The best areas in terms of travel connections are the ones around St.Pieters station (good highway and station connection) and around the 'Zuidpark' (good highway connection). Houses in areas such as the "Miljoenenkwartier" south of St.Pieters station or near the Muinkpark or Muinkkaai (west of the Zuidpark) will be bleeding expensive, but search a bit further near those vicinities and you might find a catch. The area north of St.pieters is also very good.
The historical center is expensive and very beautiful, but a bit unpractical if you have to commute a long distance every morning. You easily lose half an hour just to get out of the center during rush hour.
There are no real crime ridden areas in Gent, but in terms of nighttime noisiness from neighbours I do hear a lot of complaints from friends that live in Brugse Poort.
While it's true that there are far fewer places opened on sunday (and monday), you should still find plenty of pubs open if you stay in the (historical) center of the city.
If you plan on a stroll through the historical city I'd recommend you have a (few) beers at Café den Turk It's a typical old belgian pub, and despite their location not too touristy, have one of their 'Orval'
If I'm not mistaken "Aba Jour" (Oudburg) is opened the whole week, while not haute cuisine, among others they serve some decent typical Belgian dishes (stoverij)
I love board games, but never find the time to actually sit down and play them. Apps like Wordfeud make it possible to play Scrabble in different languages with people all over the world. You can chat while playing, so you might even find someone who would like to go to the Outpost and play a real game of Scrabble!
Wow, thanks a lot for the advice. We're staying at Aparthotel Castelnou, it's only for the one night on Saturday unfortunately though. My friends live in Brussels but I really wanted to check out Ghent. Anything especially cool near that hotel?
You might want to use the "Meetup" app as well:
Android
iOS
You can greate groups, events etc. You could greate a group/event once a week for some sort of fitness meetup, talk to people in your group about your interests, etc.
For example, recently I saw a group that wanted to meet up in café's and talk, trying to find the best beers or something...
