If it is an official PS4 controller and not a 3rd-party one, try this compatibility app to see if it works READ THE DESCRIPTION OF THE APP IN FULL!!!, then if it does detect and can show it working, you can purchase the actual paid app by the person to have it actually work.

You can use Bluetooth... Xbox360 has native support. Try this app out the full version os only a few bucks. You can use either OTG to full USB A or the Micro to USB-C. Either works to pair it up
Pretty sure you need to be rooted to change some bluetooth stuff to get it to work (so you're outta luck there) , but you can have a look at this :

I've been down this road ages ago when I had a rooted galaxy s7, it really isn't worth the hassle. I'd recommend something like the gamesir t4 for ease of use and affordability.
Unfortunately in most cases you have to root the phone. In rare exceptions the an app will make it work. To see if it will work on your phone use this app :

That won't make it work, that will simply see if your phone is compatible to even use one.
You can check compatibility using this app, and if it says it's compatible, you can purchase the full Sixaxis Controller app that will let you connect PS3/PS4 controllers.
This will tell you if your phone works with PlayStation 3 or 4 controllers and the accompanying app is also great but it's a paid app I believe.
On an Android phone? Where did you fail? I believe you need root access and there are a bunch of different apps that will help you. Start with this one, which will check compatibility for the different Playstation controllers - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dancingpixelstudios.sixaxiscompatibilitychecker&hl=en
If you already have a ps3/ps4 controller and you have a rooted phone, try the sixaxis app (there is a tester app to see if it works before you buy the app)

Sixaxis allows you to custom map the buttons, which is something other controllers don't offer and people have been asking for this
I'm using a ps3 controller on note 4 with lollipop still so can't comment on s6/s7 and marshmallow but I believe the latest update works on mm
only issue i've got is you can't use bluetooth headphones at the same time. But it works with all games I've tried
Maybe it's not usable everywhere and only in specific apps which are configured for the controller. Have you made that sure?
Also, there's these two apps which might be helpful, a compatibility checker and one that sets the controller up what it should do if you press specific buttons on it. Last one's helpful if the app isn't compatible with controllers, but requires root. So if you have root, try it with that app, if it doesn't work with that, you can be sure somethings wrong with the connection. (For trying if it works only, you can get the app refunded within 15 minutes after buying anyways)
You have to be rooted in order to work but theoretically it should work with any android device. There's a compatibility checker you can download and it'll let you know if it'll work before you take the plunge

Test it out before buying
Shame. I have used an xbox 360 controller with decent results using the OTG cable.
You could try this?
Use Sixaxis Controller so you use your controller wirelessly over bluetooth but make sure your PS3 Controller is compatible by using this app
A great app to get paid in play store credit for answering simple surveys is Google Opinion Rewards . it's really good I've made $14.07 in the last 8 months of using it but be warned the credits expire after a year. It's not hard and it will only take a minute out of your day to complete a survey and can reward you as a high as a dollar.
Swiftkey is a great keyboard espicially if you're using the tablet in landscape mode where it splits the keyboard in half for ease of use.
Poweramp Music Player imo the best music player for android that I've used, this is a trial version for 14 days so try it out and if you like it go buy the unlocker.
Limbo for some reason I loved playing this game on my tablet more than on my PC.
There's this weird glitch in the YouTube app where when you'll have a video full screened and you can still see the notification bar and 3 dots at the bottom, it breaks away from the immersion from watching a video and the only way to fix it was closing youtube then re-opening it. Found this useful app called Hide System Bar it force hides the notification bar and bottom touch keys. Not sure if this is a problem on lollipop but if it is and you hate this problem too you should probably consider checking this out!
A great launcher for tablets is Smart Launcher Pro 2 it's ease of use and efficient way of organising apps is great and yes this is Pro 3 but imo it went back a step with a few things so I'm still on 2 but you probably won't mind these problems also it's on sale.
And nice live wallpaper called Koi, paired with Smart Launcher it makes the whole tablet experience very pleasant.
Sorry for the long wall of text but you asked and I delivered! have a nice day :-)
You'll need to be rooted on the device you want to pair the controller to. You'll also need a USB cable to connect the controller a PC in order to do the initial config. On your PC download the SixAxisPairTool from the Dancing Pixel site
Download The compatibility checker first and run it to make sure you're all compatible. Then download the sixaxis app itself. Once downloaded, open the app, and click start. Grant the app root access, and then at the bottom of your screen you will see the 'local bluetooth address'
Go to your computer, run the SixAxisPairTool and when it says 'searching' plug in the controller. Once the program reads out a MAC address, put in the MAC of the device you want to pair it to (local bluetooth address from the previous steps) and click update. Now it will pair with your device.
Back on the device, stop and restart the SixAxis Controller app, once it has been started again, you should be able to press the PS button on the controller and be paired. It will remain that simple unless you pair the controller with another device, in which case you'll have to manually re-pair it to your android device again with the PC utility.
Check out "Sixaxis Compatibility Checker" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dancingpixelstudios.sixaxiscompatibilitychecker

You can use this app. The controller can be paired with the usb cable.
Download Sixaxis Compatibility Checker .
This is a fairly expensive setup but all the components are solid and work well with SNES, PSP, and PSX emulation. The only downside is the Sixaxis apps require root access to use bluetooth.
