Congratulations on your flower. Don’t add sand it compacts and rots your Loph. Better options would be crushed red or black lava stone, lime stone screenings, charcoal like for fish tank filters, Akadama Japanese bonsai soil amendment, decomposed granite, expanded shale, zeolite, pumice, etc Amazon has some bags of mixed rocks containing some of these minerals.
You can also use something like this in your mix:
I stay away from sand as it tends to hold water/clump when watered.
I use pumice/black lava rock/limestome..
A mix of this and crushed limestone
Less Perlite, more rock. The Perlite will eventually work its way upward as you water
I got this one and know another person using the exact same one for yotes. Works just fine and it's cheap.
This whole setup cost me less than $150 and should make for a great winter home for my Lophophora collection & experiments.
FYI — the light you see is a Chinese knockoff but it’s one of the best I’ve ever purchased for the price, $19.99 on Amazon, (see here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08S34165C?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share). Low-heat, solid intensity for the purpose, and comes w/ dimmer, humidity/temp gauge, extra straps, etc.
You can find them in different sizes on Amazon by searching container with some lid.
sorry, was at work when i replied before.
even something simple and inexpensive like this is enough for young peyote. ($20)
in fact, i have basically these exact lights on one of my smaller grow shelves and a plastic food container with about 70 peyote seedlings growing in it. the lights are close to the plants because of the minimal available space on the rigged extra shelf i added. (probably about 6" away from the soil surface) they are a little more than 6 months old now and about the size of a plump skittle candy. until recently, the light was actually so strong that it was turning the seedlings purple and i had to block it out a portion of the light.
if you want a light capable of growing adult peyote, something like this will be more than enough. ($30) peyote arent as fast growing as san pedro and so dont crave huge amount of light the same way SP do. i have the bigger version of this light and its legit. i have my adult peyote off to the side of my main grow area, not directly under my LED panels. if you put them in close proximity, directly under a light like this, they'll get sunburned. contrary to common belief peyote are not found sitting out under intense direct light in the middle of a desert. they like to grow tucked away under scrub brush, between rocks, and near the base of trees. they dont want to be baking in direct Mexican sun all day. it hot dry conditions they will even sink into the dirt and pull themselves below ground level. it creates a little protective dirt wall around themself
Again, thank you so much for your help.
What are your thoughts on this?

The ones I ordered where peyote, I ordered 50 seeds. I only planted them recently and about 10 have come up so far. Hopefully more will germinate but either way I think pretty good for the price.
Depends what country you are in, im in the uk. Worth checking as that is where I have gotten all my seeds.
Thanks. The link doesn't work for me, but I think its this light on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/BoostGro-Spectrum-Linkable-Daylight-Lighting/dp/B093R6NVYY/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1C2N3SQNV4Z36&keywords=boost%2Blighting%2B2%2Bft%2Bled%2Bgrow%2Blight%2Bfull%2Bspectrum%2Blinkable%2Bblack&qid=1650738627&sprefix=boost%2Blig%2Caps%2C388&sr=8-2&th=1

I think I may have deleted my reply to this by accident but by what age do they start to require more light and is there any way to tell if they need more light before etiolation occurs? I’ve also got one of these for a carnivorous plant of mine would it work for germination and young seedlings?
If you're looking for something easy and pre-made best thing to do is to get a bonsai Stone mix. Something like this on amazon. I added a few things to mine to give it some other nutrients like limestone and earthworm castings (about a half teaspoon each). But that is a good base stone mix.
Bonsai Soil Mix - Premium Professional, All Purpose, Sifted and Ready to Use Tree Potting Blend in Easy Zip Bag - Akadama, Black Lava, Pumice & Charcoal (1.25 Quart)
Both are from amazon.

Thanks for sharing this!! 😍 I bought this one. Hoping this link works. https://www.amazon.com/LITTLE-FARMER-PRODUCTS-Backyard-Chickens/dp/B07G8G2418/ref=mp_s_a_1_38?crid=1PCY205YH0CMG&keywords=little+farmer+chicken+scratch&pscroll=1&qid=1643658646&sprefix=little+farmer+ch%2Caps%2C123&sr=8-38&w...
Same here! Chicken feed thats made of a few sources of calcium carbonate with added granite. Personal favorite linked below.
I don't know if the link will work for ya, but Stuff You Should Know has a great episode called How Peyote Works!
I use one of these octopus arm lights (mine is only 40w I think) with the 3 of the strips pressed up close to my containers (the 4th is aimed at my fern :P). If you can, try lowering your light so it's closer to the seedlings. Due to the inverse-square law you loose a lot of energy as you pull your light further away.
Got an Ikea near you? They have a small section for growing lamps where this one is the the best from my personal experience: https://www.amazon.de/IKEA-LED-Pflanzenlampe-PAR30-E26/dp/B07476BHGD . I believe it's called Växer LED Par30 or sth like that and costs around 15 bucks
I scorched a bunch to and did some looking. tried some of the grow lights on amazon like the small spider famer ones. But in the end im doing fine with the basic non grow lights, like these, 3 per shelf worked fine.
You really don't need any special lights and most LED or fluorescents will work fine. Here are my various lights - even some old fish tank purples.
Hit ‘em with this stuff they will grow really quick. After all the fertilizer I been through this is my favorite. Has b1 in it too which promotes root growth, it helps in many different ways.

I know this is 1mo old but I wouldn't use that stuff in particular based on the ingredients. I used this other stuff which has more minerals than just granite and my first two beginner buttons seem to like it.

Doctor,
I rarely give compliments as I thought I was quite the green thumb. Mine are around the same age first time doing this and are maybe at most half the size of the smallest ones in the picture. They look flawless good job man.
Definitely going to implement some top soil worm casings. The mostly vermiculite and sand with very little organic soil at all is telling me from this picture they need more nutrients. I just bought this one. What do you think?

I'm using these as supplemental lights for seedlings in my window. They're not marketed for plants but they're working well for my purposes. What I've heard may be more effective are t5 florescent light tubes but I have no experience with these.
buy some of that,
and this

the latter is a substrate... it's practically like fertilizer, very valuable. mix them together in your own ratio, whatever you find affordable or to your liking. If it's for bridgesii or something like that I use more regular soil and less substrate. for peyote, I use more substrate, but
cactus soil mix (my favorite brand is Black Gold) on the top for a seedling. they'll grow into the 1/3 pumice 1/3 lava 1/3 akadama rocks soon enough
cheers bud good luck

Do you think this small light would be sufficient? If I placed it out on my balcony, it would get rained on, slightly uncovered. This week it rained like 4 times. I assume that’s okay if the mineral soil is perfectly draining?
Try AzaMax friend, it has worked wonders.
If you notice spider mites, Alcohol (70% Iso) and Dish soap will work just aswell as Neem and will not hurt plants if applied sporadically.
