The book is a coming of age story set in UF. It's free from today until Sunday. I'd love it if you guys took a read.
Hopefully it rings true for those of you currently in school and gives some nice, fuzzy nostalgia to those of you who've graduated.

Hope your summer semester has been a blast so far.
If you are taking it in the Fall, just take Programming Fundamentals 1, lots of people take the class as their first programming class first semester freshman year. You are not prevented from taking this class.
If you are worried about keeping up, there are some courses online that you can work through, just search intro to programming with java. For example, https://www.udacity.com/course/java-programming-basics--ud282 Looking at this free courses syllabus it pretty much covers the first half to 2/3 of programming 1 at uf.
Hey, I’m a supervisor for AT labs and we are currently hiring for fall! Our applications are open from now til July 1st at 9pm. Here’s a link to the application: https://forms.office.com/r/HhLy682aBg and more info about the job here: https://labs.at.ufl.edu/about-at-labs/jobs/. Let me know if you have any questions
Sorry you’re dealing with this. There are people that can help. My dad gave me this book Don't Sweat the Small Stuff . . . and It's All Small Stuff: Simple Ways to Keep the Little Things from Taking Over Your Life (Don't Sweat the Small Stuff Series) https://www.amazon.com/dp/0786881852/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_WAMASG6RMFDRKJM8HTVF a while back and it helped to give me some perspective.

LOFT YOUR BED!!! loft it as high as it possibly goes, some dorms loft higher than others, but you should be able to sit under your bed at max height even w the lower ones
i had a bed that could loft high enough for me to comfortably put my desk underneath, and the space saving was invaluable, DO IT
if your bed doesnt loft high enough for a desk, you could make a cute sitting area under the bed with a rug and some lights
but of course you HAVE to store stuff under your bed, and i recommend THESE metal cubes because they fit 3 x 3 PERFECTLY under a bed along the short side, which leaves plenty of space for a desk/sitting area
if you have questions i can try to find pics of my dorm back when i lived in a double at simpson, i brought a TON of stuff (art supplies yknow) and i managed to fit an entire counter of kitchen supplies because i wasnt on a meal plan, and there was still plenty of space in the dorm for my roommate to do her wild hip hop dances
My Bean Boots from LL Bean have been a life saver as well as this waterproof backpack cover from amazon: https://www.amazon.com/AGPTEK-Waterproof-Backpack-Traveling-Activities/dp/B072MGFQB3/ref=sr_1_7?crid=3CSJBSP5AUDN4&keywords=waterproof+backpack+cover&qid=1559919857&s=gateway&sprefix=waterproof+backpack%2Caps%2C160&sr=8-7. I also always keep a small umbrella in my backpack and if I know it's going to rain, I'll carry a water repellent windbreaker.
https://put.io/ is well worth the $10 a month, it's like Google Drive that automatically torrents things. You download files from the site so it just looks like normal traffic. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
EDIT: Also use http://www.irongeek.com/i.php?page=security/osfuscate-change-your-windows-os-tcp-ip-fingerprint-to-confuse-p0f-networkminer-ettercap-nmap-and-other-os-detection-tools to change you OS fingerprint along with a user agent switcher extension in your browser. This will effectively kill SafeConnect and allow 100% uninterrupted access without the installation of any UF spyware. I did this for over a year and never had any issues. Talking about 10+ gigs a day of downloads on DHNet. Or just use Linux.
You mentioned reading so I’ll put you on this chrome extension, natural reader. This helps me read faster just by keeping pace and following along. Rip if your readings are like photocopied or some junk but otherwise this might help!
The Android app is called "SecureW2 JoinNow" and the developer is SecureW2. This is a link to the play store page, hopefully it works https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.securew2.paladin
COP3503: Get the C++ Primer but ignore everything about C++11. Make sure you have access to the dungeon/CISE computers remotely. Your code needs to work on them and their compiler does not support C++11. Doing it remote allows you the ability to not have to go to campus to test your code. If you have Liu it should be easy and for the project make sure you know how to write test code for classes.
COT3100: Get the textbook and start reading. Read ahead. If you picked Sitharam, get out and get the other professor.
MAP2302: Brush up on your calc. Integrations/derivatives and all the methods like integration by parts, chain rule, etc. If you have Williamson, it will be easier. If you can do the homework, then the exams are cake.
MHF3202: Not familiar with this class.
Think the cheapest way might be to buy external storage to install boot camp or parallels on, nothing to fancy or just temporary. Other than that maybe if there’s a way to remotely log into a school computer but that might be more trouble than it’s worth and I don’t think IT would allow users to use a vm on them.
This’ll probably do it but also Costco puts them on sale all the time so you might be able to find something there if available to you.

I had an acer aspire from 2012 that just died, so i replaced it with a newer acer aspire. Got it on Amazon for 379. I plan on swapping out the HDD with an SSD and doing a fresh windows install when it arrives later today. My aspire was fairly robust and easy to fix/upgrade myself.

I will always and forever tell CS students here to take Algorithm Design with Alper Ungor. If you feel somewhat confident with data structures and discrete math, the class will level you up in terms of interview prep and give you an appreciation for the mathematical side of the major in general.
The class goes over a lot of the topics in the Introduction To Algorithms textbook, starting with sorting algorithms and getting into topics related to dynamic programming, graph traversal, computational geometry, P=NP, etc. Ungor seems to have relaxed with how strict he is with undergraduates, he expressed many times that he prefers teaching undergrads and wanted to make the class more appealing to a larger crowd. He also respected the class a ton and took feedback very seriously
I got something like this OP
you'll want at least 2 in, 3 to splurge. Make sure it's a twin XL!
I got them from this Amazon link which also includes some biodegradable pots, soil, trimmers, and a general instruction book. I might post an update picture to show if the seeds actually take, but so far the people that run the page are very friendly/supportive if there are any questions
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Club!

Southwest Rec Activity Room #2

Jiu Jitsu is the martial arts of grappling. There are no punches, kicks, or strikes. We use leverage and technique so that smaller, weaker people can overcome stronger bigger people. You do not need to be experienced in martial arts to start. Many of the people here are beginners so you would be with others trying something new as well.

Btw, cool stuff like this is from jiu jitsu.

You can view past reviews of teachers here and just search up each teacher's name---I wouldn't know much since I'm a freshman too lol, but seeing as some people have posted confusion over the STAFF label and wanting a specific professor, I thought that posting this would be helpful.
Many people like Korolev, but take each review (good and bad) with discretion. Everyone learns differently and their attitude toward a class can vary depending on how you view chemistry as well as how you take the transition from high school to college. When you get your appointment on day 2 of preview there might be certain chem classes filled up already, so at least first get something that fits your schedule/personal preference, and enter the class with an open mind. If u have any specific preview questions PM me and I'll be happy to help.
getplan.co is really nice for time blocking. A lot of other apps I've found take a crazy amount of setup but this one can be used casually. The UI is a tiny bit wonky though. I find the built-in time assignment too clunky to be useful.
Do not neglect to schedule time for things like spending time with your gf and watching tv. It helps to actually put things like that on your todo list and block out time for it.
Also, protip, try to schedule each task with a 15min gap between them, especially big tasks (you can probably stack a couple 30min tasks w/o issue). When I don't do that, I fall way behind and feel terrible.
When I lived out west all the little old Asian ladies used these carts lined with fabric to transport their shopping or laundry or whatever else, there are also those wheeler Wagons for children or some other type of wagon, but the cart is best if you have to bring it up stairs
That one in the link doesn't have fantastic reviews so you may wanna explore other options if you go that route
I worked at a mall that had a trader joes so I saw probably a thousand or so of those carts in my time out there, so I guess they're probably useful
I bought a security key from amazon and it works great. This is the one I bought. I like it because it's so small, but there are much cheaper ones out there.
I have been using two-factor authentication for a few months now at UF. I use to use it through other organizations. The way UF is doing it is not that bad relative to other systems I have used. You can use the DuoAuth. app on your smart phone as one method. You can get a fob, and I believe there is one free from the IT help desk. Finally, you can get a Yubi-Key (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BYSB7FK) Yubico Security Key - Two Factor Authentication USB Security Key, from Amazon for about 20 bucks.
All you have to do is put it in a USB slot, and touch it with your finger when it blinks to login. It is so much easier than the phone or fob approach. I just leave it in my computer all the time and has caused me no problems. I might get another for my keychain for when I travel.
Good luck! :)
The first required one is Sets and Logic. Usually they use: How to Prove It: A Structured Approach, 2nd Edition https://www.amazon.com/dp/0521675995/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_rE.eybZMYQ8NV If you want to take a peek before you decide to do math.
Maybe invest in a practice mute? That should make your playing a lot quieter and less bothersome to roommates
Since nobody else has, I'll recommend a portable monitor I really like, the Lenovo ThinkVision M14. I have a ThinkPad (a T480) and it uses the exact same physical screen that's installed inside my laptop, so it's a perfect match. It's really lightweight and gets all its power from the same USB-C port that provides the video signal so all you need to use it is the monitor and one cable. My only gripe is that it will only work with laptops that support DisplayPort over USB-C, but that encompasses most recent laptops. If you know what laptop your son has, I could definitely make a more specific recommendation. Merry Christmas!
These are amazing, cheap, and a great lunch. I have them with some fruit and a yogurt for lunch. For breakfast I meal prep steak and eggs. Preparation takes about 30 mins. For dinner I meal prep chicken and rice with veggies, and preparation takes about an hour. So 7 days of food (3 meals a day) in about two hours total on Sundays.

Y’all might need to read this book about how to calm down and stop hating people because of their political views. Be nice to people, even if they’re different
Not to make light of your situation, but I’ve always said if I ever needed to use a cane, I’d get something like this. Im all seriousness OP, I’m so sorry you’re in this happened to you but I’m sure you’ll have no problems on campus. I think your biggest worry right now should be non-ADA friendly areas on campus.
I use this. it can fold down and keeps charge decently. Had it since 2019.
Instant kettle, door lock (like a non-permanent deadbolt), white board (if you're living with others, it's great for leaving notes, making a grocery list, etc), and a general tool kit.
If your concerned about how it looks or just don’t want to wear something annoying and bulky I highly recommend investing in an inflatable life jacket. Basically they remain sleek and slim until you need it. They inflate automatically if you have a hard impact on water from a height or you can manually inflate them by pulling a tab. I personally hate the tightness of regular life vests. They can range from 50 to 100 bucks but it’s worth it, it if you will be doing lots of water activities in the future:
Here is an example of one I found:
ABSOLUTE OUTDOOR Onyx A/M-24 Automatic/Manual Inflatable Life Jacket https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NXVUM60/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_3RDKA710Y4M6T4KXBKCD
Never stayed in a dorm at UF specifically but, ALWAYS wear some sort of feet protection in the bathroom. This means slides in the showers. You cannot trust everyone to not spread around foot fungus. Also, if your dorm allows it, get yourself an electric kettle (dorms usually allow the kind with an electronic base). You'll use it way more than you think. If you're a coffee drinker, you can just use your kettle to make it in a french press. I graduated years ago but I have an electric kettle and a french press in my office and I use both everyday. Also, idk how the key set ups are but make yourself a copy of your key to permanently attach to your shower caddy (like with some sort of cord or something). As a freshman, I accidentally locked myself out of my dorm room twice while showering and had to wait 20+ minutes in only a towel for my RA to come unlock the door for me.
Some of y'all have never had Starburst minis and it shows😔Jk
https://www.amazon.com/Starburst-Original-Minis-Fruit-Chews/dp/B00CPJ6XVO
Basically you know Starbursts? Well they made mini versions of them that come in these little bags and they're unwrapped and stuff. They have a different formula from normal Starbursts, They taste good but the formula they use tends to lend itself to emergency bathroom breaks. I love them but they always make me feel a little sick, glad to know I'm not the only one lol.
[If you prefer a laptop that works well without a big name on it, try Chuwi. They’re a chinese company with something to prove as they’re computers are really sleek and affordable. I’m also really terrified of roaches and i bought this thingy! You just place it right over the drain and it doesn’t move. The holes are too small for anything to get through except for water, so you don’t even have to touch the drain at all. On top of that, you can stick some paper towels in the overflow drain hole thing too. I’m sorry people were giving you a hard time:(
Two things:
Familiarize yourself with the basics. Check out some introductory programming sites if you've never done it before. Learning how to program is a lot like building construction. Don't worry too much about learning how to use a hammer or how to use a screwdriver (specific languages) - focus more on the fundamentals of what makes a building a building (programming fundamentals). I'd recommend something like http://www.codecademy.com/ to start off, specifically the Python track. You'll learn a lot of the fundamentals you'd be taught in a first semester programming course, and Python is a really easy language to pick up. It's what we call a very 'high level' language, meaning writing Python is pretty close to writing in plain English.
Get EXCITED about CS. You're about to find yourself in one of the coolest disciplines out there*. Check out youtube channels like https://www.youtube.com/user/Computerphile and learn a bit about the history of the field. Check out books and articles related to CS and expand your mind! I think studies about the origin of consciousness and how it relates to AI are super interesting, so I recommend books like "Gödel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid" - ones that aren't necessarily related to CS, but still really cool in an abstract, logical sense. See what interests you and learn as much as you can about it. A little passion goes a LONG way in this field. :)

It’s not just UF though, it’s colleges in general (being in Florida doesn’t hurt).
College campuses across the country are seeing seeing massive numbers of positive cases. You can see dashboards here: https://www.notion.so/add247571d644fd2938c8c5a0e042252?v=b0d5e4bfa6bc40aeb9b70c9df952ba54
Check out this apartment finder app from rent.com that covers both apartments and houses. All the properties you see are available for medium- and long-term rentals; it doesn't deal with short-term accommodation or property purchases.
Pictionary/Skribbl.io could work. I think the max is 12 or 8, so you'd need multiple "rooms" running.
Spyfall kind of has Among Us vibes, where you try to find who the spy is, but it's based on answering questions to each other about the location that everyone knows, except the spy. I think the max is 10 people per game, so you'd have to put everyone into breakout rooms to talk.
They do happen but you don’t hear about them a lot because a DoS attack doesn’t necessarily take a site offline, only ones where the traffic being sent is larger than the capacity of the server. Many companies use a DoS protection service that can alert them when they’re being attacked and reroute their traffic through filters (I am a bit surprised UF doesn’t have this). In other cases, the servers can handle enough traffic (think Google servers and AWS and even these are susceptible) that it doesn’t crash the site, just makes it slow. The ones you do hear about are cases where these measures weren’t in place or where the traffic is so massive that the servers couldn’t handle it. The latter kind were uncommon until recently but there are new types of DoS attacks that can amplify traffic more easily so I expect we will be seeing more of these types in the future. Also, it isn’t great publicity for a company so they try to keep them quiet if they can. Here’s a link if you want to read more about some more famous attacks
Just finishing this course now (final tomorrow!). Here's all the lecture slides I've been saving over the semester, may be a few missing. A couple practice exams and the syllabus is in there too.
There is a pretty significant curve, so as long as you do well on the first exam (quite easy compared to the rest of the course) and keep up with homework, quizzes, and lecture participation you shouldn't have too difficult of a time. Quizzes and exams take quite heavily from the homework so make sure to study them. Good luck!
You can make her an explosion box and fill it up with any pictures you have together, any letters you want to write to her, or any memoirs from past dates. I think it’s a really sentimental gift you could give to her and when she sees it explode it’ll give for a nice reaction. Also it’s relatively cheap to make (around $20-30). Amazon Exploding Box
This website will provide tons of detail about the climate here. The graphs show the typical ranges of highs and lows, as well as how long the cool and warm seasons last.
What you'll notice here from October - April is that the weather is very erratic. Winter weather is characterized by fronts, which can bring rapid temperature swings. There's no such thing as a "normal" day, because it can be 82/65 on a Monday in January and 50/30 on Wednesday. One November day I left my house and it was 82 degrees, but a cold front came through and by the time I was biking home at 8PM, it was 57, windy, and raining! So you'll see some surprisingly cold winter days, but also some beautiful ones. Spring and fall are like a milder version of winter - it's generally warm with a few cool days and a few hot days.
Summer is always hot and humid, except when it's raining. Even then, temperatures below 70 are rare. On the bright side, it's the only time of the year when you can truly ditch the sweater. Perhaps fortunately, summer is also much cloudier than the other seasons, so the sun won't usually beat down the way it does in late May.
Overall, Gainesville's weather is better than most of the country. We certainly get our fair share of cold, but even in January there will be warm days sprinkled in. Additionally, our cold air is imported from the northern regions, but the subtropical sun still shines down intensely in the winter. So it might be 60 degrees in the shade, but stand in the sun and it'll be nice and toasty!
We also have been playing a lot of fortnite (lol) just bc it’s free and phone and cross-platform compatible, everyone can play even if they don’t have a decent PC or console.
I keep getting this error: http://screencloud.net/v/sPCj
I did get the STMP to work though, just not the imap. I have been migrated to GatorCloud and am no longer on the old system. Are you sure the new Office365 allows IMAP setup?
I remember looking into this a year ago and didn't find it. Instead, I use Zotero (https://www.zotero.org/\), which is open source and free! I have it synced across my cloud space so I can work on research at home and at UF. Sorry I couldn't answer your question, but I think this is a great alternative if you support open source free software.
You can setup a server on a cheap VPS such as DigitalOcean or Linode. DigitalOcean will give you a $100 credit with a .edu email address which is good for hosting a decent server for almost a year. Amazon AWS will give you a small server for free. It should be enough to run a server with only a few people.
All of these require knowing a little about the UNIX command-line. PM me if you need help.
EDIT: VPS = linux server in the cloud (Virtual Private Server).
Yes, but the contract lasts from August 2019 to July 2020. When you sublease it, you will be taking over the contract. So, you would have to find someone to sublease it from you for the time period that you do not need it. It is not a complicated process, and I do it all the time. The total cost is $1,200. It includes all utilities and amenities except for electricity. The electricity usually costs me $45 a month because I share the studio with my sister but that depends on your usage. If you would like to get a visual of the apartment, here is the link to the Facebook post that I made.
Update: I'm including a link to a doodle poll for anyone interested in attending a weekly livestream. This will determine the general time frame when we're going to do this. So select time frames that are generally good for you, not just for next week. Thanks!

Python is one of the easier languages to pick up, but the only class I used it in was Performant Programming in Python which is an elective. Still, going through most of Python Crash Course is part of what inspired me to apply to the post-baccalaureate program.
For UFO, you'll use Java in Intro to Programming Fundamentals 1 then C++ in Intro to Programming Fundamentals 2 and Data Structures & Algorithms. If you wanted to overly prepare for your first few semesters, you could spend your time diving into those. A lot of CS courses are locked until you complete DSA, so it'll be a few semesters until you get to some of the others (Python, JavaScript, C, etc.). But the more languages you learn, the easier it is to pivot to others.
They do make “adult” razors. I bought one a few years ago on Amazon, about $80. The handlebars go much higher up than the traditional, and the wheels are slightly bigger which is good for bumps. I’m 5’7 and it is perfect for me. It could go a few inches taller too. I don’t have mine on campus, should I bring it? Order the pink one if you want to match https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EM42AVQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_NCN2MNAD402HTW9K7YEF?psc=1
I also have a significant fear of roaches -- like panic attack levels of fear (yes I've lived in Florida for many years, and yes it is embarrassing).
The best thing I can say is try to get rid of them to prevent you from ever seeing them. I like to use bait traps (like this) and find that they're pretty effective. I don't like spraying things. I put the bait traps in cupboards/around sinks. Mainly hidden places so that my cat doesn't stumble upon them (she also doesn't ever eat roaches so I'm not worried about her ingesting the poison that way).
Avoid keeping food in your room (unless it has an airtight seal). If you have any, keep it off the ground in a box/drawer that roaches can't get into. Try to avoid clutter so that they can't hide.
And last piece of advice is to get really brave and designate a shoe for roach killing (wrap/tape a paper towel to it to keep bug guts from getting on your shoe). Anything that is heavy-ish and that you can throw with accuracy works. Or become pals with a roommate/floormate who will kill them for you.
I got mine a very long time ago, but it is Honeywell brand and this looks almost identical: https://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-HPA104-True-Allergen-Remover/dp/B00BWYO2PM/ref=asc_df_B00BWYO2PM/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=167141564568&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=11223082987754787170&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&am...
This is mine and it’s great - around $65, and can sometimes find a bundle that includes an extendable arm and pop filter for not much more. The difference is worth it. You could buy a security key that you can put on your keychain. You simply put it in a USB port and tap it when asked to authenticate.
I use a YubiKey - 20 bucks on amazon. Basically plugs into your USB on your computer. Just touch and go after registering on the 2FA UFL site. It's so much easier than using the cell phone app ( which is now a backup ).
Yubico Security Key - U2F and FIDO2, USB-A, Two-Factor Authentication on amazon is currently 20 bucks. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BYSB7FK

That's a good book for an introduction:
If you want to learn everything:
Just do practice problems from both. I'd also recommend finding an MOOC or heading over to youtube tutorials. /r/learnprogramming
Don't bother with the classes at UF. I've always found that I learn more by teaching myself. Maybe register to find out who's teaching it and then drop it. Go to their office hours for questions.
just built a single speed bike to bring to UF. its reeeeeaaaallly fast!! dont get a fixed gear. They do have "flipflop hubs" that have SS on one side and fixed on the other.
Microsoft Exchange isn't supported on my Android so I had to use a third-party app called Nine. It's like ten bucks, though.
