People who REALLY want to play nowadays but can't find any machines near them will sometimes buy functional metal pads that you'd see on the actual machines, and then hook them up to arcade emulators, or something like StepMania. If you want to just play something that looks just like DDR but don't necessarily care for using your feet and are fine with using your fingers, then you can play StepMania with your keyboard. I downloaded a few songpacks and I have a lot of fun with it! It's a great time killer.
The stepmania subreddit is also relatively active too, and is a great place to read up on where to start and what songpacks to get. /r/stepmania
Not sure if that website is the original mayflash I'm thinking of but they (mayflash) used to be the better brand of Video game usb adapters for pc. I assume they still are but there are more premium brands with nicer aesthetic designs these days. As for your dance pad I don't think mayflash designed or built it this website is just selling these products in wholesale.
As for buying another, You can try this redditor if your lucky they still have it https://www.reddit.com/r/Stepmania/comments/41q13v/help_with_mayflash_tx4000_pads/cz49hzp/
or you could try this one although it's not specifically for your pad but for the tx1000,2000,3000 models so it may work for yours or at worst you'll need to re arrange the pin out on the cable coming out of your pad to make it work.
and lastly it looks like you can make your own if you have some basic wiring skills. no soldering required. https://www.stepmania.com/forums/input-adapters-and-controllers/show/5493
I see a lot of people suggesting DDR, and I wanted to throw out there is a PC freeware version which uses community-made step files if the console ones aren't doing it for you. If you're so inclined you can make step files for songs of your choice as well! Stepmania
Judge 3 is way too lenient compared to the arcade. If you want something that's close to ITG, you'll have to use judge 4.
SM Judge 4 / ITG
Marv: 22.5 ms / 21.5 ms
Perfect: 45 ms / 43 ms
Great: 90 ms / 102 ms
Good: 135 ms / 135 ms
Bad: 180 ms / 180 ms
so you can see Judge 4 is pretty close.
If you want DDR timing windows, in addition to selecting judge 4, you'll have to go to the folder where SM is installed, go to Save/Preferences.ini and change the following lines from:
TimingWindowSecondsW1=0.022500
TimingWindowSecondsW2=0.045000
TimingWindowSecondsW3=0.090000
TimingWindowSecondsW4=0.135000
TimingWindowSecondsW5=0.180000
to
TimingWindowSecondsW1=0.016667
TimingWindowSecondsW2=0.033333
TimingWindowSecondsW3=0.091667
TimingWindowSecondsW4=0.141667
TimingWindowSecondsW5=0.225000
This is further explained in https://www.stepmania.com/forums/general-questions/show/586 Keep in mind that if you're trying to AAA stuff, the DDR timing window for a perfect is much smaller than it is in judge 3, or even judge 4.
Stepmania! It's an DDR emulator basically, but with a bunch more functionality. Easy to find the old songpacks on the high seas as well. There's a few different USB pads out there, not sure who's making them nowadays.
for anyone who dosen't know what it is because I sure as hell had to look it up.
also wut... > This guide assumes that your PC is running in Japanese locale. If you have not switched your locale to Japanese yet
Would love more raspberry pi rythym games, seriously a shame that Stepmania dosen't work on the pi. I'd love to try this game, though I think I'd get a bit lost in translation.
My local machine has Lone Digger on it (it's an easy 11). I'll try and ask around if someone has the simfile.
As for Highscore, Gpop made a great simfile for it in "original pad simfiles 2"
link here
have fun with it!
If you can find an arcade anymore, there is a chance that one could be there, or possibly tucked in the back of a pizza shop.
If you are craving those DDR vibes, check out https://www.stepmania.com/ it's a free DDR clone. Pretty sure you can even find a usb game pad for that authentic experience.
Yep it's easy to figure out! Stepmania's pretty easy to interact with you just copy song packs into the Songs folder in Program Files.
It comes with DDR Extreme songs. You can find more packs online (DDR, ITG, etc.)
I assume you used this method: https://www.stepmania.com/forums/input-adapters-and-controllers/show/282
I too have that when I was stuck in windows 7 64bit but not useless to me on windows 10 sigh...
I think the key thing is the 'Allow Unsigned Drivers' would help a lot in the process of windows to work the driver and adapter for sure...
For more specific instructions:
To get latest 5.0 (I recommend this) click this link https://www.stepmania.com/download/ click the button that says the name of your OS, run the thing that downloads, follow the directions.
To get 5.1 click https://github.com/stepmania/stepmania/releases click StepMania-5.1.0-b1-win32.exe if you are on windows, and StepMania-5.1.0-b1-mac.dmg if you are on mac, then run the file that downloads, follow the directions.
StepMania is an open-source DDR clone. There's a StepMania subcommunity dedicated to creating levels filled with crazy mods and interface screws. This particular fan-made chart is aesthetic as fuck.
With ZIV you can download whole DDR archives of simfiles. Use with Stepmania 5.
Look around Amazon for a PC DDR mat, pay attention to reviews and pick up what ever is best within your price range. You can pick up some dirt cheap ones but with the price comes the quality.
I recommend the PC (also works on Mac or Linux in case that is unclear) option over console because of greater access to the songs you want and better options such as good latency controls. The only benefit a console has is the plug and play aspect with it more idiot-proof. :)
Most people seem to use 5.0.12 or 3.95, ~~but I'd recommend 5.0.12 since it is the newer version.~~
I personally don't really use themes, but I have seen some people using Simply Love.
I'm not really the person to ask for controls, but I primarily use the arrow keys, with the WASD keys bound just in case I need to Hand. There are better control schemes out there, though.
EDIT: Apparently SM 5.1 exists too, so that's actually the newest version.
I have an old Konami mat that had the exact same problem. I was able to get it to work yesterday with this fix:
https://www.stepmania.com/forums/input-adapters-and-controllers/show/483
Some notes:
Hope this helps. Happy Dancing.
Ah yes, this is true!
OP, it sounds like you were looking in control panel and seeing your pad listed as a joystick. I'm not on my PC that I use for DDR right now, but these are basically the steps to open the calibration/testing dialog that is built right into windows 10:
https://www.howtogeek.com/241421/how-to-calibrate-your-gaming-controller-in-windows-10/ (I'm thinking there's a faster way to get to the dialog at the very end, but that is what you're looking for.)
When my old PS2 mats are hooked up I have to do the up+start+select trick in order to get them registering as button presses. But this little built-in windows feature can show that they are working (behavior/controller mode has changed) if they are the type that supports the up+select+start fix. And if the fix does change the way your PC sees input from the pad you'll have to remap your controls in Stepmania.
Here is a link to some drivers that will hopefully help you out if the button-pressing fix still does not work for you:
https://www.stepmania.com/forums/input-adapters-and-controllers/show/483
Not sure if you're into the Miku/Vocaloid side of Camellia, but many of the Vocaloid collection packs have at least one or two of his songs charted up, usually for pad play as well.
https://www.stepmania.com/forums/song-packs/show/295
(I can go thru my files and find out which packs have Cam songs if interested, just ask!)
A little late on this, but originally a friend directly sent the pack to me and he just now shared with me the original source - https://www.stepmania.com/forums/song-packs/show/5528
Sorry for the delay!
Soft pads definitely still exist, you can find them all over online stores for really cheap! Also if you want to have an arcade-like experience, there are inexpensive high quality metal DDR pads that are still being manufactured today! You can play every DDR song ever released (as well as thousands of custom songs) through Stepmania, which is a free open source DDR clone for PC.
If you're interested, I'd highly recommend the FNF minipack for Stepmania, that way you can play the polished version already ;p
Plus, Stepmania has more difficulty levels and other improvements, you might like it! If you decide to check it out, and have any questions, let me know and I'll help out
This looks like it might be hacked arcade data, which would be piracy.
There is no official DDR on PC, the closest legal alternative we have is something called Stepmania. You can get the official DDR song packs for it on zenius-i-vanisher.
There's a pretty nice in-depth guide on how to get started stickied in this subreddit, but the tl;dr is that $50 will get you a soft pad, which is good for beginners but becomes unplayable once you reach an intermediate level, or i$50 might get you a used hard pad if you're extremely lucky and happen to stumble upon a crazy deal.
Then you can hook up that pad to your PC and play a DDR simulator called Stepmania.
They might not have the exact songs you're after, but if you've not already grabbed them Gpop's Vocaloid Project Pad Packs (scroll down) are a great collection of well-made simfiles for pads, with a good range of difficulty levels.
Dance Dance Revolution. (That's the original game name) The program I use is actually stepmania: https://www.stepmania.com
They've actually more recently created a new version that I haven't upgraded to yet. https://projectmoon.dance
It's all FREE as well.
technically speaking, ITG 3 doesnt exist (it was cancelled years ago). its just stepmania with a custom look. since stepmania is just a DDR clone with the ability to put whatever maps you want in it, you can put whatever simfiles you want, DDR included. in fact, you can find every DDR simfile on zenius-i-vanisher for download.
Unfortunately, distributing pirated copies of official software is illegal, and asking for it here is not allowed.
Consider downloading Stepmania for PC as a free, legal alternative.
https://www.stepmania.com/forums/general-questions/show/5562
According to a reply in this thread it looks good. Honestly stepmania is pretty quick and easy to setup...I'd just do it, plug in the pad, config/map the keys and see what happens tho.
I have that pad, I know for a fact there is no USB control box for it, so you'll need to DIY I used this guide at stepmania.com forums to make one and to be working great on StepMania. May not be the best solution but works what you have now.
You can access the website, all you have to go when you enter the website URL/enter the website is press the "Advanced" button, and press go to www.stepmania.com. They made it insecure so they can trick people to downloading a virus/opening a tracker's website, only to update it. If you want to get StepMania 5.3 Outfox, (the latest release) go to Projectmoon.dance. or go to this website, and go to build archives. I downloaded StepMania 5.0.9 from there.
Well, everything looks sufficient- drivers and updates are at most a few months old so that shouldn't be any problem (but updating is best practice). A note of curiosity, is your monitor using HDMI for the audio signal, or a 3.5mm wire?
Anyways, with the information provided I believe you had a problem with your extraction process. Please follow this link to the official download and get the Windows installer again. Make sure that you're installing to a folder you have permissions for (if you're not the admin of that machine). I suspect this reinstall will solve your problems, and I'll be here for next-steps if it does not.
Yeah you need the raw input files to get the pad to work without problems. Just follow this link, the download is there! Keep in mind though that you'll need to run this exe before you play everytime. Just run it, don't close out of it let it keep running in the background and play like normal! https://www.stepmania.com/forums/input-adapters-and-controllers/show/12125
https://www.stepmania.com/forums/general-questions/show/586
Judge 5 is slightly tighter than arcade DDR. (In Simply Love, it should show as an 84% Timing modifier)
Edit: I did my maths wrong, Judge 6 is tighter. Now I gotta nuke all my scores and start fresh lmao
https://www.stepmania.com/forums/input-adapters-and-controllers/show/483
I have to use this fix for my computer every time. Keeps everything as a grid instead of being seen as a controller as well so that shouldn't be an issue.
Do you do anything to map it already?
yes ive used it. yes its trouble hahaha. now here's the rub, it works out of the box with stepmania sure. if you have the same as mine, stepmania 3.9 that is.
the most convenient thing is to play 3.9, which is actually still pretty darn good besides some hiccups with recent charts, or play on linux, which will work with sm5 with no trouble.
if you do want to run it on windows, you have to install some old ems ps2 converter drivers, download ppjoy and play in safe mode, as described here.
hopefully at some point ddr energy fixed the issue and this isn't actually your issue, but given you have the one with the 4 way connector as well i have a feeling it is.
https://www.stepmania.com/forums/input-adapters-and-controllers/show/1451
These forum posts might help you troubleshoot your situation. I don't own cobalt flux anymore so I can't get as specific as I'd like to, but at one point I got deep into its guts due to a persistently bad left arrow. My problem was a damaged wire. Even if the damage is not visible to the naked eye, if you have a multimeter, you should be able to narrow it down from there. Good luck.
The easiest solution is to turn on the axis fix option. Options -> Input Options -> Advanced Input Options -> Axis Fix
https://www.stepmania.com/forums/input-adapters-and-controllers/show/21365
Whoops, I forgot the obvious thing (duh).
Are you sure you bought a dance pad for PC and not a PS3 variant? The PS3 pads typically don't cooperate.
A quick Google search gave me this forum post of someone asking for files to convert PS3 pad into raw input. Maybe try that?
Hopefully that works for you.
https://www.stepmania.com/download/
Make sure you buy a dance pad with a USB connector or an adapter so that it will actually work with your PC (a lot of used dancepads out there were designed for PlayStation or XBox consoles, which have different plugs). After the game is installed, you'll need to configure your controller within the game's settings menus, then download songs to play.
I think you can only use stepmania to play from your computer. I never really tried using a dance mat so I don't know how to pair it and stuff, though.
https://www.stepmania.com/download/
also, you'll need to find and download the songs manually.
cmiiw, sorry!
Hey, sorry these folks are giving you a tough time, it seems you're honestly looking for help.
Best thing you can do is practice. It might actually help if you practice with some rhythm games like (https://www.stepmania.com/) where all you're doing is pressing up down left right on time with the music, that should quickly train your muscle memory and not really overcomplicate it with various other button presses.
Good luck!
Add the stepmania theme forum to the 'useful links' section please.
And this theme also looks very nice!
Do you have any songs installed on step mania? When you install stepmania, it doesn’t come with any songs you’ll need to download them! Here’s a guide you can follow: https://www.stepmania.com/forums/songs/show/26369
This fixed it for me. Hope its not too late!
https://www.stepmania.com/forums/input-adapters-and-controllers/show/483?start=40
You don't need to compile from source anymore, so the easier way to do it is to just go to the downloads page and download the linux version there. Once you have it downloaded, you can decompress it using the following command:
tar xvf ./path/to/StepMania-5.0.12-Linux.tar.gz
(replace ./path/to with the actual location where you downloaded the file).
That'll make a folder called StepMania-5.0.12-Linux/stepmania-5.0
. You can then start the game by going in the folder, and running the file stepmania
Ah, I knew Chris used to handle the CDs (from the FAQ) but didn't know he had a twitter handle. Thanks! It looks like he also has a website with some other contact info but that hasn't been touched since 2015.
It's in all of them, it should be in input options
If it doesn't work still you can use the raw input exe which maps your pad to the keyboard. Just open it then launch stepmania and it should map to abcd
I would personally recommend downloading the appropriate installer for your OS at https://www.stepmania.com/download/
For the time being 5.1 is in beta, and it breaks compatibility with some historical content (themes/noteskins), so if you aren't aiming for 5.1 for any particular reason I would recommend sticking with 5.0.
If you do however want to get 5.1 there are installers here: https://github.com/stepmania/stepmania/releases
It sounds like the file you downloaded was the source code, which you would have to build to start using stepmania. If you aren't planning on making changes to the code I would not recommend that route as it requires a significant amount more work.
It could be not registering the left and right axis correctly. There is a simple program I run with the ps3 mat to make it work, where you register the keymapping with a,b,c, and d keys. Found on stepmania forums. https://www.stepmania.com/forums/input-adapters-and-controllers/show/12125
1.Download Stepmania (https://www.stepmania.com/download/) 2. Download ddr packs for Zenious I Vanisher (https://zenius-i-vanisher.com/v5.2/simfiles.php?category=simfiles) 3. Buy a decent pad. I would do some research before making an impulse purchase. 4. Enjoy :)
Installation instructions:
This was about all I could find. That, and some a-hole on Youtube who apparently made one "so good" that he only gives it to people who (in his words) "aren't a c*nt"
I use XBCD for my setup and it works great (I'm running Windows 7). There are some guides online that you can check out (Windows 7, Windows 10) but setting it up might be a bit confusing if you're not well-versed with computers. I might also mention that, on Windows 7, I didn't have to disable any driver signatures, but explicitly running As Administrator is very necessary.
This all being said, if it's running well enough with JoytoKey then I wouldn't worry about it. I like to just plug it in and start playing without having to open yet another program but it's all up to preference. Have fun!
It's the former. I tried the "hold Up+Start+Select" trick and that didn't seem to work. I might've done it wrong, though. I found an AutoHotKey script that should help, but it's not working for me (https://www.stepmania.com/forums/input-adapters-and-controllers/show/483?start=0). I did it according to the tutorial, but whatever I hit JUST the right arrow, it shows up as hitting both right and left. Similarly, when I hit JUST the down arrow, it registers as both down and up. Left and up arrows work fine, however. My USB pad could be configured as a hat switch, which Windows XP may not know how to deal with.
