yes, completely normal and expected.
Great book on the topic of Sleep from Mathew Walker. Why we sleep.
Check out the Health Synch app on the Play store, it has a one time fee of a couple bucks, but it lets you explicitly control which devices contribute which data into Google Fit
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nl.appyhapps.healthsync&hl=en_US&gl=US
I'm juggling a Garmin Fenix (Activities, Steps, Daytime Heart Rate/Pulse Ox), Oura (Nighttime heart rate/HRV, sleep stats), and Withings Scale (weight) with that app.
Also make sure you turn of Google Fit's internal activity/step tracking if you are using another device for that.
You can get ring adjuster pads that you can cut to size from amazon (e.g. invisible ring size adjuster). I use those in the winter when it's looser then remove them during the summer. Just make sure you put them at the top of the ring, not behind the finger, where the sensors are.
For future reference there are apps that you can use to track distance to paired bluetooth devices, so long as they have power.
I used this one in the past. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pzolee.bluetoothscanner
It worked though was a bit cumbersome to use.
Hey, looks like a great study!
I'm building ActivityWatch together with my brother and a guy who's a CS student at University of Helsinki. We'd love to have a chat and talk about our mutual research interests and how we can help advance each others advance the field. Sending you a DM :)
There are some plastic things on amazon, used generically to help with stabilizing an overly wide ring. Maybe it can help. Like this:
https://www.amazon.de/-/en/Reducing-Adjuster-Invisible-Fixing-Sheets/dp/B07N8QGCX8
I did the same as you planned and used this ring sizer measuring tool https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09QGSGVP3?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details. I can say with confidence that is pretty accurate. I would say that maybe the Oura ring is half size smaller that what the sizer shows you. In my case I bought a 12 based on the sizer and I'm happy with my ring size. I would wish they have half size available, though.
Keep in mind also that the thickness of your fingers changes ALOT during the day. I didn't get how relevant that is until having the ring. Aim for a tighter feeling.
From your comment and this, I'm starting to think that's the reason for the elevated HR. I've been eating around 8/830 + the heat doesn't help either. Going to switch it up and stop eating at 6/630!
Is this the chillipad?
Swannies off Amazon and they work great.
You'll find cheaper ones but it's really easy to slap an orange lens on a frame and call it a blue light blocker.
In case you didn't know about this option - the NordVPN app supports split tunneling, so you can tell it not to route the Oura app through the VPN.
My restfulness was also always red and now it's the opposite.
I started taking this before bed:

Melatonin is used for latency but a side effect can be waking up too early, similar with other hormone supplements.
Your threonate dosage is pretty low, only 48mg, taking 5 pills would be a minimum.
I recommend this: MagFocus - Berry Flavored Magnesium Threonate Powder - 60 Servings - by Suzy Cohen, RPh. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015APQTUY/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_Z3K8CNE55TK71D5QNQBZ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I am using these to ever so slightly reduce the size of my ring. You obviously have to avoid putting the strip over any of the sensors, but this has made my ring feel just that little bit more snug.
Note that it also makes the fit onto the charger a bit tighter (since chargers are sized to the ring), but since the material of the spacer has some “squish” to it, it gives and the charger still works.

If you're between sizes, you can get ring adjusters that stick into the inside of the ring (like this) that typically tighten the ring half a size. Make sure you wear the ring for at least one or two full days, including sleep, as most fingers typically swell a bit overnight.

I got these, you can just spin the spacer to the top instead of the bottom.
Long press the app icon on your phone and select "App Info". Scroll down to the bottom and it should say what your app version is.
According to Google Play, the latest version released is 4.0.2 and it was pushed out on December 1, 2021.
Hi.
I tried health sync (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nl.appyhapps.healthsync) and it works absolutely perfectly as integration gateway.
This drops Strava from the sync path so it becomes: Garmin - Health sync - Google fit - Oura
As many steps, but it requires no manual poking or intervention, it just works and I'll gladly pay the few euros lifetime subscription for it.
I read somewhere about that, used with Oura but I can't remember where.
Basically is something like this https://www.amazon.com/Invisible-Adjuster-Loose-Rings-Assorted/dp/B07C15P2F7 and you need to position the resizer in the upper part of the ring, where there is no sensor, only the battery.
For the gen 3, I'm not quite sure, giving the fact that now there are multiple temperature sensors and they could be also on that side of the ring.
Really fascinating. Thank you for being willing to help. Would love to talk with you.

I just signed up for the OuraRing-users Facebook group -- looking forward to checking it out.
Would you tell me a bit more about the industry fatigue app?
I'm similarly between sizes. I went with the larger size because the step down felt like it would be uncomfortable snug when the weather gets warmer. I had a Gen2 ring for 4 years and I did not find that the slightly loose fit affected the data accuracy.
I'm also going to try a ring sizer to use in the colder months. I've heard others say they work well. There are a number to choose from. I'm trying this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07M9Y7CZM/
I cut up toe silicone toe covers into rings to put them over my ring. It was born out of necessity the first time I did it but it's been working great.

You can conquer the stress. Read/listen to this book and start taking some time for yourself just to breath correctly. I bet you will have amazing results.

(skip to the epilogue after the first or second chapter for a quick overview)
I had stress induced migraines for years. Treated the symptoms and not the root cause for the longest time. Meditation helped. Breathing techniques helped. There is definitely hope.
Good luck!
Detecting sleep versus awake is very easy to do with actigraphy (sleep detection based on body movement). So Oura's detection of awake/asleep should be highly accurate.
Although given that there are recording gaps, I do recommend trying the ring on a different finger, so that it fits better and gets more accurate recordings.
One thing to keep in mind with awake periods during the night is that we almost always don't remember them. Almost every sleep cycle ends with a "brief awakening", which might last less than a minute, or several minutes, or more. We are unlikely to be able to recall most of these brief awakenings. So our recollections of whether we were awake or not are much less reliable than a sleep recording device's records of asleep/awake states.
The awake periods in your hypnogram there are somewhat longer than I would expect for a healthy sleeper. As someone else mentioned, sleep apnea may be a factor.
> is there some service or something, where people could anonymously upload their data and compare it with others?
Have a look at Exist.io. Their service does the kinds of comparisons that you mention.
I'll take that kingdom now ;) (Although this might make it not fit the charger, so be careful)
Here are some suggestions that have helped me:

Damn your shit is bad. lol At my worst, I was in the low 70s. I'm now regularly in the 80s (usually 80-87%).
Maybe you're like me and have primary insomnia. Here's what helped me:
What helped me:
try these i just got them from amazon. works great because you can use it braced above the top. seems like they will work good. gives you at least a size down.

I’m new to the ring and have only had it for a couple weeks. I saw instant improvement in deep sleep and REM from using Jarrow Sleep Optimizer. I was being bombarded with ads for Proper sleep supplement on Instagram so I searched Amazon for highly rated sleep aids and it was definitely worth trying. My wife has been taking it as well, in about 20-30 minutes I’m really sleepy and it has helped overall.
Thank you all for the feedback, much appreciated! In the meanwhile, I've done some experimentation, and I've seen that if you use a wrist wallet like this one, the ring is picking up the activity as steps, which is all I need - probably the fact the ring is exposed to no light is "tricking" it into believing it's being worn.
Good point about manually tracking activities, the reason why I don't do this is a bit awkward: compared to other users, I have the opposite problem with regards to activity - for whatever reason, on "rest days" the ring (or I should say - the app), wants me to burn just 400cal, which is the equivalent of walking the dog a couple of times in the day and doing minimal house work, like cleaning / dish washing. To keep my activity low, I "sandbag", disabling for example the feed from MapMyFitness, where I log all my cross training (yoga, weights, rowing, ...). If I don't do this, I constantly get in the red for my activities, because the app says I am not having enough "easy days" in a week.
I would have hoped that, by now, the ring what have learnt what my baseline is, but it seems to stick to this 400cal figure...
Again, thanks all for your input!
Andrea
I wear mine lifting, but I use these on my two ring fingers: Stretchy Finger Protector Sleeve, Arthritis Support Sports Aid x10 by AUCHEN https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DHJL9B0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_A4R6QEzMyXBXB
If you're unable to exchange it, perhaps some ring adjuster can work? https://www.amazon.com/Sheets-Invisible-Adjuster-Tightener-Totally/dp/B08S3HPZQV
Something like that. There are tons on Amazon. I guess two full sizes might be a big ask though. I've just ordered an oura ring and I was kind of between two sizes so I ordered the bigger one and some ring adjusters.
I asked the u/oura_ring support about this too, no reply.
Ended up installing https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nl.appyhapps.healthsync&hl=en&gl=US Health Sync, don't know if it works yet (changed sync settings and the app warned me it takes up to a day for the sync to work well). We'll see.
Very disappointed Oura doesn't sync to Google Fit on its own though. Tired of installing million extra apps...
Health Sync gives you fine grain control over what datasets are coming from which devices, so you don't end up with stuff overwriting or double counting if multiple devices are both tracking a particular item.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nl.appyhapps.healthsync&hl=en_US&gl=US
Not sure how to resolve this in the Apple ecosystem, but the "Health Synch" app handles this on Android and makes having multiple tracking devices fairly painless.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nl.appyhapps.healthsync&hl=en_US&gl=US
Health Sync
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nl.appyhapps.healthsync&hl=en_US
Steps, Activities, Day Time Heart Rate, Pules Ox: Garmin > Google Fit Weight: Withings > Google Fit Sleep, Night Time Heart Rate: Oura > Google Fit
Then use the standard Google Fit > Oura integration
There's also a Health Sync app. This worked flawlessly. Sadly I switched to iOS though and now I can't find the equivalent for Apple's app store.
I agree with the blackout curtains- having my room in total darkness has made so much difference to my sleep quality.
I use these blackout blinds and have just put a thin layer of velcro round my window frame and then the blackout material can stick to the velco on one side so its really easy to just throw them up. My partner ordered them and cut them to the right size but left some extra fabric so there is room for it to not need to be neat when putting them up and makes sure there's no gaps that can let light in.
I know they're pricey but its sooo worth it.
