Agreed. I don't even have any qualms with itch.io as a provider in this instance; I've used it before as a consumer before (but only once or twice). I just want this thing in my hands so I can try it on my desktop and Surface to map out a ton of worlds.
> But this is internet etiquette.
While I agree that this is indeed a beautiful map, and that it most definately adds it's own value standing as it's own work, usage rights are not merely a matter of etiquette. Specifically permission derivative works are not merely a matter of ettiquette.... Noting also that the original artist did in comments grant somebody permission for derivative work when asked, so there is clearly the possibility of obtaining that permission.
DeviantArt allows artists who don't want to draft their own licenses to flag creative-commons licenses, which is a good place to start in understanding the different licensing elements.
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/
> In the same way you don't have to credit Google for their work on Google Maps if you used a map of Earth in your work.
Actually, Google does require you to credit them for derivative works of both Google Maps and Earth. Practically, if the work is heavily derivative, it would be hard for Google to prove themselves the source of a derivation, and they have little interest in doing so.
https://www.google.com/permissions/geoguidelines/
Further this particular artist in comments for earlier WIP described having created this work from Google Maps, not an earlier work by another artist. It's not just they won't credit the original artist, they have tried to pass this off the work they have drawn from the original as their own.
Again, to be clear, this is a lovelly map, and it's creator deserves the simple appreciation of that map. The original artist also deserves their rights to be respected, not merely as a matter of ettiquette.
Now my question would be, does this sub then permit the posting of unlicensed, uncredtied, derivative works?
Just looked it up. It's "Charmonman Regular", apparently. I've been using it for ages, but have no idea where I first got it from. Looks like it's available for free online from a bunch of different places.
You may wanna look into butler - it's the itch.io commandline tool to upload builds. I'm developing with Unity and I've built a Unity Build script that auto uploads my builds to the platform. It's relatively quick to set up and then it's just a bat script basically. If you want I can give help you get started there.

Also I don't think you can be on too many platforms. Every platform you hit exposes your tool to more people, which gets you more sales. But yeah, the question is whether it's worth the work given the amount of people that buy there. I think ITCH is definitely a good choice.
Hello u/msgdealer . Is there a plan to support complex languages (included in standard Unicode) when Godot 4.0 is released (which will have a support for these languages) ? I never could use ancient languages like Egyptian, cuneiform, etc... the letters just didn't appear.
You might be able to get a lot of them by installing an European keyboard option (or a more specific language). You switch easily between your installed keyboards (on Windows) with the Windows Key + Space.
That gives you access to á ä ã à etc directly from your keyboard with no additional steps needed
If you install a Danish keyboard you have more options directly from the keyboard without needing alt codes or copy/paste.
Hmm, it does look a bit like that. I used this https://azgaar.github.io/Fantasy-Map-Generator/ to generate the landmasses and as a starting point for biomes, etc.
This is what I ended up going with, mostly because I got to thinking about how one would write it and it sounded fun. Here's what I came up with: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/549063144/
You can click the "see inside" button at the top right of the page to look at the "code." It's kinda poorly commented (I'm not a computer person so I didn't comment it as I went, just threw a few haphazard explanations on there before linking it here haha) and it's all in Scratch's pseudocode. Your mileage may vary with understanding it depending on your familiarity with scratch. I'm fairly satisfied with the results though. Now I've got just to do another 80 flowers or so haha.
>Given that, I'd start by doing a few tentative rivers from your tallest mountain range out either to the coasts or to your inner sea. Rivers can flow to north or south of your main central range. Hills and other mountain ranges will funnel your main rivers , creating large river valleys.
That's not a classic layout vs redesign thing. That's just the sub's CSS style.
There's a checkbox on each subreddit's sidebar that says "Use Subreddit Style." (This may be a feature of Reddit Enhancement Suite)
Check that box and it makes the page much prettier and more usable but is NOT the trash redesign that everyone (myself included) hates and bashes on /r/beta and /r/redesign.
Thank you! It's such a fun program to play around with.
I started trying to make better looking maps about a month ago using these brushes in Photoshop. Before that I would just draw some rudimentary sketches in a notepad so I would have a better idea of logistics in my stories, but they were really awful lol.
So I have two useful improvements to suggest.
The first is to export as a svg and do editing in illustrator. It's much easier to delete elements like roads, water, etc in that program. You don't have to do any tedious magic wanding. You can export as a png. You may have to find what resolution and anti-aliasing settings work best for your exporting.
The second, if you're going to stick with photoshop, is to use the color range tool. It's much faster than magic wanding everything you want to remove. The color range tool leaves little jagged errors though. So before you delete the selection, you should use "refine edge" to feather by 1 pixel, and expand the selection a small amount.
Either one of those saves a lot of time by skipping the magic wanding. The ideal solution would be if we could export without the background and water directly from Watabou. I'd submitted a request like that. Fingers crossed.
I like itch.io exactly for this kind of thing - sole dev indie projects. I don't know what the negative things about the site is, but I can imagine it gets a bad rep for the quality of a lot of games on there. However, I have no issue with it and if Itch is where it's at, it's where I'll buy it.
I can see three errors in those paths:
There should be ":" after the first "e"
There are double "//" after "assets", it should be "/"
You are using Windows, so file paths should use "\" but Wonderdraft shows them with "/" which uses in Linux.
I don't know how to fix any of this, unfortunately. Try this discord chat. The developer usally answers.
Sure :)
The buildings are a mix of the official Wonderdraft assets included in the base package + the official premium fantasy package: https://www.wonderdraft.net/p/packs.html#Fantasy
The only custom asset used is the wonderfull tree clumps - which can be found here https://cartographyassets.com/assets/5293/tree-clumps-for-wonderdraft/ (Big thanks to u/AdrianRWalker :D )
I bought my copy through https://www.wonderdraft.net/ and when I click "v1.1.2 update available!" wonder draft closes. When I reopen it it still says "v1.1.2 update available!"
Is there another way to update?
The dev didn't build the Humble Bundle sale page, they're just using the service as it was the one that the most people wanted (they actually surveyed which service to use).
Have you go ad blocks on or something that could be blocking the humble bundle widget? You literally just click 'Get Wonderdraft' in the side bar or go Here, then scroll down to the Humble Bundle widget, enter your email address and select your payment method.
Wonderdraft is currently 29.99$, and 100% worth the money imho. Just have a look around the subreddit at how many different styles it accomodates, you can do world-scale, regional, city and even battle or dungeon maps. I've seen cool space maps too :P A nice GPU helps, you'll find the recommended specifications here!
i know you already got the assets from ish_joker, but to answer the question about how to make them into assets you basically had the right idea. If you wanted to go a little quicker, you could divide the original image into a few pieces that result in a good grid of symbols (the linked image doesn't break well into a good grid as-is), and then use something like https://ezgif.com/sprite-cutter to slice the grid up into batches of .png files. I'm sure photoshop has a utility for this as well, but I don't have PS. Affinity Photo has an "export persona" that allows batch exporting using slices, but it's not ideal for large 'sprite sheets'....it's not bad, it's just not perfect.
Thanks for your answer! I can't think of any situations like the one you describe, but when I run hexcrawls I like to know exactly how big my hexes are. (I'm not very good at maths so I use a hex calculator.)
Your hexes are, as you rightly estimated, huge! Assuming the apothem (r) of each hex is 20 miles, each one has a total area of 1,385.6 square miles (mine are usually 127.3 mi^(2)). This makes your map even more impressive, because everything seems to match the scale you're working with!
Bravo!
Always happy to help! Hope it works out.
Also, if you want a neat suggestion for generating maps, check out Azgaar's Fantasy Map Generator. If you mess around in the settings by turning the map into a pure landmass map and turn off the coastal effects you can export it as an image which works perfectly with Wonderdraft.
Try giving Azgaar's map generator a swizz, randomly generates a world, useful for ideas for shapes, coastlines, political borders etc.
Have you tried https://azgaar.github.io/Fantasy-Map-Generator/ ? It looks almost as pretty, and is quite customizable, but not everything can be tweaked. It's also totally free.

They had one! But stopped making it. Etsy has some weird looking crocheted ones but that’s it. Looks like they had them as of a few months ago based on when the reviews were left. I’ve been watching this listing for it to come back but no luck.
ETA I just emailed Gund to see if they have info on making more of them. I’ll update here if there’s anything promising...
I do have published content for both ebooks and paperback! Not sure what genre you prefer, but my current series is MG fantasy, a lot like Artemis Fowl. That series is complete, published, and the first book is free. You can find it here.
I’m currently working on a new fantasy series that’s for an older audience, for people who like authors like Patrick Rothfuss, Brandon Sanderson, Brent Weeks, etc. and this map is for the second novel. First one is close to publishing though! It will be available in paperback or ebook
