Since I first started using Android with a Nexus 5 to now on my Pixel 2 I've swapped from:
What's stood the test of time
Check out Mail by Edison. I tried almost all mail clients on store and finally settled on this one. It's not very good on privacy but it's best looking mail client I ever used (and fastest)
2nd best imo is K9 Mail.
Email - Fast & Secure (beta) Completely free (no ads)
The app is super minimalist both in design and features and very lightweight. Tried most of the other top email apps and i always found them bloated with stuff i didn't need.
Just downloaded Email(Edison) and it looks like a full blown copy of Inbox. So far it seems fantastic. Here are images of it. https://imgur.com/a/LAJoQME

Same....Gutted!
I went to Alto after Cloudmagic shit the bed, and I've loved it ever since... One of the first apps I install these days.
The closest alternative I can find, or have used previously, is this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.easilydo.mail
Worth a shot, but it's no Alto. Interested to find if anyone finds anything better too!
I've been having this issue on my OP3, even after excluding Gmail from optimization. Now I'm using an app called "Email" by Edison Software, which supports Gmail and works flawlessly with Doze. I've never experienced notification delays with it. I recommend checking it out if you still have this issue.

I'm currently using the Edison Email app and I like it much better.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.easilydo.mail&hl=en
I use edison email, when you get a spam email it has an unsubscribe button up the top, followed by a trash all previous mail from this sender. Works on 90% of spam emails
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.easilydo.mail
I change from a iPhone X to a 6T to give android a chance. I will leave a list of apps that I was able to replace and not replace:
Replaced
Still Looking
Edison mail is a really clean mail client you can try out. It isn't bloated with random crap and just gets the job done.
Here's a link to the app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.easilydo.mail
Unfortunately its location restricted but APK Mirror hosts that APK. Here is the link
What are the features your are searching for?
I also used Maildroid and it was a full experience.
I transitioned to Aquamail and EasilyDo Mail and they are pretty decent. I use them because I use 3 accounts from different services.
Linkme: EasilyDo Mail, Aquamail.
Edit: Bot messed up a bit, here's EasilyDo Mail.
Thanks for pointing out. Had some strange issues with a calls and it newer occured to me that this could be caused by a phone itself.
For gmail issue - the only fix for me was to use other email apps. These are working good:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.easilydo.mail
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.office.outlook
You can use a 3 party email app to log into your other Gmail accounts. I use this One. So any Gmail logged into through here won't be logged in with the phone.
I've been using Edison Email for the past 18 months and I've been very happy with it, it's light, fast and I get notifications on time.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.easilydo.mail
It creates separate notification channels for each account. So you can turn off any one. It also won't add all your accounts to phone like some other email apps
I don't know why but only this email app supports edu mail ( I use it for my college mail). The rest of the email clients just redirect me to link that mail to my phone
Edison Mail has a built-in unsubscribe option in emails. It needs you to systematically unsubscribe to junk mails, but after a few days, it dramatically reduce the amount of spam you receive. Installed it on my wife's device who had the same issue than you and it worked pretty well.
I've been using Email by Edison Software. Pretty good, syncs multiple accounts and shows all emails together as well as seperating them by account. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.easilydo.mail
I've tried about two dozen Android email apps and nothing compares with Inbox.
Email by Edison is similar and it's fast, but it's still not a direct replacement. I caution you to carefully review their privacy policy before deciding. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.easilydo.mail
The closest replacement to Inbox that I've found (so far) is Edison. I would still prefer Inbox, but this is similar in terms of UI/function.
Does this include the site too?
I just got into using Inbox and like it 100x better than clunky Gmail.
To answer your question: Edison is the closest app I've found.
I guess people already beat me to it.
This is the only one I've found that lets me have a separate gmail account without switching phone account:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.easilydo.mail
Now if I could only find a calendar app that let me do the same....
Email by Edison is surprisingly good. The interface reminded me of Cloudmagic (Newton) plus it's free and it handles all kinds of different email accounts/services.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.easilydo.mail
So i decided to just try a free apps and found that Edison Email is pretty much bang on for what I wanted. Nine is also awesome but overkill for my needs.
Yeah I specifically use the Edison Software Email app to avoid needing to add my work email as an actual Google account on my phone. It's definitely pretty annoying that the OS is set up that way.
On Android, I use this app simply called "Email" that puts an Unsubscribe link at the top.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.easilydo.mail
Really useful when you want to quickly clean up your inbox from spam or want to optimize what you receive.
I recommended Blue Mail before but apparently it stores your data secretly without your consent (AFAIK). Someone told me about Email and I've been enjoying it since.
I can speak for a good alternative . Edison Mail here is very good and almost always reliably displays new mail in the Notifications.
Also, toggle on and off the Sync button from the Notification shade
Make sure that you are on Wi-Fi as well, since sometimes email apps tend to meter data connections and end up not updating.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.easilydo.mail
quite handy, been using it for sometime, notifications, notification actions, in-mail shortcuts (like an unsubscribe button on top etc..), notification badges all work great
Very recently started using it. The only little drawback is the more than average use of battery life which is not a deal breaker by any chance. Would DEFINITELY recommend anyone to try, its one of the best email apps I have used.
Here is the link to the play store version
Here is the apk hosted on apk mirror (app is region locked)
Yes Email by EasilyDo is really great, it's pretty new on android, so I imagine more features are coming. it's very good looking, which is a rarity for email apps, and supports multiple accounts, mark as read from the notification. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.easilydo.mail
Trying out this new email app, Email by EasilyDo.
Pretty fast and clean

Email (by Edison) simple yet feature packed.
Maybe grab Inbox For Gmail from APKMirror? Alternatives could be Spark or Edison Mail

I've been using this
I'm really liking Edison so far
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.easilydo.mail
Try this
No scraping needed..
I've been using this one:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.easilydo.mail
I've been using this app on Android. It's pretty similar to Inbox. It's been absolutely great.
I recommend email it has a unified inbox with colour coding so you don't need to worry about which inbox you're in.
I gave up. Use Edison for work/exchange account https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.easilydo.mail
I've been using Email for a long time and never thought about going back to the Gmail app.
I don't use an iCloud mail myself, but the app I'm using supports it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.easilydo.mail
I've heard good things about this one. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.easilydo.mail
I personally use Google Inbox.
Wrong app meant this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.easilydo.mail&hl=en
After the CloudMagic episode I am using Email from EasilyDo, beauty and works like a charm.
Using this one for a while now as it supports nested folders which a lot of clients don't seem to be able to handle.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.easilydo.mail
You should check out Edison Email
Another I've used is an Email app by Edison software. Not sure if you will like that though.
