Nice job man, the more you stop yourself from smoking in the most tempting situations the stronger your will become and you will be able to fight the next urge much easier.
Btw; in case you have android and like using apps, i build the game of Memory inside my newly released quit smoking app to help people pass the time until the urge passes. feel free to check it out and let me know if you have ideas about it.
Going cold turkey will surely add some stress in the beginning. So i must say yes, it will make things harder for you if you already have major stress such as studying for finals.
There is a work around for this however; I advise you start quitting now but not cold turkey. In other words "constant reduction".
This way you start doing your body good immediately but avoid the huge withdrawal symptoms. You can use the "Slow Mode" function of my newly released android app. It will create a plan for you configured for however period you like. So set it for 60 days for example and you will become a non smoker after 2 months with much less pain.
This strong urges will pass and get much weaker in time. Scientifically speaking an urge averages 3 minutes regardless of how strong. So all you need to do pass 3 minutes of time. You can do it for sure, believe in your self!
You can use the Memory game i have in my android app to help you pass the time. My wife starts playing the game and ends up staying there for at least 10 minutes.
Hahaha. Thanks for the compliment my friend!
I call it "EasyQuit". You can download it from the play store here.
Let me know if you have any questions or ideas. There is an email option from inside the app.

This really helps too, gives you milestones for your health, and you can plug in how much a pack of smokes is so you can see in just a couple weeks how much you save.
The most important thing to remember is cigarettes do NOTHING for you. Allen Carr's Easy way to stop smoking" helps dispell the BS we use to justify smoking.
Not going to lie, first 3 days are REALLY hard, then the next two weeks will be challenging, but easier. After that it's really just mental. Nicotine is a powerful drug, if you can go cold turkey, I think it's the best method. If you fall off the wagon, go again. But I think you got this!
Quit while you're ahead! When I started smoking I told myself I would quit when I no longer got a head rush from 1 cigarette. Here I am 24 years later, probably more than 100, 000 cigarettes later, never getting a buzz of it, knowing it's leading to a slow painful death, and still I crave it.
Take action and break the chain while it's weak. IT'S ALWAYS EVER DOWNHILL!!!!!!
Google quit smoking resources there's a lot that can help you understand how addiction works and how to break the associations you talk about.
When I have quit for months at a time I've found this app helpful: Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.herzberg.easyquitsmoking Iphone: https://itunes.apple.com/app/id1508110799

I especially liked the colours, graphics, and the trigger tracker.
r/atheism is a good support sub for those who need it.
I'm sorry you have to deal with this for another 3 years. Sometimes we get dealt a shit hand, and really just need to do our best to find ways to make it easier. Lots of self care, put up good boundaries, and find things to do to keep yourself occupied and out of the home as much as you can.
As far as smoking, I smoked for longer than you have lived. It is an incredibly hard habit to kick, and many of us use it as a form of self abuse, even if it's subconscious. I read "The easy way to quit smoking" by Allen car and watched a few free videos I found online. It was a bit cheesy. But once you can convince yourself that cigarettes aren't actually calming you, it becomes easier to quit. It's expensive, it makes you smell, and it increases your likely hood of a whole host of complications down the line too. I quit at 5.50 dollars a pack and after 832 days I've saved $4279! Get a stop smoking app to track your progress.

> I find it hilarious how people change their friendship with you based on your habits and perceived social value to them!
Yup, i dropped a group of 10 people from being "my friends" because they did this exact same thing. I was suddenly the asshole to them because i no longer wanted to smoke a pack a day...
btw, you can use EasyQuit to help you pass the time when urges come, it has a memory game in it. Let me know if you have improvements for the app, i am the developer
Good luck in your joureny, you can do it.
