US-only, but /u/LetKalleLift found that you can buy individual episodes, or the entire season in advance for just $.99, of "The Strongest Man in History." Link here and thanks Kalle!
EDIT: Price has gone up....to $1.99 for the season.
Worked up to ~90% doubles on deadlift and ~90% singles on push press, both of which felt pretty good.
Biggest win of the week though came due to craigslist: bought a pair of old school York 100 lb plates for 30 cents/lb. Total insanity.
I did the NC Strength Challenge and NC Super Total (Saturday and Sunday) this weekend. I weighed in at 174.8, but there were only two 175ers so we got combined with the <200 class. I didn't get last place, which is an improvement from my last adventure in a combined class. He events were 225 lbs axle clean and jerk for reps, farmer's walk ladder, car deadlift, yoke and tire flip medley, and stone over bar (it actually ended up being a 285 stone instead of a 275 stone). Video of most of the events.
The NC Super Total was snatch, clean and jerk, squat, strict overhead press, and deadlift. I ended up with the highest total of my weight class (<187) at like 1595, but the contest was scored by points like strongman, so even though I took first in the squat (435), strict OHP (215), and deadlift (585), I took dead last in both Oly portions and ended up in 2nd place overall. I did get video of the deadlift. This was something like a 30 lbs PR without straps (I've done 600 with straps).
Pretty much every part of my body hurts after two days of competition, and my main goal is to get out of bed in a timely manner tomorrow morning. I'm thinking about joining a Crossfit gym and learning Oly lifting since those fuckers keep beating me at strongman.
Didn't get a lot of training done due to the holiday, but yesterday I built a lifting platform. By next weekend I'll have my home gym ~70% complete, and will be able to train everyday at home. Very excited about that.
You can use a proxy extension for Chrome like hola! (free), or you can use a VPN like hidemyass/ipvanish (they cost $10 a month though) in order to access the site as if you're from a different country.
Hit an incline bench PR of 6x225lbs and a strict press PR of 6x185lbs.
First time going heavy on the axle since last year, and I hit the comp weight (110kg/242lbs) for a few easy speedy singles. Overhead medley at my next comp should be fun. Next weekend I'm going to the gym where the comp is being run to use some of the actual equipment.
Also went to the Australian Arnold, got to meet a bunch of the pros and got to bear witness to Eddie Hall's 462.
Here is the Excel file for the full scores given from 2008 to today. It also contains all WSM results for the heats during these years, which can be interesting for archive purposes. http://www.filedropper.com/adjustedwsmheatresults

I work in the construction industry and always ate my meals cold too.
That thing is fucking amazing. Please check it out.
NAS Nationals events just got released, and event 2 is a Husafell carry. Would training front carries with a sandbag have enough carryover or would it be worth the $199 to add one to the home gym?
Tried to find a list of the events and weights, couldn't so here goes, please let me know if you know the weights and I'll edit them in.

In addition to powerlifting/strongman, I'm also an avid hiker. In prepping for a backpacking trip coming up, I've been reading a lot from "uphill athlete" and "training for the new alpinism" (one of the authors is on the uphill athlete site). Another endurance coah, Phil Maffetone is very similar. They are all big fans of long slow cardio based around a measurement of aerobic threshold.
Basically, they argue that's how you improve your aerobic system and that most of us exercise at too high of an intensity. I've not done it long enough to notice big improvements myself, but I can't deny it's also healthy, so that's a perk.
I started thinking about it b/c I could keep up with my wife hiking, albeit with a heart rate that was in the 150's while hers was in the 120's. I was strong, I could move weight quickly, I could push myself hard, etc., but boy was my heart rate up there.

*edit: +1 on seeing a doc to make sure there's not an underlying condition
I'm the stereotype you described (decent PLer considering a future strongman contest, but started with atlas stones to train for natural stones). I'm using relatively mild tack cloth and spray to offset the smoother surface/shape of atlas stones versus natural - same advice on using real tacky instead?
For the axle I use WOW straps. For barbell deadlifts I just use Rip Toned straps that I got off amazon for less than $10. I like these better than elite fts or Cerberus straps that I have.
I used this app made by u/crispypretzel. I'd hit a heavy 3 on week 1, then use the app to figure out a 9.5 rpe double for week 2 then use that number to find an rpe 9.5 single for week 3.
I do. "Too much", my foot.
If you really wanna level up your beard, go after something like this. Makes a world of difference
You may already know but I just started watching this tonight and netflix and searched for anything on reddit about it. Born Strong on Netflix now.
Great, I'm gonna have to check under my bed for you as well now!
Some feedback though, I think it's all in your leg drive. I can't really tell from this angle so if you can, take video side on and then directly in front. It looks like your feet are correctly placed and turned slightly out again correctly. But what I can't tell is if your knees track over your toes with a slight outward angle but instead track directly forward. Or they might be tracking out correctly but as you do the push your knees track inwards showing some knee valgus. The result is that you don't have a full drive on the push press which it why the momentum bottoms out halfway up.
IF it is knee valgus then it suggests a weak medial glute which is common because it's not targeted heavily enough using just squats or typical squat assistance.
Try downloading the WL Analysis app and film yourself directly from the side. You can look at the velocity of the bar through the tracking to see where the drive breaks down.
Do take this with a pinch of salt as it's an absolutely obscene amount of weight to be push pressing so really the advice you need is starting to fall into the elite category. You may benefit from cross training some explosive training either from a weightlifting program or even jump training. Fuck knows, but you might find you're able to train a more explosive push press by cross training.
Either way, good luck and make sure you get back to the swamp before sun down you monster!
If only automated laser-based timing wouldn't be so darn expensive
(seriously, this one is 500 bucks, that's stupid cheap)
it's not translated to english yet:

The author is Alexander Pürzel (former european champion in the deadlift), the title translates to "squat bench deadlift - with functional movement analysis to peak performance"
He's currently getting his PhD analyzing movement patterns in squat and deadlift (basically the topic of his book), so it's all evidence based. No bro-science.
He often speaks at events and local podcasts, and he did mention that he's working on getting the book translated.
(also his brother owns what they call "the best gym in the world", and it's a claim that might just be true)
If you have the budget, strap yoke: https://www.amazon.com/Spud-Inc-Swing-Set-Straps/dp/B072YLF3BY
Put them on an axle bar at ~50-75% comp weight and practice your stability. The comp yoke will feel like a joke.
so they're allowed straps - are they allowed to use hook-straps?
That could take out that factor :D
Just looked at the weather seems pretty isolated out there right now. Not going to get real questionable until closer to 5 pm according to weather.com. Now the reliability of that along with how the weather is around here (I live in Bradenton), you never know what could happen.
Also now on Itunes https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/strong-talk/id955105141 And Stitcher http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/kalle-beck/strong-talk?refid=stpr
If you guys could give the podcast a rating and review and subscribe it would really help so we can continue to do this!
Thanks
>I wish there was something like a shoulder sleeve :D
I'd go for the PVC pipe caps (2.5") instead of the test plug. Should be more secure, though the wingnut isn't there.

Had to ask. I use this at my home in my gym to weight random stuff. It’s worked ok so far and isn’t too expensive. If it’s a 12” log my guess is minimum 80lbs but could easily be double that, just depends
Goo Gone or baby oil and use a towel/rag (one you won't use for anything besides this now haha) and for the tough stuff, one of these - https://www.amazon.com/Scotch-Brite-Cleaning-Pads-Dobie-6-Pack/dp/B004RHSG6M/ref=psdc_15754811_t3_B00R6CG2Z2
If I have to do things afterwards before I can get a shower, I wear gloves and old clothes and sit on towels. Like after a competition and got few hours to the hotel haha
I will be trying this guy out this winter
Heat Storm HS-1500-PHX-WIFI Infrared Heater, Wifi Wall Mounted https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JXRWJ8D/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabc_krfYFbPJSA02Q
I also have some cheap $40-$50 electric heaters from Walmart I’ll help supplement with.
Each wheel is 45 lb, the axle is 44 lb. If I put the collars that came with the bar, it would be 135 lb.
For reference, the axle is another steal on Amazon for $159 and free shipping.
I didn't get any advice on using them. I'm not too worried about cracking. The weld beads look like they were laid by a professional, so if they don't hold, nothing will.
This has been good to me for a few years now.
I’ve never tried this, but in my head I’ve conjured up an idea. Find some rolling cable handles (like these) and strap them as far apart as you can on a pull up bar or in a rack or something and do wide grip hangs. Just an idea lol.
Great resources, thanks. A video algorithm took me to Bending Steel - any thoughts on the movie, technique/training-wise? The movie is as much about one particular guy/family and their demons as strength, although he's a PT and should maybe be a bit less magical about it all.
I got some 5 dollar tow straps from Amazon that worked really for me. Looks like they've gone up in price a bit, but still a good deal for two sets with a spare. Ymmv. I pulled 390x9 in my fist novice contest with them, and have had up to 460lbs with no slipping. I usually wear a large in gloves if that helps with sizing idea. I've got serious steel figure 8s too, and the axle straps were too long for me. I really like the regular serious steel for a 1 in. Bar.

I'm not experienced enough to give technique advice, but I do know a thing or two about grip. Here are some options that might be allowed in place of tacky:
Heard these work decently.
OFG Yoke kit, 2" Olympic Weightlifting Collars (Pair) with U hook for chain and Loading pin (Chain Yoke kit) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LYIOGWF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_8W8BAbZA7Q30B
This is what I use. It's a true 20kg, 2" axle. And it's cheaper than IM's. Not to take anything from IM. They're one of the best companies on the planet to do business with, but I like that the one below is 44 lb vs IM's 33 lb bar. It makes mathing weight easier.
Why do you need a second dumbbell?
I got a couple of these set screw collars that are awesome for keeping the weights in place. They use a 1/4 inch hex key which is mildly inconvenient.
I bought this for my gym a while back. It is surprisingly sturdy.
Okay, ya'll have me convinced to go with a proper Yoke. My question now is if anyone has an opinion on the One Fit Wonder yoke by Fringe Sports or the Valor Fitness yoke? As petty as it is, I would prefer to not buy from Rogue if there are other options.

Also, the reason your hands are ripping is because you aren't taking care of your callouses. You need to shave them down with a pumice stone regularly so they don't stick out from your palm so much. Some people use a metal callous shaver but be careful--it's easy to go overboard. Most people who train hard will eventually rip a callous but it shouldn't happen frequently.
I use Winnie's Rip Fix on the rare occasion I rip a callous open and moisturize my palms with it once or twice a week in the winter.
I bought some nordic lifting heavy duty wrist wraps the other day. 50% off. $20 total. Though they were on a flash sale at the time and actually got them for $13.
BTW, if you don't have one already, theracane
