Inspired by the Riven images upscaling by /u/kingdomakrilic (see the post on r/GameUpscale) and the people recently applying the same approach to many games, I've done a test with Myst III images. In the past I did some tests with waifu2x and letsenhance.io but the results were only marginally better.
This time the quality is significantly improved, at 4x the initial size (640px->1560px)! To keep things simple, I've started by using some existing upscaling software (Topaz Labs AI Gigapixel) which already give satisfying results out of the box. I guess that compared to Riven images, Exile images are more realistic and have much less dithering, so their statistics are closer to real world images, on which the Topaz tech was trained. If I encounter strong artifacts I'll move to ESRGAN/SRTGAN and maybe retraining.
I'll keep updating the post with additional images from the other Ages.
Probably not best to buy the first "realMyst." That one had some advantages over the more recent "realMyst Masterpiece Edition," but the old realMyst isn't supported anymore, so you'd be on your own getting it to play.
So between "Myst: Masterpiece Edition" (the original, pre-rendered slideshow version of the game) and "realMyst: Masterpiece Edition" (the current, HD realtime 3D version). Setting aside any issues you might have running the game on your computer, it's a matter of personal preference whether you'd go with the classic experience or the updated experience.
My gut says, get the original (Myst: Masterpiece Edition), since that's the version that made the game famous, and playing the original slideshow-style version really helps you appreciate the context of how special the game was in its own time.
If you're a point-and-click fan you're probably familiar with ScummVM? http://www.scummvm.org/ Myst Masterpiece Edition can run in ScummVM, so that'll save you a lot of compatibility headaches. The GoG.com version already comes wrapped in ScummVM, but you should be able to use it for the Steam version just as well.
They are copies of the originals.
Here are the system requirements of RealMyst Masterpiece: https://store.steampowered.com/app/244430/realMyst_Masterpiece_Edition/ If you can run that you’ll be able to run them all. As long as you have a Mac from 2011 or newer you’ll be fine.

To take screenshots from Direct3D games, you need special software, e.g. Fraps.
It might not be the game's fault. Your graphics card or some other system component could be unstable. FurMark is a stress test that can be used to check stability. If you graphical artifacts or crashes there, too, then the problem is hardware-related.
Monument Valley is a good mindbender, although it's mainly MC Escher style puzzles which are not that hard once you wrap your brain around them.
The Room series was very good, but if you found the third one easy, the other two are most likely not what you are looking for.
I could also just post here for anyone techily inclined to enjoy as well. it's considered abandonware and available legally for free on multiple retro programming sites and mac collector pages nowadays, but still needs either an emulator of the appropriate mac os or an older system and some fiddling to get up and running.
the Internet Archive project also has an entire section of old stacks, emulators for it and various mac OSes to run it on as well on their site, some of which that can be run in a browser window to casually putter around with for fun. here's a good article listing multiple sources, (its a little amusing that the comments section at the bottom of it is full of Myst love too.)

I've solved the mystery (pun absolutely intended). It turns out that the Lutris GOG installer for Riven uses Lutris's^(Lutris'?) own SCUMMVM, which has trouble playing the audio. I installed my own scummvm in the system and it worked flawlessly.
This was a dumb question and the solution so simple it hadn't occurred to me. Big thanks to both of you for pointing me in the right direction!
It's hosted by CNET so I'm going to assume it doesn't count as breaking Reddit's rules:

You have to have the Riven disk image mounted the first time you run it, but after that it runs as a self executable.
>Sadly the version of realMyst with the most coherent art direction is still the original, which you can’t even purchase any more.
Agreed. It's especially frustrating, because both Steam and GOG.com have great Windows 10-functional versions of realMyst 2000, with valid store listings and installers and everything working properly.
But Cyan pulled the store listings down. So newcomers can't buy the best version anymore, even though all of the work on them is finished and live.
That's pretty cool. I might try running it in DOSBox (since I do own the original Myst and I have set up Win3.1 in DOSBox to play other games). Might be a good nostalgic experience to see the 8-bit version of the game again after all these years.
Have you at least ripped the CD and mounting it with IMGMOUNT? (Rather than actually playing it off the original CD.)
Instead of Audio Hijack, you could also use Loopback (https://rogueamoeba.com/loopback/) in your setup, to route the audio into QuickTime Player. Then you wouldn't need the sync & mux after the fact - the recording would have your desired audio.
Here you go. Sorry about the lack of comments. This was written in AutoIT which is quite similar to VBScript.
Ah! That's Art & Arcana. I thought it fit the theme. :)

Sounds suspiciously like the main character in this novel...
There is also a remake for Android if you want to play on your phone or your tablet :) realMyst https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.noodlecake.realmyst - don't know if is the best/origial Myst experience but is nice
A while back I bought this game on amazon. It's very Riven-like. I haven't finished it, but its got some pretty interesting puzzles, and exploring the environment for the first time gives me the same feelings that I got when I played the Myst games. If you're like me, and Riven is your favorite in the series, you may like these too.
