I'm glad this was written by somebody who had tried out Google Glass and then decided to return it--that's a healthy perspective between "Glass is stupid!" and "Glass will change everything!" (A site redesign or CMS malfunction seems to have eaten his original post about why he returned Glass, but you can read it via the Wayback Machine).
Yes lets hope that some moron doesn't think it is OK to assault some one because they are wearing a camera on their face.
From reading an article on TechCrunch, the device doesn't do much (if anything) without being paired.
It sounds like America's largest vision insurer, VSP, will reimburse the cost of the lenses and $120 on the cost of the frames.
Sure!
Right now I've actually got my web cam feed (the IP Webcam app for Android, I'm using an old phone) running inside the Glass browser fine.
All I've got intended for the Glass app is for a voice trigger to load that web page in the browser app. Second to-do item is embedding a webview inside the app. Third is to allow the user to add/jump to bookmarks via ... I'm not sure, maybe a mini phone app. Third/fourth version is to add bookmarks from QR codes. (Who knows how much of that I'll actually get done.)
I believe it would be better to write you own apps for it. Since I don't have GAPPS installed I go to apkmirror.com and apkpure.com to download apps. I also have a thumbwheel I use to navigate the pointer with and a usb keyboard. I wanted to get a sort of" Iron Man" look to the layout.
Not that it helps me right now, but for anyone outside of the US who wants the latest iPhone MyGlass app and doesn't want to set up a separate US iTunes account just to download it, I've posted the most recent version 0.5.0 here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/hnhgbq
You can just drag it on to your iPhone in iTunes and it will transfer it over.
I did, way back in the days of XE8. I didn't find it very useful, so I didn't keep it installed. I can do a detailed writeup if you like, but the tl;dr: is to:
Just curious, though: What do you want to do with Linux on Glass? :)
Of course! It's been a while since using them both together now, but if you go to :
https://ifttt.com/google_glass The app is called IFTTT (got it wrong above, my apologies) I set it up to basically "if notification, then push to Google glass"
It was as simple as that. The apps really simple to use. Give it a go, if you struggle let me know! The website is rather straight forward also
I agree, and any head gestures would awkwardly appear in the video. Hands-free isn't likely going to happen but hands-off Glass could be achieved with be a paired bluetooth device that initiates the extend video intent.
I backed this project and, while it's not exactly, "hands-free", I am interested in seeing how I can incorporate it with Glass: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1761670738/ring-shortcut-everything
You can understand why West Virginia is seeking to ban it in some cases. Read here
Since everyone's concern seems to be recording issues. Would having a piece like this make people feel more comfortable around glass wearers? I think it would be hard to argue that people are recording with a bright colored lens cap on.
Kind of. I can navigate most things, but not all. Currently I'm working on getting an on-screen mouse pointer set up that I can control with the touchpad.
Edit: I have succeeded in adding a mouse, using software called [Root] On-screen Pointer (download: https://apkpure.com/root-on-screen-pointer/com.jkhddev.mouemu)
The video posted a bit ago shows the basic process, though I deviated from it to keep the wayfarer style. Here's a link to the lenses I used: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BD9AJQW/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_BUw2tb1W53PWY5RG
Further update. The store is Geoblocked by IP, but that is easily bypassed. The harder part is the payment method geoblocking. It requires a US-issued credit card.
I was looking at EntroPay as a way of getting around this, has anyone used them before?
Yes wipe it out and do it over. Make sure your getting the smallest gapps package pico the bare minimum for play store.
Arm 32bit pico https://opengapps.org
Then only install the root app deleter assistive touch and gboard and see how it works.
Which developers are you getting your root app deleter and Assistive touch from??
You disabled the camera right?? On mine they kept popping up like I pressed the button when I didn’t.
I tried a button remapper and it kind of worked but not really so I just disabled the camera and the button.
Once you get comfortable with that and you start installing the other apps look at the running services and how much ram it uses and manage that and you should be fine.
Also beware of overheating, I had one overheat real bad and now it won’t turn on it boot loops and is never recognized by the computer can’t force it in recovery or bootloader mode.
Yea you have some version 1 or 2
Version 2 made it so you could use different frames
Version 3 is the one with the 2gb ram they sell really high not worth it really
Version 4 is enterprise 1
Version 5 is enterprise 2
If windows isn't detecting it then you're missing the drivers, they can be installed using the Android Development Kit.
If you're not fussed about having the drivers and just want to get files off from Glass then use the Android File Transfer app:
https://www.android.com/filetransfer/
As long as it's compatible with old school Android, probably.
I used one of these with my nexus Q. Same vintage as glass.

Specifically the one I used was this one, I was just lazy and picked the first one to show up on Amazon when replying, figured it should have worked. I was using linux, there may be other driver issues with other OS' I don't know about. But when I got around the problem of a broken recovery, I'm pretty sure I just plugged it into my computer using the fastboot cable, turned it on, and it was recognized.
I actually did get past this by buying a factory fastboot cable off Amazon.
It's possible to build your own, but I didn't want to risk it.
When I rebooted with this cable plugged in, the device registered on fastboot and the process was easy.
maybe something like http://www.amazon.com/YCS-Basics-Cellphone-Charging-Extension/dp/B00B5HSCW0/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1440133791&sr=1-2&keywords=micro+usb+extension could come in handy?
