This security policy "feature" rolled out earlier this year and seems to have been the cause of considerable frustration among people who like to streamline their device usage. As best I can tell, there's just no way to get around it when the display has been locked by a device administrator (this being how Tasker's System Lock Action does its work).
If you're rooted, you can simply use the Code/Run Shell Action to execute input keyevent 26
; for all intents and purposes, this works exactly as if you'd locked via the power button.
You can send that event programmatically, but the INJECT_EVENTS
permission can only be granted to system packages, so that ended up being a no-go in my tinkering.
As a last resort, you can minimize your screen timeout instead of explicitly locking; the effect is much the same without disabling fingerprint unlock.
If you don't want or need any of the bells and whistles that come with that app (and you're willing to get your hands a little dirty), you can just set the screen_off_timeout
system setting to 0 instead of using System Lock, but you'll then need to restore its old value with, say, a Display On Event.
How about using Smart Lock to keep it unlocked when it's near you (if you have a smartwatch, or bluetooth headset connected)? I think it might also work for wifi networks too. I use the always-on-display power button enabled by this little app - I just double tap the display and I am right back on the last screen I used.
I use <strong>Screen off via short timeout</strong> to turn off screen from the edge panel:
Spares my power button + easier than to press the button when the phone is laying on my desk.
As of now there's really only two non-root ways for 3rd party apps to turn the screen off:
What you're looking for is the second option, since it doesn't require root and won't forcefully lock up your biometric unlocks.
Sadly, not much apps use the second approach. I'm only aware of this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dynalogix.screenoff.ultra.quick.timeout
Hmm, if you have a Samsung phone, Bixby allows for turning off the screen without any of the negative side-effects. You can also set it as the last action in a Quick Command so it'll perform your routine, then lock the screen.
I had a navigation app burnt into my old Note 1. My theory was that since I used it for a long trip the same screen was shown for several hours at the highest brightness (to fight the strong sun).
I am more careful with navigation apps nowadays: I use them in split screen mode constantly adjusting the window size to move things around. Split screen is useful for music controls on the same screen anyway.
I am too using AOD, though only since last October, but day and night (it is my night clock too). I plan to exchange to a Note 8 within half a year I hope no burn in will happen until then.
With the on-screen power button in the AOD (by Screen off via short timeout) now I couldn't live without AOD any more...
I see you solved it, but anyone using a "Screen Off + Lock" type of app will also cause the fingerprint or iris unlock not to work (you get the famous "Enter password instead of using biometric recognition because of security policy" message), and these "Screen off + lock" apps will lock the phone even if SmartLock would otherwise keep it unlocked. This is why Nova Launcher Lock action is not recommended, as it is using the same method.
The trick is to use a "Screen off" only app, instead of "Screen off + Lock". You will find that while there are 1000 "Screen off + Lock" apps, it is hard to find a "Screen off" only. One I can recommend is <strong>Screen off via short timeout</strong> which works reliably on the Note 7.
How do you turn off the screen? This message appears if you use a screen off + lock app.
But there is a good workaround, it's an app called <strong>Screen off via short timeout</strong>. It's not free, but the cleanest solution I found to turn off the screen without locking the device. I mean the device will lock but you will be able to unlock it without using your pin or pattern.
Here's a little app, all it does is it turns off the screen BUT: without explicitly locking device. Does not affect unlocking. (It temporarily sets an ultra short screen timeout to make screen turn off without explicitly locking the device. The lock screen will activate according to your device settings. This technique does not interfere with Smart Lock, Fingerprint or other biometric unlock methods.)

No need to enter PIN/password when unlocking, works with fingerprint reader etc.
I recommend this app to spare your power button as much as possible: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dynalogix.screenoff.ultra.quick.timeout
Offers many alternative ways to turn off the screen. It's been working reliably for me for years. Developer is also part of this Note 8 community afaik.

Unlike other screen off apps, this does not trigger the security policy warning which prevents the use of fingerprint / iris to unlock my phone. I found this app for my Note 7, but it worked equally well on my S7 Edge and now on my Note 8.
Yes. Search for an app called something like Screen Off Ultra Short Timeout. It has a setting for double tap to wake that puts the icon on Active On Display.

Thanks. Specifically, the S7 has an annoyance, that if you lock it by any of the usual apps or Tasker System Lock, it won't unlock with the fingerprint sensor, but insists you use your PIN due to "a security policy".
Tasker to the rescue, we can force the screen black by setting a short display timeout, but there's a really nice app designed for the S7. Here's the link.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dynalogix.screenoff.ultra.quick.timeout&hl=en
No root, smart lock works, it's a paid app at approx 1/1000th the cost of an S7 so hardly onerous.
Here's a little app, all it does is it turns off the screen BUT: without explicitly locking device. Does not affect unlocking. You can assign it to Nova Launcher gesture to turn off screen without the "security policy" message.

Do you use some app that explicitly locks the screen? That cannot be unlocked using biometrics.
For screen off don't use screen-off-and-lock apps. Try Screen Off Via Short Timeout. It's tested to work well with S9.
Yup, it's possible.
However, you'll have to keep two things in mind:
To do what you want, you'll need to download a screen locking app.
The Screen Locking app you download must have these two features:
For 3rd party apps, there's two methods to lock your screen. One method is through Device Admin and the other method is through having a very short Screen Timeout period.
Device Admin is more immediate, but Android devices will fully lock the device through this method and require you to enter in your password manually to unlock. The SPen Remote Unlock cannot bypass this.
Therefore, only the Screen Timeout method will do what you want. It'll have a small delay (1.5 seconds from what I tested), but it retains the ability for you to unlock by SPen Remote Unlock.
So to do this in steps:
Whenever you want to lock with SPen, press and hold the SPen button.
When you want to unlock, single press the SPen button. Note that you need the Unlock with SPen button for this to work.

Lastly, I have tested this method and can verify it works.
Pair it with some bluetooth device to keep it unlocked using SmartLock. The obvious device is a smartwatch of course, having an Android Wear watch I seldom need to unlock my phone via fingerprint or others. If you don't have a smartwatch you could use a bluetooth headset for example. As long as the headset is near enough to stay connected the phone will not lock.
The fingerprint detection gets blocked when you use any app that directly locks the screen. Then you are forced to enter your pin, pattern or password to unlock. One good app I found to get around this is Screen off via short timeout. I was happy to support the developer since he develops directly for S7 and the app includes all kind of S7 Edge specific tricks and workarounds regarding turning the screen on and off.
This comes close, it costs £1.19, it puts up a power button, respects security, but Samsung specific.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dynalogix.screenoff.ultra.quick.timeout
I have no connection to the developer.
I only have an S7. I guess your S8 locks and requires a PIN right?
I have a solution on my S7. I can turn the phone on or off, without locking, or with locking, the former can be configured with or without fingerprint.
I use AutoTools and a paid app.
> I can't find a way to disable this feature. Does anyone know a way around it?
This paid app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dynalogix.screenoff.ultra.quick.timeout&hl=en_GB
Two more paid apps (total a few $) Tasker & AutoTools
When you turn back on with the button added to AoD by the first app, you get straight in, no fingerprint, no PIN.
When you reduce the timeout with the demo video method, or do a system lock, screen locks and you need fingerprint or PIN.
You can do it in various ways, but if you need an easy way, just run this app from Tasker.

you need the app I linked. What's new in Nougat is that you can add apps like Screen off via short timeout to your quick settings.
That's why you need the Screen Off via short timeout app, it gets around the annoying privacy issues, because it does not actually lock the screen, it just sets a very short screen timeout temporarily. You can assign this app to any gesture in Nova (or other apps). I have it in the app edge panel too.
Wednesday update
Day 4 with Nougat.
Happy days :-) No-one likes negativity, and in my experience the face in the mirror is the root cause of most bugs. I purged anything flaky from my profiles and tasks, regression tested, and rebooted a few times.
The phone is responsive again. Only one thing is outstanding: Nova Launcher needs a kick to redraw sometimes, but what I'm doing is dodgy (openng a folder that's not on the current page, expecting it to open on the current page) so no complaints.
If you have an S7, AutoTools can set the "lock the screen N seconds after it goes off" timeout, and it works well with this app, which I think pioneered the trick of disabling the S7's aggressive tendency to lock. EDIT: Double tap to wake!
For this single use it is worth it. You can turn off everything else, and just swipe in from the right for the flash light. Anytime, from any app.
I can also recommend the app-edge panels for apps which are typically needed while using other apps:
It's just a matter of getting into the habbit of using these. Few of us bought the edge phone because of the edge panels, but I found them to be pretty useful.
Make sure to turn off the screen using the power key or screen timeout. Most screen-off apps will mess up Smart Lock and you can't even use your fingerprint, falls back to PIN/Pattern. I found one screen off app that is compatible with Smart Lock: Screen off via short timeout
Any app that uses Device Administrator to lock your phone will override SmartLock. Use apps like <strong>Screen Off via Short Timeout</strong> to turn off screen without directly locking phone.
1)
Move any app on SD card (including humongous VR games!)
I gained 7GB internal space, now it's not constantly on the verge of full!
2)
Turn OFF the phone from the Quick Settings area (in notification shade) → Screenshot
3)
Turn ON the phone by double tapping the power icon in the Always ON Display → Screenshot
4)
Force activities to be resizable → see 1) → you can use any app in split screen!
I use the tiny app <strong>Screen on via short timeout</strong>:
it always places a "power on" notification icon in the Always On Display which I can double tap to wake up the phone. I love this!
The app removes the notification while your screen is on, and only creates the notification when the screen turns off. So it doesn't clutter your notifications normally, but makes sure you have at least this notification that you can double tap. And it doesn't start any unneeded apps, just turns on the screen. Really cool!
Plus it enables you to turn off the screen without pressing the hardware power button. On Nougat we can place the off button on the Quick Settings bar:
It is better than normal "screen off" apps because in my experience those mess with the privacy and I wasn't able to unlock my phone using my fingerprint, and other Screen Off apps interfere with SmartLock so I couldn't have my phone unlocked while at home or near my Smartwatch. <strong>Screen Off via short timeout</strong> doesn't have any of these issues.
The only problem is that this app is not free (it was like $1), but I feel ok supporting developers who make apps specifically for the S7 / S7 Edge.
Two ways to use the screen instead of the power button:
1)
Turn OFF the phone from the Quick Settings area (in notification shade) → Screenshot
2)
Turn ON the phone by double tapping the power icon in the Always ON Display → Screenshot

Don't disable auto brightness. Adaptive auto brightness is one of the coolest features of this phone. You can still adjust the brightness while keeping the auto mode on: the phone will tune itself to your taste and needs within a few days, and you will not have to adjust brightness ever again!
2.
Turn on Always On Display. It is one of the unique abilities of the S7, no other phone can do this: it will display the time, and other status information even when the screen is off. Without draining your battery (almost, it has a very small impact, especially compared to how cool it is that you never have to press the power button to see the time).
3.
Talking about the power button: if you already received the Nougat update (Android 7.0) you will be able to turn on or off the phone without pressing the power button: (very handy, similar to knock-knock on LG phones)
Install this little app: Screen off via short timeout:
4.
You don't need to disable too many things to get a good battery life, just use your phone for a few days and the automatic power management will kick in and hibernate little used apps. Definitely don't install Greenify or other task killers, they do more harm than good. Power management in Marshmallow/Nougat plus the Auto Power Management do a better job out of the box. You just have to have 3-4 days of patience for them to get a sense of your usage and start to work for you.
5.
Unless you are a very heavy facebook user, you should still disable the Facebook and Messanger apps and check Facebook lite or Swipe for Facebook instead. The former is only available from apkmirror in western countries.
6.
Get a Gear VR. VR on this phone is really great.
7.
Search for "Smart Lock" in the settings, it is the Lollipop (Android 5.1-) feature that keeps your phone unlocked while connected to certain devices or networks.
both made possible after the Nougat update using the tiny utility "Screen off via short timeout"
I have a 2-click access to flashlight: I use the app screen off via short timeout which puts a "power on" icon on my AOD: screenshot
Once the screen is on (unlocked or at the lock screen) I can turn on the flash light from the quick settings area: Screen shot
The AOD is limited to only 4 icons, I don't think I would want a dedicated flash light button in there. This power-on icon already takes up one space, but at least this seems to let other notifications to take precedence

Screen off via short timeout I have the power off icon in my quick settings and in the edge panel (aligned with the real power button).
Not only saves my hardware button from wear, but when my Note 8 is on the desk it's also more convenient than to reach for the side button.
There are many screen off apps, but this turns off the screen without disabling the biometric unlock methods (fingerprint, iris). Added nice touch is the adaptive icons which make it blend in even better. I have been using for two years, best dollar I've spent :)
Looks like a highlight when selecting icons using a hardware keyboard (or soft keyboard arrow keys?) Does it come after you connect a hardware keyboard (or selfie stick, gamepad which might also emulate hardware keyboards)?
Could also be related to some accessibility mode. Note: you do not need to enable Nova Launcher's accessibility mode neither for accessing the notification shade nor for turning the screen off without locking the device.
For the later I would recommend the app Screen Off via Short Timeout. Great little utility:
I use this app and it works perfectly

Wake by double tapping icon on Active On Display.
Screen off via short timeout is a workaround for the issues other Screen-off apps have: this does not eplicitely lock the device, so SmartLock keeps working, Fingerprint unlock stays functional.
I am working on this app specifically for the S7 / S7 Edge - now utilizing the new Nougat features:
Samsung phones are unique because they allow a setting of just 2 seconds for the screen timeout (owners of other brands are not so lucky, Nexus / Pixel has to wait 7 seconds, LG owners have to wait 15 seconds!)

To make it sleep is a little trickier, because Screen Off apps usually lock your phone too, which interferes with finger print security and Smart Lock (you will be forced to use your pin code or pattern the next time you want to unlock).
