If you're on iOS, I recommend http://overcast.fm. In addition to autoplay, it has per podcast speed adjustments and a really cool "Smart Speed" feature which skips over silence in the podcast. It's especially helpful for the less well produced shows.
I'm on iOS, and I use Overcast for all my podcasts. It's a great app overall, but I love the "Smart Speed" feature in particular. The web-based player is also handy when I want to listen on my work computer's speakers.
You can use any podcast player. When you buy the back catalog, there will be an RSS feed you can add to the player to access everything.
I’m a fan of Overcast (http://overcast.fm/) due to the SmartSpeed which strips out silence intelligently to listen faster with a barely perceptible change.
I use Overcast for a number of reasons. The interface is WAY nicer, in my opinion. It has really convenient buttons that let you skip 30 seconds back/forth. It also gives you the option to speed up playback without distorting the sound. I didn't even realize I wanted that feature until I tried it out.
Actually, the initial reason I started using a 3rd party app was that I wanted to get podcasts out of iTunes. Syncing between the phone and iTunes on the PC was cumbersome and always seemed to create problems. Mostly I just want to sync my listening progress so I can pick up listening on any device. Overcast makes this easy because they have a web interface.
If you use Overcast.fm, you can share episodes with timestamps. Something like this: Mike Hurley showering praise on the 5by5 network
Get it on iTunes or an RSS feed or something and I might give it a go. Side note, it's name is the same as the podcast app Overcast which actually might be a bit too weird for me since that's the app I use.
Hey man. Thanks for this! I tried this with Bill Simmon's The Rewatchables podcast, and my client(s) only pulls the latest 50 episodes of the feed. Any ideas?
Unless you're streaming to sonos, I suggest you try almost any other app that's dedicated for podcasts. While Spotify isn't bad, it's not (yet) on par with dedicated apps that let you customize skip ahead duration or have adaptive skipping (e.g. Tap once skip 30s, tap twice to skip 30s + 60s, etc.)
My personal favorite for iOS is Overcast
My fav for PC is MyPodcasts
I would like to add Overcast.fm to the list for the following reasons:
As mentioned previously by /u/joeld/, you can share with timestamps: https://overcast.fm/+FSEAOJM/20:48
and sync between Web and iOS: pick up where you left off.
Overcast also:
...Overcast/1.0 Podcast Sync (6 subscribers; feed-id=...
You need to grab a podcatcher. If you're on a windows box I can't really recommend anything, but (Downcast)[http://www.downcastapp.com/] is my favorite podcatcher, currently. Though, Marco Arment is working on (Overcast)[http://overcast.fm/] which I expect to be quite good. :)
