Fortunately or un-, you probably won't be able to go to what movies show as frat parties. During the summer the members are usually gone, and even if there was a house that was throwing a party, if you are a dude who is not a member of that frat they won't let you in, and if you are a girl, DO NOT GO TO FRAT PARTIES ALONE. I'm not saying that all frats are full of rapers, but frats are full of rapers.
If I were you I would either check out the /r/LosAngeles sub, where there are sure to be parties advertised, or just wander around the apartments right off campus and crash an apt party HERE! This is also the area where all the frats are located, so if you pass by a big house with Greek letters on it and a party inside, you might as well check it out...
Good luck and have fun!
Some more UCLA Transportation propaganda that I wasted time on making. It’s not like I have a week 9 midterm (???) to study for or anything.
For those that play American Truck Simulator, you can get my UCLA skin on the Steam Workshop.
Shameless plug for the UCLA study group Discord server where I stream ATS at random hours of the day.
Link to original. And here is the part about UCLA.
which intersection was this? this kid probably thought he was too cool for brakes and helmets...so sad
Edit: found it
I was annoyed when I read Professor Kahn's initial entry yesterday morning (he's edited it partially since the original publication). The op-ed was devoid of any empirical data. I am also pretty confident that Professor Kahn did not submit any requests for data because I work at the UCLA Fund, which raises annual gifts for departments and entities around campus, and none of us heard from him. Our student giving committee, whose mission is to build/contribute to the culture of philanthropy amongst our undergraduate students, includes FIVE transfer students, several of whom are in their first year at UCLA. (Hello to the SGC - we love you!) We would have told Professor Kahn that transfer students (current and graduated) support UCLA at roughly the same rate as those who matriculated as freshmen.
If anything, we should be talking about how to ensure that ALL of our students, regardless of when they matriculate, have the best possible experience at UCLA. That includes their in-class experiences, the way we provide them with customer service (ranging from housing, the registrar, parking and transportation, and so forth), and making sure that every single student has at least one staff or faculty member who gives a (damn) about them. I don't work with students on a daily basis, unfortunately, but I do know several from various committees I serve on and I would jump in front of a bus for them.
And finally, I think it is interesting that Professor Kahn says he wants to stimulate debate. How ironic that the mode he chose to generate national debate - the Christian Science Monitor - does not accept comments. Luckily, Professor Kahn has posted his original entry on his personal blog and you can comment here: http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=15200437&postID=6426064199414438171&isPopup=true
Haha. Looks wrong but pretty sure it's right.

Edit: It's answers.com so grain of salt and all, but... "http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Grammar_question_When_using_MD_is_it_a_MD_or_an_MD".
When I saw the top story on yahoo, I almost thought reddit was the reason why it was there. Wow, I need to get off this site and get a life.
Tbh, no one is really prepared for tech interviews without serious practice outside of class (unless you’re a genius or something). If you’ve got a grasp of basic programming, that should be enough to start interview prepping. It’ll just take some extra effort to fill in the topics you haven’t learned yet. Try doing (and understanding well) the Leetcode Blind75 problem list, which is basically an overview of most types of problems you could see in tech interviews.
For most things, the Google apps are fine. Collaborating with a group is also generally easier.
Microsoft Office does offer a lot more features, so there'll be times you definitely need it. You can still collaborate with a group with Office Online. I haven't used it in a while, but year and a half ago it could be somewhat clunky if too many people were working on it at the same time. You can also easily open documents from online in your downloaded Office apps, which is really convenient when you need the extra features to add something and when you're done, it'll all show up online. However it does require a bit of coordination if other people were working on the document at the same time. Office is also very seamlessly synced between online and offline if you use OneDrive to back up your documents. It also autosaves to the cloud, so it's basically just as safe.
In general, when you're working with a group, Google docs is the simplest and easiest option. Office Online is for when you need the extra features, namely in Excel. For solo projects and if you don't need Office's features, then that's just personal preference. I usually like Office because I didn't like working in a browser where it's easier to get distracted.
Edit: BTW, you have unlimited Google Drive storage in your g.ucla account. You can also get their Backup and Sync app to automatically backup specific folders on your computer and to sync stuff saved in your Google Drive.
It's just a cluster fuck of javascript/ HTML5 awesomeness/ stupidity. Try it at https://sites.google.com/site/themothermonstermatrix/ There's nothing quite like it. Gaga is a badass. Straight up. Watch her showstudio interview for the main reason why I fell in love with her. Nevertheless, the MMM is old news for me, and I'm not really a little monster anymore. I might go back to programming some day, but I want to make some friends first!
No idea about your original question, but for your goal - have you considered a free online tool to OCR the PDF and save it as a Word doc? Then you can search and save it all you want... This is just one of many I've seen online before...
Private Internet Access keeps no logs and has nodes all over the world, I recommend that one.
I do not recommend any free VPNs. The bandwidth won't be useful enough. Do research before buying, look for VPNs that keep no logs.
Aw man, I can't believe I missed out on Royksopp. :'( No one wanted to go with me and I didn't feel like going alone.
I think we should make posts like "Hey /r/ucla who wanted to go to ***** with me!"
Also, join the UCLA Electronic Music Club (https://www.facebook.com/bruinemc) as they all go to electronic music events together.
Some things never change... I fought with that thing my freshman year, 06-07.
It's a side-effect of bureaucracy, as I see it. CTS has a limited budget, so they install and maintain networks in the public spaces like Ackerman and different coffee shops and restaurants. Departments have limited budgets, and providing wifi access that - let's face it - will be a distraction for professors trying to teach, isn't a priority. Sure there are a lot of legitimate uses, but somewhere along the line it comes out of someone's budget. And especially with general assignment rooms, the wifi will be used by non-department students, so that's an additional disincentive for departments to fund it.
This is rather old, but I did dig up this from the UCLA Technology Complaints facebook page. I do know people that respond to these kinds of things and they DO get taken seriously, though frustratingly slowly, and often run into stumbling blocks that aren't announced publicly.
> Not getting WIFI where you want it on campus? We are logging texts sent to (310) 694-0487 to find out where trouble spots are AND where you can't get WIFI and all and wish you could. Send us your exact location when you text and we'll have the data we need to make things better!!
You all should also download flux onto your computers. It's a free program to lower blue light. There's Night Shift on iOS and a Blue Light Filter toggle on some/all? Android devices in the notification panel. App/Play Store have apps as well to lower the blue light even further. Night Mode on apps/websites/devices also lowers blue light since it changes whites into blacks/dark grays.
If anyone is unsure if they qualify for CalFresh and would like help applying, there is an org on campus called CalFresh Initiative that hosts office hours through zoom. You can schedule an appointment with them through their Calendly. I personally found it really helpful!
Bruinwalk is your first line of defense.
However (and as a disclaimer, most of my teachers at UCLA have been good), you just will come across professors who are bad teachers sometimes, whether it be a lack of actually teaching the material, shitty assignments, tests from left field, whatever. You just kind of have to accept that a lot of the time, you WILL be teaching yourself.
I've been a lazy twat this quarter and almost never gone to class, but I'm doing well because depending on the class you really can learn on your own. Especially with math. Good resources for math: textbook, student math center on like the 3rd floor of MS, and http://www.khanacademy.org/
All that said, I haven't taken upper div anything yet. You might try talking to some upperclass math majors to see what the professors are like. I've heard if you're into your subject, these things get alot better in upper div.
Mondo Taco, in Santa Monica, is definitely my favorite choice for free GrubHub delivery to Westwood. (Or in person when at the beach.) They serve 20 or 30 varieties of fusion soft tacos, anything from Japanese to Indian to British fish and chips. Even if you don't live in Westwood, GrubHub is happy to deliver to you on a campus sidewalk. Yes, I am shamefully lazy and have done this at the flagpole rather than walk the 15 minutes home.
If you find a specific flavor that you love, you can also then order them as a supersized fusion burrito. Crispy Fish has gotten me through so many Finals seasons...
I am just a very deep and creative thinker who has spent the past 20+ years locked inside his own cranium. Existential philosophy, theoretical physics, whatevs. All the other details are just so much window dressing. Check out some of my work here: https://sites.google.com/site/unitheory/
Power plugs *in* classrooms and halls are kind of hit-or-miss. Some of the halls are modernized and have plugs everywhere; others have one or two for a room of 100 students. I would say that you can't really rely on having access to one.
I take notes on my laptop as well; it's battery life is pretty decent, but since I've occasionally ended up with 8 hours straight of classes, I've had to come up with options as well. I have one of these that I keep charged and carry around when I'm at risk of needing it. It'll get my Yoga about 2/3 of a full charge, which is typically another 4 hours or so if I'm being realistic with it. It can be a little noisy - the fan on it runs when it's working as a power supply - but no more so than a cooling fan on a laptop; I just put it on the floor and try to aim it under seats so it's less annoying.
There are plenty of plugs elsewhere, though, depending on what else will be open on campus.
Actually, if you caught the message before the edit, I posted the wrong one. Here's the right link. Sorry lol

aside from that, I also agree with talking to your roommate and if that doesn't work, escalating to the RA!
If you get an extension, recommend that you get one that’s correctly rated.

As somebody who comes from a place where we use only jets/bidets, my secret weapon is the portable bidet. Its a little rubber bottle with an extended nozzle that I fill up with water before shitting. Decent ones are pretty cheap too!
Yes, this is purely extracurricular. The pace will be catered to first time programmers.

Kind of expensive but really good!
Try to find a 3" thick one with good reviews if you can. I got this one (sadly no longer available) but it made my dorm bed the most comfortable thing I've ever slept on. I've had multiple people end up buying one after feeling mine, lol...
This one. Hands down. I got it for my dorm this last year and slept like a baby every night. And not just me. I got 3 of my close friends to buy it too just saying
Lucid Mattress Topperslept slept on it.
This is usually what people use when they do that tho. And you get water from the sink.

get industrial ear muffs. i ended up getting ones similar to these and i don't regret a thing
I can't imagine my mom not giving me permission to cut my hair. I've been shaving my own head since ninth grade (back when I still identified as female). I use these clippers to cut my own hair every few weeks and it is so quick and easy - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B086QX2YQ5.
BTW, if you need a Costco membership, get it now since there's a bonus $40 gift card and $40 off $250 online purchase. https://www.groupon.com/deals/n-costco-membership-2020
If you've got a car and go a little further down Westwood, Sprouts is a great store with great weekly deals. There's even a bulk spice station, which is the best deal for any spices you can't get at Trader Joe's, but I'm pretty sure it's been temporarily removed because of covid-19.
CAC’s Diverse City Tours hosts 2 free trips every quarter to a neighborhood in LA. The tour this Sunday focuses on Los Feliz! Free round trip transportation and local recommendations of things to do will be offered.
Wow, if you look at our stats for Absolute growth, we weren't too far behind from RIT in terms of points.
close race. you guys are rad.
With all due respect, what do you expect them to do beyond what you can do yourself with the Lysol wipes? If you follow the instructions on the wipes to the letter (notably, if it says surfaces need to stay damp for three minutes or whatever, you make sure they stay damp for three minutes), you can disinfect the surfaces in the room just as well as anyone else.
If you really feel like that's not enough, the world is back to having a reasonable supply of disinfectants, so you don't have to order them off of eBay anymore. Clorox makes a hydrogen peroxide disinfectant spray that can be used as a soft surface sanitizer*, meaning you can also spray curtains and bedding with it if you can't wait to move in.
* Sanitizing is not quite the same as disinfecting. The goal of disinfection is to (virtually) completely neutralize all pathogens. The goal of sanitization is to reduce their numbers to an acceptable level. Because fabrics are porous and can be of varying thicknesses, it's not possible to completely disinfect them with a spray.
Clearly you should use my free app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.leebyloaf.ucladining
and check out the nutrition values while in the dining halls.
Kidding aside, you should think about exercise more- boosting your metabolism makes more room for tasty food!
If you're cost averse, I would set up a VPN server at your home, so that all your downloads go through your home network and is encrypted by the time they get back to UCLA's network.
can help you out if you're a bit new.
Internet is not connected to UCLA's. The ISP is Spectrum and fast.com gave me a rating of about 60Mbps down and 5Mbps up just now. Each room has its own router, so you'll only share wifi with your roommate. During the school day I've never had issues with the connection, no drops when hosting or attending Zoom meetings, but it can be more variable in the evenings and on weekends.
I generally don't have issues with the internet dropping, but jitter can be an issue. If you play reaction-intensive online games like shooters or MOBAs you may want to connect to the ethernet. If you just stream stuff you should be fine.
Here's an Emacs reference sheet: https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/refcards/pdf/refcard.pdf
CS 35L specs in general are confusing to get through, so become BFFs with a TA and go to office hours. Cheating is rampant in the class as people tend to post their code on GitHub, but I'd suggest resisting the urge to do so because you'll learn a lot through sheer frustration of working with the material.
Hello all! I just wanted to drop in here and introduce this amazing site called 7 Cups. homework was usually due on fridays for me, and the labs were due by your next lab section so you had one week to do it. hmmm try https://libgen.is/ for the textbook. and im not sure if you can find help online for the problems, BUT professor jukka usually is super helpful and explains thoroughly if you go to office hours! he usually went over homework problems requests during OH so i def recommend going if you're having trouble. :) best of luck, and dw it isn't a super hard class! if you have jukka im sure it'll be fun. his exams are super straightforward as well
$10 (90% discount) on a year of Headspace with your UCLA email. I've been using it every morning for a few months and it has radically changed my stress levels.

Only Zoom host and paticipants who are granted right to record Zoom can record Zoom lectures. That's really frustrating! I just want to record some lectures for my son. I browse through methods and have to use third-party screen recorder to record Zoom lectures.
hahahhaha, that's me, but I would never say things as trivial as "system" and "the man". I am a deep fucking philosophical being, lmfao: https://sites.google.com/site/unitheory/
I don't want to program computers again until I can make some friends who want to work with me. But the MMM is pretty interesting as a meditation on Javascript/ HTML5 insanity... nothing quite like it anywhere. https://sites.google.com/site/themothermonstermatrix/
I'm not really a little monster anymore. But I will probably become one again when Gaga FINALLY acknowledges my existence. LOL.
BTW, who doesn't want to bang sorority girls???????????

There are probably better ones, but this is the link I have on hand. Also, you could get involved in a club or two. It'd mean staying later or maybe hanging out in the library for several hours, but then traffic would be nicer anyway. Plus, meeting people. Plug for Bruin Harmony (auditions on Sep 29th/30th!), MUN, and all the other cool kids.
Been doing remote work study, and honestly it didn't go well at first. Everything was a mess, I was very unproductive. I began to get a hang of things by using a todo list to manage my work tasks and school tasks.
It's hard at first, but you'll get used to the schedule after a few weeks.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rhombus.bruinmenu There's a tab that says how many swipes you should have on this app. It's pretty good except the takeout weekly specials hasn't been updated for the new covid menu. The dining hall stuff still works tho
Would it be possible to bring a small clothing rack to a dorm room?
Some of my clothes will shrink otherwise. I saw something fold-able like this (https://www.amazon.com/BINO-3-Tier-Collapsing-Foldable-Laundry/dp/B07G8Q2YRW/ref=sr_1_42?dchild=1&keywords=dorm%2Bline%2Bdry%2Brack&qid=1627413455&sr=8-42&th=1).
Even better, you can get blue light screen protectors that hook right over the monitor and can easily move from one monitor to the next.
You can go on amazon and get one for cheap and they take maybe 5 minutes to set up, and depending on the type you get, you turn a large gap between trees into a hammock spot. 10/10 would recommend it's a fantastic experience.
This is the one I use and it's great and portable

During spring when we first went into quarantine, I was doing all of my zoom classes and schoolwork with a super old HP laptop. I was having the exact same problems as you are, even though I had replaced the battery a few months prior. Therefore, over the summer, I got a Lenovo Flex 5 laptop with the relatively new Ryzen 4500u processor. The laptop has been absolutely amazing for schoolwork and even a little bit of gaming (but I mean a VERY limited amount). It’s a 2in1 laptop that comes with a Lenovo stylus. Honestly, for the price, I can’t recommend this laptop enough. Here’s the Amazon link if you want to check it out. I got it for $699, but it looks like it’s currently on sale.

Pro tip: if you have an android phone just install this app that just automatically accepts duo push notifications. If you want to take it up a notch you can use tapermonkey or something similar to fill in your credentials on your browser and automatically click login.
If you are handy, cheap, and want a "good enough" Mac until the ARM ones come out, I suggest you get a used or refurb MacBook Pro Retina 13" early 2015 (MacBookPro12,1) or MacBook Pro Retina 15" mid 2015 (MacBookPro11,4-11,5), then follow the instructions on this page to upgrade to a four-lane 1 or 2TB NVMe SSD drive. You could get a very nice Mac with a huge SSD for under $1k.
Jumping on this, if you want to buy a cost-efficient tablet, I suggest you look at the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite which is around $300-$350 right now! I don't personally have the tablet, but the S Pen is included with the price, so if you just wanna use it for taking notes or light web-browsing, i think it's a great choice! I agree with everything u/brbcryinginside said!
I use a 1/2 inch exercise mat. I think I got mine from my local TJ maxx or Marshall's for $15-20. There's this one on amazon. I highly prefer thicker mats for the extra cushioning
^comforter reference: https://www.amazon.com/Charisma-Plush-Queen-Blanket-IVORY/dp/B00BLSYTT8
not saying buy that one, but for reference if you see it at costco for like $20 its a really good one. it was nice having a big blanket that i could double up or undouble
Thanks for the help! Did you get it on something like this? https://www.amazon.com/dp/1464138265/ref=olp_product_details?_encoding=UTF8&me= it says not guaranteed but it's in the title? I think it's better to ask someone to piggyback their code right? Thanks so much!
hey man, im sorry but I guess the price went up now. When I bought it back in april it was only 10 bucks.... maybe it'll go down sometime soon but for now thats the best i can do
If you happen to have the UCLA edition of Friedberg's Linear Algebra (the one you'll likely use for 115A) already, there's a section at the end with an intro to proofs. This book is pretty popular at universities with a dedicated intro to proofs class, so it might be worth checking out; I read a bit of it before taking the upper divs. Hope that helps!
"I dont want to do the CS major as it seems too bureaucratic and without direct application in the employment sector" uh what? CS has a very direct application, which is software engineering or algorithm development. Both are essential in industry. Really confused by what you mean by "too bureaucratic"
1) If you're looking to get employed in software look at Cracking the Coding Interview
https://www.amazon.com/Cracking-Coding-Interview-Programming-Questions/dp/098478280X
2) Take CS111 as well, you will probably get asked operating system concepts during your interviews
I would also consider a steamer. It's essentially the same concept. This sucker saved my life at UCLA
