Lots of people saying you don't want to do this but no here has actually answered your question.
So regarding displays, there are 2 things that affect battery life.
The first is the actual physical pixels (the pixels on the pixel lol). These can be turned off individually for black areas with an OLED panel to save energy (which is what they already do) but there is no "scaling" for these pixels. These pixels have no context about surrounding pixels. They are either on or off. You could use something like this (Pixel Off)[https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.anrapps.pixelbatterysaver&hl=en] and maybe someone one day will make a custom ROM where you can shrink the display and turn the rest off, but for now, I don't know of anything like that.
The second is the virtual pixels. This can be scaled to whatever the system tells it to. This resolution is driven by the GPU. Reducing this means the GPU has to "draw" less on the screen so it saves some power BUT it is marginal compared to the power drawed by the physical pixels.
Hope this helps.
You can also use tools designed to save power on OLED screens.
Doesnt save any power on an LCD, but the effect is the same.

Turns every second pixel black. I use it at night when driving because the GPS on ALL phones for me, doesn't go dim enough.
Well for example, Samsung's AMOLED displays consume a lot less power on black elements, for example if you use black wallpapers, because the screen turns off those pixels that are black. Additionally, you can use apps like this that generate schemes of black pixels as an overlay to save battery and activate AMOLED themes on apps (like Reddit is fun offers, for example).
>how much of a difference is there
To me as someone who I don't use my phone too often, this hasn't changed my battery runtime very much compared to non-AMOLED displays, but if you're using the display for long times a day it will make some noticeable difference.
Looked into it it's been a long time since I looked into it. The tool I referring to was used with Android devices and was called Pixel Off. I think it worked because it used a AMOLED screen. I don't think there is a similar tool for Windows because its futile since you'd need a OLED screen to take advantage of turning pixels off. If I can find anyone in the future I'll post it however.

Awesome. That's good to hear. I wasn't quite sure if it would work when I posted that variation. I found out what app to recommend from a reddit post.
Is it simple and easy enough to use? I imagine the only difference is that you have to activate the feature after you open PoGo instead of turning the proximity sensor on before with non-AMOLED phones.
When looking for what to recommend, I found something similar as another battery saving app that AMOLED phones can use that I am kinda jealous of: Pixel Off
Changing resolution doesn't actually impact battery life at all. This has been proven on multiple occasions.
The pixels don't actually turn off, they just don't operate as a singular pixel anymore. If you want to turn off pixels try an app like this
The battery consumption is almost negligent when you lower the resolution, each pixel still needs to be lit regardless of the resolution, it's just that with higher resolution there's a bit more processing involved. A 5% in battery saving is already too much.
You'll have more luck in reducing battery consumption by lowering the brightness and using apps that tun off pixels in a pattern that doesn't disturb the visuals too much. Like this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.anrapps.pixelbatterysaver
An app like Pixel Battery Saver will give you a little more life for very little in the way of lost readability (at night it works great) - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.anrapps.pixelbatterysaver&hl=en_GB
Change screen off to 15seconds
If This Then That to disable Wifi in places you wont be using it.
Battery life on the Priv is pretty awful and I can never get through a day with mine, I love the phone generally but I wish it did better. Lucky for me I love dark themes anyway.
I use this app to do something similar to what you're describing. Only works on AMOLED screens though. Might be worth a look :)
This is a great point, and is the reason for apps like pixel off or pixel filter where you actually turn off the extra pixels to reduce display power consumption. With these, however, you are still running the CPU/GPU at the higher resolution, so maybe a combination of one of these types of apps with a lower resolution would provide the most power savings.
Another trick you can do to improve battery life on any AMOLED screen such as the S6 is get an app that downgrades the resolution and turns off pixels. Since the S6 is a Quad HD phone anyway if you turn off some of the pixels it will save a bit of battery without looking too awful. Pixel OFF Save Battery AMOLED
How about using this along with https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.anrapps.pixelbatterysaver&hl=en ? This effectively turns off every 2 pixel in both directions? So this means 1/4 of the pixels will be displayed, thereby actually having the 720p res on screen instead of an upscaled image.
I've had good luck with Pixel Off Save Battery. Basically any pixels on your screen that should be showing black...it will turn off to save you battery.
While at Coachella I closed all apps, turned location/bluetooth/wifi/sync off and used Pixel app and I went a whole day and still had 50% left by night time.
Yeah, like I said though for that huge battery saving you have to turn up the setting to the max which does effect screen resolution a lot, but if you really need to keep you're phone going this is the best battery saver I have ever used. Along with the lollipop built in battery saver it can last a really long time!

TV Show Fav's widget has been the only one I've never not had on my homescreen.
I also love Google Play Books' widget and use it everyday. (Google Play Store's 'My Library' widget, to be precise).
Nowadays I also have the 1x1 on/off widget of Pixel OFF because I just got a Nexus 6 and it helps with battery saving and color correction at nighttime.
Use this this instead...

If someone wants to see what the heck I’m talking about, here’s the link.
I want to know too. Googled and this came up: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.anrapps.pixelbatterysaver&hl=en_GB
Is this it OP?
For Android...this app Pixel battery saver dims every other pixel on your phone to save battery.
Is this similar? Looks better too. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.anrapps.pixelbatterysaver
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.anrapps.pixelbatterysaver I have used it before and it works pretty well. Give it a try!
