Lucky! I’m always browsing the glassware looking for those. I once found a new set of Spiegelu IPA glasses for $5 but my whiskey glasses are still lacking.
Also, just a tip if you drink coffee - check the vases from time to time because sometimes they put a Chemex in there not knowing what it is.
I ordered it at a Dutch alcohol webshop called DrankGigant.nl, so I doubt that's available for you.
I've done some looking on Amazon for you:
I'm sure if you look a bit better than me, you can find it for cheaper (or maybe even just the top?).

It's a good place to start for scotch.
Very, very, very bare bones info on whiskey:
Whiskey is a spirit distilled from cereal grains (corn, rye, oats, wheat, barley, etc)
Bourbon whiskey is made in America, made from at least 51% corn, distilled to less than 160 proof, and aged in charred new oak barrels at less than 125 proof. Bourbon has a flavor of corn, rye, caramel, vanilla, char, and oak.
Rye whiskey is typically made in America and it at least 51% rye. It tastes like rye.
Scotch whisky is made in Scotland from only malted barley. Scotch has a lot few rules about how it is aged in barrels, so it can have a much wider range of flavor than bourbon. Read the FAQ linked earlier.
Canadian whisky used to be mostly rye made, but is now mostly corn. It tends to be sweeter and smoother than other whiskey. Not a lot of complexity.
Irish Whiskey is made in Ireland or malted and unmalted barley. It is typically smoother than other whiskeys, and does not have a lot of complex flavors.
Other countries that make whiskey include Japan and India.
Typically:
AmErica makes whiskEy
IrEland makes whiskEy
Scotland makes whisky
Canada makes whisky

For those who don't know what this is, the intended usage is to cool the metal base in a freezer, then place the glass on top to cool the whisky without using ice cubes. Amazon link for those who might be interested in such a thing:
https://www.amazon.com/Peugeot-266097-Impitoyable-Tasting-Chilling/dp/B014W4YZTQ
Still though, not sure why you would use this on something nice like GTS.
My advice would be this:
1/ buy a can of Private Preserve, which is a canned, neutral gas designed to flush the oxygen out of wine and spirit bottles so as to avoid oxidation and thus, spoilage. It's not very expensive and it works incredibly well when used correctly.
2/ Spray the stuff into the bottle and immediately re-seal the bottle using its original cap, assuming said cap is in good condition. If it isn't, find a suitable replacement (before you spray the gas).
3/ Seal the bottle for the foreseeable future using bottle wax, which you'll find on Amazon or at winemaking supply stores. No need to buy a ton of the stuff, just enough to completely coat the top of the bottle and the surrounding neck. Wax has been used for centuries for this specific purpose and we still haven't found a better solution for long-term bottle sealing.
p.s.: get the good bottle wax, the kind winemakers used to use. The good kind is hard to the touch and chips and breaks easily. The not-as-good kind feels like plastic and peels off instead of breaking cleanly. Both types will work, but the first kind is better.
4/ Store the bottle upright (not on its side) in a dark room with as little temperature variations as possible, just like you'd store wine (except wine is stored on its side, unlike spirits). A cellar is generally the best option, if you have one.
5/ When the day comes, remove said bottle from storage, break the wax seal and enjoy a drink in front of a chimney fire or something just as cool and tell the kids cool war stories about their dad.
Sorry for your friend. Hope this helps.
Be safe!
Sure thing. I bought 2 packages, because I used 9 of these lights and there’s only 6 to a package.

As for the glass it's a Norlan glass; I got it on Amazon and while they are a bit pricey I like them a lot. It works well as a rocks glass or a neat glass and the double paned glass insulates the whisky from your hand really well.

Sounds like you're planning to keep it and drink a couple of decades down the road.
If I were you, I would do some reading on how to appropriately store whiskey long-term if you haven't already.

Also wrap it up in clothes. You can get your bags shrink-wrapped at the airport to help discourage rummaging around in your luggage.

If the cork has broken and is dry and kinda crumbly, you have two choices. Push the cork into the bottle and strain the contents into a different capped bottle.

I got these watch glass covers, they work well, you do need to becareful about dropping them but since there's like 12 of them, breaking one isn't a big deal.
Agreed! Port Charlotte is amazing, it is the perfect amount of peat-y-ness. Just splendid altogether.

Best watched while drinking.... :)
If you want to get a big oaky profile just for learning purposes, you could buy some oak chips like these and soak them in some whiskey of your choice. After a week or two, you would get that “over oaked” flavor. Your local home brew supply would have them in stock, too. I like to play with oaking vodka or grain spirits, or over oaking bourbon just for fun.
Not sure if this is exactly what you mean, but I personally use these: Amazon link.

I don't have a great sense of smell, but I find these to really focus the smell without being overpowering. I personally find Glencairns awkward to hold and drink from, and pick up more alcohol on the nose. I also like to be able to hold the whisky to warm it and find this to be much easier with a stemmed glass. YMMV.
It's not hard to find in England: we can get Amazon to deliver it or find it in lots of shops (including the Gold and the Straight From The Barrel)...
I was poking around on the internet archive yesterday. I tried to find the exact book I was into but not finding it easily this morning.

EDIT: I realize I didn't answer your question.
I have tried some of the cocktails, but I have started down this rabbit hole of trying to make all the auxillary stuff that no longer exists. I started with making my own bitters, and attempting to recreate Abbott's bitters (which I think is now available from some of the new bitters makers). I moved on to gomme syrop and creme de menthe glaciale. I'm moving into some of the fruit syrups. I may also try making Kino, a red gum syrup, which some recipes include exotic/impossible ingredients such as spanish fly (which is a stimulant in minute quantities, but is painfully inflamming in larger doses). Orgeate is also on my list, but I think I will be forced to substitute apricot pits for bitter almond.
There are no discernible dates on the bottle. I took a photo of the bottom because it has '60' but it's hard to read. Next to it is another number '52' but that's even harder to read. I tried doing a bit of research but can't find anywhere that mentions the square bottle except an old ad from 1960.

2012 air here, I figured 8 years isn't too shabby. What sucks is it happened during a long job search period. You can read the hard drive though using something like this if you have another computer. This is for my model specifically so look for yours.
They’re classic and you can’t go wrong with them. You might even have enough left over to get him a bottle of old grand dad or something.
The classic whiskey glass is called a glencairn, and you can find them online for not much money. They're glass and you generally don't use ice with them, although if you're careful you could (I do sometimes).
You can get a set of four for around $30 -- the single above is $10.
If you want fancier, I like the Nos'r from Brumate. It's a stainless steel double-walled "glass". The outside is matte black (or wood tone) and is easy to hold. The inside is shaped like a glencairn. It's $25. The wood tone isn't available on Amazon right now, but do a google search and you'll probably find it elsewhere.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GL6Z1X3/ref=twister_B07GL6YMFC?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
You could also look up the Norlan whiskey glass. I have these is clear glass. They feel a little flimsy but they've held up well, and they have a matte black version as well with a gold tone inside that's really pretty to look at when full. Also around $25 for a single.
I'm moving houses soon, and was just thinking about this. Not for any fancy purposes, but just to consolidate some leftover remnants from bottles. But after reading more about it, the idea of keeping a bottle over the years with a bit of history sounds cool.
I bought this bottle off Amazon for the moving job, it was cheap and I was just gonna repurpose it for other stuff, but I may just keep this bottle as my "leftovers" bottle.

Nice glassware is always welcome. Glencairn glasses are the most common nosing glass in the whiskey world. The Irish answer to the Glencairn are called Túath glasses, and they’re functionally and aesthetically more interesting. Those would make a really cool surprise.
Whatever you do, don’t buy whiskey stones, they don’t work.
Prior to the Glencairn, we had other types of whiskey and single malt glasses. Examples included this Glenlivet-branded glass and this one from Schott Zwiesel. I have a half dozen of the latter and love them. They're every bit as good as the Glencairn, cheaper, and less prone to breakage.
I found this book on Amazon, if you have Kindle Unlimited then reading it is free:

I basically have this subreddit to thank for introducing whiskey into my life, so I thought I'd share!
Back in college I decided "my drink" was Jack Daniels mixed with orange soda. It was horrible but it was "my drink" so that's what I had and it ruined whiskey for me for decades.
About three years ago I stumbled on this subreddit and thought I'd give whiskey a try again. I grabbed a random bottle that I thought looked cool (yeah you guessed it, Basil Hayden's. Sorry). And over the course of the last few years, have become quite a fan of whiskey. Bourbon in particular but I've been branching out recently with rye, Japanese and Irish whiskeys.
Besides buying many bottles, my wife and I (who also became a whiskey fan during this time) decided to commission a bar to be built. Put together some sketches and had a talented woodworker friend of ours build it, mostly from reclaimed wood. Also added in a Govee LED light strip that I tied into my home automation since I’m a bit of a nerd there. We were both super happy with the result and it's easily my favorite piece of furniture ever. Ended up making an entire room pretty much dedicated to it (as well as Magic: The Gathering, which also became an addiction around the same time as whiskey). I like to chill in there and try a new bourbon paired with a listening recommendation from Maul564 .
I also made a habit to track and rate whiskeys which is a fun reference and good way to look for repeat or future purchases.
So yeah, thanks again Reddit for introducing me to whiskey!
(And yes, there are some non whiskeys hiding in the top right corner I need to keep around to appease friends)
thanks. well xmas is fast approaching so i know what to ask for. yea the mission is to try them all if possible.well maybe not the 25. but you never know.
just noticed there is a miniature set on amazon which contains, lore, quarter cask and 10. not cheap though. would be good if they done more like this to taste test.
Oh that's an interesting question. I bought these, which I think are the main ones. But you can't really push them out. Both sides have a lip of sorts where you have to lift up the glass, so I don't think that should be an issue for you.

I'm thinking make you're own. Great trade item.
Depending on who is quoting the best price at the time, I might get something like Eagle Rare from a supermarket or delivered by Amazon; things like the Weller line or Blanton's are often overpriced by Amazon sellers, so I'd be more likely to use a specialist whisky shop; BTAC tends to be by ballot or at auction... (Do bear in mind that prices on this side of the Atlantic start higher, due to import costs and taxes etc. and BT here is usually only 40% ABV, rather than 45%)
As said below, clear boston rounds are the way to go, just make sure you get them with the conical round caps (plastic cap with a softer plastic insert that seals perfectly). There are some that come with the coated cardboard insert in the cap, not as good and not reusable after a few times being washed.
A good rinse/soak after use cleans them right up for another use. Don't use too much soap if you go that route, and always rinse and store unsealed once dry.
No affiliation, just a link to the 2oz ones I have used (and re-used 10x or more) doing many Zoom tastings for our whiskey group over the last few years.

WRDO is one of my favorites for an old fashioned.
A couple things that could elevate it to the next level:
Large ice cubes/spheres. I use this but there’s lots of options. Your ice will melt slower and water down your drink less.
An expressed orange peel. Brings some nice acidity to the drink and it looks good.
A Luxardo cherry. Game changer.
This happened to me on Christmas Eve a few years ago with a bottle of Bruichladdich I was so excited to share with my dad and brother. I had half a mind to cancel Christmas altogether when my wife suggested pushing the cork in and pouring the contents into a decanter through a filter we had for our wine aerator (like these Vinturi V3000 Red Wine Aerator Filter Screens, 5-Pack, Black (Discontinued https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003XEANHK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_4NW5YBKGPC79R6S6MYJF)

I just picked up a bottle of angels envy rye finished in Caribbean rum barrels. $79 a bottle here in the Midwest and it's absolutely fantastic and a rather unique liquor in my opinion. I don't usually see it on shelves around here you have to ask and it's in the back at all of my local shops. Great to drink neat especially if you're just getting into better bourbons and away from mixing. I also included a link in which I am no way affiliated with to a very popular set of whiskey glasses. Could be a nice touch to go with a bottle of bourbon. If you can't find the Angels envy Maker's Mark cask strength 46 was just released in the midwest last week and I have seen it pretty much everywhere it's in the $60 range and it is absolutely fantastic. Harder to find this time of the year but high West makes a midwinter's night's dream and it is a phenomenal whiskey I don't think it's technically a bourbon but it's very nice. Any of the nicer wellers are usually appreciated. The bourbon market is all over the place right now so definitely check your msrp's and don't let a shop scalp you. My local store still sells orvw for $10 over MSRP granted they only get a couple of bottles a year in first come first serve on the shelf.

I am not an expert in these matters. However, Bill Goldring -- the CEO of Sazerac Company, the parent of Buffalo Trace Distillery -- is Jewish. Due to the multi-year aging process required of Kentucky straight bourbon, the product would otherwise be non-kosher since ownership by a Jew is forbidden during Passover. In a workaround, Sazerac Company symbolically transfers title to a non-Jewish company executive throughout Pesach.
What is really cool is that the kosher certification means the product is unadulterated. It is like the Bottled-in-Bond Act governed by a higher authority, so to speak.
There is even a book on the subject if anyone is interested:

People make lamps out of them.
You can also use a bottle cutter and make candles.
I have a weird application for those stones. Get a Sterling Engine on Amazon. You put it on you coffee mug and then it will cause the wheel to spin. It works better if there’s an ice cube on the top portion. But Ice melts and makes a mess, so using a whiskey stone that’s frozen works the best. Just a useless tip I’ve learned. Enjoy!
Many many folks put a few drops of water in their whisky and whiskey. Its personal choice though. Some never add a thing. If he is a water in guy, a dropper or pipette would be a nice gift. If you really want to get fancy, get him a nice Glencairn Glass, even with his initial on it
And a matching pipette

Not sure if there are rarer older bottles out there, but it is a fairly popular blended whiskey brand sold at most grocery stores in Japan. Retail is maybe $20 or so?

I looked into a product similar to what I’ve linked below. For my setup it would mean a little bit of drilling, so I haven’t made the leap yet… but for your shelving this might be more practical.
You will have to search around a bit still (“bought together” and similar product suggestions), but essentially you can cut this to length and use spacing where needed.

You can use this if concerned. It will keep it just like the day you opened it basically. Couple sprays in the bottle, cork back on, good to go.
I wonder if this would work just as well?sink strainer
Well some people go through the effort of boiling down marshmallows. But, I'm lazy and just use Torani smores syrup.
I just bought "Bourbon and Oak" cologne recently by Cremo - it's really nice and less than $25.
