>The lack of functionality of the now-mandatory Smart TV is a perfect example of what's going to happen to all the IoT kitchen tech. A $50 Roku stick is infinitely more usable than my 2018 Samsung Smart TV.
Exactly. You have to hunt to find a "dumb" TV these days. I got a TV thinking it was "mostly dumb", but the damn thing required* me to install a rather intrusive app to a device with 'net access, and then the device automatically attached the TV to the Wifi...
Uhhhh... fuck you? Took a fresh device, wiped it. Installed the app. Immediately blocked the TV at the firewall, did the configurations I wanted, and promptly locked it all back down again.
* Can't access the Setup screens with on-TV buttons, and the included remote is so "simple", it doesn't even have numbers on it. they really expected people to just use the app I suspect.
I have last years model of P-series before this new look. Seems like it's the exact same TV, just that it now comes with the tablet. My set already plays anything that can be cast to a chromecast. Wondering if I can download the tablet software and use it with my set.
Edit: found it. Now I know what I'm doing when I get home.
Yeah. I use it more than my remote alot of times since I can get to all the menus faster. But it has all the remote functions/controls built in as well.

What both /u/AaronNMorrisonII and /u/Muniosi_returns says is only half right.
Only certain series of vizio smart tvs have any app control past normal casting features. And if you look at the apps ratings, it's almost never the answer to your question.

Pardon if these are dumb questions but is TV online through ethernet or wifi? If wifi, are phone and TV on the same SSID? Have you checked if the Google Home app can connect to TV or if any apps on phone can cast? And this is the app you're trying to pair to TV?

This app serves as your remote and you can access all system settings with it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vizio.vue.launcher
I know you're asking about the Google Home app, but have you tried using the Vizio Smartcast app?
Have you tried their official app? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vizio.vue.launcher
