It's definitely not paranoia. Everyone should be taking steps to secure their privacy. You should check out and /r/privacy. I've learnt a lot from these resources. I was already interested in the topic of privacy before watching Mr Robot, but I was happy to see some of the privacy tools come up in the show, like Protonmail, Signal and a Blackphone, and also the fact that he doesn't use Facebook. I've left Facebook and Google now, and I use Protonmail instead of Gmail and Firefox instead of Chrome, with all the privacy add-ons from . I've installed Telegram and Signal for instant messaging. Also using BlackVPN, and trying to work out how to root my phone so I can get rid of google apps. Oh and replaced Dropbox with SpiderOak.
Someone isn't happy but the whole point in this post is to show reddit users favourite VPN and each VPN has a score of how "private" they are and i'm asking a question which could completely throw BlackVPN's privacy score out the window. Should I not ask a question directly relating to the article? And one which could chabge the article? But I guess I am the "dense" aren't I?
This is way I've always stayed with BlackVPN, open communication and pure privacy.
I'm glad they're sticking to not negotiating with the attackers, paying ransoms only shows weakness. I'd rather put up with downtime but knowing why rather than seeing the service go out of business by throwing money to all these bullies.
BlackVPN located in China. Yeah, your 'backdoor' is safe there, alright. The People's Liberation Army would be most interested.
lol...
iVPN might be a possibility, however you have no proof anything out there isn't "backdoored" in some way, despite their claims...
I take issue with the author making it appear as if they've outed BlackVPN for logging, then providing a link to an article that BlackVPN have written in the interests of transparency.
I would be interested to hear /u/blackVPN's response to this.
Although they claim to no longer keep connection logs, they do say this - which I have questions about (as a privacy newbie):
>Instead of keeping connection logs to deter abuse, we’ll rely on reacting to incoming abuse reports by temporarily blocking access to those sites and services that are being abused.
>We may also monitor connections to the IPs being abused in order to locate and ban the abuser. We’ll keep the monitoring in place until the abuse stops, usually just a few days.
Does this mean that they will be monitoring/identifying the user in real-time, as opposed to retrospectively through logs? I don't quite understand the identification process.
NordVPN is better. It’s based in Panama, has more and faster servers and works better with Netflix (just a bonus even though this post is kind of anti Netflix). Both has a no log policy and 256-bit AES encryption. BlackVPN is based in Hong Kong which isn’t as good as Panama for this sort of stuff among other things.
And, I had to laugh at the comment's section of this article, where some nauseating imbecile played the 'child porn' card, as though child pornography is an issue of censorship, rather than criminality. Ludicrous red herring.
>why is it hiding this information? what else is hide?
Its not hiding anything.
BlackVPN charged their policy regarding logging and the spreadsheet clearly states its in Hong Kong.
The CyptoStorm link doesn't mention any VPN at all, so not sure the point of that article.
EarthVPN has a red box for logging so that looks accurate.
And yes anyone that solely goes off this spreadsheet without doing any of their own research is an idiot, the guy that makes it even says so on his website.
"No VPN (or any security system) is perfect. Please be sure to research and choose carefully based on your needs and threat model."
I used to work for HMRC. After a few days training tens of us at a time were let loose on customer data. We were warned not to abuse our power and look up famous people (earnings, addresses, etc.) and that, if we did, we'd be disciplined or fired. The first thing most people did was look up their favourite actor/actress, pop singer, etc. Never any consequences. We used standard PCs with functional USB ports. I could have walked off with hoards of personal data (fuck off GCHQ - I didn't).
Data leaks either via systems misuse or hacking are inevitable.
If you're a UK citizen you should immediately start using a VPN. Check out for advice on which. I'm currently using NordVPN but may switch to BlackVPN.
I have no experience with either, but I assume MacOS has a decent solution for OpenVPN, so learn how to install and use that, check out a VPN company, and read their setup instructions and it should be as easy as specifying a .conf file which would be available upon purchasing a VPN.
Check /r/VPN and /u/ThatOnePrivacyGuy's content, website etc. for some unbiased reviews and what VPN to choose.
I personally use BlackVPN which works well for me.
BlackVPN is a bad VPN provider. They're Hong-Kong based, crazy expensive and keep logs for 7 days (check this link: )
Honestly, I've no idea why anyone would go with them, as there are much much better VPN providers out there.
Nord's got server problems in more restrictive countries (say Germany). Mullvad, Private Internet Access, and BlackVPN are all good ones. Private Internet Access is lcoated in South Korea and they wiped their servers when the government came to make sure they did not accept bitcoins (in South Korea that is).
Why Firefox Nightly? It sends reports back to FF. I wouldn’t go with that one. Just use the plain FF version. There are alternatives to HTTPS Everywhere, which work on the beta as well. Did you edit you config in FF as well? Really important. I would go with a paid VPN which also offers DNS. Privacy wise Mullvad, iVPN, AirVPN, BlackVPN are great. What about a cloud? Are you using one?
BTW, ProtonMail is now also for free accounts available on your desktop. Check it here.
Puh. 100 euros... I'm on NordVPN but don't experience any kind of problems to get the support. I only had one encounter with them about the OSX app, and why isn't it compatible with Mavericks, but other then that no problems whatsoever. I'll check out BlackVPN to compare it, but just wanted to add that Nord doesn't have problems oftenly.
If you're only after streaming (in this instance) then use the lowest form of encryption, you only want to mask your IP, the encryption part is useless in this case.
Some things to try with PIA...
Change "Connection Type" to UDP rather than TCP.
Try lowering the encryption to the lowest possible available.
Found PIA, BlackVPN, IPVanish and to all have good speeds from the UK to US, have reviewed all four.
()[]. You can buy a VPN for a few €/£/$ per month and that will give you an IP in the USA. You can at least sign up but I don't know how easy it is to get a US PayPal account or a US CC (maybe some fake CC services?). I made the same with Spotify and the BBC iPlayer. You can also get rid of GEMA bullshit on youtube if you are German.
"All VPN services have a moral and legal obligation to prevent abuse."
That's pure bullshit. Imagine a gay user from Saudi Arabia watching gay porn on the Internet through your VPN. Would you help the authorities with their "moral and legal" witch hunt? Ohh noes, think of the children!
Thanks for reminding me why I'd never purchase BlackVPN.
No, this doesn't read like a sales pitch.
"High quality and attention to detail" - Except for their deplorable website. Obviously.
And you used one or maybe two servers. Plus your attested speeds couldn't be any more vague. This doesn't denote thorough experience with the service. Instead, it makes me question the validity of your intentions and methodology here.
Everything else you listed off can be gleaned from their promotional materials. Ex. "This VPN works great on Mac, iOS, Windows, etc." So you used it extensively on all four including "etc."? Hmmmm, okay. But how about some actual details.
What I got from this "review" is that you admit to barely testing BlackVPN, that you can parrot back a bunch of their marketing speak, that you needed to sound slightly neutral so you added a few cons about their website, oh and that you overpaid for this service based on your self-limited experience with it.
I'll stick with my VPN, thanks.
I used a dirt cheap special for NordVPN - speeds very variable, but support is quick when you ask for help and I paid $30/y so not complaining. I trialled BlackVPN (was very good, but a touch pricey - however that was a long time back now) and Cryptostorm (I like their token idea, but probably overkill for non-Snowden types).
I don't tend to recommend PIA because it seems to be thoroughly astroturfed, plus the whole US based thing. Others do, so take of that what you will.
BTguard, Private Internet Access, TorGuard, , IPVanish, ItsHidden, Faceless, BlackVPN.... none of them store logs. If someone wants more:
Which VPN Service Providers Really Take Anonymity Seriously?
OP asked about server, not provider. The provider is what's important in almost every case.
For example, something like BlackVPN that's based out of Honk Kong has US servers. If you're on a US server and the US want want your information because they caught you pirating Frozen 4, they have to go to a Honk Kong based company and try to get your information, in which they will (theoretically) get laughed at and ignored.
For that level of security, you're looking at TOR running under TAILS or similar. And even then, not sure you can be truly "safe" from the government(s).
For casual use, look at and make decisions from there.
I've used NordVPN, BlackVPN, , Cyberghost and Torguard at different times and for different reasons. If you can choose a service with a "streaming/dedicated IP", you can set up US Netflix/Hulu/etc with it.
Go with one that offer refunds/trials to see which you like, and go from there.
Agreed. These VPNs can resort to other marketing/promtoional techniques, not these which are so blatant fake and unprofesional, BlackVPN may be the best, but this review has no impact on me at all. Maybe on a n00b it would..
decent review but its too expensive for all the features that it offers, there are better services available for the same price as BlackVPN. Their service should be good right now since they don't have too many users on their network. Thanks for the review though.
Look up "thatoneprivacyguy" or something; he runs a site comparing heaps of vpns and has reviewed some.
I've used a few, and generally recommend you trial the ones your interested in as they often do offer monthly plans.
If you were to push me for names: I'd say Nord seems ok/middle of the pack, BlackVPN are premium, cryptostorm appears seriously paranoid in a good way, PIA is a US based company who I suspect astroturf too hard.
Narrowed it down to BlackVPN.
Simple criteria:
Had 3 left after this, selected the only one which donates to EFF.
From testing I noticed BlackVPN seemed to allow the most multi-session/connections so you may be able to max out with them although I can't guarantee that.
VyprVPN also have a reliable network even though they are a bit on the pricey side, but I guess you get what you pay for so you may consider them.
BTW: I'm shaking my fist at you for those speeds ^^
I'm curious about BlackVPN too.
In terms of software, I strongly prefer the open-source OpenVPN; I would simply refuse to use any closed-source/proprietary black box software since no one (except the programmers who compiled the code) has any idea of what that software is actually doing.
You won't get 1:1 ever since there is technological cost. A lot of providers max out at 1 or 2 mb/s too.
BlackVPN has a fairly good Toronto server and they have a free trial through their Android app. Nordvpn is crap don't go there.
damn really, so theres definitely an issue thats beyond either of us. it started happenig after the 1.2.6 update for me too. well thats good to know because i was wondering if if was just something with my phone or vpn service. im using BlackVPN, hopefully the OpenVPN app releases an update soon to fix this
BlackVPN??
I'm new to vpn's, but I feel I need to get one. I most concerned about the most privacy and security I can get, maybe a little geo unblocking here and there. I don't torrent. My ISP doesn't currently do IPv6 at all so I'm wondering if BlackVPN is the best one I can get until my ISP decides to upgrade? The only thing I'm kinda concerned about is the email address for signing up though. I've been looking at vpn's for days now but I'm so freaking new to this....
I'm thinking of subscribing to BlackVPN.
I am trying to understand though. 2 questions
Why is its # of connections limited to 3, what are those "connections" for... is this number of devices using my account at any one time? Or what. I am only planning on setting up the vpn on a single computer, but it's on a local network shared with 2 other computers and other devices. Is this going to be a problem
And why is the VPN certificate being issued to CloudFlare shown in red in the chart please?
This is for torrenting, no TV watching. I want to be able to start this up at night and disable it during the day.
I've used BlackVPN and NordVPN. I was never able to actually use Nordvpn and support was unable to solve my problems. BlackVPN is a solid vpn, its located in Hong Kong which is known for its democracy and internet freedom. BlackVPN is a bit expensive for me but it was consistent performance and speeds. I would choose BlackVPN. Never used Cyberghost though but, haven't heard many good things about it.
Looking for first VPN for torrenting
I'm in the US and looking for something just to torrent with. I don't care much about general browsing nor streaming, just absolute anonymity while torrenting on my PC.
Services I've been hearing a lot about:
PIA: But with all of this talk about their logging, I think I might steer clear.
BlackVPN: Seems like all of the reviews on Reddit are from the company itself.
NordVPN: Pretty sure I've read enough bad reviews about p2p speeds to stay away
Mullvad: Probably what I'm pulling towards the most, but I'm not sure they offer the fastest torrent speeds. And it's $$
What do you guys think of Mullvad for torrents and is there anything better?
The issue is, what's preventing Congress from passing a law forcing data retention? Then PIA becomes no better than any other VPN provider in the US, since they are subject to US law. They would have to keep logs. Look at who's leading us, it's business before everything for them, no reason this couldn't happen and fast. I wouldn't want to be tied to a PIA account or any US-based VPN provider if that happens.
Get a VPN in a country that's not part of the 5 or 9 eyes for that reason. I use BlackVPN. Not likely the US can demand information from some entity located in HK. MUCH more difficult for Congress to force a foreign body to amend their laws to please the US.
Aaah, phone. Adding the complexity of 3G/4G on top of the network can make it interesting.
My PC at home had a lot of dropouts on the Nord client. My phone has the BlackVPN client, and sometimes I see the client has shut down entirely and needs restarting - not sure what's happening there, but haven't asked their support.
I bought copies of Viscosity to make it easier to run different VPNs on different PCs. As I mentioned, it doesn't seem to disconnect, or if it does then it's a silent with auto reconnect and I haven't noticed the interruption.
Currently using Cryptostorm and BlackVPN at different places for different reasons, but my NordVPN connection (via their own client) seemed to drop out at random sometimes, but not always.
BlackVPN are pretty good and have a presence on reddit
Not only have they been useful here but I've used their UK streaming service to watch UK TV and iPlayer in Egypt on holiday as well.
I am using BlackVPN. Functionally, it works fine and they had great support helping me set up. There's really no way to know if everything is kosher on their end, but you just have to make a judgment based on the information available for a VPN and hope for the best.
Hi all, I recently got into the security area mostly around penetration testing intending to raise the awareness in our company and help some clients. I'm an experienced software tester/manager more familiar with Windows than Linux but I'm working on that.
I'm in the market for a paid VPN for Windows / Android / Linux and read up on the various providers. There is no information in this subreddit that is less than 6 years old so I wanted to ask what you'd recommend. NorthVPN and BlackVPN seem to be the best of what I could find - both seem pretty secure and are not based in the US, UK, etc. I'm not interested in Netflix, etc but in using it for work and training. Any suggestions or stay away from xyz welcome.
Gaming VPN with good throughput and stability in Europe/Scandinavia?
Tried BlackVPN for two months and was fairly happy, but I did get massive lag spikes twice or thrice a week and sometimes my connection would even drop for half an hour on both their Netherlands and Norway servers so I cut business with them. Considering trying again now a few months later but looking for other choices and opinions as well.
I have 75/75mbps and would like to get at least 25/25 with VPN if ping and stability is acceptable.
Cheers!
I signed up to BlackVPN the other week. Seems like one of the more obscure options, but accepts bitcoin payments, based in Hong Kong, servers all around the world, has a mobile app so you can encrypt your regular mobile browsing (I must say, the Netherlands get so few online adverts via soundcloud/youtube compared to us!).
I haven't experienced any significant speed difference, even when accidentally leaving the VPN active whilst playing online games.
Even though Privatoria do some dodgy things and what not, I have a backup account with them at the moment and all is fine, connects and everything - password has numbers and symbols in it too. Haven't used their support so cant comment there however they are keen to help on facebook - Asked a couple of questions on their page and got an inbox with specific answers to my questions though as i said haven't used their support.
I was looking at BlackVPN a while ago too but then reading about their dropouts / service / site going down with no user being told, in what I personally saw I skipped them plus there were too dear.
Side note - I've also personally used PIA on mac & PC with no issues. Love to see proof of them copying files and that though. Also think BlackVPN didnt fully have apps for all devices just andriod and rest were manual configs / using third party apps, could be wrong been a while since i looked at them.
Their support is far from perfect but I receive similar useless answers from other VPN services (e.g BlackVPN).
Servers are working well in various countries... Just do not use the current Android app since the implementation of Firebase is a massive battery drain.
Definitely, your ISP can see you're using TOR. Don't use a VPN based in the USA tho, or the 14 eyes. Choose one with their servers and business registered in a country that doesn't comply with the USA in the event of a valid subpoena, like China, Venezuela or France. BlackVPN is based in Hong Kong and is one of the few VPNs that aims to prevent invasive three letter agencies. They won't respond to a court order unless it's a valid subpoena signed by a judge from the city of Hong Kong. And they have yet to have that happen.
>Each country has a different list of content available but the USA has the largest library of movies and TV shows. You can view the full country comparison on () but here is a short summary:
Country | #Movies | # TV
USA | 4593 | 1157
Canada | 2562 | 623
UK | 1586 | 442
Australia | 1585 | 443
Brazil | 1672 | 562
Germany | 1440 | 328
France | 1485 | 387
Spain | 1042 | 236
Netherlands | 1494 | 390
United Arab Emirates | 1436 | 328
One tip for your comparison chart:
What about a new column with "explains how they enforce no logging policy".
Some VPN providers provide information on how they prevent IP's from being logged. See this post by BlackVPN for example:
It gives some faith and trust in that they at least know how to enforce no logging policies. I think it would be nice to have in the comparison.
I've used a (free) trial of BlackVPN, and at the time I considered it to be a premium service with a suitable price tag. I did like their geoblock bypass on all the servers as a standard feature, and their speeds for me seemed to be quite good (but I was limited badly by the failings of my available internet connection.)
Here's the link to the entire thing ->
I'm going to try out BlackVPN which recently came out with an Australian server.
Depending on which games you're playing (ie where the server is located), a VPN could possibly improve your latency but most likely will only make it worse. A few people on Whirlpool swear that VPNs improved their latency and closed socket problems with WoW back in the day.
I got a really cheap deal on a NordVPN 2-year sub; it's about as good as I paid for it. None of my connections are fast enough to notice slowdown though, thanks to overcongested cell phone towers and rotten copper.
I did trial BlackVPN for a while, their TV server setup was/would be perfect for a home router - Netflix and Hulu routes to the US, BBC routes to the UK, and everything else routes to a torrent friendly country. It has changed since I trialled it, so check it out yourself.
The "wild card" I almost went with for general VPN stuff was going ot be cryptostorm - I just got a better deal with Nord. It is a lot more focussed on the privacy/anonymity aspects, and has a free tier you could play with if you were interested.
I missed the OSX part - my testing was done on a Windows box with Windows clients. Might pay to check what VPN providers offer for a Mac. That said, I use Tunnelblick (open source, I think) on an old iMac with Nord configs just fine; and they are working on a native OSX client apparently in beta. BlackVPN suggest that as their client of choice, fwiw.
From the ToS of BlackVPN:
"If we receive a copyright violation notice from the appropriate copyright holder then we will forward the violation to the offending user and may terminate their account"
The only way to do this is to log. If you did not log, you would not know who had the VPN at the time and thus could not forward the violation to the offending user...
I know my nord account let's me have up to six simultaneous connections for the one account, regardless of where/what I connect from. Cyberghost had 3? I think. BlackVPN I think was 2. They are out there, just might have to poke around their websites.
I can almost guarantee they are, for some reason when I'm using Hulu/Netflix with just my unblock-us DNS changer I'm constantly buffering at the most random times, then when I use my VPN (BlackVPN). The buffering completely goes away, even though my overall D/L speed takes a hit, due to the VPN use.
BlackVPN does NOT keep activity logs of any kind. We never have and we never will.
All that we "log" is the shared IP address of our VPN server that was used at the time. That IP address will also be shared by multiple users at the same time since our Privacy VPNs only have one IP per server.
We thought this would be the best way to deter peadophiles and terrorists from abusing our service without needing to resort to monitoring our customers traffic in any way. It seems people prefer to have their real IP address logged and shared with Google and for the VPN to use proprietary monitoring tools instead. Any VPN monitoring all their users traffic is only one court order away from logging it too.
I kindly request that you retract that comment that we keep activity logs.
Really? You must have missed the memo. It's funny that you mention BlackVPN, because if you check my post history you'll see I was just having a conversation with them on this very Subreddit just a few days ago. Why not go take a look and see what it's about? What's that? You've been too busy creating accounts just to down-vote me and post for the very first time? And trying to claim that PIA is secure without actually addressing the issue at hand? Why even bother posting if you are not even going try?
If you're going to torrent traffic, especially with a satellite connection, you really should be encrypting 100% of your torrent traffic.
It's not uncommon for contracts to have specific stipulations about bittorrent traffic, or for companies to have a policy of throttling you if they find you doing it.
Either way I think you're going to need to call them up and see what's going on.
In the future, if you're torrenting data, use a VPN connection. (personally i go with BlackVPN, but there are a lot of options out there)
Get a VPN.
Odds are they're looking at the packets, and when they detect torrent traffic just shut you down. Encrypting your connection will stop this.
BlackVPN is awesome.
I don't work for them or anything, but I've been using their services for a few years now.
> BlackVPN - Can't find enough info about their country specific servers.. They have a 'USA' server.. what does that mean? Multiple cities, or 2 severs in the same datacenter in the same city, etc..? Can I choose which city I connect to?
You should connect to our closest USA server depending on your location. We have servers on the East coast, West coast and central USA. Contact us for details for a specific server but our generic setup should work fine.
You can use software with proxy stuff like proxify, costs a lot of money though. It's much cheaper to get a UK VPN like BlackVPN, it makes all of your connections go through there. Choose the single server option.
If you want to watch Netflix in Germany as well (I just suppose you're American), I'd go for BlackVPN
Buy the US VPN and you can watch Netflix or whatever in full speed as well as the music on YouTube.
Speed has been really good. I used it for torrents a couple times before I got a seedbox and it was great. I also use it for streaming video with BBC's iPlayer, and it rarely hangs up or gives me any trouble.
TorrentFreak did an overview of a few VPN services and how they are with privacy and anonymity, and it might give you some ideas of other good VPN services. The only two in that list I've tried are BlackVPN and Private Internet Access. PVA worked well enough, but I don't remember whether I had any issues with bandwidth on it.
BlackVPN with an IP from the netherlands for torrenting.
It's just 5€/month and if you get a referral from someone who is using it its just 5€ / 3 months
blackVPN
//fixed currency: 5€ are about 7$ fyi
///another edit:
You might also want to look into seedboxes if you are into torrenting. They are not expensive either and protect your privacy as well.
I don't currently use any VPN services except for those provided by my university, but in other discussions both StrongVPN have been recommended. No personal experience with either, though.
This happened to me too but using BlackVPN with Openvpn although qbittorrent was the culprit. It didn't happen until their latest update for me. I received an email from my ISP and did some testing and qbittorrent leaked it. As previously stated you need to bind it to your adapter.
Pay for a good VPN. No question.
Hard to research which are "good". Most recommendations are just shady referral link.
DYOR starting with to compare.
(I feel comfortable adding my rec as I have no referral links to shill)
BlackVPN was good for me for years. Easy app built for Fire TV too. I ditched because of where they're based, in Hong Kong, not very privacy centric.
Switched to Mullvad (based in Sweden or Switzerland... I forget) and extremely happy. Little more difficult to set up on Fire TV, though. You'll use "OpenVPN for Android" and load the config files manually.
Once it's set up, though, works perfect.
Yes I used BlackVPN for a time. Worked well had configs for DDWRT Windows Linux etc. Though I found their support left something to be desired when it came to other devices. So I switched to Boleh VPN no complaints so far.
BlackVPN. It has many countries, including Lithuania, which is outside of Fourteen Eyes. Original article is called “Five Eyes” on Wiki.
They accept bitcoin, no logs, no tracking, etc. very happy with them for a few years.
I use BlackVPN. They included countries not even in the Fourteen Eyes. I use Lithuania servers for this reason. Once it’s set up, you won’t need an extra app & can be toggled in Settings.
There are fast ones. I use BlackVPN. It’s the fastest one I know of that doesn’t log your traffic. I get over 100mbps when using it.
A lot of people roll recommend VPNs that may look fine, but most of them log your traffic. With BlackVPN and other that don’t log, your web browsing is truly private.
I usually use BlackVPN. From what I can tell, it's one of the fastest ones on the market and has a decent 0 logs policy along with a decent rating on thatprivacyguy's website. Check out r/VPNreviews for a more providers.
Yes, a VPN should be good enough. Also, your bank’s website probably uses HTTPS anyway making snooping pretty difficult or even impossible. And even if you share an encrypted WiFi network with people using the same password, people still can’t see your traffic. The password doesn’t actually have anything to do with the WiFi encryption. Most routers just make it seem like that. (That’s of my major annoyances with consumer WiFi routers)
Edit: I usually use BlackVPN, if I need one.
I only tried via Tunnelblick, and only used their dutch and swiss country servers and double-hop connections to/from these countries. The poor speeds surprised me really, given the great stories from others in here. With tunnelblick and vpn connection to , I easily max out my 200mbit connection. I've used BlackVPN, and got performance slightly better than what I got through ProtonVPN. Regarding the payment : I paid through Paypal, the money was charged to my cc. When I wasn't happy, I asked for a refund from the PayPal site (as PayPal prescribes)
Can anyone give me a Boleh v. BlackVPN review?
Alternatively, can anyone give me a VPN that checks all the same boxes as these two (Full privacy, no logging, good internet jurisdiction, no name given)
If you like a vpn that is not in the 14 eyes, I would suggest BlackVPN located in Hong Kong. They do not keep logs and offer really good speeds. Although, they are a bit expensive for most people. I've tried NordVPN multiple times but, it has never work for me. Sometimes couldn't connect and sometimes internet does not work after connecting but, your results may vary. PIA service used to be amazing but, they are doing a revamp of their team so service haven't been the best.
Hi guys,
I've been looking at the spreadsheet from that one privacy guy and I think I've narrowed my potential vpn providers down to 4.
Out of these 4 I'm thinking of going with Boleh but I would like to know your opinions. I'll mostly be using it to stream things like netflix and do a bunch of p2p.
Advice would be appreciated, thank you.
Hi there. I am only just now learning about VPNs. I have very limited technical knowledge, so be gentle with me please. I've read through a bunch of posts here but I have to say they're pretty head-spinning!
I have a Macbook and an iPhone. I'm moving in a few weeks to Italy from the east coast of the US (will be there for six months). I'd like something that will let me access US versions of sites, be relatively secure, and perhaps do the occasional streaming from US netflix/hulu/etc (though that's not the ultimate requirement). Oh, and Spotify!
I've read that Mullvad and BlackVPN might be good, but I don't know if they're complicated for a VPN-illiterate person like me to set up, or if they're more than I need.
Any advice? Much appreciated!
BolehVPN: They provide pretty good speeds. Yearly is pretty expensive most vpn provide a discount for yearly members but Boleh didn't. After nearly a year of using them, I stopped and cancelled because performance deteriorated. Also, their client area and support page was messy and confusing wouldn't recommend for new users
NordVPN: Never worked for me. Support couldn't resolve issue. Do not recommend
BlackVPN: Speeds were pretty good for me and they offered quality customer service.
Mullvad: Their speeds used be not that good but, recently they been performing very well. They scored top by Thatoneprivacyguy. Fast and good price of 5 eur.
You would be fine with any reputable VPN service if you want to torrent. I think BlackVPN is a bit expensive.
If you want to watch HK Netflix, I advise you to contact with BlackVPN first whether their servers work with Netflix or not (since Netflix do block shared IPs most of the time).
I use BlackVPN. I wanted something not based in the US and that wasn't part of 5 or 14 eyes or on the "enemies of the internet" list (a lot more info on the "eyes" lists here list for your own criteria. FWIW, PIA is US based and if you check /r/VPN there is some question about how seriously they take privacy. IPVanish is US based as well. I know a lot of people in subreddits like to act like experts in all things, but when you see people bragging about using a VPN then find out what VPN they are using it becomes pretty apparent people are just using any old VPN without knowing much about the security/privacy background of them. I would take everything in every subreddit with a grain of salt and a starting point for your own research.
I have done the following:
By doing this, you lock down on your privacy. If you don't already know about the NSA leaks, read up about Edward Snowden and the NSA leaks
I've not used any of the ones you've mentioned.
I suppose BlackVPN could be faster but I run a seedbox during non-peak hours so as long as the connections are stable and reliable, it drips through eventually. I only do off-peak to get around throttling from "excessive use"; VirginMedia will throttle your connection after uploading only 750mb in an hour.
I've used BlackVPN for a couple of years and rarely had a problem. I'm not fussed about US Netflix so I only buy access to their non-US or UK VPN servers. You can set it up on as many devices as you want but only connect on 3 devices simultaneously.
They get a good write up on as well.
Hello, I'm looking for a VPN:
I don't know too much about them but am beginning to do my research. I really just want it to protect myself from torrenting. I was on piratebay the other day and when I attempted to download something it redirected me to another page where promising huge fines and fees in Canada (where I'm at) if I didn't protect myself with a VPN.
I know that was probably a cash-grab, but it did get me thinking which is why I am here.
I have looked at the comparison chart and am thinking of trying out BlackVPN. Any other suggestions? Also, if I do use a service like BlackVPN which is based in HK, would I them get HK Netflix?
Sorry, I don't really understand how a lot of this works. And thank you!
What you might mean is a "split tunnel" where the VPN doesn't carry data for certain sites.
That said, BlackVPN has a setup which detects Netflix, BBC, and Hulu and automagically redirects them to the US/UK for you. They're not cheap compared to most, but have a sale once a year (Balck Friday, heh).
Fair points.
BlackVPN is Hong Kong based.
From their site:
>In 2012 we moved the company to Hong Kong to avoid secret court orders to install backdoors & monitoring. We found it interesting that Snowden chose to go public in Hong Kong… Snowden's reasons were "Hong Kong has a strong tradition of free speech. People think China, Great Firewall … but the people of Hong Kong have a long tradition of protesting on the streets, making their views known … and I believe the Hong Kong government is actually independent in relation to a lot of other leading Western governments." Even Julian Assange said "Our own political and legal analysis of Snowden's situation was that Hong Kong would play it by the book…" to keep "…its reputation as a country which has a strong rule of law when it is under a lot of scrutiny, a desire to not lose face from China and to not look like the US is pushing them around".
I like BlackVPN. They seem solid in speed and have a good selection of servers. Not the cheapest, but they have one sale a year (Black Friday) which is 50% off. Bonus feature is their "privacy" servers will auto redirect Netflix and BBC to the correct country.
Have used Nord, got it dirt cheap two years ago and thought it ok. Got better towards the end, but haven't yet decided if to renew or not.
I like the idea behind Cryptostorm, but can't decide if it's legit or not - they seem to try really hard. Probably ok, will likely get some tokens there if I don't renew Nord.
PIA I both like (their proven no-logging) and have concerns with (5eyes, astroturfing, no netflix). YMMV.
Thanks for this review, GFr33man! I have similar thoughts... but I'm happy with speed.
After all, I love BlackVPN. Yes, not the cheapest one, but pretty good and trustworthy.
Today I've made a small Docker image for security & network testing with BlackVPN:
… Hope somebody else could reuse it! ;)
Wow guess my memory is better than what I thought since that's the last I've heard of BlackVPN (other then reddit), just curious since you now monitor to prevent abuse / torrenting on non p2p / servers - for up to a few days, are you open and honest about this to your users? ie, informing them of the monitoring / what's going on?
Nonetheless welcome to the logless VPN club, always good to have more.
