This app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.ivary.ContactsSyncFix Contacts Sync Fix deletes bad data from Google Contacts (typically meta data entered by poorly written apps) that prevents synching.
I've had that phone before. Contacts don't back up correctly if you have ICE contacts stored. Check to see if you have anything saved as an "In Case of Emergency" contact, remove it, then back up to your local storage again.
I've also used this app to automatically fix LG Contacts: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.ivary.ContactsSyncFix&hl=en_US
Many times, it's an issue with high resolution contact images. If you don't have many contacts, try to remove their images, or use some of the free apps to fix that problem. Here's one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.ivary.ContactsSyncFix
Try this app - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.ivary.ContactsSyncFix&hl=en
i was running into this issue a lot about a year ago, and this app fixed it every time. Apparently something to do with the ICE group, in my case.
The app even notifies you if it detects a contact sync issue
Ironically I had the same issue with my G3 and the last time it had synced was around the same date too. Anyways I downloaded an app on the play store called Contacts Sync Fix and it worked for me. There was an issue apparently with my emergency contacts.
Edit: here's the app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.ivary.ContactsSyncFix
Sometimes a contact can get some piece of corrupted data that prevents syncing. Usually when an app tries to add an app specific note, but sometimes it seems just totally random. Has happened to me a few times, and this app has always saved me: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.ivary.ContactsSyncFix

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.ivary.ContactsSyncFix This should fix it, if you can donate to the guy, because this issue has been going on on multiple android phones for a long time
I was having this issue. Fixed it using Contact Sync Fix https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.ivary.ContactsSyncFix
It found I had invalid groups (whatever that means) on some of my contacts, and repaired them. Sync started right away and completed without issue.
If you've done the bulk conversion Anthony spoke of... and still have problems try contact sync fix.... It's a free app...
Backups are no.1 with managing a contacts DB,start by logging into Gmail then drop down a gear to Contacts. Start editing there, there is a dup check too. Those changes will sync back to your phone. If you can't and it says it "can't at this time" you'll need this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.ivary.ContactsSyncFix be aware it may remove your ICE contacts.

Always keep a backup. If it's ok with you I'm going to ask you more detailed questions to narrow down what would be best if not I'll just kindly drop the conversation.
Had the same problem. Used this. Worked like a charm.
Try this next time it happens. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.ivary.ContactsSyncFix
