Regarding the asthma, in the book "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt", the author mentions not only the midnight cobblestone rides but also a young Teddy forcing down coffee and smoking cigars to open his lungs. while caffeine is a bronchodialator, I can't explain the cigar bit.

Considering how brittle his asthma appeared to be, it's surprising he lived as long as he did for the age he was born in.

Theodore Roosevelt was one of the greatest men that ever lived. Not only was he truly a man's man, but he was fiercely intelligent and highly educated. He wrote and read constantly, and lived a life full of thought, morals, and action to those ends.

His biography by Edmund Morris is one of the best three book series I've ever read, and I don't mean "for a biography". It is hands down riveting, and a look at what it is to live a life of conviction and passion.

The books are, in order, The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt, Colonel Roosevelt, and Theodore Rex. If you have even an inkling of interest into what kind of person TR was, these books are a must read.

Their exploits during WWII were detailed in hundreds of letters which were 'discovered' and compiled into a fascinating (to me, at least) book. If anyone's interested in WWII history stuff, it's worth checking out.

Moon is a fantastic movie BTW. It's pretty much just Sam Rockwell for 90 minutes and he kills it. Surprisingly emotion evoking for what appears on the surface to be a SciFi film. Definitely catch it if you haven't yet. It was on YouTube for some time but appears to have been pulled. Well, I really can't explain in detail because I don't have much time and it's a rather large topic to discuss but let this be a indication of what I'm trying to tell you:

• GDP per capita is way lower than the average wherever there were no serbs/croatian/slovenian people i.e. wherever the rest of the jugoslavian people lived.

• Unemployment level was significantly higher in regions where non serb/croat/slovenian people live in. Croatian highest unemployment level, ever, was 8.6%, Slovenian 4.8, Serbian 18.9.

While Montenegrian was never lower than 17.5, Bosnian 16.6, Kosovo 36.3, Macedonian 21.9 etc... note that a lot of the employed in Bosnia, Kosovo, Montenegro etc. were in fact employing Serbian/Croatian people because they had a significant population in those countries. So the true unemployment level of the non-Serb/Croat people is actually a lot higher.

I don't have time to go into further analysis, ethnic discrimination, education etc. This can be a sufficient indicator of what I mean by that some people had it great in Yugoslavia while a lot of the population had to bear the burden.

Well, they claim that "gruntle" meaning pleased is a recent meaning, based on the obvious confusion. I won't disagree with that. But read further in the definition's article:

If used with an object, the verb "flaunt" affects the object...says right in your link. Here, it's not the women who are "flaunting" themselves, but the law that is being "flaunted", meaning they'd be proudly and defiantly displaying the law itself.

Curiously the definition right under that seems to mean the exact opposite: "to ignore or treat with disdain". This seems to be the actual definition of "flout" but I think it's one of those cases where a word is misused so much that it just gets adapted into the language.

Sorry, but I feel like I should point out the sources mentioned here are off. If you mean Nitobe's Bushido: the Soul of Japan, it was written in the middle of the Meiji period (specifically, it was published in 1899), meaning no more samurai, and it's intention was to restructure the Japanese sensibility by giving them a role model, which Nitobe had seen in the British gentleman and the image of knights in England. It was and is a fiction. Propaganda, if you will.

The Art of War is from 5 century B.C. China. Japan had no influence at the time at all. Organised Japanese warriors, in the broadest sense possible, don't really emerge until the late Heian period around the 12th century. I haven't read the Art of War personally, but there's no logical way it refers to Japan unless that's been added in later editions.

You are right to point out that samurai have been romanticised like crazy though, and that they were mostly generals. The main style of fighting in the Sengoku period, which is probably what most people in this thread are thinking of when they think samurai, was to ride around until you found someone of equal rank and then fight them one-on-one. Terrible military strategy.

I didn't know other people watched Nowhere Man! Is it still available somewhere? The cool thing about that show was that the cerator/writer/exec producer, Larry Hertzog, was on Usenet all the time, so fans could ask him about the show, give input, etc. I talked (typed) with him a lot during the season it was on, and was fascinated by the inside stories he shared about how the network screwed with the show, forced him to change story lines and characters, and basically ruined it before it was cancelled.

The same thing happened with the excellent series "Millenium" with Lance Henriksen, which had an outstanding first season and then was deliberately dumbed down by the network in hope of finding a broader audience (which failed). The Millenium drama played out more in the press though; with Nowhere Man it was just Larry talking with the fans on Usenet each week.

Sadly, Hertzog died in 2008 at 56.

Actually I think most stores are selling it in 4 pound bags now in an attempt to keep prices the same, but give you less product, but I did find a 4 pound bag for $1.68 in winco about 3 days ago. Most of the popular polymers that we use now were around back then and they were affordable.

Nylon has been in use since the late 1930s, and most other popular polymers became popular in the '50s and '60s.

It wasn't some rare material- it was fairly common in skateboarding by the mid-late '70s. There's no special new polymer that they have now that they didn't have then. They used polyurethane, and we use polyurethane now.

That's unfortunate about your father. From what I could quickly find, General Roberts was promoted to Brigadier General in 1929. So that should give you at least a starting point. That leaves a relatively short window of about 8 years for you to focus on.
