In the Japanese version they give you 3 hit points but that was scrapped from the American version because renting games was legal and they didn't want you to beat it over the weekend and not buy the full game.
MrNemesis hacked the English rom to include the the extra hit points, you can download the patch here. It's the version I play on my hacked Sega Genesis Mini, I have no problem admitting the original is a bit too much for me and my limited play time given that it's a contender for hardest game on a system known for hard games.
You can even find it in cartridge form thanks to reproductions.
I personally like the 8Bitdo M30 2.4G Wireless Gamepad. It has extra shoulder buttons, it's wireless, feels great and I cannot detect any noticeable lag while playing. The only con is updating the firmware, which can be a little tricky.
That you have to register to even view the thread on Assembler Games is a pain in the ass. Here's a thread on another forum where the guy who released the prototype discusses it.
EDIT - Here is a link to the fixed-up ROM image. Don't expect much. It's just a title screen and some graphics in a room, little else. http://www.filedropper.com/lufia
I dug through the search results to pull out a couple that might be helpful.
Here's an amazon post for one (that's no longer available) but it has a several answered questions and reviews.
This video is a review/breakdown of it, almost 30 minutes, with some gameplay examples and such.
Basically, it runs any Genesis game except Virtua Racing. And it can emulate Master System games on your Genesis as well. (I don't know if that's on the card or through software, though.)
Seems to be fine, as a product in general. But like I said, it's still a second-hand electronic product.
That is a good thought, I just looked into it a little bit - the cardboard boxes for 32x are two pieces (an insert and an outer sleeve) each made from one piece of cardboard. I couldn't easily find a template for the insert, but am pretty confident I could flatten out and trace a discarded case to make my own template. I might give that a try.
As for sega CD I do have most of mine in normal jewlcases with reprinted covers, but I still have a lot of my old inserts and manuals, and obvs they dont fit neatly in a normal jewlcase. Something about those big cases captivated my imagination when I was little too. Even though they didn't catch on they felt like the future at the time.
Incidentally here is the article talking about new seca CD jewlcases I mentioned https://kotaku.com/two-guys-making-new-sega-cd-jewel-cases-are-in-an-accid-1825364528
Check out whosampled.com. They indeed sampled from Eternal Champions. Sega had some nice tunes. Stranger in Moscow for instance.
More than likely it’s because your TV cannot handle the analog signal, so you’ll need a way to upscale the image to HDMI. There are a number of options available. If you want something quick and cheap until you can afford a better option I suggest the HD Genesis cables from hyperkin. These are the cables that I’m currently using until I can get my hands on a Rad 2X cable.
Hyperkin HDTV Cable for Genesis https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RW8R3QF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_0Y9XSYGXE3W6EB7D0J7G
There are some cheap hdmi conversion boxes that are nicer than I expected. I think it's this one I've been using on my MSX computer. Obviously it's not perfect, but it does work surprisingly well. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TSMXL6K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glc_fabc_CY5XNAM2RK5TNXCN8NV3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Buy one of the first one, and the picture will be better. The second one is an RF connection. They always look like crap.
Be sure to get a model 2 AV cable, like this. The Model 1 cables have a different plug that won't fit your console.
The guys who make the HD Retrovision cables did some testing on some inexpensive UL rated power supplies and suggested this one from Amazon, which you can add adapters to to use with tons of different consoles.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001BRKFII
I have it and it works great with my Genesis and Super Famicom. They list the adapters you need here:
http://www.hdretrovision.com/vote3rdparty
Everything I needed was less than $20 and it seems like a very reliable power supply.
All it does is give the items their own buttons. As far as attacks, all you need it 3 buttons. But speaking of controllers. You can get a hyperkin 6 button controller for 9 bucks on amazon and it’s a great controller
Hyperkin "GN6" Premium Controller for Genesis https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HM3QAWK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_M.lNAbQ0PEQJ3
It's a port for a Genesis Model 1 AV cable.
You can use something like this to get stereo sound from the front headphone jack.
I used one of these. Not this specific component but I'm pretty sure it's identical. I just removed one from an old kids toy I dug up and soldered it in and it worked flawlessly.
This seems to be an exact aftermarket replacement but you could probably just use one similar to the one I used. Either way both will work for sure.
I'd try a new cable. Free returns, so you're not out anything if it's not that.

This is what I'd plug it into
No thats one of the minis that won’t play carts. look at this and see what you think.
New, no i don't think so
Old, yes but probably not the kind of wireless you are hoping for (they are infrared wireless)

I see Amazon is selling the Sega Genesis Mini 2. Have no idea if that’s going to be the box for the NA release. Last I heard there isn’t one. Since it’s coming from Amazon JP.
What a great game. I played POF first before the original and still feel POF is superior. I actually beat it again a couple years ago, still very satisfying.
Also, they have the switch game on sale today here
OEM power supplies are not recommended because A) you'll need two of them (one for each the console & CD), and B) they're not voltage regulated, which puts a bit more strain on your system. The Sega genesis model 2 and 32x use a center-positive "yellow tip" power supply, and the Sega CD & Sega genesis model 1 use a center-negative "black tip" power supply, but all run at the same voltage, so you can get a single plug that splits multiple ways to power all devices.
This one has multiple tips to feed both your genesis and CD, and even a 32x should you get one:
https://www.amazon.com/SEGA-Tower-Power-Cable-Adapter-Genesis/dp/B08PCFT8SZ
I already have the blue one from Colombus circle, but I kind of want this because it looks cool all in white.
Yeah it won't be an exact 1:1 match with the original, but using some wire you can connect the pins to the motherboard. I repaired the controller ports on a model 1 not too far back, the pins are just metal pins bent 90 degrees to solder into pads the motherboard, there's nothing fancy about the connection that you need to use a perfectly matching set. Any DB-9 type connection should work fine as long as you match the right pins to the right holes on the motherboard.
Depending if the game has or hasn't region lock. I've bought several PAL Mega Drive games knowing this, costing significantly less than its NTSC counterparts. Check here. I also have bought several compilations not available in SEGA Genesis, e. g. the Classic Collection, that has Altered Beast, Gunstar Heroes, Alex Kidd and Flicky. Look for it in eBay :)
A really shitty RF connection. Here's your solution.
Just buy that or one like it. You don't need some special cable to plug into your Genesis, just an adapter. That'll take the dual-RCA jack stereo output from the Genesis and turn it into a mono RCA jack output. I use an adapter like that myself when I need to and it works just fine.
I'd recommend these 6 button USB controllers from Retro-Bit. https://www.amazon.com/Retro-Bit-Official-Controller-8-Button-Raspberry/dp/B07P37ZGTF/ref=sr\_1\_5?crid=1NW6BD43759T4&keywords=sega+genesis+6+button+controller&qid=1654649645&s=electronics&sprefix=sega+genesis+%2Celectronics%2C159&...
I just bought a generic case with pluckable foam insert and made a correctly sized divot for it.
Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0827L8P2M/ref=ppx\_yo\_dt\_b\_search\_asin\_title?ie=UTF8&th=1
I use a two-prong driver bit to open these. You gotta have the right leverage in two of those slots but it works fine.
I got a knock-off on Amazon years ago. It was $40 or so and I don't think it has a save feature. Not a big deal for me since I don't play RPG's. It's nice though, came with a large enough SD card that I was able to load the 32X cart library on with room to spare. It came preloaded with the Master System and Genesis library, so that was nice. It also lets me change the BIOS for my Sega CD, which is useful. I really can't say enough good things about them, as you might be able to tell.
I didn’t personally try it, but there are products out there to polish plastic. Most of them are used on car headlight covers. I bought this but never tried it. You can also look for replacement cases for parts.

Not sure if the Intec one does but this 8bitdo Genesis Bluetooth adapter definitely does. Link
FYI, this adapter can be updated to support using the NSO Genesis controller on real Genesis hardware. Same goes with their N64 adapter and the NSO N64 controller. Have them both and they work with no issues!

I was extremely impressed with how well they scaled the picture from my Genesis with this TV. Can easily read the text on the screen, which sometimes can be difficult with the larger screens due to the stretching and not being able to change the aspect ratio. This one is great though, haven't had any problems running my genesis games on it. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08DHDS4T3/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_N702WGS2QTFVPZH8VMNZ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Need something like this in order to use the RF adapter. The RF adapter uses a standard US coax connector, this TV does not.
If your willing to fork over the cash for a video upscailer check out the Ossicles it accepts both SCART and component cables,

Hyperkin's 6 button controller from a few years ago is quality.
I'll also vouch for 8bitdo's wireless controller. Feels like what the Saturn S controller would have evolved into to me.
these work great for me:

the original controllers were already bad back then ;)
While not quite a Gameboy & Oracle of Ages, there is the Legend of Zelda Game & Watch. You could likely find it in stores relatively easily or online in time for Christmas. Covers 3 Zelda games and it's a pretty cool little handheld.
Granted, the 2 NES games can be pretty cryptic and involve random exploring/experimenting, so it may not keep interest going if he's accustomed to modern gaming.
On the other hand, maybe it'll be a big hit for him and you could jump start an interest & appreciation for retro gaming 🤔.
I don't have an extra, but I'm using this one with my Genesis 2. Less than $8, with Prime shipping if you have that, and much smaller than the original adapter. Also works with Game Gear.

Im going to try some of this stuff called DeoxIT spray
I havnt tried it yet. Im unsure if I disassemble the genesis before spraying the slider.
The one with the 2 triggers and mode button. I think it's marketed as the 8 button.

I have have the original Genesis port ones that's great, but not relevant to what you want.
I have one to but I recommend you to buy the SEGA Genesis AtGames Portable Gameplayer & a SD Card to Install Neto Bootloader. You might find cheaper ones on Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, Ebay, Wish, Mercari, Walmart (Depending), GameStop (Depending), and Family Dollar (Depending, also this is where I first brought it from) depending on the Seller's price (Example: I got paid mine's for $25)
https://www.amazon.com/Genesis-AtGames-Ultimate-Portable-electronic-games/dp/B00NMC6R9G
From what I've heard the poundland converters use composite to hdmi inside, while this one uses RGB to HDMI. I think it looks great, and plenty sharp. Here's the one I used, and it is definitely a cut above the poundland stuff, maybe not as good as the mClassic: https://www.amazon.com/Genesis-Original-Master-System-Console/dp/B07Z5W7QS7/ref=sr\_1\_7?dchild=1&keywords=levelhike+sega&qid=1633399817&sr=8-7
This is where I got it from:https://www.amazon.com/Genesis-Nintendo-TurboGrafx-Original-Replacement-cord/dp/B082TXYS1C/ref=sr_1_3?crid
It matches the exact specs the Genesis requires other than the fact that it outputs 5 amps. Which isn't a problem.
If it is a repro it is a pretty good one as usually they don't take the time get a real Sega cart without the notch on the side. 2 years ago a PAL Mega Drive copy of Alisia Dragoon was worth $25-$30 so it wasn't particularly valuable at the time. Based on the interaction with the seller over the manual I'd say it is probably a repro but the best way to know for sure is just get bite the bullet on the security bits and open it up. They aren't expensive and you can probably find the 3.8 bit for cheaper by itself if desired. You'll be glad knowing for sure and it actually helps when you sell legit copies if you can provide board shots.
this wasn't too bad.
If you want to spend $200, Analogue Pocket is what you want.
There’s a whole community built around the correct way to connect a Genesis to a modern TV. Using the oem rf or composite cable is definitely one of the worse ways to do it. I use https://www.amazon.com/HD-Link-Cable-Sega-Genesis-System/dp/B07JYJXZGR/ref=asc_df_B07JYJXZGR, which will not satisfy purists, but I find pretty good
I have a Model 2 that should be coming soon and I was wondering if these (one two) would allow me to power the system with the power bank? Then I would just get a small TV/monitor with a/v input and have a "portable" Genesis but not handheld. (I may try to integrate the controller into the system so I could just hold the system and set the monitor in my lap or on a table. I should be able to wire the controller internally to the back of the player 1 controller port and still have external access, right?)
That adapter is for use with the HD Retrovision cable. If you just want a composite video cable for your model 1 Genesis, just get a model 1 Genesis composite video cable.
what are you using to connect it to the TV? RF or AV cables? In any case here is a cheap option to get good video quality.

I'm not sure what all is in it but it really does work well.
There’s a retro store around me that does excellent work with repairs and mods. They did it for me and referred to some mod instructions they found online. But they did the work and wiring for me, cracking open the rechargeable battery case, wiring the batteries cores, and putting it all back together. You charge the pack with the same power supply as the Nomad since the rechargeable battery pack had an AC input, but you never charge and play at the same time. The batteries they had me get are these on Amazon. I believe they only needed two batteries to get the proper power. If you do this mod, good luck getting it all to work! It makes the Nomad even better in 2019 having a longer charge then it ever could have in the 90’s.

You can order $20 retrobit USB controllers on Amazon. They come in a box closely modeled after the original 6-button box, which is nice.
I haven't used the 3-button pads with my Genesis Mini; I went straight to the 6-button retrobit. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07P37ZGTF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_tpKHDbWZX8J5J
Where are you located?
They're $20 on Amazon shipped w/ Prime.
Hi, if you want a cheap Genesis you put cartridges into get one of these.
https://www.amazon.com/Minigen-Video-Entertainment-System-Sega-Genesis/dp/B0735Z2941/
It's a cheap clone but it is still better than any AtGames console. There is also an "HD" version if you want one that will connect to a modern TV.
If you want a console with games bundled wait for Sega's mini classic. It has a better selection of good games than any AtGames and the emulation is better too.
Hyperkin just came out with an HDMI cable for Genesis. I got one last week and it looks awesome with my model two. I don't know how it works with a model one though. It does come with an adapter for the model one but the reviews I've read in regards to that system are mixed.
(Razzle) Yeah I had never even heard of this game until Dazzle brought it up in conversation. I had a genesis too, weird. I’m digging it so far and I know Dazzle is enjoying reliving his wonder years. I believe the Genesis collection for Switch went on sale right after we recorded this on Amazon.
Okay great. So go to Amazon and type in Sega Genesis Model 2 AV cable and buy one of those.
If you don't want to choose one. Here is the one I would choose.
>Finally, I hate that the CDX doesn't have standard controller port spacing. I like to use the Sega-brand wireless controllers, but they are incompatible with the CDX due to their receiver's form factor.
A couple of these could help with that. It wouldn't be pretty though.
