I wonder how wastewater engineers would make use of slimes and oozes, especially the gelatinous cube. This somehow manages to eat anything that is not metal.
That said, enough of these things reproducing would produce their own blockages of the system, one would suppose.
I didn't actually hand-draw any of this. This map was made entirely using the program Wonderdraft. I found it to be a much more intuitive and impressive version of Inkarnate. You can purchase it for about 30 bucks. I highly recommend it, simply for the river and coastline tools.
Major shout out to OP for calling Watabou "the creator of pixel dungeon" because god knows i never have enough chances to champion this fantastic game.
It's a traditional roguelike made for Android, with a version available on PC. Its open source, which means anybody can make a mod of it if they want to. This has led to the creation of a number of mods that majorly improve on the original. I recommend Shattered PD which is made by 00-Evan, and is one of the highest quality indie games I've played.
This is a map for one of my free two-page fantasy adventures, Do it for the Beast, but feel free to grab it and restock it. The map is CC-BY-NC 4.0, so you can reuse it for anything non-commercial.
The Realm of Aesen is the world in which me and my closest friends play D&D 5e in. It had a humble beginning where i only made a very small location map with a few towns strewn in and it has grown into this world map which it is today.

The Northern Kingdoms hold the north protected by a barrier of mountains from the rest of the realm. Here the all the dwarfish kingdoms have rose to unite under the banner of the High-King.
The Last Sovereign control the Aspaarian deserts of the east as well as much of the land surrounding it as well. Here all races who want to seek a better life live in coexistence in the huge cities erected by the now deceased Sovereign Gwyneth.
The Order of the Raven lies in the murky and dark south of the realm. Here the landscape is harsh and the reign of the King even harsher. But even the king fall under the dominion of the Raven God Nevermore, who controls the faction from the shadows.
The Empire of the Gods rest in the west as the strongest of the five major factions. The empire has always followed of the Gods of old, whom where shattered during the War of Mortality. Even though their Gods have gone, they still hold true to the traditions and principles they left behind.
The Emerald Enclave have complete and utter control of the center of the realm, they built their whole society around the dead corpse of a God, Zaw'mjir, who was the world tree and the one to control nature itself. After his passing the faction took it upon themselves to uphold his job.
I made this using the latest version of Photoshop CC and THIS brush set by Joel Pigou.
A week ago, I posted this map, the Cradle of the Elverfolk, and received some wonderful comments. I've now started a new account, so I can keep my personal profile separate from this one, as I intend to branch out into other projects, and I want a dedicated account for that.

This here is a remake of my original world map, with the Cradle right in the middle. For a sense of scale, the Cradle itself is roughly the size of France.

This map represents the world as known to the post-apocalyptic scholars of the Free City of Farport (left-of-centre).

Once again, I have to thank Joel Pigou for the excellent tools.
Well of course they have :-), everything nostalgic about video games is online, including every console and PC game for the first 4 generations, to play in your browser. The mountains and trees were a photoshop brush done by this chap as I don't have time to sit down and draw several mountains to copy and paste. The final map had 85 layers, not including labels, and had many more that were combined. I used this tutorial to get myself started, but quickly moved away from that black and white format when I found the inkarnate textures. I found inkarnate to be far too small to be useful in anyway at all to me, besides the textures which can be clone stamped and blended together using layers, opacity and flow.
Super nice. One complaint: Red text feels bad. It's not incredibly easy to read in the provided palette. I have to strain to see it in a small size, and in a large size its still a bit tough to read. Something brighter would be good.
In this case I'd try something close to hex #9DFAA9 or #6E53AD. Perhaps not those exact values, but in that general area. I'm eyeballing the colors and using the tool below:
It might just do the trick for you! you can plug in values and set up a palette super quickly! https://color.adobe.com/create/color-wheel
Simple, but necessary!
Maybe it fits into this app i am using, gonna test: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Tomorrow.Roll20TabletopRpgMaps&hl=pt\_BR&gl=US
It also useful to manage tokens in your presential tabletop rpg games.
Our campaign is about to reach my characters hometown and the DM asked me to describe it, so I made a map.
Greenreach is small town on the River Atlai, which serves as it's main trade route. To the east and south it is flanked by large hill sides, with a small brook flowing down the eastern hill, past the vineyards, through the town and into the river. The town is surrounded by many farms and fields and mainly exports agricultural goods.
The Map was done with Wonderdraft using asstes by 2-Minute Tabletop.

here's another fun one for when you dont feel like figuring out where you want your countries and cities at

Made with Azgaar's Fantasy Map Generator https://azgaar.github.io/Fantasy-Map-Generator/
It's very simple and easy to use. This took me about 45 minutes including some minor additions (legend, compass, bridges, roads) in microsoft paint
My D&D 5e Character, Zorig Draltus, is from Emerald Falls, and my DM asked me to help with some content ideas for future quests. I gave him this map of my character's homeland along with my character's backstory.
>Also a bit of river above the top of the map would make sense to add in no matter what you figure is going on with the water.
Clearly, there is a large Decanter of Endless Water (or several) in each of those walls providing water to the city. The drawback is they're slowly desalinizing the ocean while raising the water table so they're sinking themselves but no-one has been able to convince the wizard's council of this.
What kind of non-magical peasant village do you live in that has to use real water features for sustenance?
but yes, your critiques of this all seem on point.

At the time I believed I used some generic app for half of it and just went with what phonetically sounded appropriate given the feel I wanted for the regions.
My goal with my first campaign was a sandbox approach where my players aimed the experience in the direction they wanted. As given the pandemic I had a lot of time to moderately flesh out a continent. 😅
Hi everybody,
For this end of april you can find a first set of 21 Static (Tier 1) or Animated Tiles (Tier 2 and 3) and Interactive Battlemap for Tier 3 on my patreon: https://www.patreon.com/3DWildObj
To build a dungeon with these, it's a pretty easy ... just place them where you want to create great adventures. Of course you can use them with your favorites VTTs or for Tabletop Tvs.
Soon I'll add a tutorial to use Powerpoint or Prezi (online collaborative presentation software: https://prezi.com/) to build huge dungeons and to play rpg using those tiles.
Another thing, soon I'll add another TIER tomy patreon with 3D objects to import in 3D VTTs such as Wildshape. Those tiles will belong to the list of objects ... in 3D they are great and I've made a full adventure that will come soon with them (the adventure will come in animated and static versions too).
Enjoy,
3DWildObj

Let me know if you use it for anything, I'd love to hear how it goes.
No, I used photoshop and some of my own know how. I watched a bunch of tutorials. There are some brush packs I bought to help with the cities and other details on the map.
Brush pack: https://gumroad.com/joelpigou
Thanks! It was made in Photoshop, mostly using these brushes. The fonts are free on Dafont.
I started by essentially tracing over Schley's map for 4th and 5th edition, to get the forests and hills and mountains in the right places, as well as the major roads and towns.
Then I just started adding new landmarks in the approximate locations that they seemed to be referenced as I read about them.
Patrons on my Patreon page have access to high res versions, the PSDs of the maps as well as textless maps that are available for personal, non-commercial use under a CC BY NC licence.

I made this using the latest version of Photoshop CC and THIS brush set by Joel Pigou.
Looking for any critiques on my world map. I'm using the brush sets from Joel Pigou. I'm not 100% happy with the roads and i'm having some issues making rivers on the map. Any tips for how to make this map a little bit better will be greatly appreciated.
My wife's first play with Dungeondraft and have to say I'm impressed. Wanted to share in case others find it useful as it's better to look at the original map, faithful to the source material and easy to import into Roll20.
56 x 41, 70 PPI.
Thank you. I'm glad you like it. I drew the elements with pen and paper (there are a lot of tutorials on the internet). I combined the whole thing in a game engine (godot). You can also find a lot of tutorials. But it requires more knowledge.

For sure! That’s one of my favorite aspects about video game maps and I think it makes them so engaging! I love when a map is used to encourage gameplay.
Totally understand! I’m gonna brainstorm that idea though and how I could apply it in the code for the map. But as for resources, I use QGIS and Mapbox to create these interactive maps. There are some decent tutorials out there to get you familiarized with each, but I’ll be streaming my process towards the end of the month as a part of a series of cartographic workshops put on by my friend. I’ll post more details on Instagram when that time draws closer!
I think it's Wonderdraft. Their display maps almost always have those compass lines. https://www.wonderdraft.net/
I've never used it but watched a video of their stuff the other day. I've been using Inkarnate for the last year or so.
I'm an avid Linux user and one of the best strategy games available in many different software catalogues across distros is 'Battle for Wesnoth'. An added bonus you get when you install this game is the handy map editor. Granted, it won't create a super high resolution map for your game, as BfW itself is pretty low spec, it offers all of the tools you would need to create something like what you see above.
Even though this game was produced in 2003, it is still very lively with an extensive community providing mods and additional assets.
This game is available on STEAM or from https://www.wesnoth.org/. If you are looking for a quick and dirty hex mapper, this might be just for you!
Edit: It is also available on Mac/PC!
I made this map in Photoshop, using many of the techniques from the [gaijin cartography series](gaijin.com) (great resource!). This town is the current home base of my players.
If you're a Photoshopper yourself and want to repurpose the map for yourself, you can download the PSD here. The PSD has over 50 layers organized into 15 groups.
Check out this website that will generate a map for you and you can just change the names:
https://azgaar.github.io/Fantasy-Map-Generator/
Probably gonna save you a lot of time and you wont need the practice or art skills necessary to make it look polished.
If you don't like the map it makes, just refresh until you find a shape you like, then start customizing the details.
You can try wonderdraft or this one https://azgaar.github.io/Fantasy-Map-Generator/, you don’t have to start from zero which these. Wonderdraft isn’t free but is just a one time purchase (not monthly or annual) and since is a program is very easy to use, the other one is kinda hard to understand at the beginning but the creator is constantly updating it, there is no “ctrl-z” feature (which I hate because I have to save every i do something and reload the old saved file in case I want to go back) but is for large scale maps, it auto generates states, roads, burgs and cultures and rivers and using a real life database assigns name that sound like reals; in it you also set the temperature, the distance from the poles and the general size of the planet, sculpt the height of the land and then generating a map that follows your directions. Then you can customize the map with almost endless filters and almost every icon is editable. Also you can export your map in svg (scalable vector graphic) which means that you can zoom as long as you like without loosing quality and can be read from any browser (just drag and drop).
I honestly never used wonderdraft but I follow the subreddit and the maps they upload are fantastic since its basically photoshop for Dnd maps, with https://azgaar.github.io/Fantasy-Map-Generator/ you won’t get pure beautiful maps like those, but you can easily generate a map of your continents filled with cities named after cultures automatically placed, saving a lot of time
I initially used Azgaar's Fantasy Map Generator to get a somewhat realistic map with straight-edge borders or other weird geography. I converted the world by hand, drawing over the land by alt-tabbing between WonderDraft and an image export from the Generator. From that point it was just a matter of putting in all the terrain and towns.
The generator doesn't necessarily create the most inspired terrain, so I added some of that in myself. Stuff like lake- and terrain-names are also not included, so you can really see that I cut some corners on that part. I added in "Kingdom of Ohmun" myself, which didn't exist before the start of my homebrew campaign.
You should definitely give it a try! I'm lazy on making up my own symbols so I used mostly the map symbols from the DungeonMorph dice, here is one of the sets: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0158XNO4C/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_XztIFbM519RED
I recommend making the important locations first and just filling in the gaps with different things until it looks good. The symmetry of the Elvish District was the hardest to plan out, which I think helped give it a more regal look.
I have this book which is nice for reference:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Great-City-Maps-historical-paintings/dp/0241238986
It covers more late Medieval period but is still of some relevance, though not so much in the sense of borders.
In most cases though you'd see most of the important areas built behind the main wall then a whole bunch of stuff beyond the walls suburbs, farms, etc - but it would depend on the age of the wall and how much the city had grown since then - in some cases youd even see multiple layers of defensive walls or a fortified keep in the centre.
In terms of borders, before the age of reliable cartography the most common method would simply be based on what was visible - rivers, mountains, forests etc.
I have that book too! I found Blando really useful as well, definitely a good buy.
Thanks! I drew it all on an iPad using Procreate.
Started with a super-rough sketch with where I was gonna put everything--towns, rivers, and all. Then I started on the "real thing." Coastlines (and lakes) first, making them more complex than in the rough sketch. Then mountains, forests, doing all the bits by hand. (If I'd been using Photoshop, I might have tried to clone or make some kind of "tree brush," but I think the hand-drawing makes it look more natural.)
Next came the coastline outlines and waves. Then rivers and cities. I separated as much as I could into layers so I could mess with it later.
Colored the water on one layer, then did the land on its own layer. In general, I'm very unhappy with the color and will probably do it over at some point.
I assume everybody in the sub knows about this book, but it's got step-by-step instructions that are more or less what I did (the book takes it a lot farther into labeling and stuff that I'm not planning to do on this map). Can't recommend the book enough--it's what I would have dreamed for twenty-thirty years ago when I was actively playing RPGs!
