For old times' sake, here's the video of when we literally made him cry. He's long since taken it down from YouTube, so it's a good thing I saved a copy.
Oh my brd the HN comments: > To the author: You're right, it's unacceptable but you know how to fix it? You say something at the point in which it occurs. Nip it in the bud. Running off to write yet another gender-division-in-the-tech-world blog which will be read, primarily, by the sort of folk who already agree with you isn't going to make nearly as much of a difference as taking care of issues promptly. After doing so, blog about what happened and the resulting reaction. That's the sort of story that'll spread like wildfire.
.
> Not to defend the men in this story but I imagine they are like many guys in tech-single and lonely, and see these sorts of meet-ups as an opportunity to meet women with similar interests. Specifically the line "Oh ok cool, so if we start dating I can use the app with you!" seems to suggest this objective.
> I think a lot of their statements are said to provoke a reaction from women in a "flirty" manner, not because these men are actually misogynistic. Their well-intentioned flirtatious remarks are being interpreted as sexist by women attending these events, likely because these men are inexperienced with women and unsure how to relate to them.
I'm curious as to why I would want to go to RedditU rather than better, proven offerings like Khan Academy or even wait for MIT&Harvard to fully spool up EDx or even the iTunes U course materials that are available?
Why not even partner with these institutions? Why would I want to learn from some schmuck on Reddit instead of going to these other places?
There was a long ass Metafilter post that touched on this and on the tidal wave of misogyny that Anita Sarkeesian just recently faced.
On the double standard at play here on user noted that of all the games they could think of that involved male protagonists in prison settings (where the statistics for rape are reversed), not one seemed to feel the need to make that a plot point.
It's hardly the worst thing I've heard, but yes, that sure looks transphobic to me. First of all, he's equating "lots of hormones" with "transgender", as if trans people have hormone levels far higher than cis people. Secondly, much of the discussion about pink slime is highlighting how artificial it is, so the joke supports ideas about trans people being artificial. Lastly, given how badly trans people are viewed by much of society, and given how much ignorance cis people have about us, I don't think that a joke comparing us to something that's being viewed so negatively is appropriate no matter how well it's done.
This isn't the first time Colbert has made a transphobic joke, by the way. Not by a long shot.
Oh wow I was just looking for more examples and I came across this awful clip. Ugh. Yeah Colbert is pretty damn transphobic, and from the sound of the laughter his audience is worse. I don't know why so many people here are defending him.
Jewish identity is incredibly complex, though. It's not a "race" (which is fucking defined completely arbitrarily in every context, anyway... in reality there are ethnicities, not races, and ethnicities don't mean all that much), it's not just a religion, etc. For example, I'm an agnostic atheist but I still consider myself Jewish. (I actually consider myself a Humanistic Jew.)
People are fucking stupid. There's so much goddamn nuance in the world, and people just ignore it.
What's kind of funny is that this is so over the top, even most of the comments on reverse-discrimination-do-real Hacker News are disagreeing with him: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4648625
Also it only has 27 upvotes, which is exceptionally low for something on HN.
>Minato Sahashi is extremely intelligent, yet due to his inability to cope under pressure has failed the college entrance exam twice. As a result he has been branded an idiot and loser by many. One Day after talking to his yet again disappointed mother he comes into contact with a girl named Musubi who was under attack. The girl runs but takes him with her and soon finds that Minato, while unknown to him, is an Ashikabi, one of the mysterious set of masters that have the genetic trait that can become partners with some of the 108 cute girls, buxom women, and bishōnen called "Sekirei". The reason for the partnership allows the Sekirei to use all their power to win in the competition held by the mysterious MBI corporation.
I think that really kicked off with Hurlbert and Ling's Biological components of sex differences in color preference (2007), in which the authors seem to me to have squinted hard at their data to prove that women really do have a preference for pink, although they are forced to admit that women and men alike generally prefer blue. It's a weird article.
HN had another mini-meltdown about Eich today, like it does every time a post about Mozilla comes up: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7587935 . https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7588065 was especially hilarious, and it was the top voted comment for a long time.
If anyone is interested, there was a fucking fantastic thread over on Metafilter awhile ago about this piece. There are a few douchey sexists in the thread as usual, but also lots and lots of awesome discussion and wonderful comments.
I thought it was interesting to see on a different HN thread complaining about the same speaker, the creator of the 'citation needed' tag responds to someone using it to make an anti-feminist argument. It must be fun to be able to call people out on that.
1) Check the legality of your mace. You can only buy it in the city from an authorized dealer. Some quick and dirty google information here and here
2) Any kind of self-defense weapon is illegal in nyc which of course disadvantages the weak or infirm. Knives over 5in in length are a complete no-no and you will likely either get pinched for carrying or when you defend yourself you'll also be up on charges. Even zip batons and tazers are right out.
3) Never carry a weapon you are unfamiliar with wielding properly. Especially a knife. In the hands of even a moderately clued person a knife is an extremely dangerous weapon to defend against. In the hands of someone who is not familiar with wielding it and hasn't at least done a little practice it is merely a danger to the wielder. You knife will become my knife and then you're pretty much fucked.
Not quite it but I did post something similar here
I'm considering posting another one that pertains on drawn porn when I survive my 3 midterm + 5 page essay hell week.
A taste of the dude's personality.
The bros at Hacker News have lots of sympathy... for Moghadam.
Beep-boop substantiating claims.

Cow lives in shit.
Shit gets on hide.
Shitty cow is butchered.
Shit gets in meat.
Bacteria in shit makes people sick.
Also, while this is only tangential, let's not forget the contamination that this shit living causes on dairy farms.
>forcefed unhealthy food with antibiotics every day
Cows eat antibiotics.
Bacteria living in cows develop antibiotic resistance.
Antibiotic resistant bacteria spreads.
Duke Nukem Forever has a 54 metacritic rating and a 48.52 on gamerankings.
Everyone called out Duke Nukem Forever for being a horrible piece of shit.
Another article comment thread, 500+ comments, probably about to be kicked off the front page for not enough upvotes though.
Edit: Holy brd, 950 comments. Barely keeping enough upvotes to not get killed.
