While agree that the scenario you describe is pedantic likely to bother people, I've witnessed many people react extremely badly in countless situations nothing like that.
For example, there's a great book about the history of name changes in the US called, "A Rosenberg by Any Other Name," and a major part of the book is dispelling and explaining the origins of the myth that Ellis Island employees forced people to change their names upon arriving in the US. The book is full of evidence that didn't happen and explanations for why the myth became common but, when I saw the author speak years ago, the Q&A was full of people who were livid and shouting insults at the poor author because they were sure, without any evidence, that she was wrong.

We have a really hard time separating law from traditional Christian hegemonic values (i.e., that suicide is a sin). In medicine, the ultimate rule is to "do no harm", but what if existing is undignified, painful, and causes suffering? This is a great reason to justify a humane death. The right to live and right to die according to one's wishes is a staple of modern healthcare - that's why we have advance directives and choices in our care. To state that dying should only be "natural" devalues modern medicine too - many people would die if it wasn't for medical interventions, but if medical interventions are not sufficient, they should be granted their wish.
