I've for quite some time thought that the "ego" or "esoteric knowledge" thing was part of it and it may be but I'm reading Escaping the Rabbit Hole: How to Debunk Conspiracy Theories Using Facts, Logic, and Respect and the author points out that although there has been a study done on having special knowledge that the relationship between the need for this knowedge and conspiracy belief is very weak. However, one of the later chapters was really interesting. It outlines how this new love by the Christian right for Putin and Orban and authoritarians in former Soviet states has actually been planned ever since the fall of the Soviet Union.

Basically, the white Christian crowd has kind of given up on the United States and Western Europe because they feel that liberal democracies are just morally bankrupt...in other words they realize that they're the minority and hate it. Major figures in in Christian right-wing think tanks, though, immediately saw the fall of the USSR as an opportunity to expand the influence of Christian nationalism. That people who share their beliefs could be the ones to fill the power void in Eastern Europe. As a result, they've been having conferences there and supporting far-right candidates in former Soviet countries since at least the early 2000s.

It sounds kind of convoluted, what I didn't realize before this book, was that the white Evangelical crowd still has the concept of Christendom.

That's the kind of thing I think about hearing in a Middle Ages period piece.

For a possibly more accessible approach (without my having read your recommended book), there is Stephen Fry's (yes, that Stephen Fry) "Mythos."

The author uses the Rwandan Genocide as one example of how polarization like we see in the US now can easily lead to civil war and genocide, and the parallels between happened in Rwanda and also Bosnia are striking.

pseudoarchaeology generally means alternative theories about history. it can be done poorly e.g. ancient aliens where it's just wild drive-by speculation, or it can be supported by research and evidence. there are a lot of pretty wild threads to follow.

like consider that anatomoically modern humans have been around for 300,000 years with the exact same mental capabilities as us. the currently accepted timeline has humans dicking around doing nothing more complex than hunting/gathering for 290,000 years, and then we went from cavemen to space exploration, 5G wireless, and cryptocurrency in 10,000 years. mix in evidence that the pyramids are WAY older than generally accepted and you've got some fun stuff to expore.

I would suggest not trying to win an argument using rationality. You'll just get frustrated. I think the approach outlined in Mick West's book is the best you can do. What I got out of it (and I'm sure this is a pretty pale summary) is the following, and it might be mixed with other suggestions I've heard:

• Listen to them to find the specifics of their beliefs and where they draw the line. For instance, they may not believe that JFK Jr is going to be Trump's vice president.
• Introduce them to new information. For instance, point out that you believe that QAnon has hindered the fight against human traficking, and why you believe it.
• Walk away without any agreement and let them digest. You can only make slow progress if you make any at all.
• Ask "what would convince you that XYZ is incorrect." Then work with that.

It’s funny that Zechariah Sitchin’s the 12th Planet is now being adopted by the Qs. I read those books in the early/mid 90s and thought it was a fun sci-fi romp paraded as ALT-TRUTH. Although, that makes sense why the Qs would embrace it.

Usually, the narrative is that Tiers 1 to 3 (basically: very large state and institutional investors) already have had the vast amounts of Iraqi dinars they owned exchanged at the new rate, all in total secrecy. Sometimes Tier 4A (large private investors or syndicates) is claimed to also already have been paid. Tier 4B (small individual investors) is the only group which actually exists: they're the idiots who fell for the scam, forever waiting for the notifications which will always arrive next week. Or at the latest, the week after that.

Somebody even used "Tier 4B" as a book title:

People are just afraid of realizing their religion is just as bunk as the others they don’t believe in. Most of them don’t even know the foundations nor dynamics of their religion. A lot of religious texts are thinly veiled polemics about whatever current day figure or group or culture they are raking against. This shit with Q would fit right in with the existing bible. Revalation was the creative writings of people feeling the weight of a society during. That’s all that was and that’s all this Q stuff is. I would like to suggest the book “Behind the myths: foundations of Judaism, Christianity and Islam by John Pickard . It is an excellent book and provides a materialist analysis of historical and social basis for these religions.
