I liked the way this is being sold so much I considered buying it even though I didn’t like R1. A very modern style of purchasing with a much smaller carbon footprint than the traditional method of buying a poster. Really cool. It’s a brilliant design too.

This is a collection of pages from my new book: HEADS. I spent a mighty long time making it so I hope that some of you like it.
The actual book is in colour but I'm pleased with the black & whites, so here they are. Boop.
If it looks like the kind of thing you'd like enough to throw money at (!) you can do so on Comixology
Or if it looks like the kind of thing you'd like to check out without paying for I'll soon be posting it on my Tumblr
Either way, I hope it finds you well.

Books:
Artists:
Hey, awesome to see someone making such a push to improve the quality of their work!
I would highly, HIGHLY recommend the books of Andrew Loomis, one of the most important commercial illustrators of the first half of the 20th century. He wrote/illustrated a series of instructional books that, if you apply what he teaches you, will take you from complete novice to expert illustrator. In particular the books you'll find most useful are Figure Drawing for all its Worth and Drawing the Head and Hands. All of Loomis' books are out of print AFAIK, but you can find pdfs here.
These books have been used by a great many professional comic illustrators when they were also first learning to draw. Hell, Steve Rude has been so heavily influenced by Loomis and his style that Rude is practically the modern incarnation of the artist.
For straight-up drawing, I'd recommend Andrew Loomis' books, which are available for free in PDF format. He was an old-school illustrator who really knew his stuff, and his books are practically scripture in some circles. I'd recommend starting with "Figure Drawing for All It's Worth". "Creative Illustration" has an excellent chapter on perspective, as well.
You mentioned that you're currently trying to get better at perspective, and I encourage you to make it a priority -- strong perspective skills are one of the most important things for a comic artist. Perspective isn't just for buildings and cars -- it's a part of everything -- part of every picture, even if there's not a single straight line or man-made object. You don't necessarily need to know every fancy trick for drawing perfect architectural perspective, but a strong, intuitive grasp of perspective -- to the point where you don't really have to think about it anymore -- is incredibly helpful.
If you intend to do interiors, Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics" (and maybe "Making Comics", though I don't find it as essential) and Will Eisner's "Comics and Sequential Art" will give you a good foundation. A good book on cinematography will also be really helpful, as comics have a lot in common with film. "The 5 C's of Cinematography" is classic, and I found "The Filmmaker's Eye" to be really helpful with composition.
Best of luck! Drawing comics is super fun!

Thanks for the nice feedback :), appreciate it
This. A thousand times this.
I highly recommend Figure Drawing For All It's Worth, by Andrew Loomis.
This will teach you everything from dynamic figure drawing to perspective. This was essential to every comic book artist of my generation and before. Not so much for the artists (and I use that term loosely) today, and it shows.

Pick up "Stan Lee's How to Draw Comics". Lots of nuts and bolts aimed at the comic fan. Perportion, perspective, anatomy... Another great book is How to Draw Beautiful Women by Frank Cho. I also STRONGLY recommend Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. But yeah. Draw every day even if its for 20 minutes just do it.

First, this is awesome. Love that sketch. But am I not seeing a penny sleeve on the card as well? Cards can get pretty damaged if you don't put them in a penny sleeve before the toploader. Amazon link for sleeves.

Your linework is really good and your shading is solid, but you know that already. If you'd like feedback on something that will give your work more comic-style "pop," itvs the perspective. I'd love to see someone with your natural talent use some of that Kirby-style dynamic perspective.
When I worked at an LCBS, we had a lot of established comic artists come in and I'd ask them a million questions. One of the foundational texts that they mentioned, other than How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way was Dynamic Figure Drawing by Byrne Hogarth. There's a lot of great stuff in there that will help you find the angles that work best for your style. The other trick they all said was to steal as much from Jack Kirby as possible.
Set in England 10 years from now after an epidemic known as the red death has brought the country to its knees, a scientist heralded as its savior goes missing. Her husband is blamed for her death, is jailed and begins to lose his mind.
Due to lack of evidence he is released and starts to investigate his wife's disappearance. He finds the partially completed cure, a miracle drug she was developing before she disappeared, the proof that could clear him. However, his distrust of the world he lives in convinces him he has only one option, he injects himself with the serum she created.
He gains strange and unique powers and will stop at nothing until he finds his wife and uncovers the truth. With the whole world still wanting nothing more then the end of his existence.
The closer to the truth, the deeper his insanity.

The future that never was - KITTY KITTY by Quentin Raffoux & Aliénor Rossi
Join sassy space cat Lee and his Desert Eagle-toting, soda-swigging human partner, Ali, in a future that never was. Board the dynamic duo’s ship, the mythical Kitty, as they bounty-hunt their way through a solar system where the Soviets got to the Moon first; where space is a lawless void; where cats talk and pizza comes in a can. It’s an alternate history as only the 80s could have built it—so lock and load and shout Cowabunga! because it’s crime-fightin’ time!
Artist: Théo Saragas
If you are looking to practice coloring, you layer behind the inks, add flats & then render. The inks don't have to be layered. Sometimes, it is just one layer. If you are looking to recolor the inks as a separate layer, then lasso the part you need, copy & paste to new layer.
Hope that helps!
Here's a great book by Brian & Kristy Miller, who are industry vets: Hi-Fi Color for Comics
I wouldn't say I have much experience either, but I am a long-time comic book fan and I've been drawing my whole life. When I first became interested in drawing comics, I was overwhelmed on how to start because there is no one way to become a comic book artist. I did a ton of research into the education and career paths of a bunch of my favorite artists and writers, and all of them came into the business differently.
To learn more about the process of creating comics, I read a lot of books on the subject. Amazon has a ton of great books, such as the "DC Comic's Guide" series. Here's a link to one of them: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0385344724/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_U_x_8gJNEbRHXT125
To build my confidence as an artist, I took classes at my local art center. I would check to see if you have an art center nearby that offers classes. They were pretty cheap and are great for exploring new mediums and styles too!
Currently, I'm a graphic design major. Not all of my classes have anything to do with my aspirations, but they've given me the tools to make my work more professional. It's pretty much essential to know Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator in the comics industry.
My final piece of advice is to read a lot of comics. Studying published comics can help you see what works well, get inspiration, and develop your own style. If you find an artist that you really like, find them on social media. Most creators will post their process and give tutorials.
I hope this helped. Best of luck and keep practicing!
For the splatter I just used white watercolor that was saturated pretty heavily. For the thicker lines I used a PENTEL PRESTO https://www.amazon.com/Pentel-Presto-Correction-fl-oz-ZL31WBP-K6/dp/B001EXR2C6/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_sspa?keywords=pentel+white+out+pen&qid=1566255264&s=gateway&sprefix=pentel+white+out+&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGl...
These are the books that I keep next to my drawing table. I have art books that cover a lot of other territory as well, but these are the ones that are always within reach.
On my bookshelf:
*Nicolaides the Natural way to draw
*Constructive Anatomy - Bridgeman
*The Human Machine- Bridgeman
*Heads, Features and Faces - Bridgeman
*The Book of a Hundred Hands - Bridgeman
*Anatomy for the Artist - Barcsay
*Figure Drawing for all it’s Worth - Loomis
*Drawing the Head and Hands - Loomis
*Creative Illustration - Loomis
*Fun with a Pencil - Loomis
*Freehand Drawing self taught - Guptill
*Atlas of Anatomy for the Artist - Peck
*Dynamic figure drawing - Hogarth
*Drawing the Head and Figure - Hamm
Most of these have already been mentioned but these are my picks:
Will Eisner - Comics and Sequential Art
Scott McCloud - Making Comics
Marcos Mateu-Mestre - Framed Ink
Andrew Loomis - Figure Drawing for All It's Worth
I draw comics as a hobby, just for my own enjoyment so I'm hardly an expert here. You mentioned you had a plot in mind, so you've chosen the extra-difficult role of writer-artist.
The biggest barrier I've hit is in trying to apply what I've learned about figure drawing to actually telling a story. It's one thing to be able to draw fantastic faces and bodies (I can't), but getting them to animate through a series of panels is just nightmarishly hard.
On top of all the other things you're going to be practicing, I'd suggest you start trying to tell stories in the medium, even with just vaguely sketched in stick-men. I wouldn't get too hung up on making things beautiful at first, but just putting things together in a way that is readable, comprehensible, interesting and well paced is where the real art of comics lies. Dramatic splash pages are great to look at but first and foremost you're telling a story.
Good luck! And practice, practice, practice.
Looks great!
My biggest advice: keep drawing.
My secondary advice: draw the entire figure in the frame. This really help your sense of the entire character and space. For anatomy, I suggest the book "Figure Drawing for All It's Worth" by Andrew Loomis. It's out of print, but is very easy to find a .PDF
If you're serious, I would also pick one to focus on: line art, inking or coloring. This will really help hone in your natural talent. :)
+/u/dogetipbot 200 doge verify
Its good. The proportions are a little weird but they're not bad. You should read Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. I put it off for a while but it really helps.
I would definitely recommend Fear Agent. One of my favorite series. You can pick up the first trade for fairly cheap on Amazon.
Otherwise the Library Edition is on sale and you get a ton with it.
So this should give you a good introductory to PS colouring while also moving up to some basic professional techniques, and I use one of these for my tablet.
The Wacom Bamboo series is affordable and really great to start with. There's a learning curve if you're coming from tangible media, but it's something you get used to.
