Indonesia is blocking requests on DNS level only, if you can change your DSN to google's (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) you're good to go. No need for a VPN.
Personally I have Astrill since that's what I need in China, but in Bali I hardly ever switch it on - if only to watch Netflix using my German account, but that's really it.
use ubud as a base to see nearby shit, the rice terraces etc.. rent a scooter and explore the countryside.
i did this hike a few days ago and enjoyed it, go in the morning or evening if you can before the full heat of the day hits ya. Although i didnt have too much of a problem mid afternoon, just needed to stay hydrated
Yes, that is correct, because really, the island isn't all that big. I can only speak for the driver I hire, not for others. Of course, entry fees are not included. If you're even remotely interested in hiring my guy, which I used again this year, contact him as far in advance as possible, to your travel date. He books up VERY quickly.
NextDNS.io . A private DNS for computers/mobiles that bypasses the internet restrictions over there without the need for a VPN, plus acts as an ad/tracker-blocker. And it works for all apps, not just websites.
I never had a fake ticket, usually I'm travelling with a real one (booking a 2-way flight seems to be cheaper than 2 one way).
Nobody ever wanted to see mine. And yes, I believe they only really care about people from lesser developed / poor countries. I've med several Scandinavians and none of them ever mentioned having problems.
By the way, reddit is banned in Indonesia, so while you still can - download a free VPN. I'd go with https://windscribe.com/
Yes, you can definitely get a sim for that in Bali. In fact, there is a Telekomsel cart just outside of immigration at the airport where they can hook you up before you even get to the street. (And, don't worry, the workers will speak decent English). I actually was just there with my own Pixel for a month, mostly in Ubud. I use Google's Project Fi cell service, though, so I didn't bother with a local sim as they don't charge extra for international data roaming. For a local sim with 8 gigs of data I think you would be looking at about $20.
And, yes, as mentioned elsewhere here, you can't get to some websites without a VPN. I have a subscription to Private Internet Access () and it worked well.
Stayed here last Feb in Ubud. It was fantastic. Got the private Villa with small infinity pool.

I would also highly recommend The Gili Islands. Gili Meno is a great honeymoon destination. Tiny island Amazing beaches, very slow and relaxed atmosphere. We stayed right on the beach, for almost nothing.
The challenge is that you're missing some of the key ingredients that are hard to find here. You can get MSG anywhere. Anything from the grocery store or amazon will be fine. Use only a little, it goes a long way.
You need kecap manis. The one my wife likes best (she is from Indonesia) is this brand. You don't need to buy a giant container, my wife just uses this stuff like Americans use normal Ketchup, and this is the exact one we buy.
https://smile.amazon.com/Kecap-Manis-Sweet-Sauce-Refill/dp/B00FJI1OFI/
You need shallot oil. This is the packet of red spicy oil that comes with the instant ramen. This is the brand she likes the best because it has the closes taste to what she gets at home: https://smile.amazon.com/Hot-Crispy-Oil-Original-Shallots/dp/B08FSZRMN8/
For the rest, you just need super fresh ingredients, and you're golden.
Check out Speedify, you can run it on your phone to combine cellular data and wifi, or on your computer to combine wifi and a wired, tethered cellular connection from your phone (or a cheapo usb modem). It bonds the connections, so it will utilize the speed from both connections when both are available, and keep going without dropping if one of the connections has problems or drops.
It's a few dollars a month since it's fundamentally a VPN, but I think they also still have a 2gb free trial, which is certainly enough for a long audio-only call, or a modest length video call.
I have used them since 2017, literally all around the world..never a problem connecting to streaming services in the lots of servers to connect to. I don't know what others have problems I haven't had any negative experience with ExpressVPN. it will definitely fulfill the requirements you outlined...
Thanks Kizza.
So, if I were to use (for example) ExpressVPN/NordVPN or the like, and select a server located in Melbourne (or anywhere in aus) I should have no issues in accessing Kayo, which is geoblocked completely to aus (as opposed to say Disney and Netflix which are just region specific in what they have licensed in those areas but still accessible)
Currently in Bali - I use Private Internet Access and can guarantee it will work with Netflix, Disney+ and Reddit from Bali.
I also work in IT, and you'll only need to confirm that the VPN has an Australian proxy location that works with each of those services. The person testing it doesn't need to be in Bali as all VPN services work from here.
How "open" haha? I stayed here in January of this year. Its all open with no AC so a little getting used to. It puts you up in the rice paddies and 10 min walk to downtown so very quiet with easy access. They own about 4 private villas in the area so the pool is shared but no one was there in 3 days we spent. Message me if you want more information.
Edit: Just saw the you wanted a Spa on site. This place doesn't have a "spa" but does offer on site massage.
i just stayed here 2 weeks ago... smaller/cheaper place, with splash pool, and walkable to many places in Canggu (which is rare). the host, Jan, was nice & very responsive. he suggested a driver for us named Gede, who was born/raised in Canggu so he knew many cool places to take us. Gede & Jan both speak fluent english.
yeah i feel you, even though balinese language is a mandatory class at elementary-high school. but surprisingly, those 9 years didnt help me understand it completely. I can only speak in basa bali kasar, and that i learnt from everyday conversations with my friends back then. and some polite balinese phrases.
I agree with messiah that you should remember the ultimate grateful gesture "Matur suksma" or thank you in balinese, most balinese are very friendly, and when a foreigner shows their gratitude in balinese language, i can guarantee you will get a big big radiant smile from then.
lol oh maybe this could help you too,http://wikitravel.org/en/Balinese_phrasebook

It's not exactly the same, but try https://rasterbator.net/ and link/upload the photo there, play around with the dot size (7-10mm is the sweet spot) and print size, and the results are usually pretty cool.
The offline version lets you choose more paper sizes as well, I'll typically just go for A0 and leave it at 1.
> google's (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) you're good to go. No need for a VPN.
Might I suggest quad 9? (9.9.9.9)
It's a free service maintained by security experts to filter spam and protect your privacy. Details
Used to use a paid service called TunnelBear but none of them are available on F-Droid so I switched up. There are some pretty cool new privacy tools coming out now that states like CN and Singapore are building surveillance AI-powered panopticons. I'm no luddite but giving people who steal through taxes the right to monitor terrifies the shit out of me.
Yeah I read something about some hotels/motels or whatever didn't have the restriction for some reason. That might be why you can brows it. But at my hotel I get network error and can't access Reddit AT ALL. I paid like 3 bucks for a monthly fee on SurfEasy which works great.
try gojek app or grab for going around. Like uber but for scooter or cars. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gojek.app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.grabtaxi.passenger
Maps.me is recommended

You are not required to register with passport. I just bought from a vendor in ubud last month, no questions asked.
anti-itch (cortisone) cream & antibiotics!
antibiotics: i was just in ubud on a yoga retreat, and 10 out of 25 in the group got sick.
anti-itch cream: i did bring mosquito repellant, and douse myself in it daily, but there is no way you won't get bit.
the best thing i brought was this bad boy right here.
safe travels!
