I used this APK I downloaded it it using the APK Downloader extension for chrome I installed it on my shield and it asked if I wanted to upgrade using the APK, which I did, and it proceeded to install fine. I don't see an option for Application layout, like I do on the phone, however I'm assuming that's because it only offers one layout for the shield, It looks fine to me.
>Also, why is their web site so deceptive? There is no mention of pay until after you sign up and download
So um.....what do you think "Free" and "Premium" options are? Variations of that table are on a lot of pages, including the main features page. Or what "Free Functionality" and "Full Functionality" are? Like, sure, it could be clearer, but it's far from deceptive (and most of what they offer is free anyway).
I'm also not sure whether you're talking about mobile apps or PlexPass features or even mistaking a free feature as a paid one though (since that happens a lot).
Did you try Plex? Here is the Quick guide.
Set up Plex on your PC. Select folder. Install Plex on your smartphone. Now you will be able to stream video from your PC.
Have you tried Plex? Basically you have to set up a "Plex server" on your computer and then use the app on your mobile to view/listen to the content. I guess this is might suit your needs
Unified Remote is what you're looking for. But as others have said, it's likely better to install Plex Home Theater and use the native remote Plex makes for it.

The broken version is 8.25.028473. If you're not in the beta then you may have a different problem. You can login to your google account and go to the play store to see if it says beta there. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android
Don't you still have to have Plex Pass (or buy the app) to stream to a mobile device?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android&hl=en_US&gl=US
> Note: Playing media from your Plex library on mobile devices is limited (one minute for music and video, watermark on photos) until the app is unlocked. For full functionality, get a Plex Pass -OR- make a small, one-time, in-app purchase for app access.
Not saying it isn't worth it, but it isn't free for OP's use case.
No, Opera is a web browser. So you're probably watching Plex in a web browser. Go to the google app store and see if you can install the Plex app on your TV: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android
This assumes your Sony TV is running Android (like mine is). If so, log into your google account on the TV and the above link (when opened on your computer) should list your TV as a device where you can install the Plex app.
If that Plex app is already installed on your TV, then the Opera browser might be launching that Plex app, but to be certain, open the Plex app directly and don't use Opera.
You're wrong. Plex and PMS are two completely separate apps.
Plex: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android
Plex Media Server: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.mediaserver.smb
If you don't believe me, check your installed applications for your Shield in Google Play. You can even uninstall PMS.
plex hmm you mean run plex server from android?
you can run plex on it .. i don't
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android&hl=en
and you can run just about anything else in the google play store including Games, Video Apps, Kodi and productivity apps like GMail and word processors and whatever..
you can attach a full keyboard and mouse combo or you can run a mini keyboard or air mouse with a keyboard on the back .. you can also run game pads to play your games with.
its not sketchy at all its pretty dam amazing for $50 with 2 gigs of ram and 16gb rom and full 4k h.265
I am not promoting for that device its just the best one I have found right now for the price.. you could pay twice as much or more and get much less.
The only thing that is a bit ugly is the default android launcher but play has lots of them you can download .. or you can boot right into Kodi and bipass all of that and access your android apps from within kodi.
I figured it out earlier today, same problem. You need to install this app (no it's not the same as the plex app you have already) to enable the functionality. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android&rdid=com.plexapp.android
Once it's installed go back to your storage options in settings, and you will see this option: https://i.imgur.com/0Wr9Qf6.jpg
Once You enable that, just setup your options like direct access or with a password. Then your internal storage will show up under network.
If you haven't followed the thread, in the app when you run should be a button, Already Paid? Follow instructions.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android&hl=en
Note: If you’ve already purchased the app or have a Plex Pass, you do NOT need to purchase again! We attempt to detect your previous purchase automatically. If this fails, please select "Already Paid?" on the activation screen and follow the instructions to restore your purchase.
As /u/thefunkygibbon also points out, he also runs on multiple devices. In fact I just put plex on my 3rd Fire this past thanksgiving So about a week ago, and didn't have to pay again.
I'm also adding the email I got last time before previous fire, when it wouldn't activate properly: Plex Android Activation (Plex, Inc.) Feb 1, 9:36 AM
Thank you for contacting us. We’ve been able to verify your Android app purchase and have validated your account for you. Your app will pick up the validation the next time you try to play media. Note that you will need an active internet connection for the first validation.
Enjoy your Plexing!
And finally from the plex app on play store:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android&hl=en
Note: If you’ve already purchased the app or have a Plex Pass, you do NOT need to purchase again! We attempt to detect your previous purchase automatically. If this fails, please select "Already Paid?" on the activation screen and follow the instructions to restore your purchase.
As far as last night this is 100% correct. I have a room mate who uses my plex server / ChromeCast to cast. He hasn't purchased the app on his phone and can cast it to ChromeCast.
Also right off the play store:
Free functionality • Unlimited casting of photos and videos from the Camera Roll on your phone or tablet to Plex apps on Roku, Chromecast, Android TV, Fire TV, and Plex Home Theater (coming soon to Xbox One, Playstation, and other apps).
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android&hl=en
Can you install from the web?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android
Choose your ChomeCast as the install target.
So I am here - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android

But cant seem to find the Sign up for Beta page
We cannot make that incorrect assumption. Here's the Google Play Store listing, showing the new logo (at least for me.) If that doesn't show up for you, here's the link directly to the app icon, stored on Google's play-lh.googleusercontent.com
domain where all app icons are hosted.
The Client? If so, just install Plex from the Google Play Store...actually the same should be for the server, too.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android&hl=en\_US&gl=US
Of course you can always side load or use an alternate app store, too.
An app update was released that may fix your issue according to the changelog:
Plex for Android 8.4.1
Available on Google Play and the Amazon App Store.
FIXES:
Plex seems very popular, I need to try that. They have several Android apps but I presume the one I need is Plex: Stream Movies, Shows, Music, and other Media.
The reason gapless playback is so important is because of albums with tracks that are meant to seamlessly blend into each other. A lot of my albums are like this, which is annoying and ruins the feel of the album. I've heard lots of griping from Pink Floyd fans about this. As for a mobile version of Plex, this is the Play Store link. If you can't find it, it's possible it isn't available in your country or something. There's likely an apk for it on APKMirror.
If you navigate to the Plex app on Play store on a computer while logged into your account will it let you install it on your Shield?
It tells me it is compatible with all of my devices this includes my 2015 Nvidia Shield and my 2018 Mi Box S.

Can't you just control it from your phone with the shield? The Android Plex app is good, i haven't used the ios version, but it looks like it is exactly the same. I haven't used the casting function with a shield, but it works well with the desktop app, and the Chromecast version used to work really well, but after recent Chromecast updates the volume control sometimes doesn't work.
> I know for dvr you need to buy a subscription of a year for 60 bucks.
Not entirely correct.
Monthly is $5. Annual is $40. Lifetime is $150.
DVR will always be limited to Plex Pass, as it helps pay for the EPG data.
The mobile apps (including Android) are a 1 time in-app purchase of $5 unless you have Plex Pass. If you drop Plex Pass though, you have to buy the app.
>LIMITATION: Playing media from your Plex Media Server on the device running this app is limited (one minute for music and video, watermark on photos) until the app is unlocked.

Plex app for android is free, but you can only use it as a remote controller. You choose what and where to stream, pause, change audio and stuff, but can´t actually watch it on the phone.

Something like Plex works well for me.
Need the PC server and android phone client. Not sure if they make it for apple, but probably. Even works on my xbox360.
(I'm not affiliated with them in any way, just find it handy for streaming.)
> Does Plex have a remote app so I can use my Android Phone to start, stop and choose what videos play on my Chromecast?
Plex has an Android app that can cast to the Chromecast.
Plex Media Player is what I'd buy, but I have my own plex server. Probably not a good choice unless you have your own server or know someoen who does.
I think so...I mean when I search for it the only result I get is this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android
Plus, I downloaded the apk and tried to install it but was not allowed to as a same package with conflicting signature was found.
I can't put it better than the Plex developers here:
>The basic functionality of Plex is completely free. Some Plex Apps are paid and some premium features are restricted to those with an active Plex Pass subscription.
Again, if you think that explaination fis 100% within yours then fine, there is nothing else to discuss here. I think it can be made more clear (it being your comment) and better highlight the restricted/"premium" nature of Plex.
Edit:
And here is another example of where I don't think you and the devs line up, from their google play store: >Enjoy unlimited use of the free version of this app, and unlock its full functionality with a Plex Pass subscription -OR- a small one-time in-app purchase (see below).
<strong>Plex - free, but requires a £3.50 payment to use with a PC server</strong>
This app allows you to access a media server set up on your PC using the Plex Server application, downloadable from here. Basically, while your PC is on, you can access films and TV shows you have downloaded, with all the data such as posters, titles and such being sorted out by the app. If you have a large collection of films and TV shows on your PC, I'd say that using this is a pretty good choice.
<strong>Unified Remote Full - £2.99</strong>
I use this app in order to turn my PC on an off remotely when I'm at home, so that I can access my Plex media server. It also allows you to remotely view your screen, use mouse/keyboard actions and much more, as well as allowing you to set certain actions to an NFC tag. At the very least, check out the free version here.
I've been playing with a lot of things lately:
CloudPlayer (with my Google Drive which works OK but I hate having to deal with all the organization which Plex and Subsonic handle, but it has the best player IMO)
iBroadcast (which works OK - not fantastic, but about the same as using CloudPlayer but free).
I'll have to give Astiga a try...
Link me: Plex
edit: linked for my self :)

It's called Plex. It's a media-server you install on your system that provides the ability to stream all your media to your own devices.
The most apt way I could describe it is basically: It's a personal Netflix server.
You have your media, you install the PMS (Plex Media Server), you point it to where your media is - it scans it, matches it (assuming you have it properly named) and gives you rich metadata experiences on your mobile devices/streaming boxes/computers/basically any internet connected device with a decent ecosystem.
It provides on-the-fly transcoding in case your file(s) are incompatible with your device(s). It is free, though there is a "plexpass" version which has some more features like offline sync, and some beta stuff.
You install the client on your android, your iOS, your roku, your xbox one/360, your ps3/ps4, various smart tvs, and the list basically goes on forever. Linux, Windows, OS X, RaspberryPi, etc, etc.
Then you stream it to yourself. Where-ever, whenever. As long as the server is on, and you have internet.
/r/PleX
umm, could you not use their Plex app? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android
While i'm not too familiar on the steam aspect of things I can attest to the other two. I currently stream from a Plex Media Server to my OG rpi B HTPC. My pi setup is:
OSMC w/ Kodi (new xbmc)
PlexBMC add-on as main navigation/streaming
PlexHelper add-on (cast from phone)
wifi adapter (came with the pi)
HDMI -> VGA adapter for my OLD projector (1680x1050 res)
USB Sound Blaster X-Fi to Receiver for 5.1 surround
I can honestly say I stream over wlan 1080p movies WITH DTS flawlessly, despite degrading to xVGA. All other media streams perfect as well; tv shows, music (320kbps), standard quality movies (dvds). You stated that you don't like the XBMC interface however there are several skins that can change the look, OR use the default OSMC interface (completely different). I will say this though.. the movie/music menu lags a bit.. possibly cuz it's attempting to populate the 200+ movies/ 100+ artists I have BUT this is no issue when I browse via Plex App from my phone and cast to the pi.
As for gaming.. well maybe that's the project your willing to take up as your wanting something to code. I have been looking into RetroPie to make my pi an emulator as well, but I have not attempted to do so. It's not steam but it's a start. I feel like 3/4's of the work is already there, just hope it fills your needs.
Some questions,
> With Wifi Router >> Did you know that while on the same network ( WIFI ) the laptop can be controlled by a Plex app phone (Guide)?
>Without Wifi router, but wifi on the laptop >> Create an Ad Hoc on Windows
>> Then control with a phone as mentioned above.
It doesn't cost money anymore on Google Play. They've restructured.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android
Yes. It is totally doable.
Step 1. Download Plex Media Server
Step 2. Configure Plex Media Server (PMS) with the stored data. You do not need to move data to the computer HDD. Instead, link the data with external HDDs, and just make sure they are connected when you want to play the content.
Step 3. Download the Plex app on your tablet from Google Playstore.
Step 4. Plug the Chromecast in your HDMI port, and connect it with your WiFi. Make sure the computer, tablet and chromecast are on the same network.
Step 5. Run PMS on your computer, and launch the Plex app on your tablet. The Plex app should detect your server magically.
Step 6. For a test run, choose any movie/show and play it. You'll see a logo on top, it should find your chromecast connected to the projector. Select it, and it should work smoothly.
My opinion:
To make the thing pretty damn awesome, get a refurbished mac-mini and a remote and run Plex Home Theater on it. The interface looks like this. Easy for the girlfriend to navigate through.
And yes, Chromecast supports 1080p.
I think you set it up wrong. Go to http://plex.tv/web/app and tell me if you see anything. You should also have a program on your PC called Plex Web Server that you need to install from their website. Android App that you'll need to pay for if you want to cast it from your android device, in my case I also had to pay for the firestick tv app. What you don't need to pay for is plexpass which is "premium". Can you show me which link you've been going to for plex? I'd really like to help you figure it out, it really changed how I used the media on my PC and I'd like to pass on some help. Let me know where you are on that and we'll move on to the next steps.
Saw PlexFit and wondered why Plex got into fitness app development.
The beta for the client on the Shield. I run my server off my NAS.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android
Certainly agree on a lot of that. But some things are not my experience at all.
>Plex Upsides
>
>Easy install and configuration
I guess it depends exactly what you're doing and your OS. For both Plex and JF:
Then it's the same process for both open browser, go to server, point to media, run scan.
Plex wins hands down on slick marketing though. And JF certainly does still feel rough around the edges. In terms of finding instructions to install they were similar to follow for JF and Plex.

>And client apps that are available are mostly beta quality and often don't follow a consistent interface pattern
Personal preference, but I don't want consistent apps across platforms. I want the UI to match the system I'm using. Dropbox are good with this:
Android: https://www.dropbox.com/android
iPhone: https://www.dropbox.com/iphoneapp
In both cases it's instantly obvious that the app is Dropbox, but they follow the interface guidelines of the OS.
Plex on the other hand bulldozes it's on UI onto each platform:
Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android&hl=en_US&gl=US
Windows: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/p/plex/9nblggh3zzvf?activetab=pivot:overviewtab#
iPhone, iPad & Apple TV: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/plex-movies-tv-music-more/id383457673
I really dislike this approach.
Infuse for example is excellent, nothing beta about it, and it completely feels like an Apple TV app.

>Official Documentation is limited and sometimes out of date.

Plex server is free.
You don`t have to pay an subscription for the server.
You only have to pay for the mobile App if you want to use it.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android

Here you have the features listed if you want to use the Plex subscribtion:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/200288566-what-is-plex-pass/
The Dayton is a DAC and lossless WiFi streaming audio recevier. (It also has Bluetooth as a backup option). Your good phone does not stream audio to it, your phone just acts as a remote control. The digital audio signal goes directly from your WiFi router to the Dayton. The Dayton does the same thing a Raspberry pi streamer does. The Dayton is the music player wired to amp.

>What I'm trying to avoid is either wireless streaming, or having to have my phone/tablet/laptop stuck next to the amp. That's why was looking at the Raspberry Pi option, to have a music player wired permanently to the amp and NAS.
If your audio sources are files on a NAS then WiFi streaming is lossless so no reason not to stream over WiFi from the NAS to the Dayton which is DNLA NAS compatible. Then you can control the music from anywhere you and your phone are.
If you want to play audio from your old phone that is connected to your amp then use an audio player app that will play files from a NAS. A search finds Samba Network Music Player or Subsonic or possibly VLC or mabye Plex. I don't have experience with this so maybe some one else will chime in.
Have you tried Plex?

Install Plex on the Mi Box https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android

Have you tried setting up Plex?
Video file playback was added today's free v6.0 update in Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android
Maybe it isn't available for your device, but there is an app. Plex for Android
Check out Plex
I didn't even know it was on Amazon.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android
I'm confused, why are you getting down voted?
Is this not the Android app? I just installed it, and the TIDAL integration is there.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android
~~~The apps haven't always been free, but I can't find one that's not free now. I checked the Google Play Store and iTunes and the Blog says Apple TV App is free). According to https://plex.tv/xbox/ it's free for Xbox One and 360 and https://plex.tv/playstation/ it's free on the PS3 and PS4, but premium features and updates requires a PlexPass on Playstation.~~~
The PlexPass is a subscription that gives your Media Server premium features, and makes it available outside your local network, and that costs $39.99/year.
Edit: I misunderstood the Plex pricing model. The app is "free" but doesn't actually work unless you have a plexpass, or do an in-app purchase.
Never had any time restrictions? Then you've clearly paid them money somewhere along the line. My 'situation' is that I haven't given them money. I've got a Kindle Fire HD using the Plex App from the Amazon store. Streaming from my PC (which has the Plex server running).
When I open the app, I get this message
>Plex makes your media beautiful and lets you enjoy it wherever you are. To learn more and get started by setting up a Plex Media Server, visit http://plex.tv
>You can use this app to browse your Plex libraries and control your other Plex devices for free, and you can unlock the ability to play media on this device with a Plex Pass subscription -OR- for a one-time fee of $4.99.
>Learn more about the additional Plex Pass benefits, including exclusive features like Sync for offline viewing and free access to certain apps at http://plex.tv/plexpass.
(Copied verbatim, I added in bold where its in bold on the screen) At the bottom there's "Activate Now (4.99)" or a "Sign In" link.
When I sign in, and go to view a movie or something, it says this on the screen:
>Fling media to this app or use it to control other Plex apps for free (no time limits!).
>Until activated, playback from a Plex Media Server to this app will be limited to a minute and photos will be watermarked.
>Activate the full app in one of two ways: sign in with a Plex Pass enabled account (the app access if a subscription benefit) -OR- purchase the one-time in-app activation.
Skipping that (via 'NOT NOW') cuts off whatever audio or video file I play after 60 seconds. :\ Soo... yea. Plex pass sub, or I guess pay $5 for it but in either case it's not free. If you don't have any problem streaming on any platform, do you have the Pass subscription or did you pay $5 for each platform? ~~Or maybe they haven't updated the app on the amazon store in a long time since I do vaguely remember them changing something with the app and mobile streaming a while ago..~~ EDIT: They made the app free, but you apparently have to pay $5 to unlock the ability to stream for more than 60 seconds, or have a Plex Pass subscription.. previously, the app itself cost $5. So they did a switcheroo.
EDIT2: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android&hl=en
listed under 'free limitation'
>• LIMITATION: Playing media from your Plex Media Server on the device running this app is limited (one minute for music and video, watermark on photos) until the app is unlocked.
So it seems like it's not just Amazon's app store which gets screwed over. Gotta pay $5 to be able to stream to mobile!
Only on /r/funny would someone be downvoted for answering a question, never change you wacky kids you!
Plex for Android is a free app.
