I use the Google Now launcher, but with an Xposed module that lets me customize many aspects of it - such as the grid size and what icons are used.
GEL + xGELs + CM themes is the way to go for me.
There is an Xposed module Xposed GEL Settings [ROOT] which lets you change the grid size in Google Now Launcher among other things.
well it is true, EXCEPT if you install XGELS. best xposed module ever. it basically adds most of nova's features to GNL. although it'd probably be better to just use nova, i really happen to like the swipe for google now thing.
the screenshots on the play store really dont do it justice, here's my homescreen for reference.
Yeah, you can set the color and transparency of the search bar using Xposed GEL Settings (Play store link and XDA page).
If you make the search bar color toward the white end of the spectrum and transparent you get the new colored text as shown. If you move it to the black end, even if it's still fully transparent the Google text turns white. Currently the microphone is always colored, but I'm hoping that will be controllable in the future for users that don't like it. With most other themes I would prefer to not have the colors.
If you use Google Now Launcher and xposed, check out Xposed GEL Settings, it has an option to do exactly what you're describing.
Xposed and XGELS if you're using the default Google Launcher.
otherwise, Nova and other launchers should have the ability to change icon sizes.
Which app did you uninstall? Freedom or the app you wanted to make a purchase for? I know that some apps will flat-out refuse to accept payment if Freedom is even installed. Try uninstalling Freedom (and leaving it uninstalled), and if that doesn't work, clear your phone's cache and try again.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.theknut.xposedgelsettings&hl=en refuses payment in the manner described above, i believe.
If you're rooted, Xposed GEL Settings can do that and so much more. I can't really recommend it enough. The developer is also fantastic.

This is one I use that I haven't seen mentioned elsewhere. If you use Google Now Launcher (I personally love the Now integration in the launcher) this adds lots of tweaks that make it better compete with Nova as far as customization of icons, labels, folders, app drawer, etc
Unfortunately no, Google Now Launcher does not have that feature.
Alternative options:
The stock Google Experience Launcher with XGELS.

I own Nova prime, but always go back, even without xposed. I just like the google now integration. Considering that swipe up from home has been replaced with google now on tap, I don't see myself switching.
Really....
All applications that are either xposed modules or inject/block functions in other apps that can be currently found in the App Store.
Google just blocked AdBlock and others because they directly made it obvious that they're hurting Google's bottom line. Google abuses their ToS just like Apple does. The ToS isn't to protect users. It's to protect the profit of the store owners. Simple as that.
If you're rooted and have the Xposed framework installed, XGELS let's you do pretty much anything you want to the GNL.
Xposed GEL Settings - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.theknut.xposedgelsettings&hl=en
It gives the stock google launcher customization options.
Have you considered customizing the GNL with Xposed GEL Settings?
There's an Xposed module that might be solve this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.theknut.xposedgelsettings
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.theknut.xposedgelsettings Requires Xposed. Maybe IAP for icon packs based on what I understood from the description.
this should work....and its the only way to do it really. get lots of other functionality as well.
If you're rooted and have Xposed you can use a module - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.theknut.xposedgelsettings
Otherwise I'm not aware of a method to do so.
If you have Xposed, you can use Xposed GEL Settings to add Nova like features to Google Now launcher
Install Xposed, then XGELS module.
Edit: Just noticed you're on 5.1. Sorry, Xposed isn't working on 5.1 yet..
