awesome but ate the battery on my Ticwatch E) to one called "Marine Commander" and haven't looked back.
It has the step counter etc you want but doesn't eat the battery at all which is actually really impressive. It does require AW 2.0 or higher, but since you're already on that - it'll work.
The classic Zuhanden faces are always good ones. Specifically, Ranger works real well with 2.0 . I think the bottom area supports wide complications as well as the normal ones.
ustwo, the ones behind the stock LG Sport/Style faces has another new one called Moods that has some pretty faces that support complications.
Other honorable mentions that are always good ones are Pujie Black, Minimal & Elegant, and WatchMaker.

This is one I played with a while back. It's not free but you can set up a night mode that is a very dim active setting. You can configure it to switch to night mode based on a preset time, or your set it to change at sunset.
Edit: not sure how it handles the cards/apps
For anyone else that was wondering... this is the watch face...
Agreed haha. Its the Ranger Military Watch Face. Link [link]
My two favorite stand-alone faces - Ranger and Skymaster. Classic and clean.
I like Watchmaker but I honestly got too frustrated with it - there are some fantastic faces but the weather is often completely wrong and faces that have settings regularly crash and lose their settings which is frustrating.
Pujie Black is great as well, but don't care for the looks as much as Ranger and Skymaster.
Also check out Wear Notify for Reddit (get your favorite subreddits pushed to your watch, as well as messages and responses) and Feel the Wear (which allows you to customize vibrations so you can tell the difference between an email and a text message).
This is pretty much the only face I've used since I got my 360.
Ranger... far and away my favorite.
My favourite watch face is Ranger, but I know that a lot of people on the subreddit like Skymaster. Both have configurable complications, and both have excellent ambient-mode faces as well.
Wear Mini Launcher just added a few (3) companion watch faces to the app (with colour/hand settings and customizable complications) that look very good as well.

I'm a fan of Ranger Military Watch Face by the same dev as Skymaster.
Here's a couple color examples: 1 2
Most people don't even realize I'm wearing a smart watch with this face, so if anybody else is going for that look... Turn "When to show night mode" to "Always show" and check "Disable minimal dimmed mode".
Looks like the Ranger Military Watchface
I have the same one: link
Ranger might be your best bet.
I'm late to the party, but I just got mine in the mail today. I bought it like new from Swappa for $300. This is my second AW watch (first was the Huawei Watch). I bought this because of the style and durability. I love my Huawei and have hardly worn my G-Shock or Citizen watches since I got the Huawei. My only issue with the Huawei Watch is the lack of real waterproofing and the fact that I am always super nervous about knocking it about when I'm at work.
I have no problem with the size of The Mission despite being a relatively smaller man and having small wrists (I often wear a G-Shock GA-100 which is roughly the same size but lighter). The only negative I have so far is the ambient mode. On my HW the ambient mode just dims the screen and drops the second hand with most watch faces. However, with the NM the ambient mode drops into this hyper ambient mode where it loses a lot of the detail of the watch face and even loses colors.
Watch faces/apps I've used on both the NM and HW are:
Ranger Military Watch Face by Zuhanden ([link])
Skymaster Piilot Watch Face by Zuhanden ([link])
Watchmaker Pro (several faces tried and the color is just shot in ambient mode).
With all of these faces the ambient mode is shit. I created an imgur album, linked below, to better get this point across. Has anyone else experienced this or is there something wrong with my used watch?
Ranger is worth a look. You can change which colours to display in ambient mode.
I don't know about on facer... but this is my favorite watch face so far.
Ranger Military watch face, dope!
I just got this one yesterday fro Ebay
Watch face is Ranger by Zuhanden
Using this one at the moment. The Blue/Grey theme looks pretty nice
Found it. Turns out Google works well.
This watch face is pretty similar to what your looking for.
Ranger and Odyssey both from the same group that made Skymaster have the same setup. Not sure about all the others from the developer - Zuhanden - but I'd check.
What about the many watch faces that are already available on the android store? For instance, the following has been so popular. Can we use them on ticwatch?
