30 minutes to hour. Depends on how difficult it is. One of my favorite little helper is this website where you can remove background from images. Googling the right images, downloading the right movie, doing some photoshopping and editing with power director.
Data can be stored on much more than just the hard drives or flash storage. A skilled attacker with physical access can access get information from EPROMs, the bios, keyboard and mouse controllers, RAM (if it's chilled very quickly right after powering off), HDD controllers and just about anything else.
The TV show is a bit dramatised, but it's not that far from the truth.
As a real world example, GCHQ had The Guardian literally angle-grind off every controller chip on the motherboards of their laptops that had leaked data on it. See:

There’s an incredible strategic puzzle game called Osmos based off this very concept. Every mission is to gobble up the smaller blobs, and avoid the ones bigger than you, to avoid getting eaten. Wonderful way to spend a few hours.
