That will be from using the onboard soundcard. You can't really get any decent performance from those without having enormous buffer sizes. Get yourself an entry-level soundcard to begin with. In the meantime, try out the ASIO4ALL driver. ASIO drivres give better performance.
You could try the free plugin called ADSR Sample Manager instead of the Media bay. I have too many samples for the media bay to be efficient to use as well, and this plugin has saved me. You can drag and drop samples directly onto your tracks from it.
> They found that “minimum performance improves substantially once you hit 25% spare area for these [consumer] drives.” Their final recommendation was that you should “plan on using only about 75% of [your drive’s] capacity if you want a good balance between performance consistency and capacity.”

25% is a lot though, so that's news to me too. Right now I have about 5gb free of 60, so I guess I should have more like 15gb. I've noticed some slowdown, I have to say. It's sporadic though and still miles faster than my old HDD, so maybe it's not worth worrying about.
Also, it seems to be write speed that slows down, not read speed, so just pulling samples you shouldn't notice a difference.
Cakewalk has been free for a while and you can download it through their app (https://www.bandlab.com/products/desktop/assistant/download/windows). I haven't actually used either since it went free so I don't know if there's marketing or hidden fees or anything though.
Try this -
Cubase is very particular about its video formats.

Try running them through something like that. There are probably freeones around.

edit I thought there was a free vst sub too but I can't find it
It might be that your Zoom is outputting line level and your amp is expecting instrument level. Putting a DI between them should resolve that.

I have this laptop with the Focusrite 4i4. Before I got the interface I was using Asio4All and a USB mic running Cubase 12 Pro and it was alright but the interface is an improvement. I will be upgrading RAM soon but it handles everything fine until I convert to Atmos. No glaring errors, I can just see the performance monitor indicating it's a much greater strain. Hence the memory upgrade.
An M1 will probably perform better than my laptop, but at what cost? For 2500 you could build a laptop that could do just as well
Laptop users please advise.
Got a new laptop (HP Envy X360 i5-1135G7). It only has a 500gb SSD. But is does have an SD Card slot.
After installing just Cubase 11 on Windows 11, a big portion of drive space is no longer available. I only have 379gb free
If I where to purchase a 256gb SD card and installed my huge Komplete 13 and Arturia collection on that, instead of the C drive, do you think they would still performant/fast enough?
An example 'fast' SD card is below.. thanks for any advice

You might find this one helpful: The Complete Guide to Music Technology using Cubase 11. It not only helps you learn Cubase, but also solidifies your understanding of music and technology concepts to help you have success with the music your are making.
I agree with r/GuitarWisdom : troubleshoot your system first. Open task manager and sort based on 'CPU' and see what's using the most CPU time. Disable anything near the top of that list that isn't necessary. The nVidia Containers are a common culprit if you have an nVidia card.
Also, run Latency Monitor for 10 minutes or more and go to the drivers tab and see what's at the top of the list there. Disable anything you can at the top.
And for cleaning up Win 10 easily give this a try: Winaero Tweaker Using this after installing Win 10 (over Win 7) is was able to get my initial RAM load down from 3.1 Gb to 1.45 Gb and helped get rid of my initial latency problems.
Eh, it's glitchy as fuck. Used to be pretty solid but since the 64 bit transition it's been flakey. I've been moaning about it on the FL forums but no one else seems to care (irony being that I bought the Producer Edition of FL just before the transition so... yeah, not cool).
A quick fix I use is loopMIDI which I use to trigger samplers in FL from Cubase (although I only use FL as a glorified sample browser so YMMV).
I feel all Ableton tracks ‘sound’ the same. Tried it a few times but not for me. Don’t feel that with Cubase at all. Nowadays getting interested in sound generating software’s like Max8: https://cycling74.com/products/max-features
Put your active Cubase projects on your SSD (and Cubase & your OS, obviously).
When you're done working on a project, move it to an HDD "archive" (I personally put mine on an external drive if they're older than X years, leaving newer ones on one of my internal HDDs).
I put samples that I've created & use often on one of my SSD's, and my giant unsorted sample library on a HDD (which I typically access with ADSR Sample Manager).
People recommend putting your sample library on an SSD, but if you have a large one, I wouldn't really recommend it unless you got money to burn.
I think you always take a risk by downloading, from a website you don't know, but it looks pretty professional. this is safe and there's a lot of other safe sites around the internet, but you can never be 100 sure.
Try this: https://www.vb-audio.com/Voicemeeter/index.htm
You can route your cubase outputs to the virtual outputs of voicemeeter, then in Zoom or whatever set that as the input channel.
I know folks are giving you trouble for using a cracked version but I did the same thing so I could spend a longer period of time living in the space. I wasn't a professional moving over to another DAW. I was figuring things out for the first time mostly.
I've since picked up a legit copy and Cubase is my main system now. It is a steep price to get into at first but it's a great day to day utility if you're spending quite a bit of time in the software. Any bugs that I've come across have been patched out relatively quickly.
If you're just getting into music and are looking for a lower cost of entry then I would suggest Reaper.fm. It's a really flexible workhorse of a system that will do most everything you want for an affordable rate.
Grab a trail copy of the most recent versions of both DAWs and see which one you prefer. Be aware that the newest version of Cubase won't support your native 32bit VSTs without a little black magic.
Hope this helps.
I think this could be a solution. Disable USB 3 function in the BIOS. This is interesting, because on my Windows laptop my older MIDI hardware only works on the USB 2 port (intended for older mouse, etc...), not on the other USB 3 ports.
Likely not going to be the case for you, but the issue I had with downloads failing for me recently was due to the firewall on my router. I have an Ubiquiti UniFi Dream Machine Pro. It blocked anything which uses aria2 which Cubase download manager uses (also Native Access) as it identifies that as malware by default. I had to override that, and downloads then worked for me.
If you haven't made any changes to your networking hardware, then maybe try disabling any anti-virus/malware/firewall software on your mac? Maybe something is triggering that detection and you have to figure out how to override it.
If some items are downloading, but most aren't, I doubt this will be it though since I would expect it to fail 100% of the time if this was the case (again, that's how it manifested for me).
It's also worth looking at the logs for the downloader. They might give you a better clue as to what is happening. I'm not sure where they are on Mac, but on Windows they are at: %LocalAppData%\Steinberg Download Assistant\logs
I have the B-3 V and load it into an empty project and I just get activity on channel 1 when I play notes on my MIDI controller. Cubase shouldn't be sending anything on 16 unless you set it up to do so, which in an empty project with just the B-3 V on it, I assume you haven't.
Do you have other MIDI devices attached to your system? I would try disabling them and see if you still see activity on 16. How are you monitoring this? Are you using MIDI-Ox to see the activity on 16?
I've bought the Kontrol Master years ago. I just have to hover the mouse on something (faders, sliders, knobs) and then I can control it with the big knob, the arcade buttons are cool too because I can also assign any key command/macro and I can also use them for MIDI notes.
Just to be clear I do not recommend this thing, not because it is not awesome, but because support is the worst. In fact support is totally nonexistent.
It stopped working as soon as I updated to Win10 and after them sending tons of messages asking for an updated driver, I finally got a reply from someone who was not working for them anymore. The dude was kind enough to send me a working driver and said he was sorry about how they were handling things at Touch Innovations. I guess this will be the last update for this $300 piece of gear... I think they don't even have a website anymore. Pathetic.
That was a great product and I'm lucky that I can still use it...
I'd love to get my hands on a cc121 one day but, I'm in Canada and it's impossible to find one here... I would also have to sell a kidney or something lol
I'm not a Mac guy, so I cannot advise you there. I had Elements (on Windows) versions 7, 9, 10 and 11. And now Artist 11. I don't think there is much difference between Element 10 and 11. But alot more difference than 3. If you keep your current Mac, get Elements 10. When you replace your Mac, upgrade Elements to 11 or whatever is out at the time.
As far as your DX7 as a MIDI controller, I recently bought a MIDI to USB 'y' cable on Amazon. Worked great. Here is an example:
I don’t know the answer to that. I have the Logitech MX Ergo Wireless Trackball Mouse. It has some extra buttons and software.

https://www.amazon.ca/UGREEN-Braided-Amplifier-Digital-Keyboard/dp/B00Y2LANUU/ this one looks better to me, stereo 1/4 to stereo 3.5
https://www.amazon.com/BEHRINGER-U-Control-Low-Latency-Interface-Digital/dp/B000KW2YEI
I have 2 versions of these, I use them to run audio out of my laptop when I play edrums.
I can get down to 64 samples latency and for the price I won't cry if they get broken when I'm playing somewhere
Thank you for the feedback! The Behringer U-Control that I have is the silver colored one, like this one...https://www.amazon.com/Behringer-UCA202-BEHRINGER-U-CONTROL/dp/B000KW2YEI/ref=sr_1_2?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1512068272&sr=1-2&keywords=behringer+u-control
My keyboard is connected to a Xenyx mixer, the mixer is connected to the macbook via the U-Control. I suppose I have to add the U-Control to my Cubase Input through Device Set up first? I don't have any MIDI connection, I believe this is purely digital connection, no MIDI connections.
That's about a $200 piece of kit. Allen & Heath makes a similar prodect for about the same price, but with 4 in and 4 out. Might as well return it and get what you really want/need.

I hope this doesn't come too late:
I just upgraded from Cubase AI 8 (came with my Steinberg audio interface) to Cubase Elements 9 for 50€. If you you still need a good audio interface and can spare $150, i can really recommend this, as it has Cubase AI included. For me the upgrade to Elements was worth it though, because I need the proper guitar VST amp rack and the groove agent SE for drums. Just get Elements, if you don't need an audio interface, it's pretty good.
If you are a student, you can get the edu-version for about a third less, I think.
