Series is not winding down, they're still creating new arcs that seem to be then hinting at newer arcs later on down the line. This series is definitely going to hit at least 100 chapters with the way things are going.
One thing I noticed though is that Okayado isn't really writing to push Darling onto a specific girl but instead just writes arcs that makes all the girls fall in love with him even more than they already did.
In the scene where right after Ms. Smith demanded he pick somebody to marry, he talks about his frustration to Suu. She suggests that he marries them all but he says that he would if he could but that it just isn't allowed.
That's why if the series has to have a single ending it looks like the harem ending is the ultimate conclusion.

Also (ignoring the fact that you're probably right) from a realistic perspective: Most people's choice would probably be decided based on what happened in the farm chapters where Rachnera was the only one who even bothered trying to help him out and the fact that she's the most sane and mature of all the girls.
She's also the only one who hasn't harmed him in any way, where as all the other girls have put him on the brink of death (besides Lala for obvious reasons). Okayado has also stated that he knows Rachnera is the most favorite character of them all from his polls, but idk if that will amount to anything other than he understands what is fans are thinking.
From what I can find, the snake thing seems to be a more modern interpretation that ended up sticking. John Keats might have popularized it with his poem Lamia, but don't quote me on that.

The file that comes out, assuming you selected the proper start and endpoint, is technically ready for direct upload to Gfycat (15 seconds max).
I didn't pinpoint exactly my start and end points so I used Sony Vegas (another program, not free though) to trim it down further, since I am familiar with it and can be more precise. I then saved my file again with the same parameters as before and uploaded it to Gfycat.

Nope, you can remove it. You can use something like a 3M superfine sanding sponge (since it won't scratch the figure) or 95% rubbing/isopropyl alcohol (since that'll eat through the paint and not the plastic).
If you don't match the color perfectly on a large part of a piece, you can either soak it in the rubbing alcohol to get the paint off, or you can just spray over it with a gray or white primer. Tamiya and Vallejo have both.
