TL;DR, It stayed with him. If you read James Bradley's 'Flyboy's' you know exactly how Bush felt about it....it stayed with him for the rest of his life.
"He recalled that while on the submarine he asked himself why he had survived. "Why had I been spared and what did God have in store for me? In my own view there's got to be some kind of destiny and I was being spared for something on Earth." Earlier he had told Mr Bradley: "I think about those guys all the time."
Good. MCPON West was a crooked motherfucker when he started that shit.
Don't believe me? Rick West retired and, 2 months later, went on to become VP of Herdt Consulting, Inc. Herdt, coincidentally, was the consulting firm the Navy awarded the ERB Transition Assistance contract to.
Fuck that guy.
EDIT: Also note that there is no description of what he did while at Herdt on his LinkedIn profile. I wonder why.

Saphir Polish in a range of colors is about $18 USD and the cotton rag looks to be about $20 but I think you get a bunch of them.
The stuff he is using in the video looks to actually be the shoe polish, (the wax listed on the website is in a glass jar, not a tin cup), but the high shine wax (glass jar) looks to be $30.
Disclaimer: I am not a sponsor of this, I was polishing my shoes today and was sitting at computer and was watching youtube vids and found this guy. ..if he's world champion of shoe shining, I figure he knows a thing or two about it lmao
EDIT: Video youtube comments confirm its the Saphir brand wax (polish in the tin can, just like the kiwi brand)
and that bottle is called a water spritzer, ..edit: nevermind- found it.. it's called a one touch pump dispenser ($7.99) https://www.amazon.com/Touch-Pump-Dispenser-Bottle-Flip/dp/B00GOI6MAE
Wally world/Walmart has spray bottles (small travel bottles) for like $1-2 that can do the same thing though)
If any of you want to read a sailor from the 1800s bitch and moan I highly recommend White Jacket by Herman Melville, author of Moby Dick. Since it's old enough it's available for free on Project Gutenberg here!
My overtime pay alone is more than my E-6 base pay was.
I also made E-6 in 4 years. ET1 was @ 13% when I picked up first, and that was the highest quota I advanced on (it was ~7% when I picked up second).
The Navy is a fucking joke, precisely because of people like you.
Very few people with real talent stay in.
Someone even wrote an entire book about it:
https://www.amazon.com/Bleeding-Talent-Military-Mismanages-Revolution/dp/0230391273
Now I work in medical device R&D and build robots.
There are zero things in my life now that aren't better than when I was in the Navy. I've even got a sense of purpose, since the work I do saves thousands of lives every year.
Sure a hell of a lot better than sucking a paycheck from the government, while bitching about how fucked up the government is.
Keep fucking off in a naval hospital all day spewing vitriol though. You're sure doing a lot of good in the world (using the stuff I build no less).
Oh wait, Naval medicine is shit.
Not only are you on welfare, you're not even very good at it.

If you have at least a microwave in your barracks, you can do a lot with just that. I have this "Microwave Rice Cooker" that I got at the nex which was basically a bowl with feet and layered lids to trap steam. It makes rice, pasta, hard boiled eggs etc - basically anything you can do with a hot pot of water. I still use it even now that I'm out of barracks if I'm in a hurry because it's faster than cooking on the stovetop. $12 on Amazon.

Some are of dumbass boots wanting attention, some are dumbass senior NCOs and some are delusional Officers. Seems they got the mix of miltary life down well
Oddly enough, recommended treatment for E. coli is simply rest and to stay hydrated. "Drink more water" (the other Navy cure-all) is actually right in this case!
If only there was a military officer, preferably a senior one - maybe even a Navy Captain, that could write a book on how to take a historically low performing team and turn it into the greatest of all time...

But that never happens.
It's probably not all that close to the airframe limits. The NOAA WP-3D aircraft (Ms. Piggy and Kermit) were specially modified to have stronger airframes than an average P-3C. It'd be pretty dangerous in most other aircraft, but less so in these ones.
If I were flying in this situation, my biggest concern would be unexpectedly severe meteorological phenomena (i.e. hail or lightning or really severe turbulence that can cause a flame out). It's not super likely given all the wx radars and experts they have onboard plotting their course through the storm, but there have been incidents in the past. Safety procedures have come a long ways since Joseph Duckworth got dared to go through one back in the 40s.

If you're concerned about verification feel free to get a Pg. 13 to verify that you've qualified for each of your tattoos, since people care about your tattoos but not about the double E's on your ribbon rack, apparently.
Kind of hard to see the details from the angle in that first pic, but the giant 8 ball is pretty distinctive.
Looks like Submarine Squadron 8. (link to the patch on Amazon)

Definitely recommend Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, the Roman emperor and stoic philosopher. I personally use the Gregory Hays translation but there are many. Mattis carried it into Iraq and on various deployments.
All those traditions ascribed to tattoos are civilian, not Navy....so it's perfectly acceptable for a civilian to tattoo themselves without any of you getting bent out of shape (if you are, you really need to evaluate your life and learn to embrace the "who gives a fuck" lifestyle). The traditions were appropriated around WWII into the Navy.
Tattooing in the old Navy existed mainly as a method to permanently mark yourself so your body could be ID'ed if you were killed.
If you are bored and want to learn what traditional Navy tattoos were, make an account and start going through these online rendezvous returns. The Navy started to record physical descriptions of enlisting/reenlisting sailors, including describing tattoos, in the summer of 1863 onward https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/1825347 FYI, you are not going to find anyone listed with hold fast on their knuckles or pigs/roosters/crosses on their feet.
I would keep everything all these people are suggesting, but I would keep in a fire proof safe. Something similiar to this. You can pick up inexpensive ones from Walmart or amazon for under $50.
In addition to all your Navy stuff you can keep wills, titles, SSN cards, birth certs, and whatever else you don't want to keep in a bank security box.
Allow me to put a few quotes from one of Cal Newport's book So Good They Can't Ignore You.
“In the movies there’s this idea that you should just go for your dream,” [Ira] Glass tells them. “But I don’t believe that. Things happen in stages.” Glass emphasizes that it takes time to get good at anything, recounting the many years it took him to master radio to the point where he had interesting options. “The key thing is to force yourself through the work, force the skills to come; that’s the hardest phase,” he says. Noticing the stricken faces of his interviewers, who were perhaps hoping to hear something more uplifting than work is hard, so suck it up, Glass continues: “I feel like your problem is that you’re trying to judge all things in the abstract before you do them. That’s your tragic mistake.”
In other words, tough it out. You might be surprised. Things will change. If you're thinking of going in a different direction, do a trial first in your off-duty times; take a "little bet":
"The important thing about little bets is that they’re bite-sized. You try one. It takes a few months at most. It either succeeds or fails, but either way you get important feedback to guide your next steps.”
Take a few classes a local college or vocational school, do an internship, maybe take a year out of the Navy and see if you can get another career going. You don't know until you go.
Finally, “Passion comes after you put in the hard work to become excellent at something valuable, not before. In other words, what you do for a living is much less important than how you do it.”
Best of luck.
Why lease over just outright buying it?

Well, converting more and more oil tankers to support ships/troop carriers/helicopter carriers could be a start.
It's cheap, for one thing.

The US Navy calls it the Arabian Gulf.
When transiting the Strait of Hormuz, we're a lot closer than 30 miles.
There's been tensions between our two nations since 1979.
The Navy regularly practices freedom of navigation operations when another country makes a claim to extend their maritime boundaries. To not do so might imply that the US recognizes the validity of the claim.
Dan Rather did a piece in 2012 (Dan Rather Reports: A Dire Strait) that highlights the tension of a carrier strike group as it transits the Strait of Hormuz. It's available on iTunes and VUDU
The edges of the soles are a super pain in the ass because they’re made of that hard foam rubber that sucks in dirt. In my experience, the only way to get rid of those stains is by using white edge dressing and “painting” over the dirt. Not the ideal fix, but unfortunately the only way to do it without buying new shoes.

Female sailor here, I found this bluetooth sleepmask to be a fucking lifesaver on all kinds of deployments.
Anything to do with audio and entertainment e.g. noise-canceling headphones, a small portable bluetooth speaker, hard drive loaded up with shows and movies and music (or pdfs of books if that's her jam). A reading light that clips/attaches to the bunk. High quality polarized sunglasses. A fuzzy blanket (seriously, just feels like home to have a blanket that someone you love gave to you). 6 tubes of her favorite lip balm.
idk if everyone here is joking about the sex toys, but she probably has her own that she chose and prefers (and I'm sure you already know that). Plus my married best friend who is also currently deployed told me it kind of stressed her out to get sexual gifts from the husband right before going out to sea - just seemed to emphasize that he was thinking/paranoid about 1) not having sex with her and 2) her being horny around other sailors. It's really not a chill gift imo
I use ExpressVPN - be aware netflix has some top notch VPN detection software which has been blocking a bunch of VPN services so do some research and invest in one which specialises in getting around netflix.
Welcome to the MCM community! What is your rate? The term choose your rate choose your fate really comes to terms on sweeps, if you are an Engineer prepare to work late and often at least until you get the ship where you want it and then its easy sailing just keep up with maintenance and you will be good. What Crew are you going to I have a fireman right now who is going to Crew Conflict (MCM's are divided by crew names). I was on Crew Exultant and Crew Bulwark now I am on a IA crew Olympian. As far as Bahrain goes there is stuff to do Go karts, Mall, Water Park, you can even take a flight to Dubai and have fun there. Restaurants they are every where from American fast food to local cuisine and just about everyone delivers yo your door. the base NSA Bahrain is good lots of MWR events so check the board they also have a new movie theater on base which is cheap. If you are here and have no kids keep it that way it would be easier because we do have high op tempos and it going to suck if your wife is here by herself raising a kid. As for places to live there are Flats everywhere and they are pretty cheap and most come with WIFI if not you have 2 choices for internet and phone/tv Zain and Batelco both are good companies and offer good rates to the states. You do need a VPN to use Hulu or Netflix or want to see some rack movies i suggest Private Internet Access its 5 bucks a month and they are reliable. Stay out of Black Flag areas just stick to public areas like American Alley (right in front of Base) and the malls and MWR events. You will get a area brief when you arrive and you will be given areas which are off limits. Don't sweat it its not bad here and your wife will be here just Google Bahrain laws and follow them and be mindful of Ramadan out here they take it very seriously. Any other questions pm me and HAVE FUN out here make the best out of every situation.
Sign up for T-GPS now! Two years away from separation is the perfect time to do your first T-GPS class.
If you are looking for a job with the FAA or in Aeronautical Aviation they are both very competitive job fields. I suggest doing a job search right now for the positions that you'd like to fill. Look at what qualification you will need for those jobs and start working on getting those qualification.
For example; looking at O*Net Online I see that Avionics Technician is one area for you to look. Plug that job title in to a job search website then pull up a couple of jobs that interest you. Look at the qualifications area of the job advertisement. Do that on a bunch of job search websites for a bunch of job advertisement until you get an idea of what employers are looking for.
A carrier is literally about the safest place on planet Earth if you don't include occupational type accidents. Flight decks can be dangerous places. If he's not working the flight deck, you're more likely to get wiped out In the next 6+ months than he is.
I'd be more worried about him getting hospitalized by bad food before I worried about an attack.
Lol @ whoever said you shouldn't pay off a mortgage to have a tax write off.
If you have extra cash the best thing you can ever do is invest it in dividend paying stocks. Then reinvest the earnings. This is how you make money, with money.
If you have some time, and are willing to do a bit of research on yields, go for the market. To take this one step further, there is an app called Robinhood (https://robinhood.com/) that offers FREE trading.
good luck to you
It can't go below the collar. (if wearing the dress white jumper it can't extend more than 1 ¼" below the top of the jumper collar). If you bunch the hair up you can kind of get a ponytail holder around it...and then you've got this pony-tail that's about 2" long. With a LOT of gel and the maximum allowable number of clips (two) and a ton of bobby pins...you can tuck your hair up into a bun. After a few hours of good solid work, though, you end up looking like this.
I've found that once my hair is about armpit length I can put it up in a solid bun that won't go anywhere, just by twisting it around the ponytail and securing it with bands.
Between the "barely touching my collar" and armpit stage I am a fan of the sock method

Comes in a roll so you can cut them to custom length.
Also of note, using a piece of cardboard and some eb red you can make a small shelf for your stuff, make a door out of more tape and use the Velcro strips to make it closeable so shit doesn't fly out.
I read most of this in A School, but never finished it.
Another really good one is, Ship of Ghosts. Couldn't put it down.
I bought this one from Amazon
To be honest, I don’t think I had to do anything else after trying this reader. I had gone through every step listed on the Military CAC site prior to ordering this new reader though, so maybe something I had already done had helped. This reader has worked for me on both Chrome and Safari so far.

I'm joking at your expense. But seriously, knowing how to sew and mend your clothes is a skill every person should have. Especially in the military. Home Ec was probably the most useful elective I took in school.
You've been given lots of good subs but I think you should visit r/financialindependence. Mr BGW and I subscribe to the FIRE (Financially Independent : Retired Early) mindset.
We did the math and a Navy retirement paycheck at E6, E7 is around 2,000 a month.
House payments and other concerns mean most people who retire from the Navy can't survive on that paycheck. It's very wise to invest or save in other programs in addition to the Navy retirement.
The biggest difference for us between the TSP and outside savings programs (IRA, mutual funds, stocks, property) is being able to access it immediately upon retirement from the Navy. If I can't touch my money at 39 years old without being penalized it's useless to me.
Go to Navy Fed or call USAA and ask to speak with a financial advisor to see what some of your options are.
I also suggest picking up some books: Rich Dad Poor Dad, anything by Dave Ramsey, the Science of Getting Rich, or The Millionaire Next Door. Audiobooks are great if you can't focus on the dry reading that is financial books :)
Yes! The USS VANDEGRIFT (FFG-48) had a Shiba Inu onboard named Seaman Jenna!
USS Samuel B Robert (DE-413), known as "the destroyer that fought like a battleship" had a beagle mascot named "Sammy".
>Leaving the sinking destroyer escort proved difficult for many sailors, even those not suffering wounds or burns. The majority of the crew abandoned ship on the less damaged starboard side. The dog Sammy, Samuel B. Roberts’s small mascot, had run terrified around the decks throughout the battle. After the order to abandon ship, she was last spotted leaping into the water, never to be seen again. One of the escort vessels’ human survivors, jumping into the sea without a life vest, later found Sammy’s floating nearby. Unfortunately, it proved too small for him to put on. (source)
The story of Taffy 3 and the Battle Off Samar is, to me, the best navy surface warfare story we have. I highly highly recommend "The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors". The dog shows up a few times!
A MCPO recommended this book to me and I've used it to draft mine and chop others:
https://www.amazon.com/Definitive-Performance-Writing-Guide/dp/0962367303
It has different chapters of word/phrase banks for people who perform at different points on a scale from 0 through 10.
I've got a bag full of these. They are liquid but small and single packs (double walled pouches). Its working well while in the dorms but do you think this would be a bad idea when shipping to him: https://www.amazon.com/BerryPLUS-Eco-Friendly-Natural-Detergent-10-Packets/dp/B00BJO5FU6
Dog food isn't that bad you guys. You can get the beef stew cheaper than dinty moore.
Depends on how much you're willing to spend. I used a Sony Walkman player, it was about $250 but took a beating and kept kicking. I can't seem to find it now.
This one is kind of close. I know a few people used the SanDisk MiniClips wich are around $60 at best buy.
I've been using this for a few years now. Have used it both carry on and checked.
Thank you so much! FYI - it can get pretty raw at times as it was inspired by a lot of stuff that actually happened, it is still fiction. The part inspired by this murder can be found in Book 2 of the series.
https://www.amazon.com/Naval-Institute-Guide-Writing-Blue/dp/1591148227
Do not buy books specifically for writing evals. They're fucking trash. Most of them are filled with fluff and do not have any real impact. The book linked above is a generic Naval writing guide typically for khakis, but if your goal is to stay long term - it's a good investment.
Being sent to the Fleet undesignated is what motivated my ass all through ET A-School in 1995-96.
That said, I know quite a few people who were undesignated who have had great careers.
For example, I remember when Fireman Richardson was striking Damage Controlman on USS Rodney M. Davis (FFG 60). Look at him now!
Like anything else, the Navy is what you make of it.
Only what I saw on Sea Patrol, bud.
I used this product on Amazon so that it was able to pan and tilt
It includes a thin metal piece that goes between your case
EM here, This is the watch I use. No exposed metal bits (Except the backplate that touches your wrist). Stopwatch, timer, Timezone functions, 2nd timezone function (I kept that on wife time), Several alarms that can be set, hell even a compass and temp sensor! I dont wear it while im demetalized but, overall it is generally always on my wrist. I highly recommend it, and it looks pretty spiffy.
In Nathan Lowell's Trader's Tales series, they call this a "grav pallet" because of its similarity to a pallet jack.
Remember to buy an authorized one like this one for security reasons. If you don't like that one you can find others on the GSA website.
It's probably not actually any more secure but a different popular one (not on GSA's list) got in the news because optional drivers for it had remnants of a computer virus in the documentation files so you can bet your ass there's a NAVADMIN out there telling you not to use anything unapproved.
That’s really gonna be on what he has at his disposal. I would recommend bags of ground up coffee and then maybe some of these just in case he has a keurig.
https://www.amazon.com/Vanguard-Shirt-Garter-Original-Military/dp/B00DJY59F0/
Get these.
They don't clip into your sock, but do some weird smush thing for much more positive retention. Never had one come undone.
The ones that go on the bottoms of your feet can get hella uncomfortable. That strap is rubbing on the bottom of your foot all day.
It bothers me. So much so that I actually did research on it in grad school after I got out of the Navy. Specifically, I look at how news media frames military stories using hero stereotypes. I love it and can talk all day but it is admittedly super niche.
If you're interested in the sociological perspective behind this hero worship, I suggest reading the book G.I. Messiahs: Soldiering, War, and American Civil Religion by Jonathan Ebel. Ebel talks about how American culture is similar to a religion, and how the "soldiers" are held up as the "messiahs" who lay their lives down for American values - just like Jesus in Christianity.

a little off topic but you may find it helpful:
after you get a new CAC, you should get one of these:
then get a lanyard and attach it to the card holder. then attach one of those tile bluetooth trackers to it.
you’ll likely never lose it again. if you misplace it, you can “ping” the tile from your phone. you can also set up an alert to where it will give you a notification on your phone if you leave your CAC behind somewhere.
and you can obviously just slide your CAC out (heh) whenever you need to stick it in something, like an NMCI computer.
oh and also BUY SEPARATE LACES. for some reasons the ones that come with those boots brake super easy. just make sure they’re brown.

This, or the Identiv SCR3500 which is foldable, pocket sized and great for traveling with, are "functionally correct" and they work. My LCPO uses an SCR3500 on his Macbook, and some shipmates use them on Chromebooks. I have a MS Surface Pro, personally.
Best of luck to you! And best of luck making it as a writer also! I got out almost 30 years ago, but during Covid I wrote and published a trilogy based upon my experiences in the Navy (Tequila Vikings - the times were WAY different when I was in).
Even more important to your writing endeavors than your education are the experiences you picked up in the fleet. You saw stuff and met characters that normal people just can't imagine. That's a HUGE advantage you have over the average Joe putting pen to paper.
First-time listener, I really appreciated your perception of the situation.
Speaking on leadership and teaching local leaders to have the skills to deal with more mental health issues I have always felt not everyone can or wants to be a leader. I really wish the Navy would split the Chief rank and when you got to that point you could choose a leadership role or choose to become even more of a technical expert without doing a leadership role.
Lastly, I would like to recommend "Doctors on Demand" I found it when COVID shut down all my appointments. It's completely free for Tricare members' to have virtual appointments with therapists and/or psychologists.

"Desert Sailors" would like to have a word with the notion that US Navy isn't involved in combat operations. Fuck it, here a direst link to the book.

This is back in 2018 right? So more like this
I'm reading this book about seapower during the Revolution right now. The manner in which people and politicians on all sides seemed to think that a navy was a magic wand that could be wished into being without massive logistic and institutional support, and then simply pointed at a target to be destroyed really brings to mind much of the discussion from these last few weeks.
During my six-year hitch, I saw some people spectacularly ruin their lives in the Navy. To be fair though, they would have spectacularly ruined their lives had they joined the Rotarians. Or a bowling league. Or eHarmony. The Navy may have enhanced the magnitude of their stupidity, but by no means was it the cause of it.
Like any job, there are ups and there are downs. Through the course of my enlistment I was subjected to the best and worst of what the Navy had to offer. I certainly did not want to make it a career and was far more successful outside of it than I think I would have been inside of it, but even so, I can honestly say that I would not be where I am today without the experiences I gained in the Navy.
By the time I was 24, I had seen more countries than most people see in their entire lives, had a front row seat to two pieces of history being made, found myself as close to the center of a national news story, and experienced enough alcoholic misadventure to write three novels inspired by my time bar brawling my way across the Far East with a blood alcohol level that surpassed my IQ.
Not a single regret about any of it.
yep, I have one it doesn't link to my phone or anything but it's loud as hell and most thieves are opportunistic and don't want attention drawn to them.
The rubber part or the latch part?
The rubber part is a door stopper
https://www.amazon.com/uxcell-Rubber-Door-Stop-Replacement/dp/B07VHNC342
The latch is a 4-6 in door/gate latch. You can find them online, in hardware stores, or a shop (including a Navy repair shop) could manufacture one.
Talk to whoever in your division is responsible for putting in repair jobs to have one made or someone should be able to get Supply to order them - either through the NSN or out in town.
I did a paper on "Brown Water, Black Berets" for a 20th Century American History class in college. Interestingly, I was a reservist at a unit that still had PBR's in it's inventory in the late 90's (briefly) and I want to say they made at least 1 deployment to Iraq in the 2001-2002 timeframe.
Link is a decent reference and sheds some light on some obscure things like horizontally mounted, direct fire mortars on the boats.

I buy these. They’re expensive but comfortable, no bacon neck and they last going on two years now.
Go above and beyond, you can focus the flashlight on certain things. Stand on upper level and shine it all the down to lower level and see clearly. Cost a little bit of $ but just right it off on your tax returns

I used it before I joined and it's held up daily use for 3 ish years now. It's stupid bright and will last about 4 hours or so a charge.
Transitioning to purely civilian employment is a shock for a lot of veterans. The 'real' cost of health insurance can be surprising. One benefit of the Reserves is ability to get Tri-Care Reserve. It's not Obamacare Platinum, but it also doesn't cost $500/month, either.
Plus, depending on your location, having an ID card comes in pretty handy. Proximity to a base or facility with a gym can further keep your costs down, while helping you stay fit. Then there's the whole commissary/(PX/BX/NEX) thing.
Are you making significant changes to it (birth, marriage, divorce, etc)?
Did you follow the steps in this walk-through? Bear with me if that feels like a dumb question, because without meeting you I don't know exactly what you've done so far in this process (many people are still trying to update their stuff the old way).
One of my sailors left The Small Penis Bible out on his desk to see if I’d comment.
I used to be pretty active in r/GreenDawn (under an alt that I made specifically and only for that subreddit so that none of my sailors would dox me) and would leave the green army men around when I did room inspections. Only one of them ever took the army men and played the game with me =\
These babies are the only way to go. Bonus is that the MOB whistle still cuts through.
My anecdotal experience:
Companies pay a recruiter when they have a job that's difficult to fill. The reasons could be many: long hours, low pay (comparable to the industry), undesirable working conditions, etc etc etc. Companies pay a military specific recruiter when it's especially bad.
Why?
Because we in the military are used to long hours, low pay, and shitty working conditions. As a submarine nuke, anything was looking like a better deal.
My advice? Work with the recruiters. All of them. Bradley Morris, Orion, etc. Send your resume to every recruiter you can; they don't charge you. Get a feel for what they're trying to fit you with. Use their experience to help you with your resume.
But also look on places like indeed and monster. Apply on your own with your recruiter-updated resume. I guarantee you'll find better jobs with better hours for better pay than the ones the recruiters try to hook you up with.
It will take longer. That's ok; start sooner.

Right click and turn on BirdsEye
It's a great career path, 10/10 would recommend.
It's also insanely varied, and can get overwhelming, especially when you look at developer roadmaps like this.
If you're just starting out, just try different things out and see what you enjoy. Good luck!
