How big is the hamster's cage? He really needs a bigger cage so he won't get bored and sad. Try this! he'll be so happy with the extra space and you can put in more toys!!
Hamsters along with other rodents have teeth which continue to grow as they age. In the wild there teeth wear down over time from chewing through tough materials, so having teeth that continue to grow is beneficial. However, in captivity this can prove to be quite uncomfortable for the animal if not cared for properly. I recommend you buy your hamster some specialist chew toys for their inclosure.
Perhaps something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Kaytee-Perfect-Chews-for-Hamsters/dp/B0040HFQGM
Instead of a ball (they are disorienting to hamsters and cause a lot of stress) try buying a play pen! I personally bought this one it allows them to roam around without having to be in a ball, plus it’s pretty cheap as well. I bought a smaller size because I have a pretty tiny dwarf hammy, so I would recommend you getting the larger one. I filled it with bedding and mixed in hay, treats and food so my ham can happily dig around in it for a while. Once He’s done I just fold it up and put it away!

Thanks for going through and reading all these bits of advice and tips!! ❤
I got a drawer organizer from target for $7 (basically a big acrylic rectangle) and it made for a GREAT sand bath. For the sand, I got one bag of Reptisand and I still have over 1/2 the bag left and my hamster is now over 2 years old! Just make sure its not dyed or fortified with calcium. Sand baths are the way hamsters keep their coat clean and get the oils off, they also love to dig in it and it helps to file their nails down
SONGMICS Pet Playpen,Fence Cage with Bottom for Small Animals Guinea Pigs, Hamsters, Bunnies, Rabbits https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FQ411ZH/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_F5SZ4JY8WJ5GEA23S07T
So, cleaning was a HUGE hassle, but as you might imagine I didn’t have to a deep clean much because the contained was so big. It’s also modular so I could take it apart and wash each panel if I wanted.
She chewed through the panels a couple times when I had them facing the wrong way (you need the tabs facing in, towards the hammy, so she can’t really get a grip on the bulk of the panel), and she chewed through the bottom once even though I think I had the tabs facing the right way, thus the ruined carpet lol
Hello! I used the SONGMICS Pet Playpen, Fence Cage with Bottom (in White) and instead of using the multi-angle connectors, I used the zip ties that came with the playpen. The panels (a total of 20) come in two sizes (one longer than the other), so I used the long ones for the bottom, and the shorter for the walls of the enclosure.
I had ordered two playpen's from SONGMICS, which I used the majority of when I made his his playpen, and that worked out because one order did not have enough long pieces for how I wanted the enclosure, but if you order one instead of two, if you use the smaller panels, it should work the same.
I then just used the kaytee clean and cozy (unscented) bedding, the niteangel secret peep 2 - Chamber hideout, wooden bridges, paper towel rolls, Niteangel Natural Tunnel Living System (Small Animal house), Niteangel Multi-Chamber House Maze, 9'' Silent Runner Wheel, Containers from Target as I find them (Pumpkin, Witch, Owl) that are big enough for him to fit in (usually they are like $3), a target clear organizer for the sand bath, two Kaytee House Enclosures, one of which is in his sand bath since it doesn't have a bottom (Small and Large), a simple water bottle and a 6 oz ceramic bowl for his food.
The Niteangel Bigger World MDF (large is the only size suitable for a syrian) comes in pink! you could also get a PAX or make a LINNMON then paint it?
EDIT: this is the link for the Niteangel, but don't buy this one since right now they only have small and medium https://www.amazon.com/dp/B088NP8RV2/ref=twister\_B088NRBVH7?th=1
I had that problem with my dwarf hamster too. She was very young and did need some time to get used to the wheel. The main thing that helped was a partially closed wheel.
I believe this cage unfortunately is too small. On Amazon there is a cage called “Prevue Pet Products 528 Universal Small Animal Home, Dark Gray” https://www.amazon.com/Prevue-Pet-Products-528-Universal/dp/B074FH47MQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=prevue+528&qid=1591812847&sprefix=prevue&sr=8-3 This cage is 608 sq in I believe and has a big enough tray to fit the proper amount of bedding into, if you fill it all the way. If it’s too pricey for you, I suggest doing a bit of research on bin cages, as they are cheap and easy, as long as they are of suitable size. Reminder that hamsters need at least 450 sq in of continuous floor space. Hope this helps!
I used to use the Tiny Friend Farms one, but all the Amazon reviews said they changed their formula and it became too dusty. I don't know if that's true because I switched.
Now I get ZooMed Reptisand: https://www.amazon.com/Zoo-Med-ReptiSand-Pounds-Desert/dp/B0002DIZKC/
It's actually cheaper per pound as well. Tiny Friends is ~$3.86/pound, and ReptiSand is ~$1.81/pound
Yes, but it is absurdly expensive for Canada because of shipping, and the wheels are 80+ Canadian dollar/60+ US.
Oh heck no, that dust will just get into your hamster's respiratory tract. The stuff I use is Zoo Med's ReptiSand https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002DJ092/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apan_glt_fabc_7XGWJ3DP56BFM50J9GCG?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 and my little syrian hamster absolutely loves it. It's got a nice texture and it isn't dusty whatsoever and a single bag lasts forever
It looks like this one. So cute, I might need this for my mice 😍
Hmm I was surprised by the glass as well. No ball that I could see to stop the water from coming out. Here’s the link to it on Amazon: IRIS Extra Small Animal and Critter Carrier, Blue https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000VZSSDU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_RRY59PQYDDGMXENHYDN6?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
This one IS NOT BIG at all.
According to the product listing, the pan is 18.5 inches by 11.75 inches - that's barely 217 square inches of floor space! That's not even half the bare minimum of 450 square inches of unbroken floorspace, which is already a very small minimum. Countries like the UK and Germany have way higher minimums, 620 square inches or 700 square inches and more.
He does not need a smaller cage, he is stressed because he already is in a cage that is not suitable for hamsters - it is too small and too shallow. The pan is supposedly 2.75 inches tall, it can not even provide the bedding depth they need to burrow in.
Here are a bunch of examples of suitable hamster cages that won't stress out your beloved pet - all deeper and bigger cages than this contraption he's currently in :(
I got it from Amazon as a add on item, Prevue Pet Products Multi-Color Small Pet Playpen 40090 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003SZSVCI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_2aIrzbMTJ24KW its good already by itself, but I bought 2 of these so I can go in with her :D its really big when you get 2 of the fences I'm 5'3" and I only took about 1/4 of the space there was! Hope that was a good review lol sorry
Nope! I wouldn't do that at all. My vet told me that it has to be pet bathing sand. The dyes in the colored sand or the grain of it may irritate their little hamster skin.
Here are a couple of links to sand options I found on Amazon:
* This is the one I use
* Another option
Child's play sand is one option.
Another popular option is this: https://www.amazon.com/Supreme-Tiny-Friends-Chinchilla-Bathing/dp/B005OCXN1M (I've only ever seen it on Amazon)
If you go the reptile sand route, avoid the calcium/mineral-enriched sand. Locally, I've found that PetCo only has calcium-enriched sands.
But you might be able to find the Reptisand at a PetSmart near you. The website should tell you if it's available near you.
Oh so you can join them together easily? Might have to make that purchase this week too!
Many things sold for hamsters are actually not safe at all, sadly :( Check out the materials I sent you, then check local pet stores or vets to see if they sell any of those. If not, try Amazon: Higgins seed mix is available on the UK one and the German one has the Mazuri blocks
Very cute! Look at that little face!
U should change the wheel, i have this one, works great
Kaytee Large Comfort Exercise Wheel, 8.5-Inch, Colors Vary https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002AS94C/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_dY4vub1E1SZ2N
Not all hamsters are burrowers. My last one wasn't interested in burrowing - he would just curl up in a corner.
I tried SO MANY hideouts with him. The only ones he likes were this ceramic Halloween thing I got for like $2 at Target, and the Niteangel multi-chamber (for Syrians, you need a size large): https://www.amazon.com/Niteangel-6-Chamber-Hamster-House-Maze/dp/B083HXCC3W
They can be really picky about size and material. My first dwarf wouldn't use a hideout if it was too tall (I guess he didn't like a lot of room above his head).

I've heard good things about this
It’s important to keep in mind that hammies have bad eyesight and can’t really see outside of balls. Also- hamster balls are controversial to begin with unfortunately. There isn’t enough ventilation, their feet can get hurt if they get caught in the slits, and they can get very stressed from the lack of control and inability to hide. Here’s more information on the topic:
If you want to let your hamster out without letting them free roam, I recommend something like this:
WWS Ball Pit for Kids / Baby Play Yard / Baby Playpen / Fence for Baby, Folding Portable, No Need Inflate, More Than 12 Sq.ft Play Space, Light Blue https://www.amazon.com/dp/B085TCSBD6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_3HDXHYH12RS9ZH8A5SKS?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
We have one that we use as a playpen for our hamsters and they love it!
one similar to that wheel is the wodent wheel. Suncoast Sugar Gliders Wodent Wheel Senior & Tail Shield - 11" Running Wheel for Small Pets https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MRWR7MQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_D8PVEJYNRSCZB0BTEJAS?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 theres the link.
I have it for my syrian and there’s lots of space for them to run and it’s completely silent. after a couple months it started to squeak a bit but putting baby oil on the gears fixes it quite nicely .
I use Zoo Med Reptisand, which I buy from my local Pet Supplies Plus Store. It's also available on Amazon. Zoo Med brand Reptisand is an all natural terrarium sand with no added dyes/chemicals/calcium. Reptile sand is a great choice for hamster sand baths, but you need to make sure you are only using the calcium-free kind which tends to be less common.
This is the product, it is currently unavailable though.
Here it is on their website, also currently out of stock but they have other cute items: Hollypet Warm Small Pet Animals Bed Guinea Pig Hamster Cotton Mushroom – Hollypet shop
I can't recommend the Silent Spinner brand enough. They have a ball-bearing axle, so they really ARE silent. And they're in most pet stores. Here's the requested Amazon link.
Minor issue: If you have a cage that will hold the twelve-inch model, GET THAT ONE. It will be more comfortable for the larger Syrian. The 6.5" model isn't bad, but I'd prefer at least an 8" wheel so his back won't arch as much.
Wodent Wheel also makes a ball-bearing axled silent wheel that does come in an 8" size, which fits in most fishtank cages, but isn't in any local pet stores in my area. Though since /u/queserasera_ is specifically asking for Amazon links, it's worth mentioning.
I don't have direct experience with the Wodent Wheel brand, but I have friends who love it. I do have direct experience with Silent Spinners, and I love it. They work. Get the largest one that will fit in your cage.
I found it in a bazaar shop in Spain that isn't specialised in pets. It's labelled as a hamsters toilet, so I put some bath sand there, and he seems to love it. I find him quite often sleeping there with a little sand on his head after a tiring digging session.
I've found it on Amazon, but it's much more expensive there, it was less than 3€ where I bought it
Amazon Little Friends Langham Tall Rat and Hamster Cage with Two Floors, 77 x 47 x 58 cm, Silver/ Black https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00OFPLT92/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_soPFyb9590KAG It says it's currently unavailable. I dunno why. I got it on sale. Here the less tall version:Little Friends Grosvenor Rat and Hamster Cage with Wooden Shelf and Ladder, Large, 77 x 47 x 36 cm, Silver/ Black https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00OFPLT60/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_ZpPFyb6YXC07H
I'll take it out then. This sand I got from amazon had great reviews and after looking for so long I thought it would be good, since reviews state it is decent for hamsters of all sizes. Let me know?
His cage is the Prevue Pet 528 Small Animal Home, Dark Gray from Amazon. The tapered bottom of the cage is roughly 29"x16" at approximately 464 square inches at the smallest dimensions. He has tons of space which is why we went with that specific cage. Plus the second level which is an added 170 square inches. Chompy does have a bigger food bowl now!
Hmm, this is the camera that I bought for $20 from Amazon, but it appears that it’s not stocked at the moment. I imagine you can find other cameras with similar features if you search around Amazon or any other site using some of the terms listed on that camera’s page.
I actually had the exact same setup as you, favola cage with the silent runner wheel in the middle. I upgraded to this cage: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074FH47MQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1, it's a little pricier but much bigger, also it has HUGE openings so it's much easier to reach in and pick your hamster up or drop them off :)
You can get the reptisand on amazon. They have a 10lb bag. That’s how I get mine regularly since it’s cheaper than the pet store here.
I agree with PPs that this cage is too small, but I see you have been looking into bin cages which is great! Unbroken floor space is great, rather than platforms or levels.
As for your other questions:
Hammies do like to climb in tubes, but honestly they prefer to burrow, so providing deep bedding will help.
Food: Hammies don't tend to over eat, but they will make stores of food and pouch it. Depending on the breed of hamster you have, you may need to limit certain foods e.g. sugary fruits etc. Check it out.
As I said before, more bedding is better. 1 inch is definitely not enough to burrow in. 30 cm deep is usually recommended, so aim for a bin cage deep enough to accommodate this. At least 5 -6 inches in one area of the cage.
Cotton is a NO-GO for hamsters. It can get caught on their limbs and can cause blockages if eaten. Try kapok wool instead, as it is soft, short fibers. They break easily and are safe for hammies. Alternatively, shredded toilet roll is great; cheap and easy! They enjoy shredding it to make a nest.
Boy vs Girl: For Syrians and Robos, the testicles are quite obvious. It is harder for WWs, Campbells and Hybrids... You need to check for a scent gland. It is easiest to check from underneath when they are lying on clear plastic.
Here's a good guide on how to tame a hamster. It takes lots of time, so have patience! https://www.wikihow.com/Tame-a-Roborovski-Hamster
Good luck with your new floof :)
Use Carefresh Ultra bedding. Change the bedding in the cage weekly, but change the bedding in the area where he sleeps every other day. I also have this product
Hamilton Beach TrueAir Room Odor Eliminator https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002SHCEVG/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_jLLfub1QMGR2B
28$ and works very well. I remove the added air freshener pack and just use the carbon filters it came with.
These PawHut enclosures look good for the price. Just remember you'd need to remove most of the levels so you can fill it with an appropriate amount of bedding, and to ensure your ham doesn't fall, as they're not good with heights.
So I just bought one on amazon.com. I had a $25 USD credit, and so it'll only end up costing me $17 CAD, which is still cheaper than the $18 CAD + tax I paid for the Kaytee on amazon.ca (which I'll promptly return).
Update: i made a change of plans and decided on getting a syrian instead of a dwarf. I went to the video u/chavrilfreak posted and decided on this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08L5MDZRB/. i also am purchasing a playpen because i don't have any hamster proof rooms.
Rule of thumb: make sure their back is horizontally straight when running. You don’t want to see a bend of any kind, which is why the bigger the wheel the better usually. I’d recommend this silent runner on Amazon! wheel
I highly recommend something like these:
Exotic Nutrition Sandy Trimmer Strips | 8 Strips | Size Small | Adhesive Nail Trimming Strips for Pet Exercise Wheels - Ideal for Sugar Gliders https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G9MDDYV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_G1SV95H8K6TNF32NZB9G to put on her wheel!
They worked great for our dwarf and sanded his long nails very quickly. Now, we have a bowl of medium sized river rocks in his enclosure that he LOVES to dig around in. They keep his nails in check without needing the sandpaper anymore
Looks pretty good! Love how you made it match I’m a sucker for aesthetic cages. I’d say more bedding like you mentioned and maybe a multi chamber hide. Niteangel makes good hides for Syrians. this this the one I use. They have other styles with more chambers. The chambers just act like rooms. Also I don’t see a sand bath but correct me if I’m wrong! I’d suggest a sand bath because it helps with keeping them clean, nails trimmed, can be a potty so easy clean up and enrichment. But awesome set up I love it. You must have a happy hammy!
This is the best hamster cage money can buy. A bit expensive, but if you don't have time to DIY and need something quick from Amazon this is absolutely it. Huge, easy to clean, many hamster owners love it including me.

No I got her a water bottle by Niteangel: Niteangel Water Bottle with Stand for Small pet Rodents https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0878XS9FN/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_KF8W4CCZPPYG6FJHD7Y6?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I actually got her an 8in wheel from the same brand. But she’s too small to make it move. I ordered her a flying saucer till she grows a little bigger and can use her wheel 🐹
No, it was actually this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08JP8KP1B?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
This particular one is out of stock, but check out their Amazon store to see their other products
Epic. And as far as chews go, I have 2 suggestions, but really anything made of wood that doesn't use harsh dyes is fine.
One of them is just a hanging chew that has multiple chews on it, and the metal hook is removable by unscrewing, so it can totally be used in a bin cage. I found that in I believe a PetSmart or Petco.
The other is just a 10 or 12 piece pack that you can find on amazon. They come with a bunch of different kinds of safe chews, and the only piece that I don't use in the whole pack is a swing, but that's because my hamster tries to chew the metal chains, but other than that it's all wood.
Amazon chew pack that I have purchased: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08CGQFGCL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_5WN4XHCAFQRR01Y5RPHQ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Found the hanging chew on amazon as well: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DHH0AV2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_WWWJR67HQGJ54WX4MYAD
If you don’t want to sanitize and don’t mind spending a little extra, reptisand works well. But it has to be that brand, others have calcium added
I actually bought the sandbox! It’s by Niteangel and you can buy it on Amazon :) https://www.amazon.com/Niteangel-Small-Animal-Sand-Bath-Box/dp/B08FJDKV4T/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=niteangel%2Bsand%2Bbath&qid=1620784948&sprefix=niteangel%2Bsand%2B&sr=8-3&th=1&psc=1
They arent ferplast tubes bc ferplast seem impossible to find right now, but these tubes fit the ferplast connectors perfectly and are the same dimensions.

Good point on dimensions. Ours is this big one from amazon. Look like it's just over 600 sq. in. I think I remember reading about some other recommendations like you said so went with this one just in case.
I'll tell her about seeds.
Bath idea sounds great. She can easily lure her into a little transporting container, she's done that for cleaning the cage. So I think bath might be doable.
Thanks for all the advice! That's a great start.
Hello, this is my hamster Pebbles . Her previous owners had her in a critter trail cage and I recently had bought and upgraded her cage for her which meets all the requirements for her . Recently she has started biting the cage and it honestly worry’s me a much I try not to get emotional and start crying when I hear and see her doing this it is so hard and I don’t know what to do/ how to fix it. I try to do as much research but honestly I really need help. The cage is 31.5 x 20 x 20 inches and the link to it is Savic Hamster Heaven Metro Cage https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003QRPAR2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_J4M6FbR4Z933F
I bought a heat wand that’s intended for affixing crystals, but it’s an amazing tool to make the perfect holes in your bin cage too without needing a drill. I’ve made holes for the water bottle, wheel, shelves, etc. heat wand
I bet this would work: https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Cube-Storage-Shelves-Black/dp/B0735CKD6R/
At 14", each wall of the cubes might fall a TINY bit short - but if that happens, just put one of these plastic connectors on it, and that will give it enough length.
It's 15" across on a Detolf, but it has those silver metal pieces inside that make the actual distance across shorter.
Thanks! ❤️ they say this doesn’t fit for Syrians but it fits perfectly and there’s a lot of room.

Idk if you have a Syrian (this wheel is only approximately sized for dwarfs) but I adore this one. It doesn’t have a stand, but it was incredibly simple to mount and literally silent.
If you look at different colors they may sell them with stands or in larger sizes, this is just the link I have Link
Yes, i do think it was caused by that the bedding that i recommend is paper based bedding here's a link: https://www.amazon.com/Kaytee-Clean-White-Animal-Bedding/dp/B00U7LCKZ0/ref=sr_1_2?crid=33LUIQKOOEHHC&dchild=1&keywords=kaytee+clean+and+cozy+bedding&qid=1607392783&sprefix=kaytee%2Caps%2C221&sr=8-2 again sorry for your loss hope this helps.
This is my favorite bedding. No bedding will not really stick, but this one is paper strips that are similar sizes instead of dusty clumps like Carefresh.
this is what i use: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B082B2RGL5
i threw away all the hardware and just keep the squares and linked them together with zip ties. it's 12" tall and 26 feet in total. no wires for the hamster to scale.
What really matters is the floor space. Two 40 gallon tanks could have very different floor space (e.g. one might be taller and another wider).
Do you live near an Ikea? The Detolf is popular not only because it has over 1,000 inches of floor space, but because it's also only like $70.
Then a few people have used this as a "tank" (I think it needs a couple small modifications) @ $45: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FQ411ZH/
And now is the time of year that you can sometimes find huge, clear bins for Christmas tree storage (like this one: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Organize-it-65-Gal-Holiday-Tree-Storage-Bin-in-Clear-Base-and-Red-Cover-ST53221501/206346063#product-overview)
Unfortunately, those are getting harder to find. It looks like most Christmas tree storage containers are now bags.
(If you're outside the U.S., you might have more or less options, depending.)
Plastikote is the most common! It's inexpensive, clear, dries very quickly, and has no smell. I've used it on many hamster bits and I'm very happy with it - the only issue is that the jars are very small. One will be enough to coat a single wheel, but if you're like me and keep buying a million accessories that need coating, it starts to get annoying :) Also, make sure you thoroughly wash your brush after you use it - Plastokote is water-soluble while still wet, so it will wash out easily, but if you let it dry on the brush all the bristles will get stuck solid :)
Rodipet also sell Auro Varnish, which I've also been quite happy with! The can lasts a lot longer than plastikote, and overall it's probably better value for money. It takes a lot longer to dry though, and has a bit of a smell, so you should ideally wait a few days after coating before putting things in the cage. It will also stain the wood to look darker and a bit yellowish - I think it looks kind of nice, but it's down to personal preference I guess :)
And when you get a wheel, make sure it’s not from petco.. the best wheels I’d say is this that I got from Amazon. It’s really quiet and doesn’t bend their backs. Niteangel Super-Silent Hamster Exercise Wheels - Quiet Spinner Hamster Running Wheels with Adjustable Stand for Hamsters Gerbils Mice Or Other Small Animals https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08FC8B6RP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabt1_wPHTFb1TEYQ6F?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
For the Syrian and your other hamster get a size medium.
Just to note this is the US minimum, and a lot of people in the UK and Europe recommend 650sq in, or at least 80*50. This one isn’t far off but it looks like it tapers towards the base, so might feel smaller unless the bedding is kept deep.
For the same price you can get a large zoozone which is 100*50:
Zoozone Habitat, Large, Blue https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002USE0JM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabt1_9FASFbQ97EG0E?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
i’m sorry! i should’ve considered that! but two of these doesn’t create a large enough floor space since they need unobstructed space to run around. this cage is my dream cage available in the UK and although its a bit pricey i would love it :( the shipping is too expensive to the states though https://www.amazon.com/Living-World-Moving-Habitat-Medium/dp/B00E1XWJ2O
most likely not 😔 the only commercially sold hamster cage that I've seen that meets the 450+ sq inch minimum is the Prevue 528
I bought it at a local Pet Supplies Plus, but it's also available here on Amazon for about the same price :)
Hello! I don't post a lot but I spent a long time looking for the most appropriate wheel for my hammy, so wanted to share what I found:
My hammy is currently using the Trixie exercise wheel (28cm) which he absolutely loves, it's not silent but the only sounds are his feet pattering and the wheel rocking slightly on its stand. You can fix the wheel to the bars of a cage if you prefer which would probably eliminate this noise. Link on Amazon UK.
When he was younger we used a 6.5 inch Kaytee silent spinner which was fantastic, but he quickly outgrew it. They do a 12 inch one so if you have a large enough home for your hammy then that's also a possibility. Hope that helps a little!
Hi, generally 12” wheels are best for Syrians. If he is having to arch his back whilst running on it then it is too small for him, I have a Syrian and just purchased a 10” silent wheel for her and that seems to be perfectly fine. Recommended size is 12 inch but honestly depends on the size of your Syrian, but maybe go for slightly bigger just to be sure. I bought mine off of amazon, can’t find the exact one but this is pretty similar and is big.
As for cage sizes, 80cm wide x 50cm deep x 35 cm high technically is the minimum cage size. Atm I have a large cafe from pets at home for my hamster which is a good size however soon I’m planning on getting her a bin cage, which I’ve read are really good for them. They’re fairly cheap as well, literally just clear storage boxes but you’d have to look into them more.
Failing that, buying a large rat cage should be okay as well. :)
As for ball sizes, I don’t have a ball for mine as they can be very bad for them if you let them run around in it in supervised as they have poor eyesight and their feet can get caught in the gaps of it. So I would be careful with them. However if you are only using them for a short amount of time in a supervised environment, making sure there is no risk of him hurting himself then 12 inch should be fine too. (However may want to fact check that size as I’m not 100% certain what the requirement is, but 12” should be fine)
I have a big tub of that (it came along with my ham). I've used it before in a pinch as litter tray sand when I'm out of the normal sand.
However, you want to avoid dust because it can cause respiratory distress (same way that a person in a very dusty environment is going to start sneezing).
If you need to use it in a pinch, place it in a tray/bowl or something out in the open so that the dust can disperse -- not in a covered "sand bath house" or whatever.
So it's not like your hamster will drop dead from it or anything, but it's not something you want to use regularly.
Better alternatives are children's play sand (you can buy a huge bag for like $3 from most hardware stores), Supreme Tiny Friends Bathing Sand (available off Amazon), or Reptisand (available from PetSmart. I saw someone recommend it earlier today. You want to avoid reptile sands with added calcium or other added minerals).
We found it in a pet shop here in Sweden! But here's the listing on amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Trixie-Joy-Indoor-Run-Elements/dp/B000V9KIU2
We bought two of these tho so she gets more space! Keep in mind tho that you need to babysit the hamster as we had one hamster before that could climb over (our current one doesn't do that tho!)
I got it from the pet shop, but I just found out they sell it on Amazon too! https://www.amazon.com/Trixie-Natural-Playing-30x30x10-Centimetres/dp/B0057G0MZU/ref=mp_s_a_1_14?keywords=trixie+rodent&qid=1574625686&sr=8-14

Is there any way you can share a picture of the cage? It's hard to know how to help without a good picture.
If his coat is oily, you should definitely add a sand bath. The best sand you can get him is ReptiSand. Sand is how hamsters bathe and will likely help that oily coat. It might not do much for enrichment though.
The only thing I can suggest is upgrade their cage (I can link a $20 bin from Walmart if you're in the US if you want). Make sure there's at least 6 inches of bedding, an appropriately sized wheel (8 inch for dwarf, over 10 inch for syrian). It sounds like you have plenty of toys and overall a good enclosure.
Sometimes hamsters just get tired of their enclosure. You could move some things around so he can explore again. If that doesn't help, I think the only thing you can do is get a bigger enclosure.
Hope that helps!
You can also use this - my hammies love this “tube” Niteangel Natural Wooden Hamster Mouse Tunnel Tube Toy Forest Hollow Tree Trunk https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OW44P56/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ajdyFb685AAYV
Make sure the inset is easy and inexpensive to remove and replace. I've done some some quarter inch acrylic setups, and they're very nice. It would suck to lose one because the floor became too obscene to clean.
What are you doing for ventilation? I only ask because after years of trying to deal with either drilling my own holes or attaching wire mesh without anyone getting cut, I decided I liked installing pre-fabricated vents better. Something like these
My mom got it for me as a gift off amazon! Thanks a lot :)
It’s this: Niteangel Natural Living Tunnel System, Small Animal House https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OW6ZO9U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_1WwAEbJ86ED7N
Here's the one I have https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00365P9NY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_LasNCbFC8RC92 I've never had a wooden wheel so I can't help you there unfortunately but I'm sure as long as it's big enough it will be fine ☺
Completely moderate feedback with the understanding that this was a "surprise" pet and perhaps one you were not adequately prepared for:
Her cage is better than most hamsters. That being said, most hamsters are HORRIBLY housed.
Climbing on the bars (and biting/chewing them) is a sign of distress.
She doesn't have enough space to run, and doesn't have enough room to burrow. She should have WAY MORE bedding. Hamsters are tunneling animals.
She could use more chews, and more hideaways, and a bigger wheel. If you do this, you'll see less of her, but she'll be much happier. She could really use a cage upgrade.
I recommend this cage. It's less expensive than the preferred NiteAngel brand, over 600 sq. inches of space, and allows for 8-10 inches of bedding for burrowing. These kinds of habitats can be REALLY fun to decorate. With Christmas coming up, please consider buying a new cage and asking for fun hamster decorations. You can make beautiful habitats in these kinds of cages.
If you can't do this, so be it, but when Joy passes, please dispose of the cage and don't get another hamster until you can invest in a better set-up. These kinds of cages make hamsters unhappy, and the climbing/bar biting behavior really does indicate a degree of stress from being unable to run and burrow normally.
If you absolutely can't get a new habitat, consider investing in a "playpen" to give Joy some environment enrichment. You can search the sub for info about this; some people get their hamsters playpens to run around in large areas and explore and move bedding and tunnel as they would in nature. I'm sure if you made a post asking for help in this, people would gladly give you more info! :)
If you use a hamster ball, throw it out immediately. Hamsters don't actually like balls.
I also have this one in the other cage, but you have to make sure it's level. I check them both by tapping the ball at the end with my finger and see if it gets wet.

I have this style of cage (though not this brand) for one of my hamsters. It's fantastic. My hamster has never been able to "break out" and it's perfectly sturdy. I will say that mine has a different kind of ventilation on the top AND vents over the acrylic panes, and it's weird to me that this version lacks vents on the sides.
Depends on your budget~ Female syrians are quite hard to please..
If! you have the money a glass tank around 120x80cm; the bigger the better. You could even combine some smaller ones by removing one side each with a knife and combine with new silikone. You might get lucky and find used ones quite cheap.
I would recommend a diy based on the 100x200cm PAX: https://www.ikea.com/de/de/p/pax-korpus-kleiderschrank-weiss-20214566/ If you have the space and are able to diy something on top so she can‘t bescape.
The Living-World-Green Habitat (ideally in „Large“) is also a great size and without diy-ing ;) https://www.amazon.de/Living-World-Green-Habitat-Kleintierwohnheim/dp/B00E1XWJ2O
One of these would be (in my eyes) ideal- means not the minimum. Just a recommendation!
Good luck with your hammy :3
I really wanna recommend getting storage grids instead of play pens bc I have a female Syrian too and I kid you not, she climbed her way out of the first one so then I got one with a top with a zipper opening and then SHE CHEWED HER WAY OUT… so now I’m going to get these storage grids!
Ikr!! & that’s awesome!!! My hammy has a field day with the moss hahaha (,:
I use this moss (here’s the link on Amazon if you’re interested since it’s the largest bag I found to be cheapest!) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KZDT346/ref=sspa_mw_detail_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2VKQ467V9VAGE&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9waG9uZV9kZXRhaWw
Also, Chewy.com is having a sale for this where you can buy 2 & get the 3rd free! I honestly think I only used all of this bag and another smaller (but still big) bag from petco but just wanted to lyk as I think I’m gonna stock up on it! It’s great tho bc it can spread out pretty nicely!
Hope you have sm fun with hamsterscaping!! I’m sure your hammy will love it’s vista sm and really appreciate your love & care!! ((: ♡ great word you used btw!! Love that!
Chewy carries it! They have free 1-3 day shipping if you spend $50, I get a lot from there and most stuff comes overnight. They have a 25-lb bag that will get you free shipping.
60X40X44,5 cm are the measurements (https://www.amazon.com.be/-/en/axentia-Storage-stackable-transparent-dimensions/dp/B005YVBVGM/ref=asc_df_B005YVBVGM/?tag=begogshpadsp-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=633297661671&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=10489301799813642834&hvpone=&a...) that the one
I have a whole bunch of these little foldable gate things and make huge play pens out of them (def need more than one set) over a sheet and fill it with tube configurations and toys that I rearrange all the time. Really good play time can help make cage time easier.
Have you tried beech chips? Not sure where you're located, I bought these ones off amazon in the UK. Just put some in a container and hide some bits of food in there, it kept my hamster busy for a while. I also cut nice soft tissues into strips and leave them around my hamsters cage, he collects them up and uses them to make his nest cosy.
There was a study done where hamsters were placed in increasingly large cage sizes. The largest was 1550 sq inches (10 000 sq cm). Even at 1550 sq inches, hamsters still engaged in bar biting although not as frequently as hamsters in smaller cage sizes.
Quote: "Stereotypic wire-gnawing was observed in all cage sizes, but hamsters in small cages gnawed significantly longer and more frequently."
If it’s what I’m thinking they make clips for the tops.
I think a dwarf hamster could definitely be happy in a medium sized Niteangel. Before getting my Syrian, I was considering getting a dwarf hamster. I asked around on the Hamster Central forum about if a dwarf hamster would be happy in a cage the size of the Niteangel Vista. Some people commented that a dwarf hamster may be overwhelmed with that much space, unless it was extremely cluttered. So it's hard to say.
I just got a male hybrid dwarf last week. He's in a 600 square inch cage currently. If he shows signs of stress, I plan to buy another Niteangel cage, probably the medium. But so far, he seems extremely happy. No signs of stress or trying to escape. I have heard dwarf hamsters are much more forgiving of cage size, unlike female Syrians...
I see the large size of the Bigger World cage is available, with 1 left in stock.
I think its is /slightly/ smaller than the Vista. But it's still a huge cage for $60 less than the Vista.
So cute :3

Mesh wheels can cause 'bumblefoot' over time and it's very painful, and crossbars can cause accidents. I'd highly reccomend getting a different, larger wheel. :) 10-12 inch or 25-30cm is a good size for syrians.
