For future reference, Songkick or The Boston Calendar are pretty good resources to find spontaneous events and live venues. They should let you know what's happening on any particular night.
thanks for the interest. If this appealed to you I'd recommend signing up for the AMC Young Members google group, where you can easily sign up for casual local hikes that are social in nature. I'm hoping to lead a few trips this summer. Here is the sign up link;
There are a ton of Groupons for the saltwater fishing charters.

They're not cheap, but it'd probably be a fun time. On the saltwater one, they'll probably take you to a mackerel spot if the good fish aren't biting. and you can at least go home with plenty of bait.
If job hunting is what you're after, I'd check out the two hundred networking events happening all week every week in Boston. Definitely more tech related but there's always tons of soft skills roles like sales, copywriting, and law that can be found

Who said buy a whole machine!?
Its like, $10 for a pound of gumballs.

I always recommend checking out Meetup.com, there are literally dozens of events going on depending on your interests. I think the best thing you can do is to fight any urge to shut yourself in. If you have the time get out there as much as possible even if you don't feel like it.
Just a heads up on two local conditions. First the weather, this is probably the shittiest month for Boston, March is no picnic either. The city will really start coming alive toward the end of April and is a completely different place in the summer and is great right through November. Second, I have heard from my California friends and family that Bostonians are a little less warm and welcoming than people out there are, so it may take a little more effort upfront. On the plus side, they have also said that people here are a bit more sincere and tend to be a bit more loyal. Anyway, welcome to town best of luck while you are here.
Do you like board games? There are a bunch of meet ups at Knight Moves, board game stores, online through Meetup.com, etc. It's a better way to get to know people than randomly going to a bar by yourself, I would think. I don't know about the suburbs but I'm sure you could find people in Somerville/Cambridge.
Excellent! Welcome to town, where did you move from?
By the way, I'm taking the train in but if you drive I believe that the concierge parking is very reasonable. I think it was around $15-$20. If you take the T though its quite literally across the street from the T Station. You get out, walk across the street and tada.
You can't ask for it to get easier than this.
Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to get your hopes up - Jackson isn't going to be there. But here is a link to the event on Fandango: http://www.fandango.com/lordoftheringstrilogymarathon_160268/movieoverview?date=12/8/2012
