"Want to easily launch your non-Leanback sideloaded apps from your homescreen? The Tv App Repo generates Leanback shortcuts and lets you install them. These tiny apps simply redirect you to the actual app."
I use MCPE on Android TV and I would recommend going that way, It works perfectly, just use this app to make a shortcut in your launcher: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=news.androidtv.tvapprepo.playstore
You don't even need to sideload it, just install it to your device from the Play Store website. Updates work perfectly, and you can even sign up for beta versions.
Are you referring to this it's about to get a big update tomorrow too crosses fingers hope it's creating shortcuts to files next ;)
Edit: here's a screenshot of my home screen and as you can see TV App Repo generated shortcut apks (tiny programs that act as a short cut to a sideloaded app that is then placed on the lean back launcher) Chrome and Instashare are both sideloaded and here they are on my home screen ;)

I've no affiliation with the app, just a happy user who finds it very useful.
You don't need to sideload File Commander, it's in the Android TV Play Store, you just have to search for it
If you're trying to sideload a different app you can use TV App Repo for it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=news.androidtv.tvapprepo.playstore
1) Install the Aptoide Alternate Apps store using a USB stick and X-Plore file manager:
2) Install Chrome from that Aptooid store.
3) Install the TV App Repo App to create a Chrome shortcut for App launching: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=news.androidtv.tvapprepo.playstore&hl=en
4) Buy a Plug N Play - Air Mouse / mini Keyboard remote like a MINIX A2 lite. the MI Box remote will not cut it when using an Android Web Browser on a TV screen.
Late to the party, but I can't believe no one mentioned Tv App Repo.

It's available from the TV Play Store, and it creates native leanback shortcuts for non-leanback apps.
This is exactly what you're looking for.
Not sure what you mean but TV App Repo might be what you're looking for, it adds lean back short cuts to the app from the home screen
I would say, in your case Shield is a better option, because it is a platform which has the 4k content services.
Actually i was talking about the addons ... but I see they auto-install via my login -- which is awesome.
As far as launching, check out TvAppRepo
Install TV App Repo (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=news.androidtv.tvapprepo.playstore) and with that app you can easily create AndroidTV shortcuts for direct launch of non-android tv apps.
I don't know what exactly you're trying to do, but download TV App Repo. It lets you create leanback launcher shortcuts for sideloaded APKs.
Also if you're looking for a good screensaver, Aerial Dream is amazing.
can I suggest TV app repo from the play store. It doesn't show on the device but does allow it to be added if you access the store on your PC. This allows you to add leanback shortcuts for sideloaded apps. It also allows installing of APKs through tinyurl shortcuts. If you don't trust the ones it links to just set your own up.
The plus side is you can totally remove the ES file explorer as its just become bloated

That's just an alternate launcher though, and it includes every single app. Bit of a pain to navigate.
TV App Repo can actually create distinct icons for them on the home screen. Apparently App Cloner can too, but I was never able to get it to work right.
You can use this app to create shortcuts to apps you have sideloaded and that appears in the leanback launcher, I use it myself.

Hi,
Ok, your desktop version number match dev build #254
>1- Why TV arm apk's not working? You might be wondering why did you try mobile apk on your TV? Reason is:I tried to install TV arm apk's instead of mobile but only arm ones worked but they worked really bad that they continuously gave me "Popcorntime will be restarted" error so I continued with mobile apk mentioned above and it worked. I wonder if other android TV owners experienced this? TV ones are not working for you too?
I don't have an Android TV device myself, but I think some users said the android mobile version worked better than the android TV version. Maybe some android TV users will give you more details.
>2- On the movie (A Cure for Wellness) my desktop computer finds the subtitles correctly but the version on my Android TV can't find any subtitle for the same movie. Is this normal? Are they checking different locations?
I have the same results as you. I guess It's because it is implemented a bit differently on desktop and android versions.
>3- How do you choose genres in this mobile apk on TV? Is it touchscreen or what? It seems I can not select any genre with remote control.
This mobile apk is optimised for tablets and smartphones so usage via remote control could be painful, maybe you should with if wireless keyboard or mouse are better
>4- When I install not working YV-APK's I can see popcorntime icon on my applications screen on my TV but when I install Mobile apk above, I can not see Popcorntime icon. Is this normal?
I think it is, I think some android app could help you to create this icon.
edit: Look at Tv App Repo
>5- Am I missing something overall?
I guess you have a builtin chromecast feature in your Sony Android TV. Does PT desktop can detect and cast to it correctly?
edit: Updated answer to question 4
You can create leanback icons with TV App Repo: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=news.androidtv.tvapprepo.playstore
TV App Repo is available in the Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=news.androidtv.tvapprepo.playstore
Chrome is supported as a browser, but it's not super friendly to use on a SHIELD. It's the same basic phone style layout, blown up a little bigger.
True, it doesn't appear to be available to install directly from the Play Store app on the SHIELD, but yea, you can always just download the .apk from apkmirror and install it manually that way. You also MIGHT have to create a "shortcut" to the app if you want to add it to your home screen for quick access because with Oreo, I think sideloaded apps don't appear under the "Apps" slide-out menu.
I also have the Logitech K400 bluetooth kb/mouse pad combo and it works great with mostly everything on the SHIELD.

You can't find it in the Google Play Store on mobile. Just on your TV or the Play Store website
