There is literally a book that that has the Dena’ina names for areas all over Anchorage. To say that this city wasn’t “settled” is BS, people have always been here. Sh!t, there’s a plaque down at Ship Creek dedicated to a site that the Dena’ina used.

If I was you, I would subscribe to Anchorage Police Department's Nixle text messages. Their alert this morning was https://local.nixle.com/alert/5570599/?sub_id=1938817
Another good one to use is the mobile app waze. Wazers can drop pins notifying other wazers of cops, road hazards, accidents, traffic, etc.
Climate change is real. That said, December in Anchorage has a history of warming spells. The highest recorded F temperature for December in Anchorage (by decades ending in 7) has been as follows: * 1957: 39 * 1967: 46 * 1977: 37 * 1987: 39 * 1997: 37 * 2007: 44 * 2017 (so far): 44

Several people in the kefir sub (including myself) bought grains from THIS SELLER on Amazon. All of us are very happy, too. The grains are reasonably priced with 2,300+ great reviews.
It's worth a shot if you can't find grains locally.
The only true way to test them if they don't look bad is an ESR meter. This one will run $60 shipped.

Check out Groupon! They occasionally have deals on autostarts. The one I've linked to is for either a one way or a two way and it's a pretty good deal.
I got an autostart for my manual Subaru at Perfectionist (with a Groupon that's not available anymore :( ) and they were pretty good. I ended up having my hood pin crap out after a fews days but I brought my car back to them and they fixed it within an hour for no charge.
I mean slip on like these. I’m having a hard time finding something similar to that that’ll go to negative degrees and comes in a wide.
Johnny’s Girl by Kim Rich is a really good read gives some insight into local history sort of, through one person’s story of growing up here.
Barnett and Hartman’s Imagining Anchorage is one of the most recent and best books on our city’s history. It has tons of pictures, but is kind of pricey. https://www.amazon.com/Imagining-Anchorage-Americas-Northernmost-Metropolis/dp/1602233667 I suggest Title Wave for a cheaper used copy.
Katie Ringsmith’s Anchorage Remembers is my favorite short read: https://www.amazon.com/Anchorage-Remembers-Century-49-Writers/dp/0990742822
Elizabeth Towers did a book on the city too, but it’s kind of so so.
I can’t think of any decent documentaries unfortunately.
Best Alaskan horror I’ve ever read is Sean Schubert’s Alaskan Undead Apocalypse. It takes place in and around Anchorage and there are some places I can’t go without checking for zombies.
Here’s the Amazon link: https://www.amazon.com/Infection-Alaskan-Apocalypse-Sean-Schubert/dp/1618680161
It’s pretty awesome on Audible, too. Narrated by Daniel May from The Walking Dead. Freaking shivers!
Yeah, I got mine from Amazon years ago for the same reason.
Only one left in stock ! It is a race!
crime...... 'Homeless on homeless', domestic, and 'criminal on criminal' covers the vast majority of our crime rates (which compared with the nation are high).
sub-zero...... no (unless you talking celsius)
- a weather link for January 2021: https://www.wunderground.com/calendar/us/ak/anchorage/PANC/date/2021-1
- note that most days' highs were 25F+, and a few lows were below 10F
- as for the cold 'hurting/reducing' the homelessness... nope; they are a hardy bunch.

As in any city, there are areas to avoid. Avoid them and you'll be just fine.

Order $25 or more of qualifying stuff (which is a majority of things) and shipping is free. Kind of hard to beat.
Lag time is about 2-6 months so if you were taking it before, it's probably not your lapse in the holidays that has you down. Definitely keep taking them, but try including 30+ minutes of moderate exercise 3+ days a week, and get a happy light to use for 1-2 hours in the morning. Good deal on a 2-way Autostart at Best Buy, including installation.
Yeah I'm a single woman too and I've been walking around places outside alone I dunno most of my life? Lol that sounds weird, I mean when I was child I was allowed to go anywhere in my neighborhood on my own and nothing bad happened.
I'm 34 now. I lived in Denver for a few years and then came back home to Anchorage. I've also traveled all over the world. For me the only places that felt safer than Alaska were Sydney and Amsterdam, they have really low crime rates.
Common sense will keep you safe, stay off the bike trails at night. There's lots of homeless people.
What you should worry about more is the Alaskan wilderness. Visitors always underestimate the vastness of the Alaskan wild. Every year tourists gets lost in Alaska cause they went off trail hiking/camping on their own and didn't know what they were doing. And if you get lost in the Alaskan wilderness it's likely you will not be found. (Into the wild)
Never EVER go off trail, I don't. Unless you're some kinda expert guide with the navigating equipment it's a bad idea.
I would suggest a security building. Our crime is rather rampant at times.
What will you be doing and would you be interested in a roommate? The courthouse posts places for rent on their bulletin boards.
Will your employer help you find a place to live?

Good luck and (almost) welcome to Alaska!
oof.
I just put ~ 20 of these battery powered motion lights all over the house so that I can safely walk around and do what I need to do during a power outage. They’re reallllllly nice to have as a back-up, or even just for routine use. At least a few to go to/from the bathroom or kitchen and another one or more to get you to wherever your headlamps, flashlights, candles and other blackout provisions are stored.
My biggest realistic concern: a massive earthquake in sun-zero midwinter. I don’t have a wood stove (yet), so picked up a few different alternative heating and lighting methods with plenty of fuel to run them. Now that I’m feeling relatively prepared for this scenario, I actually do feel able to relax and enjoy the season.
Good luck and I hope your power comes back soon.
I highly recommend personal capital to everyone! It's not a financial advisor but it's a great way to keep on top of everything financial. It has a bunch of really cool tools, my personal favorite is the retirement planner because of the simulations. It also has a way to guide your investments, it's essentially a free robo advisor that tracks everything and tells you what will work for your situation. I hope you find someone who works but personal capital is a great way to get organized on your own!
I saw these on Facebook a while ago and thought it was genius. Sits below your doorknob and props against the floor to prevent someone breaking it in.
I think deterrence goes a long way, try some fake camera’s on Amazon like these after you move in to your new place.
You can do real cameras like Ring/Vivint later, but I think its an easy way to prevent opportunistic crime from those that just wander neighborhoods.
Come on, dude. You're on the internet. Just look it up. If you can't find it in town (just go to a pet store), just order it. You don't need bags from the grocery store to scoop poop.

I don't know where the Blizzard servers are located, but I would think they have US servers. Assuming they do have US servers, then yes that could be a problem with GCI. If Blizzard only has servers in the EU, then it's not a problem at all as you'd no choice but to connect to their EU servers.
I use ExpressVPN as they've worked the best for me - YMMV.

Allows you to add a fused circuit without making modifications to your vehicle wiring. It looks like an oversized fuse holder that has two blade fuses in it. One for the original circuit, and one for the circuit you are adding.
Now, here’s the thing. Newer cars don’t use the old blade fuse size. There are three, different sizes of smaller blade fuse called mini, micro, and micro2.
I bought these off Amazon, they're great... cheap, strong, and they fold easily to fit in my purse so I never forget them.

This is some of the best popcorn I've ever had, it is $40 for a case of 40 pouches but each pouch makes 10 quarts of popcorn. You can either make it up with a whirley pop or just dump the pouch into a big ass pot and shake it across the burner as it goes. If you want to make smaller batches you can always empty half a pouch in and save the rest for later.
Honestly your best bet is go buy one and have it on hand...
I use something like this:
I am around that same area, but more towards the Carrs. Anyway normal antennas just would not work for us for signal. But This one worked magnificently.

What?? I have the 1gig package and lately I’ve been having shit internet. I have this router https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008ABOJKS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_j0S.zbSFZ3W15 and if someone is watching Netflix in the house I barely can load normal web pages. I don’t remember it being like that in the past with Netflix.
I've seen things like this, I'm not sure how much a plate of steel weighs, but this may be comparable and be easier for folks!
Nope, i have a couple like this that fit comfortably in the bathroom to dry overnight.
If you don't have any luck soon, I recommend a craigslist app with notifications that way you will be notified when something becomes available. It is really handy when looking for a specific thing used.
