Yes. You need to use either 7zip or WinRAR, both of which are free software.
7zip can be downloaded here: https://www.7-zip.org/download.html
WinRAR can be downloaded here: https://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
Once either one of these utilities has been installed, the option to "extract to FILENAME" will appear under the drop-down menu when you right click. Alternatively, you can open the files with WinRAR or 7zip and drag/drop them out of the WinRAR/7zip window into another folder.
Right on Ambrosia Software's website. Pretty certain that's the only collection of addons, that being said, their collection is quite extensive. Tons of QoL things that make a huge difference, at least for me.
Best of luck to you man!

And you're right on the shitload of money part.
I spend something like half a mil just on supplies and fuel per month, but my colonies are managing to keep up. I have an two Atlases that basically just carry supplies, and 3 supertankers for fuel. I drain my colonies on a regular basis.
I spent all my money waging war on the Hegemony after they just wouldn't take the hint with their AI inspections.
There are now no Hegemony planets in the core sector in my save.
So after the war I treated myself to a fleet of Paragons.
If anyone has time to kill waiting for the next release, I recommend a anime movie called Space Pirate Captain Harlock. It really made me want to blow up some ships! The English dubbing is average at best but the exploding ships and weapons make it a good watch. The story is okay too. :)
I'm just gonna give you the full tutorial just in case. :)
Firstly, locate your settings file in your config file (Fractal Softworks\Starsector\starsector-core\data\config) and have Notepad++ to open it (cause regular notepad screws up formatting).
Also, make sure to back up your settings file in case you screw something up.
Open the settings file, press CTRL and F. Type "maxBattleSize" into the window that opens and click "find next."
Once you've found "maxBattleSize", change the number right of it (it should be 500 by default). When you have done that, save your changes. Load into your game, access your in-game settings and adjust your battle size slider accordingly.
Keep in mind that very large battle sizes can get weighty on your computer if it's a dinosaur.
Enjoy!
They seem pretty similar to the ones in Glen Cook’s book Passage at Arms
hella I still check in time to time with the EV / EVN crew on IRC
I think you guys ought to check out "Transcendence" and "Endless Sky" if you haven't already! both are pretty inspired/influenced by EVN and play slick too.
Transcendence is more about a singular ship travelling the world while endless sky is more focused on a fleet and trading
I haven't played Endless sky that much but I loved Transendence, and the dev is working on a part 2.

I recommend these skills. In particular, "Crew Training" (green) and the Technology (blue) skills are very good. The red skills are good for officers but not as good for your character. Because you won't be putting putting 6+ points into red but might in the other categories.
Note that high Combat Rating is an important buff. 100% CR is a 10% bonus to each of: maneuverability, damage taken, damage dealt, fighter refit time, and accuracy.
> Is this a particularly big deal? Where could I get another one, and how good/replaceable of a ship is that?
No. Not a big deal. Ships come and go easily in this game. Apogee is on the better side in early game but hardly irreplaceable.
For quality ships you want to go to a port. Click on the Colony Info (M). Bring up this screen of ship hull producers/consumers. More icons = the ports that will have the best ships for that faction. For an Apogee it will be Persean or Tri-Trac.
Note that selling ships isn't worth the effort of getting them to port. A good portion of the value when sold is actually the weapons equipped. It is basically the same value in supplies/fuel/heavy machinery if scuttled. So you are better off scuttling ships you don't want and save the cost of flying them somewhere.
Notepad is probably just the default application for all kinds of file types (haven't used Windows in a long time, so not sure). Probably just a bunch of jibberish you saw right? Get 7-Zip from here and try unzipping the archive with that.
Had this problem myself it's a 7z format, which you either need a zip program to open or you can use the free software here: https://www.7-zip.org/
It works just like any zip or rar type of file just for whatever reason some default softwares don't recognize it.
