When they announced the new anime they made the choice to emulate the style of the original manga. Its not an excuse, its the reason. I'm on my mobile but I'll try to find the article where I read about that choice later.

I agree the they could have gone in a new direction with it, and it could have been good, but they didn't.

Edit: Ok, I have tried (and failed) to find where I read that they were directly emulating the manga style. If anyone can find something that specific it would be great. I did find this quote which could be interpreted to mean that, but it's not iron clad.

I think you all are missing the big announcement: The series has a director and studio. Toei was obvious and the director choice is not bad. I was hoping against hope that they would be able to snag Junichi Satou or Kunihiko Ikuhara (Though he had announced Penguinbear prior to this) for one more go, but life goes on and nostalgia fades.

Has anyone seen any of Munehisa Sakai's works? A bunch (44) of One Piece episodes as director and storyboard artist, the 10th and soccer movies and a good bit of Precure work. I can tell you that if he was in any way involved with Heartcatch, which it looks like he was, then he understands how magical girls should operate plenty enough to be given the reins here. He got the nod in Suite Precure as series director. How was that?

Looking forward to going back and analyzing every single fucking thing he's ever touched.

Uh, you haven't seen reviews elsewhere, have you? /r/sailormoon is relatively very forgiving. I'm really happy SM is back on in any form, even if they were stick figures in black and white, as long as it's from the original creator of the series!

I simply overlook the comments I don't agree with; but I am looking for discussion, and not blind worship. There's really ...not a lot else to discuss yet. Unless you want the show to tank, the question isn't ever "why are you people watching." Not if you want SMC to continue, that is.

Season 5 (Sailor Stars) is available with subtitles on Hulu right now. The company doing the new dub is still working on season 3, but there's a strong chance they will get to Sailor Stars in a few years.

The Stars arc of the comic was translated and released both in the 1990's and with the recent re-release. You can find the 1990's version online and the re-release in any bookstore or online store such as Amazon. This is probably the "two different versions" you're talking about.

If the comic has "StarS" on the cover underneath "Sailor Moon" (example: https://www.amazon.com/Sailor-Moon-Stars-Naako-Takeuchi/dp/1892213702) then it's the old 1990's release. If it does not (example: http://a.co/eg29yyy) then it's the new release.

The new release is much, much better than the old one, btw.

All the old transformations are online, and that doesn't make me want to watch the new dub any less. Ep 1 of Crystal is online, but sometimes I don't want to see the entire episode, just the opening or transformation or attack. If they're going to do shit like this, they should also make those sort of clips available for viewing on Crunchyroll and Hulu.

The anime industry isn't out to "get" anyone. It's not like other countries are forgotten.

This is 100% correct. According to this book, "Her editor suggested that she create a super hero whose costume consisted of the so-called 'sailor' uniforms that most Japanese schoolgirls wear to class each day." So, the uniform was actually the initial jumping point/inspiration for the series.

"Ita" means "pain." Ita bags are a spin-off of Itasha... Or painfully geeky cars, except instead of proclaiming your love for a thing using a whole car, you use a bag or a back pack.

You decorate it with emblems of the thing you love. It's usually pretty popular to get a bag that has a second clear layer to protect all your decorations. You can see a lot of them at anime conventions.

I posted to alt.fan.sailor-moon and was a regular in their IRC channel. Had numerous fansites; I found at least one archived (kinda embarrassing but here's the site anyways). I had a bunch of the manga, as well as posters, figures...and all of S via VHS fansubs. I wore a Professor Tomoe costume once to a local con. I did make a lot of friends back in the late 90s due to the fandom.

Viz is releasing the Eternal Editions, which are larger, nicer, etc, so the 2012 box set are probably not going to be published anymore. But you can probably still find the singles on Amazon.

The Eternal editions are awesome looking though! Metallic covers, larger sizes, the color illustrations are actually printed in color.

I was at a convention last summer and it looked like there were overseas companies interested in bringing the show abroad. I'm not sure what the name of the outfit was (I wrote it down... Somewhere...) but it looks like the second new musical will be run internationally. In January next year it will open in Shanghai. This is the first time any Moon musical has been performed outside if Japan so perhaps we may be as lucky to have it elsewhere abroad or an international release. :X if it's profitable... That is...

Here is a podcast interview with some Viz Media employees. If you listen, there is a lot of questions, and they seem like great questions. Unfortunately, there is a lot of side-stepping going on from Viz. The discussion of the clean opening on disc three really does bring the video difference to prominent attention.

I own the ADV sets and also have DVDs of the original dub. I do have Sailor Moon Center downloads as well. The Blu-Rays I have are the best quality, but it is a bit disconcerting to think that it could have been better.

Yes The Eternals are the best since the second reprint is going out of print soon because the Naoko editions aka the pocket versions of the Eternal Editions is coming out soon. That edition will replace the second reprint editions and will be cheaper than the Eternal Editions.

I'm assuming you're talking about the classic anime version of the Crystal Carillion and that might be difficult to find as a 3D printer file for free. You could check some 3D Printing subreddits, but I'm willing to bet you'd have to pay for the files since there's a decent amount of work that would go into rendering something like that. The only time I've seen the Carillon rendered as an official product recently was the die cast charm gashapon set that came out a few years ago. It's still available on Amazon, but whether or not you want to purchase it is up to you.

I have been waiting YEARS for this! I hope Kodansha releases a box set like the second release of the manga, or at least releases all the volumes at once, although that doesn't seem to be the case.

Unfortunately it's not in cotton, it's primarily comprised of satin, spandex, and grenadine. I looked at reviews ((there's customer photos included)) and it looks about spot-on to my costume, details with the shoulder paddings and waist detailing and all! I read great reviews about the material, despite not being cotton, and the colors and all are great! A minor inconvenience I read in the reviews are that the front and back bows are not attached, you add them to the costume through a fabric loop that you wrap through the middle of the bow and snap it to secure the bows ((which isn't terrible at all really))

OP, My wife does Sailor Moon cosplay and has a similar issue with wide calves you may check this out. My wife is a 16.5" and ordered a size 8, but she said they stretch. She also just added some moons by gluing them.

I'm brand new to the hobby (like literally 1 week, 3 paintings down).

You're going to need to layer your paint, so don't bother with expensive ones! I find that an initial thin coat works, and then a thick coat once dried going in the opposite direction with light pressure. Frequently check your work by flipping it over. I'm not great with keeping my lines straight but I've found the faster I draw one the cleaner it looks. I print out my reference pics in black/white for tracing and then have it pulled up on my phone for color matching and double checking lines/shading. Always mix more paint than you think you'll need, especially for important tones like skin where it'll be obvious if the shade is off half way through.

There's always the Naoko Takeuchi collection coming out next year. It has the smaller size of the 2011 release but the eternal editions translation. No colour pages though.

They did bicker quite a bit, but the key thing is that it wasn’t always vicious. There were some things like Mamoru teasing Usagi mostly on the subject of her love life, Usagi being jealous of Rei and Mamoru going out (which Mamoru wasn’t really interested in, he still gave more attention to Usagi than her), Mamoru sharing his dark past with only her, Mamoru placing Usagi’s safety over Sailor Moon, etc.

It's really weird, the listing doesn't list any languages, but they list only the English voice actors under Actors. It's been like that since release, I believe, which is why I always assumed the ADV boxsets contained the DiC dub.

It might be hard to find but there was a Sailor Moon picture book with the buttons on the side that made noises related to it.

The newer Eternal editions have an even higher page count so the series is condensed into 10 volumes rather than 12. They also have a new translation that reads better than the 2011 release. The Eternal editions are pricey, but if you wait until September, a budget version of them is coming out.

Nearly the same poses as the one you linked to but some of the details are different (like Usagi's yukata)...is one a fake version? Or is one an older version they changed?

So I know this is an old post, but I was doing a search on manga because I was interested in getting a copy myself since I just started watching the original sailor moon from the 90's (the one with the 200 episodes!.....I'm only halfway done, lol).

Anyway! This is what you're talking about, correct? Do you know if this an English written version? Also.....what story line does the Eternal Editions follow?? Should I finish all 200 of the older sailor moons first PLUS Sailor Moon Crystal? (I mean I have time since this comes out next year).

I feel so ignorant, but I don't know if Eternal is a whole separate storyline/plot or what.

They did the inner senshi in the Crystal style. I chose the original ones because the Crystal inner senshi look so boring! They aren't nearly as neat looking as the outer senshi. Mercury, Venus and Moon are decent. But the poses for Mars and Jupiter are not my favorites.

I mean I guess it depends on what you want. The version being released now by Viz is wonderful, has subtitles, accurate translations and a new dub. The new Japanese versions being released (or will be? I haven't kept up) are a different upscale with new boxes.

You can still find the ones you had on Amazon Japan. They were released in 2012 for the 20th anniversary of the show. They were not upscaled.

Hey I'd been thinking of posting the same thing! I visited our local Hastings recently and managed to grab nearly the entire set of the Banpresto Sailor Moon collectible figures for girls (the little chibi figures like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Banpresto-2-4-Inch-Collectable-Princess-Serenity/dp/B00UN7E6BO/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1470682628&amp;sr=8-12&amp;keywords=Sailor+moon+figure+for+girls) for about half the price I had seen them going for online. Also got myself one of the human Luna charms from twinkle dolly. Beware though, some of the larger figures like the SMC figuart statues, seemed to have been marked up quite high before being put on clearance. Some items had even higher "sale" prices than what they'd sell for normally on Amazon or other sites.

Here is a prop sized, more expensive one lol but I noticed the other one was just a keychain. You can shop around on ebay and stuff like that too and they have a pink as well as silver one! But it's a legit music box which is really cool, you can find several reviews n stuff for it on youtube!

but both items are integral to cosplaying sailor moon. as others have suggested. also amazon has a Luna Artemis and diana (all three cats in the anime) if you want to go that route.

If it's just the clamp that goes around her waist, you can buy plain S.H. Figuarts stands. I would think that the arm on the plain ones is the same as the one that comes packaged with the figure. There's this one up on Amazon for preorder.
