Yeah... thats definitely some harrowing information. I sometimes forget that it is owned by CBS interactive.
I doubt that they will be able to think of anything that will keep them going. Even if they played like myspace and did a full site redesign and repurpose, I think they just have absolutely no relevancy to the majority of internet users nowadays.
I've been keeping an eye on Libre.fm for when last.fm is no more.
Wow, I had never heard of The Echo Nest, last.fm really missed an opportunity by not doing something like that. Last.fm is used extensively in a lot of software for artist bios and such since the data is basically free, so they don't really profit off of that. The most recent news about the site was that they were kind of pairing up with Spotify to provide extra info, so they may just start selling that API access, who knows.
I'm the same way about scrobbling, I have been checking my page less and less as I find better places to discover music, but not being able to scrobble is still an instant deal breaker for me.
I would like think that a lot of people will be able to move on from last.fm pretty easily if it goes since there are things like Libre.fm which can serve as a data gathering tool, but it is a bit rudimentary.
If you download copyrighted content, regardless of the method, it's considered piracy. Whether or not you're okay with that is for you to deal with.
The download button in there for non-copyrighted content, and so users have the option.
If you're worried about it, you can check out royalty free music from sites like Libre.fm.
It seems like this happens randomly. If you keep refreshing you will see that sometimes its hidden sometimes its not. But I think im done with it. Moving to libre.fm. I used this guide to move my scrobbles to there and it worked. If you follow that guide make sure you use archieved versions of the code.
>>just a different way to log playcounts
It is. It's fork of old audioscrobbler sourcecode. You can use it to store backup copy of your playcounts, there a lot of howtos on the web. Here for example.
And type http*<em>s</em>*://libre.fm, it should works
libre.fm already supports scrobbling and streaming. You can import your scrobbles from last.fm to it, or for software that supports it you can scrobble to both at once.
Rather than creating a new project to include or replace libre.fm (it's already had more than 125 million scrobbles) we'd love people to suggest and help add new features to the software that runs the site.

Fellow music stats fanatic!
Well, as far as alternatives go, the biggest one is Libre.fm. It has MUCH less scrobbler support and the site is more or less useless for artist discovery, but it does stat tracking fairly well. It can also be self hosted and you can import your data from last.fm. So at least there exists an alternative, even though it is a bit basic.
I just found out about it yesterday, but doesn't that have some privacy issues, as you are literally giving permission to a third party service to track the songs you are listening to. I found some open source self-hostable alternatives like listenbrainz or libre.fm but I don't know how do they perform compared to the proprietary last.fm
For people interested in music stats, consider opening a last.fm ^(or ^libre.fm) account.
I do like that it provides a counterpart to last.fm in terms of composer vs performer. I track composers (Bach, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, ...), but it is also nice to see the performers too (Argerich, Richter, Grimaud, Pollini, Hahn, Perlman, Mutter, ...).
It is a solid replacement for last.fm
last.fm is a Gnu project so privacy issues are non-issues with it.
You don't even need an account to use it; just click listen

Yeah, pretty much. With tmux, you can have multiple terminals open in the same terminal, which by extension allows you to have multiple terminal apps running in the same terminal.
Now, on to the explanation of the setup.
Top Left - Cover Art. Uses a script that uses w3m's image displayer to display cover art saved as "/tmp/cover.png". The cover art gets put there by a script that runs on song change in ncmpcpp. The script (called art.sh in my dotfiles for ncmpcpp), will scan you nusic directories, and process the currently playing music for cover art.
Top Middle - ncmpcpp. Uses the config "config-rwb" in my ncmpcpp dotfiles.
Top Right - ncmpcpp. Uses a config called "config-lyrics" in my ncmpcpp dotfiles.
Middle - Cava. My config for it is in my dotfiles. Note: I have literally 0 smoothing enabled because I can't stand it. I get really OCD about the precision of visualization, so you'll have to go through and change it if it annoys you.
Bottom - Tail. It tails the last 5 lines of my log for mpdscribble, which is a program I use to scrobble my music to libre.fm. (Here's my libre.fm if you're curious about my music tastes.)
As for the positioning of the tmux panes, they're specifically sized for my screen resolution (1366x768) to give the most room for the visualizer. You'll have to play around with the pane sizing. If you want, I save all my pane positions for tmux with a program called tmuxp, so I can upload my tmuxp config if you want.
Sorry for the wall of text, and I really hope I helped you out.
There is a site, https://libre.fm, backend is GNU FM, aims to to be the foss to last.fm, using the same API, etc.
Am not a spotify but a quick search seems to suggest can't use custom urls with spotify for scrobbling etc.
Open source versions of Last.fm. Libre has been around for a while but Listenbrainz is just getting started.

No huge reason, I'm mainly just interested in trying them out for a while. I've been looking at the APIs (for example, Libre.fm API allows you to delete scrobbles). I've also been brainstorming a website that might make use of these services so I want to get a feel for how they work/what their features are.
Ahh, but it *is* a case of sending the scrobble data elsewhere. I *do* want it to go somewhere else (e.g., libre.fm, or my own server running GNU FM), and I *don't* want the other service to have to build a similar system. What I want is for *spotify* to implement a method whereby I can have it send scrobbling data wherever I want it to go, from their end. Thus my request for exactly that: to directly allow scrobbling to anywhere.
Since I recently discovered that many are not as free software hippy as I am:
It's largely filled with Creative Commons licensed music, and I believe all music must be under a free license to be included.
