Don't Starve: Pocket Edition is for 2,99$. I'm thinking of it coz I've enjoyed Crashlands. Is it similar ?
You could try Don't starve, Crashlands is basically a imitation of Don't starve with some difference in mechanics. It's a broad indie survival game with a nice theme and permadeath. Makes for an easy tens of hours of gaming.

Is pretty fun, played it with some friends. It has a very interesting art-style imho.

• App struggles to get past the splash screen once it's launched. In total, I only got it to successfully get past this screen about 1 out of 30 times opening the app. Most times, it crashed to my home screen after a few seconds on the splash screen. I believe it has something to do with another app being in picture-in-picture mode, as the only time I got a successful attempt at getting past the splash screen was when nothing was in PiP. However, the app still has issues opening when nothing is in PiP anyway, so this might have just been a coincidence.
I was just about to quote the same thing asking the same question, but then I saw your comment and thought "Oh cool, someone already asked." Then I saw that /u/StarfoxNA never actually answered, and, well, if I had to describe how that made me feel using one word, I'd say: sad.
I know Don't Starve is kind of similar, but I've played the hell out of that and would much rather play it on PS4 than mobile.
You might like survival games Don't Starve or This War of Mine.
I googled and found it in the app store online even though I could not see it on my phone. I then purchased it online(on PC) and it remote installed it onto my phone. I AM STOKED!

Update: Runs beautiful! Worth noting is that I did not have an option to install it to my S4, only my S5 from work. I expect there to be limitations on the hardware right now.
I'm told that Don't Starve is good. I don't like survival games, so I haven't actually played it...

They are not really all sugary in their setting and tone but there's no real gore. Should be safe for kids of all ages in terms of imagery.

Pretty much all of the survival games have either energy, or "crystals", or long waiting times or IAPs. Or all of the above. It's mobile gaming we are talking about after all.
The only thing I can currently think of is the port of Don't Starve (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kleientertainment.doNotStarvePocket) or the port of This War of Mine (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.elevenbitstudios.twommobile) both of which are premium games without microtransactions. Crashlands (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bscotch.crashlands) is far-fetched, since there is not much survival in it.
I believe I played some survival games that are actually good, but this was long time ago and I do not remember the names. I might update this comment later if I remember.

I haven't played many crafting games. Don't Starve is one I like. But it doesn't have controller support.
Don't Starve. Premium purchase, no ads, no IAPs, no timers/stamina limiting gameplay time.
Terraria has an option for a Hardcore mode with permanent death. You have to turn it on. Would be kind of like playing Minecraft in survival mode (which is another option). Available as a paid version without ads or a free version with ads. No timers/stamina limiting gameplay time. Free version with ads has an IAP to unlock paid version with no ads.
This War of Mine. Premium purchase, no ads, no timers/stamina limiting gameplay time. IAP is for an optional expansion.
