Weird that there are 2 different Square Enix: this one, and the one that publishes Secret of Mana and Dragon Quest: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.square_enix.secret
And they have a different set of games. Why would be like that? The name is the same except for the "Co." at the end of the name
I hate that you are being downvoted for this simple and easy misunderstanding. Secret of mana came out in 93 whereas chronotrigger came out in 95.
Both games were published by square (not square Enix like previous posters mentioned, that merger won't happen for another decade).
The art style is similar but only mostly with background art and the main character. The biggest differences are between the sidekicks (slash playable characters) and of course the story.
Those 2 years between the games is the deal breaker. Since I played secret of mana first, it made a HUGE impression on me, more so than chronotrigger could (albeit it was still an amazing game). The secret of mana was a WONDERFUL game with an amazing storyline and quite frankly the higher ratings it has (compared to other games) deserve them.
A lot of people my age may have missed Chronotriggerand perhaps only remember secret of mana (and hopefully not secret of evermore which I felt was lacking). Being judged for this confusion is a sad although understood after effect. I shall do my best to post links for comparison.
The only game that has moved me since was kingdom hearts and holy shit as an adult that game was an emotional roller coaster.
It's not necessary to pirate it line the other commentor replying suggests. You can buy it on Switch, or on https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.square_enix.secret&hl=en and play it on a variety of devices, including computers.
That'd be interesting having it twice on the same Phone :P
Yes, they do. If that is a big gripe of yours with JRPGs, I still have you covered though!
Secret of Mana would be my go-to recommendation for real-time combat. The story (while not as great as CT or BoF3 imho) still holds up very well and the game would be in my top 5 JRPGs I have ever played. Really, anything by SQUARE ENIX can be assumed to be fantastic until proven otherwise (which won't happen).
EDIT: You can even get SoM as an app!

wowowowowowow
Mobile doesn't suck. It is just another platform but with the microtransactions it is infested with greed.
However there are also good games like Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger and some other Final Fantasy games. AND there is even Don't Starve: Pocket Edition
ONI is still only in early access and while a release on mobile might not coming this year since they already have a mobile version of don't starve I think this could also happen for ONI.
Not exactly "HD", but it's probably the closest you can get right now.

Haha to help you out here is the Android port of SoM: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.square_enix.secret&hl=en
If you want to play Secret of Mana 2 (A fantastic game IMHO) you can actually do so using: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bubblezapgames.supergnes&hl=en (there is a free one too but I haven't tried it) And the fan translated game is here: http://www.fantasyanime.com/mana/som2downloads.htm (I can verify it works later today)
My apologies to your significant other ;)
Edit: Yeah seems that ROM works, it gives a warning but works. You can also play ROMs on your PC if you prefer. Either way SoM 2 is too good to pass up IMHO.
