Why is nobody talking about biochar? Legitimately, we could become carbon negative THIS YEAR and get back down to 350 ppm in a few decades if this was done at scale with organic waste streams. https://podcasts.google.com?feed=aHR0cDovL3JldmVyc2luZ2NsaW1hdGVjaGFuZ2UubGlic3luLmNvbS9yc3M&episode=ZDZiZTE0NjE4ODUyNDU4N2JjN2FhNWU3NDFlMDVkMGY
Thank you for this. I would add that collective action and government action can do tremendous things in short amounts of time. To anyone feeling down, read up on the history of the Dust Bowl, the New Deal, and how America mobilized for WW2. We weren't prepared for any of those problems/programs, but we pulled it off. Here's a some recommended reading:
Short: Where Our New World Begins, in this month's Harpers, offers up a vivid picture of what the Dust Bowl was like, and how the New Deal stepped in to transform the country.
Long: Destructive Creation, by Mark Wilson, about how the US government went gangbusters to create the raw materials and machinery needed to fight WW2.
What I'm trying to say: this may be first time that Americans my age have faced this type of existential despair, but it's certainly not the first time that generations have stared down calamity. I'd argue going as far back as the Civil War is instructive: an entire economy was based on slavery, things seemed impossible to change, and yet a small group of abolitionists agitated for years until finally the reckoning came.
This is the cycle of history, I'm glad to be in it with you all because I know we'll change this world for the better.
I know that I used to buy lots of plastic water bottles because of sensory issues, I didn’t like most reusable water bottles because they were too different from the plastic bottles I used. Perhaps by offering a reusable alternative that is also really close in style and feel to plastic water bottles might help. These are the ones I got and I find that they feel close enough that I don’t have any sensory issues with them: Copco Hydra Reusable Tritan Water Bottle with Spill Resistant Lid and Non-Slip Sleeve, 16.9-Ounce, 2 Pack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LZZ7MJE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_PxZmFb9ZCT6C7
The big concern I've got right now is that last week's Ezra Klein column has gotten a lot of people reading How to Blow Up a Pipeline, and thinking about whether continued strategic nonviolence is the right course of action. There are enough activists that it's fairly likely that some are going to give up on nonviolence.
I recommend switching your search engine to ecosia, because it works almost as well as other search engines, and it uses 80% of it's profits to plant trees
From 2015 https://weather.com/science/nature/news/fish-consumption-shortage-worries
“Humans are eating fish at such a rapid rate that there might not be any left in our oceans by 2050, according to one estimate recently released by the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future.”
From 2014: “In just a few short years, the world’s oceans will empty of fish. While that dire prophecy may seem a little alarmist, the scariest thing about it is that it is backed up with good ol’ science fact. It was published in Science, a publication that, if nothing else, does not publish bullshit. Cue terror in the streets.”
Stop acting as if I’m thick skulled for speaking what is in our future based off of countless studies and facts/statistics/observations
Copying this from another poster I got it from.
Use Ecosia.org as your search engine.
With every 45 searches, you're planting a tree.
I've been using it myself, and while it's a little bit limited compared to chrome it's not that bad. Definitely worth it for what happens in return.
Any little bit helps!
Plating trees is great! But I believe it is the fundamental disconnect between personal well-being and the health of the environment that has lead to the climate crisis. Stumbled on an app that tries to re-connect the urban yuppie with the global implications of climate change. It relies heavily on tree planting. Check it out!
Download the Earthrise app, its keeps track of environmental groups all over the world as well as scheduled events. I took a look on my end and it seems there are quite a few CCL chapters in India as well as a few Extinction Rebellion chapters.
Well it’s never too late to change professions! But if you feel like that’s not reasonable, you can always volunteer with your local conservation group to do anything from remove invasive species to pick up trash! You can plant native flowers in your garden bed to support pollinators, or even just spread the word about Ecosia! Every little bit helps
Leave that sub - block it, filter it, never go back. There is literally nothing beneficial to learn from them. Ignoring it does not make you a bad person, or a denier. It's a toxic community of people doing their best impression of this wojack to get upvotes.
Thank you for the kind words. In exciting news, we just sold the first 3333.33 tonnes of CO2 removal for $250k to Stripe. We'll be hosting an AMA with Stripe this coming Wednesday on r/askscience if you'd like to ask us anything.
Thank you for the nice comments! If you have any questions we'll be doing an AMA on r/askscience, this coming Wednesday. It will be done with Stripe, regarding their $250,000 purchase of 3333.33 tonnes of CO2 removal through our process.
Lol welcome to the world of press releases... Just seeing this post now. We just announced another big piece of this, which we could not reveal back then. We sold the first 3333.33 tonnes of CO2 removal for $250,000 to be done on this and other pilots, to the company Stripe. We'll be hosting an AMA with them and 3 other CDR projects this coming Wednesday, May 27th over at r/askscience
This is an excellent article and really important news to share. Thanks for posting!
If anyone is interested in learning more about exactly how much the oil & gas industry knew about their impact on climate change & how they actively controlled and changed the narrative on climate change in the 80s & 90s; check out the recent podcast by Stuff They Don’t Want You To Know.
The guys on this podcast are great and bring a lot of charisma and optimism while discussing some of the bleakest topics in our current society.
I agree with Falom. There isn't enough information.
Are they a clearing house that I can connect to my bank account like with privacy.com or are they a bank. If they are a bank what countries. Are they a fully featured bank or just a checking and savings account.
Depends heavily on your area (it’s also helpful to grow what will thrive in your local environment).
If you wish to support forestation in an easy way, consider donating to team trees. This is a partnership with youtube and the arbor day foundation to plant 20 million trees. You can double your donation for free by donating through youtube on certain videos like this one. Typically one dollar plants one tree, but by donating through youtube one dollar will effectively plant two trees.
Additionally, ecosia (the search engine) makes money like most search engines but donates their profits to forestation, so you may want to consider using them for your internet search needs.
FYI, this is CO and not CO2. They are very similar but different also.
Similar sources.
CO2 is more or less evenly distributed, but CO seems to be absorbed after a few days (I am not a scientist)

What's your background btw?
"The system also produces a sustainable source of organic biomass from which Arborea extracts nutritious food additives for plant-based food products."
It becomes food. Basically, this is kinda farming on rooftops.

Funny analogy there. What you consider a molehill would grow to a mountain if we made nuclear energy our main source of energy. What don't you get about what I'm saying? If a country the size of France, who reprocesses fuel, still produces 8,000 tons a year than a country the size of the US would create vastly more than that each year. Not only that it would require massive mining operations that would dwarf mining for renewables, especially knowing that things like solar panels can be made without toxic materials. We spend billions of dollars a year managing our 90,000+ tons of nuclear waste already and you want to add tnes of thousands of tons a year to that? That's absurd. And even beyond the cost/waste of nuclear power there is that chance that something terrible could happen. We're seeing remnants of Fukushima in California wine. When these things fuck up it's a global disaster. And you propose we add dozens or hundreds more? That's fucking stupid.
