If you don’t have the commodule already, consider not getting it, and instead either connect a cable to an Android device and run coxswain, or go for the SmartRow upgrade and get better data.

The commodule hardware can be flaky for some people. The only real free option for it is WaterRower Connect which is a bit underwhelming. Coxswain can get the same data for you. Going to SmartRow will give you an improved way to get data and all your sessions are recorded for no subscription cost. If you wish, you can then broadcast that data to some other apps if you want a different experience. SmartRow also apparently works with HoloFit (I haven’t used it to confirm), and you mentioned that as an interest.
Have you tried connecting it to WaterRower Connect? All you need is a USB mini cable and an on-the-to adapter.
I'm a little surprised that they went from two boards to a single board for the base. That makes the WaterRower look much more like the Chinese knock-offs, but probably does save costs.
From a technology perspective it is a perfectly fine 17.3" Android tablet, the mount it comes with is the best part given it can be be collapsed allowing the rower to stand on end. The only negative for the tablet is the speakers don't get very loud, adding some external speakers such as the following works around that. From a workout perspective, the Ergatta platform being game based does motivate better than just the stats on the WaterRower monitor and also has open rows for some scenery.

If you you have a WaterRower and like the Ergatta workouts then the upgrade package gets you there. Though you won't be able to easily do anything other than the Ergatta workouts with the upgrade package, there are ways to add NetFlix and some other apps but the tablet is too locked down to make it easy or be able to install any app.
You can connect a cable to the back of the S4 and take it to an android device to run the app Coxswain for free: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=svenmeier.coxswain
The commodule can be flaky and I’ve heard of many people who have had issues with it. When I used it there were a few times it wouldn’t charge until I unscrewed the back and disconnected the battery from the logic board and reconnected it.
Get some of those interlocking garage/gym floor protection mats that look like giant puzzle pieces. Fairly inexpensive and allow you to customize for exactly what size you need under your rower. I’ve picked up two sets for < $20 a set (8 pieces per set along with border pieces) from bulk store (BJs, Costco, Sam’s Club).
Because they are a little thicker they allow rower to sink in a fraction. Work perfectly for me.
Similar ones from Amazon (after 5 second search, might find cheaper)
It might not be on waterrower.com, but this is the first result for “waterrower a1” on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/WaterRower-Exercise-Driftwood-Self-Regulating-Resistance/dp/B07FN8W8XQ I think it’s a distributor-exclusive thing?
Haha, yeah the beep is a bit loud! Glad you are happy with your A1 purchase.
I saw a posting online about A1 users applying dry PTFE lubricant in the grooves of the rails to make the seat a bit quieter. I gave it a try and I noticed the difference. It goes on wet, but dried after about 20 minutes. Since it's a dry lube, it doesn't attract dirt or dust. Something to keep in mind.
