Yeah, you can use the fingerprint scanner as the home button. I'll find the app and post it. Only problem is a I couldn't figure out how to use Google Now on tap while it was enabled.
Try this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jamworks.easyhome
Mimics home button functionality like the HTC 10 or Nexus the fingerprint readers. Wakes the home screen but may be a bit of a battery drain.
easyHome is great. Allows you to use the home button as a capacitive button. So simply touching the button softly performs the same actions as hard pressing the it.

I've been wanting this for a while too...its present on the Galaxy S8, you just rest finger on the sensor and it's straight to home screen.
However, there is an to use the home button as touch button, closest you can get to it atm: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jamworks.easyhome Edit- does not work for me on Nougat anymore. YMMV
I use a theme called 'Android 6.0' that makes the notification pull down, icons and settings menu more stock like. You could go further and install Good Lock, which makes the notification pull down and status bar even more stock like. I've used EZ package disabler pro to disable any apps that I don't use. I also use the app below which makes the home button function like a capacitive button.

Install Easyhome: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jamworks.easyhome
Makes the physical home button acting like a capacitive button (when the display is on). So by just touching the button you "go home" and it performs the same action as pressing it but it's far more conveniant to just touch the button instead of pressing it.
Is there a certain easyhome? I tried this one. It seems to work-ish. I'll have to wait for the 110 apps to reinstall after the factory reset to really test it.
easyHome works! Just make sure you've already set up Samsung Pay and your passcode, since those have issues while it's enabled.

Theres an app called easyHome that has the phone treat your home button like a touch button, if it gives you peace of mind.
Have you tried easyhome?
It uses the fingerprint senor to emulate a home button press. Works great!
You just need to slightly touch the home button instead of fully pressing it. I have it set to quick, so as soon as I touch the home button, it goes straight to the launcher.

I had the same happen i found an app called easyHome, it's maybe not for everybody but it enables the capacitive function of the home button so that you don't have to even push. You just lay your finger and it works. My only complaint is that it sometimes has to be restarted but otherwise i prefer it to having to push the button.
I think there's an app you can download to make it capacitive instead of clicky so you just have to tap it.
edit: It's this ... but from the reviews looks like people are having trouble getting it to work with the S7. Maybe worth a shot though
Try easy home. The older version had a feature where you can wake your phone, but it's been taken off for battery drain issues (I never noticed it) Give it a shot and just wait for him to update the app when the feature comes back! Really responsive dev.
Try the 'easy home' application in app store. It makes the fingerprint sensor register a push by using it as a capacitive sensor for push without a button push. My button works and i don't press it anymore because this.
I've had my phone for about a month and the first thing I noticed right away was how much I missed having all soft keys, and didn't really care for having to physically press a button to go to my home screen. So I found an app where you just touch the button and you go home. It works pretty well. Sometimes it stops working and I have to restart the app but it's a small price to pay. This is it here - EasyHome.
As a temporary solution while you figure the problem out, perhaps you could try Easy Home. It converts home button operation into touch mode using the fingerprint sensor.
These are the two that look most promising to me:
You have to press and hold the button (to grab the fingerprint) to unlock it with the screen off or you can try this app easy home
Edit: nevermind, easy home actually doesn't work when the fingerprint unlock option is selected
Easy home for Samsung. I use the app to make my home button press similar to that of One plus (just a small tap) so don't have to fully press it. I had it installed for a week and has been a breeze so far.

Easyhome will give you capacitive home button, and there a few options to make it do other things: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jamworks.easyhome
But I don't think you can unlock the s7 with just a capacitive touch.
1) Get the Galaxy Gifts from the Galaxy Store. There are a lot of great apps and deals that are offered for free.
2) Go to the Theme Store and get a Material design theme.
3) Then get a case and a screen protector like /u/drage636 said
4) Then get some nice apps from the Google Play Store:
a) EasyHome - This app makes you "touch" the home button rather that pressing it.
b) NoHeadsUp - Disables Lollipop headsup display notifications. You can configure a tiny notification ticker.
c) Package Disabler Pro - Get rid of the bloatware.
d) Nova Launcher - Get the Nova launcher and get yourself a nice icon pack. It's customizable (with pro upgrade of course).
5) Enjoy and good luck.
Use easyHome. Let's you use the home button as a capacitive button using the fingerprint sensor.

For longer life for home button,I use this easyHome. Now I can tap and not press down the home button. Found very useful.
Easy home creates a capacitive button
It's just the home button. The back and menu buttons are capacitive. Even that can be changed with easyHome

This app purports to, but I haven't tried it so I can't say for sure.
