This game is so awesome.
And payment model is plain genius, just like on Smash Hit. I don't know if they make enough money by that model but I like it so much that I spare 2$ even if I don't really need extra premium features.
Oh, a 2d version of this? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mediocre.smashhit
I'd write where the inspiration came from just to be upfront about it.
Looks good though, gonna try it out as soon as I can.
It's made by Mediocre, the studio behind big hits like Smash Hit or Does not Commute.
So fans probably see this as a no-brainer, because the other games were pretty unique and well made.
I suggest Smash Hit, it's an abstract rail shooter where you smash glass obstacles to clean your way. Use some headphones, the shattering sound when you hit something is quite satisfying.
The game is free, with the option of making a one time ingame purchase that allows to start at checkpoints instead of going back to the start of the game.
I really like passing time with this one...

Oddly satisfying.
Didn't get into mobile gaming until I was in my 20s (so I can't quite relate on the "childhood" factor), but I remember Smash Hit being the first game to really grab my attention, and I still play it today. Mindless, arcade-style fun but lovingly crafted. Great visuals using only simple shapes. Solid soundtrack. No ads, too. And a single in-app purchase to unlock checkpoints.
Now I'm remembering why I'm so picky about mobile games. This set my standards too high lol
Smash Hit - It's a bit of an older title. It's an auto-on-rail ball-throwing game that's about smashing breakable objects as you go past. There's a modded apk available out there for unlimited balls which makes it chaotic fun IMO.
> I just feel like I'm getting punished by other companies because other people are being assholes.
Well, it's not really punishment, but if their strategy is not working, they do have to adapt or go bankrupt. It does suck for an average "honest" consumer, I can relate to that. At the same time, I also agree that some companies go over the top in their monetization strategy, resulting in a cash grab rather than fair payment, like Dungeon Keeper you mentioned.
For example a game called Smash Hit is a free game with very non-intrusive monetization. You simply pay for being able to save your game, or you will have to re-start from scratch. I still get to experience the full gameplay.
> These games cost a lot, but they also sell massive amounts, and the vast majority of them do fine with a standard game/ downloadable content model, but it's down right greedy to put freemium economies in them, and almost all of the games that use this model are already cash cows.
Are you sure about that, that they do just fine with standard model? I mean, from what I hear the costs of game making rise higher and higher, so I am not surprised many have to resort to such things.
Smash hit is kinda nice as well
Check out some of the games from Mediocre (Smash Hit, Does Not Commute, PinOut, etc.), they're fun, simple, free-to-play, ad-free "arcade" style games that you could probably beat in one sitting if you know what you're doing, but they each have a single in-app purchase for checkpoints (and unlocks some other extra features where available).
[Follow The Line](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.crimsonpine.stayinline] e Follow The Line 2
Kingdom Rush e suas variantes (as variantes são pagas)
Castle Defense e Castle Defense 2
Clash Of Clans e Castle Clash.
In Smash Hit you can break as much glass as you want.
Smash Hit and Does Not Commute by Mediocre games are both pretty good.

At the end of the day, the best games I played where the ones which did not try to emulate console gameplay:

I remember a game like this called Smash Hit
Sure! It depends on what platform you're using, of course (computer vs smartphone vs game console), but here are a few puzzle games:
Pathologic: browser-based game
Waterfalls: browser-based game
Quell: app for Apple and Android phones
Smash Hit: app for Apple and Android phones
TanZen: app for Apple phones (and Android maybe?)
Polybridge: for computers
Do you have Steam? It's a program that people use to browse and download games on their computer. Some games are free to play, while others you'd have to buy, but either way you'd have tons of options at your fingertips. I'd be happy to show you how it works if you're ever interested :)
(Edit: fixed a link, oops!)
Probably not this but most of your description reminded me of it.
no fighter planes or helicopters, but smash hit is great
